Table - best surf conditions forecast for Honolii Beach Park over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s shaping up for the next couple of weeks.
To be straight with you, the outlook is pretty grim for a while. We’ve got Honolii Beach Park (Big Island) as the only spot in the game, and it’s a river mouth break that’s usually pretty consistent, but for the first week and a half, the conditions are just not playing ball. We’re looking at a solid 10-day stretch of poor surf, with onshore winds and rain showers making a mess of things. That’s a long gap to sit through.
The first real chance of anything decent doesn’t roll around until the morning of Monday, July 20th. Even then, it’s marginal. The swell is tiny—only about 3ft from the east, but the period is a massive 19 seconds. That’s a very long period groundswell. The energy is strong (796), but for a river break like this, that super-long period can make it break top-to-bottom and straight, not ideal. The wind is onshore at 9 mph, which is a bummer. The wave comment tells us it’s marginal, so keep your expectations low.
The standout, if you can call it that, would be the morning of Tuesday, July 21st. The swell is still only about 4ft from the east, but the period is still very long at 16 seconds. The energy is very strong (1070). The wind is onshore again at 9 mph, so it won’t be clean, but those long lines might offer something at the river mouth if the tide lines up. Given the crowds are “often” here, you might have some company, but on a Tuesday morning, you might get a window.
The water temp is sitting at 80°F, which is about 1°F warmer than average for this time of year. Nothing unusual, just a nice warm bath for the wait.
Honestly, for the first 10 days, the setup is so poor with onshore winds that it looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. The swell is there, but the quality is just not there for us.
Stay patient, keep an eye on the forecasts, and maybe spend the first week tuning up the car. The second week has a glimmer, but it’s a long way off and uncertain.
Rusty.
