Alright folks, Rusty here, checkin' in with the long-range outlook for Kandui Left. Let’s get into it.
Look, the first week and a half is gonna be a bit of a grind. The swell is there, but it’s messy. We’ve got a big, long-period groundswell rolling in from the SW, but it’s fighting a moderate cross-onshore breeze from the SSE, so it’s gonna be choppy and a bit of a battle. The water is a warm 86°, which is about average for this time of year, so you’ll be comfy in a spring suit or just boardies.
Friday the 10th kicks it off with a 6ft SW swell (15-second period), but that 12 mph cross-onshore wind is gonna make it ugly. Wave energy is pumping hard at 1558, but it’s not doing us any favours. Saturday the 11th and Sunday the 12th drop off in size, with the swell sitting around 5ft to 3ft, and the wind stays rubbish. It’s a real “wait and see” situation.
The first real glimmer of hope shows up on Sunday morning, July 19th. The wind finally swings to a light ESE breeze, giving us a clean, glassy surface. The swell is a 3ft SSW groundswell with a very long 21-second period. That’s a classic reef-break pulse, and the wave energy is solid at 1020. This is the pick of the first two weeks, a real clean session for the experienced crew. The period is so long, it’ll be walling up nicely on the reef, but it might be a bit straight for some.
Then, on Monday the 20th, we get another standout. The wind is light and offshore again from the ESE, and the swell jumps to 7ft from the SSW (16-second period). The wave energy is a massive 2363. This is proper, powerful, and clean. The size over 5ft means it’s not for beginners, but for the crew who know their way around Kandui, this is gonna be firing. It’s a bit of a long-range hope, so don’t book the flight just yet, but it’s definitely the one to watch.
After that, the swell hangs around through the 21st and 22nd, but the wind gets a bit cross again, and the magic fades. The last few days of the window, from the 23rd to the 25th, the swell drops way off, under 4ft, and the period shortens. The wind does go glassy on the 25th, but the swell is weak.
So, for the absolute best of the bunch: Sunday morning, July 19th for the clean, long-period whisper, and Monday afternoon, July 20th for the bigger, more powerful, clean swell. If you’ve got the skills, that’s your window.
Rusty.
