The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s break down Punta Topocalma for the next couple weeks in feet and miles per hour.
We’ve got a solid window of surf, but the wind’s gonna play games. The first few days are a waste, then we get a proper banger.
Thursday morning (6th August) is a miss. There’s a 7ft SW swell but a cross-shore wind at 12 mph, and the report says it’s marginal. The wave energy is moderate (1365), but not worth the paddle. Thursday afternoon and all of Friday (7th August) are worse – smaller, lumpy, and cross-onshore. Stay home.
Then Saturday morning, 8th August, is the one. The swell hits 12ft from the SW with a 14-second period, and the combined energy is strong (4661). The wind is a light cross-offshore from the SSE at just 3 mph, so it’s clean. This is big, powerful groundswell – over 8ft, so it’s strictly for experienced surfers. The water temp is 57°, which is about average for this time of year. The break is a reef and point, so that long-period swell (14 seconds) will wrap in nicely. Expect crowds sometimes.
Saturday afternoon and Sunday (9th August) see the wind go cross-shore and cross-onshore, making it choppy and messy, even though the swell stays big (10ft to 12ft). The energy is still strong (3682 to 3978), but the quality is gone. Sunday afternoon is a total loss.
Monday (10th August) and Tuesday (11th August) drop in size (5ft to 8ft) but the wind is light and cross-shore, so it’s not terrible, just not great. Energy is moderate (526 to 1335).
Wednesday (12th August) through Friday (14th August) is a mix of small, weak swells (2ft to 5ft) with mostly cross or cross-onshore winds. Energy is low to moderate (463 to 924). The one bright spot is Thursday afternoon (13th August) – the wind goes light cross-offshore from the SSE, and the report says “expect very good surf conditions.” The swell is only 4ft from the WSW with a 15-second period, so it’s a clean, long-period groundswell on a reef setup. That’s a good session for intermediates.
The weekend (15th and 16th August) is mostly small and messy. Saturday morning is 3ft from the WSW with a light cross-onshore. Sunday morning (16th August) has a 3ft SW swell with a 15-second period, but the wind is cross-shore. Light rain, low energy (562).
Here’s the second standout. Monday, 17th August. Both morning and afternoon are glassy – zero wind, calm. The swell is 6ft and 6ft from the WSW with a 12-second and 11-second period. The energy is moderate (1469 and 1454). The report says “excellent surf conditions for experienced surfers” for the morning. Clean, glassy, and a solid 6ft on a reef and point. That’s a dream session. Tuesday (18th August) also looks clean with light cross-offshore winds, but the swell is a bit bigger (7ft to 7ft) and the morning has a 14-second period.
After that, Wednesday (19th August) through Friday (21st August) fades in size (5ft to 7ft) but the wind gets messy again. The morning of Friday, 21st August is glassy with a 6ft WSW swell, 11-second period, and the report says “expect very good surf conditions.” That’s a nice little finisher.
So, the best on offer: Saturday morning, 8th August – big, clean, powerful SW groundswell at 12ft, 14-second period, light offshore wind, for the experts only. And Monday, 17th August – glassy, clean, solid 6ft WSW swell, perfect for the experienced crew. The break is Punta Topocalma, a reef and point, exposed to the SW. Crowds are sometimes a factor, so get there early.
Rusty.
