The Lowdown
Alright, let’s talk in feet and degrees for the crew that thinks that way.
The first week is a total dud. Honolii Beach Park is looking at small, weak, short-period slop from July 13th through the 17th. The energy is barely there, and the wind, while often offshore, isn’t helping make anything of the tiny waves. The water temp is about 80°F, which is normal for the season.
You’re looking at a solid gap of no good surf until the 18th of July. That Saturday morning sees a jump to 7ft swell from the east, with an 8-second period, energy at 952, but it’s still labeled "marginal" with a cross-onshore breeze. Not worth the hype. The 19th of July, Sunday afternoon, has a clean 6ft from the east with offshore wind, but again, it’s only a 1 out of 10 quality. It’s not good.
The real gold is at the end of the run. July 27th, Monday afternoon, you get a 6ft easterly swell with a 14-second period. That’s a long-period groundswell, and the energy is a solid 1405. The wind is light and offshore from the north-northeast, so it’ll be clean. For a river mouth, that long period can work well, keeping the lines organized. Then July 28th, Tuesday, the swell builds to 7ft in the morning, and 8ft by the afternoon, with energy over 2000. That’s big, powerful stuff. The period is 13 seconds, so it’s still a solid groundswell, but at that size, it’s for experts only. The wind is light and cross-onshore, so it won’t be perfect, but there will be waves.
So, don’t bother for the first week and a half. The window opens on the 27th of July. That Monday afternoon is your best bet for size and clean conditions. The 28th is for the brave and the skilled.
Rusty.
