The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's talk about Honolii Beach Park. The next couple of weeks look like a bit of a battle with the wind and conditions, and honest-to-goodness good surf is going to be hard to find.
We start off with a pretty bleak picture. Through most of this week and into the next, we've got onshore and cross-onshore winds ruining things. The swell is there, but it's short period energy (7-8 seconds) and the wind just chops it all up. The water temp is about average for this time of year. The combined energy is mostly weak to moderate (between 81 and 462), but it’s just not presenting well.
The first real flicker of hope comes on Monday, August 24th. Monday afternoon, we get a nice shift. The swell pushes up to 7ft from the E, with a 9-second period, and the real kicker is a clean, cross-offshore breeze from the S. The combined energy is moderate (670). This is the kind of setup that could actually offer a few fun ones, especially if you can find a bit of a bank. Beginners might find the 7ft swell a little much, but it's not dangerous.
There's a bit of a lull again after that with more choppy conditions until we hit the very end of the forecast. Now, listen here. On Monday, August 31st, the swell ticks up again to 6ft from the E with a 10-second period, and the energy jumps to a strong 748. But again, it's cross-onshore wind that'll mess with the surface.
Now, the standout, for my money, is actually the last day. On Thursday, September 3rd. It's a morning session. The swell drops back to 5ft from the ENE, but it's a longer period groundswell at 9 seconds. The combined energy is still moderate (480). But the magic is the wind: a clean, cross-offshore breeze from the S. This is the only "expect good surf conditions" call in the whole run, and for a river mouth like Honolii, that clean wind is everything. This is the one you want to circle on the calendar. It’s not a massive swell, but with that wind, it should be clean and rippable.
So, overall, it’s a tough couple of weeks with a lot of wind in the face. If you're desperate, the afternoon of the 24th might offer a few. But hold out for the morning of September 3rd. That's the one where it all comes together. The rest is mostly a kite-surfing show through the 30th of August when the swell gets over 5ft and more powerful.
