The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty. Let’s talk about Honolii Beach Park.
Looking at the whole 16-day window, we’ve got a bit of a flat start, so don’t bother paddling out just yet. The first real hope arrives on the morning of September 1st, but that’s still nearly a week away. Before that, from now through the end of August, it’s a write-off. The swell is small or non-existent, and the winds are messy, with cross-off and onshore conditions making a mess of things. The water temp is sitting at 82°, which is about a degree and a half warmer than average for this time of year—nice and comfortable for a tropical paddle.
Honolii Beach Park is a river mouth setup, and it’s beginner-friendly and very consistent when there’s swell, but the first week is pretty much a bust. There’s a gap of about 8 days with no real surf on offer.
Then, on the morning of Tuesday, September 1st, things start to change. We’ve got a moderate cross-shore wind from the ESE at 12 mph, and the swell picks up to 7 ft from the ENE. The period is short at 9 seconds, and the combined energy is moderate at 671. This is the first time we see a score above zero, but it’s still marginal. The wind is a bit strong and cross-shore, so it’s not going to be clean. This setup might actually look more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing, given the decent wind and chop.
The best on offer looks like it’s going to be around the 5th and 6th of September. On the morning of Saturday, September 5th, we’ve got a solid 8 ft ENE swell with a very long period of 14 seconds. That’s groundswell, and it’s packing a lot of energy—2111 on the energy scale, which is strong. The wind is light and onshore from the NE at 9 mph. That’s not ideal, but the light wind means it’s not too blown out. The long period makes this better for a point or reef break, but at a river mouth like Honolii, the long period might cause the waves to break a bit straight. Still, this is the standout for size and power. It’s big enough that beginners should be careful—8 ft is getting into expert territory.
Sunday the 6th is similar, with 7 ft ENE swell, still long period, and lighter wind. The morning looks cleaner with a light offshore from the ENE at 6 mph. That could be the pick of the window if you want cleaner conditions with still decent size.
By Monday the 7th, the swell is up to 8 ft from the NE, and the period is still long at 12 seconds. The energy is very strong at 2141. The wind is light and onshore again, so it’s not glassy, but the size is there. The afternoon sees 10 ft, which is big—only for experienced surfers.
So, overall: the first week is dead, then we get a slow build into some serious groundswell in early September. The standout days are September 5th and 6th, with the 6th morning looking the cleanest. Keep an eye on that long period—it might make the river mouth a bit fat, but the energy will be there. Crowds are possible here, so don’t expect to have it to yourself.
Rusty.
