The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty. Let's talk about what's on the menu for the Mentawai region, specifically at Kandui Left.
The first week is a bit of a mixed bag, but there are a couple of windows that'll get the heart pumping. The water's sitting at a warm 86°F, which is pretty much spot on for this time of year, so no surprises there.
We kick off Monday the 13th with a bit of a dud. That 3ft swell from the SSW is just not doing it, and with a cross-on breeze, it's a write-off. Don't bother. Tuesday the 14th sees a bit more size, around 5ft, but the wind is still messy, keeping things marginal. The real story starts Wednesday morning the 15th. The swell drops a touch to 4ft, but the wind switches to a light cross-offshore breeze from the ESE. That's clean. The period is a solid 15 seconds, which is proper groundswell, and it's hitting from the SSW. The energy is moderate (1110), but it's clean, and that's what counts. This is a good window for experienced surfers.
Thursday morning the 16th looks similar with 4ft SSW swell and clean conditions thanks to a light ESE breeze. The energy is a bit weaker (778), but still worth a paddle. The standout, however, is shaping up for Saturday afternoon the 18th. The swell is 4ft from the SW, but the wind goes glassy. Absolutely dead calm. That's a rare treat. The wave energy is moderate (639), but when it's glassy, you forgive the size. The consistency is fairly consistent here, so you'll get your share. Glassy again on Sunday morning the 19th with a 4ft SSW swell, but the period drops to 13 seconds, making it less punchy than the earlier windows.
The second week gets a bit more interesting. Monday the 20th sees a pulse of energy with 6ft SSW swell, and the energy jumps to 2266 – that's strong stuff. But the wind is cross-on, so expect some chop. It's a bit of a trade-off. Tuesday the 21st is cleaner with a cross-off breeze, but the swell drops to 5ft. The real highlight for the second week is Saturday the 25th. The swell is a clean 5ft from the SW, and the wind goes glassy on the afternoon. The energy is strong (1019), and the period is 15 seconds. This is a top-tier window. It's a long way out, so keep your fingers crossed, but if it holds, this is the one to circle. The 26th and 27th also offer glassy conditions with 4ft and 3ft swells, perfect for a longboard or a funboard if you just want to be out there.
For the standout, I'd have to pick Saturday afternoon the 25th for the best balance of size, clean glassy conditions, and that long-period groundswell from the SW. The crowds here are always an issue, so expect company, but when it's that good, it's worth sharing.
Rusty.
