The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here again, lookin’ at the same stretch of coastline with a different ruler. Let’s get into it.
First week, from Saturday the 18th through Friday the 24th, it’s all pretty grim. The wind is blowing onshore or cross-onshore from the NE and ENE, and the swell is short and weak. The water temp is 80°F, right about average for the season.
Honolii Beach Park (river mouth) is the only spot we’re tracking. The swell is from the ENE, running 3 ft to 6 ft, but the period is short, mostly 7 to 8 seconds, so it’s all wind junk. The wind is blowing 9 to 15 mph, keeping the surface ugly. The wave energy is moderate, but the forecast is calling it “poor surf conditions.” Leave the board on the car.
Now, the good stuff kicks in on Sunday, the 26th of July. A long-period groundswell from the E with a 16-second period shows up, and the combined energy is a strong 1657. The swell is 6 ft, and the wind is a clean 9 mph from the NE – offshore. That’s the pick of the fortnight. The wind is light, the swell is big and long. Honolii is a river mouth, so a long-period swell can make it a bit wonky, but if the wind holds, it’ll be the best wave we get. Expect crowds. The Sunday afternoon and Monday the 27th keep that energy going with 6 ft to 7 ft swell and 14 to 15 second periods, still with offshore winds.
After that, it fades. From Tuesday the 28th to Friday the 31st, the swell drops to 3 ft to 5 ft, the period falls to 10-12 seconds, and the wind turns cross-onshore again. Only marginal surf.
The first two days of August are small, with 3 ft to 3 ft swell and a long period, but the cross-onshore wind and rain showers will keep it messy. Not worth it.
Bottom line: Sunday the 26th and Monday the 27th are your best bets. The rest is a waiting game.
Rusty.
