The Lowdown

Alright, let’s check the forecast for the next couple of weeks. The main event is a solid, long-period SSW groundswell that’s gonna fire up that world-class left-hander, Kandui Left (Indonesia). This is a reef break, exposed to the swell, and it’s fairly consistent. The water temp is about normal for the time of year, so a 3/2mm or a spring suit is fine.

The best window is a ways out, but it’s worth the wait. The real standout is the morning of Thursday, July 30th, going into that whole weekend. We got a long period swell (17 seconds plus) building, with the combined wave energy climbing from 1366 to 1551 (moderate to strong energy). The wind is absolutely glassy – pure offshore from the east and northeast, and even dead calm in the afternoons. That means clean, peeling barrels. The swell is hitting 5ft to 5ft from the SW, which is a touch big for beginners but perfect for intermediate and advanced surfers. The long period means the sets will have plenty of punch and will line up beautifully on this reef. Crowds are *always* an issue here, so expect a packed lineup.

Before that, there’s a slow start. Monday morning, July 20th, sees a solid 6ft SSW swell with a very long 17-second period and combined energy of 2236 (strong). The wind is a light cross-offshore, so it’s clean. The report says it’s excellent for experienced surfers, and that’s because the swell is over 5ft and that long period means the sets will be big and powerful. But it goes downhill fast. By Monday afternoon a cross-on wind kicks up, and then Tuesday through the following week we get a messy mix of wind and smaller, shorter-period swell. The energy drops off into the hundreds, and conditions are mostly cross-shore and choppy. Not worth paddling out.

Then we hit a flat spell around the 27th and 28th of July. The swell drops to 2ft on the 27th, even with glassy conditions, it’s just too small. The 29th shows a little pulse, but the real action starts again on the morning of Thursday, July 30th. That’s where the forecast gets exciting. The combined energy hits 860 with a 3ft, 19-second groundswell and glassy conditions. Then it builds every day. The 31st of July morning is a 5ft SW swell, 17-second period, glassy, and the energy is 1366. That is a proper session. The pattern holds through to the 2nd of August, with 5ft to 6ft SSW swell, consistent 14-15 second periods, and glassy conditions all day. The 4th of August (Monday) morning looks clean with a 5ft SSW swell, cross-offshore wind, and energy of 884, but it’s not as good as the preceding days.

So, the bottom line: the first week is a write-off after Monday morning. The second week has a massive gap of poor to no surf until the 30th of July. But from the 30th of July through to the 2nd of August, we have a classic Kandui Left swell window with glassy conditions and solid, long-period groundswell. That’s your best bet.
