G'day, Rusty here. We’ve got one spot to talk about for the next couple of weeks, and it’s a beauty – Kandui Left. This reef break is ripe for experienced surfers, and the water’s sitting at a warm 86°F, which is pretty average for this time of year, so no surprises there. The overall pattern shows a solid run of quality waves kicking off this weekend, with a few choppy days in the middle, then cleaning up again for a strong finish.
The standout window starts Saturday afternoon, July 4th. We’ve got groundswell rolling in from the south at 3 feet with a very long 18-second period, which gives it heaps of energy (1088). The wind is a light cross-off from the ENE, 3 mph, keeping it clean. For experienced surfers, this is perfect – long, powerful lines with plenty of push.
Sunday morning, July 5th, is the real gem. The swell bumps up to 4 feet from the SSW, still a long 15-second period, and the wind goes glassy – absolutely dead calm. That’s about as good as it gets. Combined energy is 1161, moderate to strong. The afternoon gets a little bigger, 6 feet from the south, but there’s a risk of thunderstorms. Still glassy though, so it’ll be worth a paddle.
Monday morning the 6th holds clean, glassy conditions with 4 feet SSW swell, 13-second period. But Monday afternoon the wind swings onshore from the SW at 9 mph, and the quality drops off. From Tuesday the 7th through to Friday the 10th, we see onshore and cross-shore winds, choppy conditions, and swell heights hovering around 4 to 6 feet. The energy is still there (over 1000 at times), but the wind messes it up. Not worth the time unless you’re desperate.
Then it cleans up again. Saturday morning, July 11th, is still a bit cross-shore, but Sunday the 12th morning sees a light cross-off from the ESE at 6 mph, with 4 feet SSW swell, 13-second period, and clean faces. Good, but not epic.
The next big highlight is Tuesday, July 14th. That morning we get a 4 feet SSW swell with a very long 17-second period, clean cross-off wind, and 1257 of energy. By the afternoon it jumps to 6 feet with a 16-second period and 1620 energy – still clean. That’s a proper session for experienced surfers, with long, powerful bowls.
Wednesday, July 15th, keeps it glassy in the morning and afternoon, 5 feet SSW swell, 15-second period. Clean, beautiful conditions. Thursday the 16th afternoon turns dead calm – zero wind, glassy, 4 feet SSW swell. Magic.
From Friday the 17th into the weekend the swell drops, and the winds turn cross-shore again. By Sunday, July 19th, we’ve got a 4 feet SSW swell with a 19-second period (very long), but it’s cross-shore and a bit messy. The energy is 1299, so there’s grunt, but it’s not the cleanest setup.
Bottom line: the best on offer is Sunday morning, July 5th – glassy, 4 feet, long-period groundswell, and the break at its best. Tuesday the 14th afternoon is a close second, with bigger 6 feet swell and clean offshore winds. If you’re experienced, get out there. Crowds are always at Kandui Left, so expect company, but it’s worth it.
Rusty.
