The Lowdown
Alright folks, it’s Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cooking for Honolii Beach Park. This is a river-mouth setup that’s very consistent, but we’re staring down a long stretch of pretty ordinary conditions before anything worth paddling out for shows up.
Right now and for the next week or so, it’s all a bit of a struggle. The surf is small, mostly around 2 ft to 3 ft, with a short, weak period of 7 seconds. The wind is a real problem – mostly onshore or cross-onshore, and the combined energy is weak, sitting between 49 and 129 (weak energy). There are a few moments where the wind drops, like Thursday afternoon when it turns glassy with a 3 ft, 7-second NNE swell, but the energy is still low. Honestly, the setup is more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing during this stretch. The crowds are often here, but that won’t matter much as the conditions are just poor.
We hit a dead zone from Sunday the 23rd through Monday the 24th with no swell at all, just flat lines and rain. That’s a tough couple of days. Then from Monday the 24th afternoon, things start to change, but not for the better at first – a 6 ft, 8-second E swell rolls in with a jump in energy to 499 (moderate energy), but the wind is cross-shore and the quality is still poor.
The real shift happens around the end of the month. Starting Saturday the 29th, we see a long-period groundswell arriving. The onshore wind is still there, but the swell is building. By Sunday the 30th, we’re looking at 6 ft to 7 ft swell from the ENE with a very long period of 13 seconds, and the energy is getting strong, hitting 1174 to 1336 (strong energy). This is expert territory over 8 ft, but for now, it’s a big, powerful, and clean-ish wave. The best of the entire 16-day window is shaping up for Monday the 31st of August and Tuesday the 1st of September. On Monday, we’ve got 8 ft to 8 ft ENE swell with 13 seconds, the wind is light and onshore from the NE, but the energy is massive at 1766 to 1857 (strong to very strong energy). This is heavy, powerful surf. Tuesday the 1st of September is the absolute standout: 8 ft ENE swell with 11 seconds, a light onshore breeze, and energy still very strong at 1527 to 1438. The water temperature is about average for the time of year.
Because this is a river-mouth spot, that long-period groundswell will really wrap in and focus, but it’s also going to be pushing a lot of water. It’s going to be for experienced surfers only. The crowd factor is “often” here, so expect a few heads out for these bigger days. After that, the swell backs off into the first week of September but remains rideable.
Standout call: The best is without a doubt Tuesday the 1st of September. That 8 ft, 11-second ENE swell with light onshore wind and enormous energy is the one to circle. It’s a big, powerful day for the crew that can handle it.
Rusty.
