The Lowdown
G’day, it’s Rusty here, and I’ve been staring at the charts for our stretch of coast, specifically Kandui Left, and I gotta be straight with you—this run is a mixed bag of frustration and promise. We’ve got a solid window of surf, but the conditions are going to test your patience, especially early on, before we get a few cleaner windows worth your time.
We’re kicking off on Wednesday the 19th of August with some size on the board—around 10 ft of SSW swell, and there’s a heap of energy behind it, clocking in at 5327 units. That’s some proper grunt. But the wind’s cross-onshore out of the south at 9 mph, and with a storm risk hanging about, it’s going to feel pretty messy and choppy out there. Water temp is sitting at 84.9°F, which is about normal for this time of year, no drama there. This is more of a “look, it’s big but it’s not clean” kind of day, so if you’re paddling out, you’re earning it.
Thursday the 20th drops a touch to 10 ft in the morning, but the wind shifts SE at 9 mph, cross-shore, and there’s still a bit of cross-chop. The energy’s still strong at 4135 units, but it’s a step down in quality. Afternoon sees it ease to 8 ft, same wind direction, still cross-shore, and it’s a bit more manageable but nothing to write home about.
Friday the 21st, the swell drops to 7 ft in the morning, but the wind bumps up to 12 mph SE and it’s cross-shore with a proper cross-chop. Afternoon, the wind swings more cross-onshore, and the quality goes south real quick—this is a skunk day, honestly. Energy’s still there at 2869 units, but the surface is going to be lumpy.
Saturday the 22nd is a bit of a reset—7.5 ft in the morning, SE wind at 9 mph, cross-shore, and it’s rideable but still has that slight cross-chop. It’s not terrible, but it’s not the day to cancel plans for. The afternoon cleans up a little with 7 ft, but the wind goes cross-onshore again, so don’t expect perfection.
Sunday the 23rd, we’re down to 6 ft in the morning, wind SE at 12 mph, cross-shore with a cross-chop. The period drops to 14 seconds, so it’s losing a bit of punch. Afternoon, the swell drops to 3.5 ft, but the period jumps to 19 seconds—longer gaps between sets, which can make it easier to paddle out, but the size is getting small.
Monday the 24th, morning’s 4 ft with a 16-second period, but by afternoon, the swell jumps back up to 7 ft with the same SSW direction. Problem is, the wind goes cross-onshore at 12 mph, and it’s choppy. The energy is back up to 2494 units, but a messy 7 ft is no fun.
Tuesday the 25th, we get a bit of relief—5.5 ft in the morning, wind drops to 6 mph SSE, cross-shore, and it’s light enough to have just small ripples. It’s not glassy, but it’s better. Afternoon, it’s 5 ft with a 14-second period, but the wind goes cross-onshore again, so the window closes.
Now, here’s where things start to look up. Wednesday the 26th is the first day that really catches my eye. Morning’s small
