The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a proper look at what Totoralillo has in store for us over the next couple of weeks.

Right off the bat, it’s a bit of a slow start. The surf is small and weak, and honestly, nothing worth paddling out for until we get past the first few days. The water’s sitting at 58.3°, which is a touch warmer than usual for this time of year – nothing crazy, but you’ll notice it’s a little more comfortable than the norm.

Saturday 22 August (afternoon) – Totoralillo is seeing a small 2.6ft SW swell with a short 8-second period and moderate combined energy (184). The wind is light and cross-shore from the NNW, so it’s not clean. The conditions are poor, so I’d give this one a miss.

Sunday 23 August – The morning brings a tiny 1.6ft WSW swell, but the wind goes glassy from the WSW. It’s surfable, but very ordinary. The afternoon sees a slight bump to 2.0ft from the SW, still glassy, but again, nothing to get excited about. Combined energy drops to 94.

Monday 24 August – Morning glass-off with a tiny 1.0ft SSW swell, period stretching out to 11 seconds. It’s barely a ripple. The afternoon gets a bit of a 1.3ft WSW swell with a 13-second period, but it’s onshore and messy.

Tuesday 25 August – Morning is cross-onshore and weak, with a 1.3ft SSW swell. The afternoon cleans up to glassy conditions with a 1.6ft WSW swell carrying a 15-second period and combined energy of 188. It’s still small, but the long period and glassy surface make it the most pleasant waist-high option so far.

Wednesday 26 August – Swell starts to build. Morning sees 2.6ft WSW swell with a 13-second period and combined energy of 246. The wind is onshore, but the swell is starting to look more interesting. The afternoon pushes to 3.6ft from the WSW, 12-second period, energy climbing to 369. Still onshore, so it’s a bit lumpy.

Thursday 27 August – Things get serious. The morning brings a solid 7.2ft WSW swell with a 13-second period and a massive jump in energy to 1672. Wind is light cross-onshore from the NW, so it’s not perfect, but the power is there. The afternoon is the standout: 8.2ft from the WSW, 16-second period, energy rocketing to 3740. The wind is onshore from the WSW, but the sheer size and long period make this a proper groundswell. This is expert territory – over 8ft, so only for those with serious skills. The long period will make it line up well at this point break, but it’s going to be a handful.

Friday 28 August – Still big. Morning has 7.5ft WSW swell, 14-second period, energy 2072. Wind is onshore from the WSW, so it’s messy. The afternoon drops slightly to 7.2ft, same direction, but the wind picks up to 9 mph onshore, making it rougher.

Saturday 29 August – Swell drops to 5.6ft from the WSW, 12-second period, energy 927. Morning wind is light onshore, but the afternoon gets a stronger 12 mph onshore from the SW, making it poor.

Sunday 30 August – Swell eases to 4.6ft, 11-second period, energy around 550. Morning is light onshore, but the afternoon again gets a 12 mph onshore breeze, making it a no-go.

Monday 31 August – 4.3ft WSW swell, 12-second period, but the wind is getting stronger. Morning is cross-onshore from the SSW at 9 mph, and the afternoon is a fresh 19 mph cross-onshore. That’s lumpy and choppy – not for paddling, but if you’
