The Lowdown
Hey, Rusty here. Let’s break it down.
First things first: the opening stretch is a total dud. From Tuesday July 14th all the way through the end of the week, we’ve got weak, short-period swell and onshore or cross-onshore breezes making a mess of things at Honolii Beach Park (Big Island). Swell heights are mostly around 2 to 3 feet, with periods under 8 seconds and low energy readings (between 60 and 190). Water temp is about 80°, pretty normal for this time of year. Nothing to get excited about.
Things start to look a little better on Saturday July 18th. We get a 5-foot east swell with an 8-second period and energy climbing to 322 (moderate). Still, the wind is cross-onshore, so it’s only just a looker. Sunday the 19th morning is similar with a 5-foot east swell, a light offshore breeze, but still only a marginal call.
The big news comes way out in the second week. On Sunday July 26th, we see a long-period groundswell from the east hit with a period of 16 seconds and energy at 770 (moderate to strong). Swell around 4 to 4 feet. The wind is light offshore that morning, so it should be glassy. This is the highlight of the entire 16-day window. Then Monday July 27th morning brings a 5-foot east swell, still 16-second period, and energy surging to 1007 (strong). Again, light offshore wind. This is the one to aim for. With that very long period, the waves will have plenty of push and shape, but can be a bit straight at beach breaks; Honolii’s river mouth setup might handle it well. Expect a crowd.
After that, Tuesday and Wednesday the 28th and 29th still have solid energy (400-549 range), but the wind gets more cross-on, so the quality fades.
To sum it up: the first week is a wash. Don’t bother. The last weekend of July, especially the 26th and 27th, is where the magic could happen. It’s a long way out, so keep an eye on the updates.
Rusty.
