The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it. The coming days at Kandui Left are looking solid with a strong, long-period SSW groundswell rolling in. This is a world-class reef break that handles big south-west energy well, and we’ve got a serious pulse of swell arriving right now. The water is sitting at about 85°, which is pretty much what you’d expect for this time of year – nothing unusual there.
Wednesday, August 19th kicks off with a solid 10-foot SSW swell, but the wind is onshore from the south and it’s a bit messy with a risk of thunderstorms. The wave energy is pumping hard – in the very strong range (5310) – so there’s plenty of power, but the conditions are far from clean. Later in the afternoon the wind swings more directly onshore, so keep your expectations tempered.
Thursday, August 20th is the standout window. The morning still has some risk of storms with a cross-shore wind, but by Thursday afternoon the wind goes light cross-offshore from the ESE and the surf cleans right up. Swell holds at about 8 feet from the SSW, period a nice 16 seconds, and conditions are described as clean. This is the best on offer early on – excellent for experienced surfers.
Friday the 21st through the weekend sees the swell slowly backing off and the wind becoming more cross-onshore or choppy. The wave energy stays moderate to strong (between 2000 and 3000), but the quality drops. Not the time to get excited.
Monday, August 25th and Tuesday morning offer a brief window of lighter winds and smaller 5-6 foot swell, but it’s not breaking clean enough to get the heart racing.
Then on Thursday, August 27th the swell pulses again. Thursday morning shows a 4-foot swell but with a very long 19-second period, and the energy jumps back up (1618). Wind is light and cross-shore. This is a groundswell with serious push for its size – Kandui Left being a reef setup will hold that long-period energy well, giving you some grinding lines. Not huge, but quality potential.
Friday, August 28th morning is another moment to watch. Swell about 6 feet from the SSW, period 15 seconds, and light cross-offshore wind from the ESE. Conditions are marked as clean. Another good window for experienced surfers.
The end of August fades into smaller surf, but lookout for Monday, August 31st: a new big SSW groundswell arrives. The morning shows 8-foot, 19-second period from the SW, and the energy is massive (5452). Wind is cross-shore from the SE, so it’s not glassy, but the power is undeniable. This is expert territory at that size, especially with that long period pushing through a reef. If you’re skilled and hungry, this is the big one to pencil in.
Crowds are always an issue at Kandui Left – it’s a world-famous wave and people know it. Don’t expect any solitude.
Through the first few days of September, the swell slowly winds down, with a final clean-ish morning on Thursday, September 3rd offering 5 feet, light cross-offshore wind, and clean conditions. A nice way to finish the run.
Overall, the standout on offer is Thursday afternoon, August 20th, with clean 8-foot waves, followed by the big-power session on Monday, August 31st for experts only.
