The Lowdown

Right, let’s have a look at what’s on offer here at Totoralillo. This is a classic point break setup, exposed to the swell and very consistent, so it’s got plenty of potential. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so nothing unusual there.

The outlook kicks off on Friday, 17 July, but honestly, it’s a bit of a write-off. We’ve got cross-shore winds and a lumpy 8ft NW swell with a short, weak period, giving a combined energy of 1488. The conditions are messy, and the score is low. That’s a day to sit out.

Saturday, 18 July, is where things start to turn. The morning is still a bit cross-shore, but the afternoon sees a nice shift. By Saturday afternoon, the wind goes light and cross-offshore, the swell settles to 7ft from the WNW with a period of 10 seconds, and the energy drops to 882. It’s clean, and the wave comment says “expect very good surf conditions.” That’s a solid session.

Sunday, 19 July, is a mixed bag. The morning is a washout with heavy rain and a cross-shore wind, but the afternoon cleans up. The swell drops to 4ft from the west at 11 seconds, with a combined energy of 482. It’s clean again, but smaller.

Monday, 20 July, is a real standout. The morning is offshore with a light breeze, 3ft west swell at 11 seconds, and 529 energy. The afternoon is glassy. Absolutely glassy. 3ft, clean, and no wind. That’s a dream session for a point break, with long-period groundswell that will wrap in beautifully. This is the best on offer in the first week.

Tuesday, 21 July, the morning is small at 3ft, but the afternoon picks up to 6ft from the WNW at 10 seconds, with 704 energy and clean conditions. Another good afternoon.

Now, Wednesday, 22 July, is the big one. That’s the true standout of the entire 16-day window. The morning has an 8ft west swell at 12 seconds, with a massive 1975 combined energy, and clean cross-offshore winds. The afternoon is glassy with the same 8ft swell from the WSW, period of 12 seconds, and energy of 2221. These are excellent conditions for experienced surfers. The wave comment says “excellent surf conditions for experienced surfers” – and that’s no exaggeration. This is a solid, powerful groundswell with a long period, perfect for a point break. If you’re skilled, you’ll be on it.

From Thursday, 23 July, through to the end of the month, the quality drops off. The wind goes onshore or cross-onshore, the swell is a mix of sizes, but the scores are low. There’s a period from 24 July to 28 July where the conditions are poor, with little to get excited about.

Then, on Saturday, 26 July, the morning is worth a mention. It’s small, 2ft from the SW, but with a very long period of 18 seconds and clean conditions. That’s a long-period groundswell, and it will be peeling nicely down the point, though it’s only for the patient.

The last real hope is Saturday, 1 August. The morning is glassy, with a 6ft swell from the WSW at 12 seconds and 951 energy. The wave comment says “expect very good surf conditions.” That’s a clean, solid end to the run.

To sum it up: the clear standout is Wednesday, 22 July, for experienced surfers. The second best is the glassy afternoon on Monday, 20 July. The rest of the window is a mix of clean but small, or windy and messy. It’s a decent run for a consistent point break, but pick your days.

Rusty.
