The Lowdown
Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a hard look at what’s on the table for the next couple of weeks. I gotta be straight with you – it’s a rough start. The first few days are a write-off. We’re looking at a solid gap with no real surf until Monday the 24th of August. That’s a long stretch of flat or messy conditions to sit through.
The first hint of something happening rolls in on Monday the 24th. Honolii Beach Park (river) will see a pulse of swell, but it’s coming with a catch. That morning, we get a 7ft swell from the east, with a moderate cross-onshore wind at 12 mph. The combined energy is moderate at 771, but the wind is going to mess it up, making it choppy. That’s not a pretty picture. The afternoon cleans up a little with a lighter breeze, but the swell drops to 7ft and the quality is still just marginal. For the bigger waves, 7ft is getting up there, so it’s not for the groms.
Tuesday the 25th is a bit of a mixed bag. Swell drops to 6ft, still from the east, with a light cross-shore breeze. The energy is moderate at 418. It’s still just marginal, and the river mouth setup might not hold the shape perfectly with that period hanging around 8 seconds. This is more of a "maybe get a few" kind of day.
Through the rest of that week and into the next, we see a slow decline in swell size, but the wind stays mostly onshore or cross-onshore. The water temperature is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
The only real standout worth mentioning is a window that opens up on Saturday the 29th of August. The swell holds at 5ft from the east, but the period stretches to 10 seconds. That’s a longer-period groundswell, which means more energy and better-shaped waves. The combined energy spikes to 401. The wind goes almost glassy – a near-calm 3 mph from the northeast, which is offshore for this break. That’s a golden combo. Crowds are often around here, so get there early. It’s a consistent spot, so there will be waves for everyone, but the cleanup will be worth it. A 5ft swell with that period and glassy conditions is the pick of the entire forecast.
The following Sunday the 30th still has 5ft swell with a 10-second period, but the wind is back onshore, so it won’t be as clean. After that, it’s a slow fade back into smaller, less interesting surf through the first couple of days of September.
So, to sum it up: the first week is a wash. The only real light at the end of the tunnel is that Saturday the 29th. If you can wait, that’s your day.
Rusty.
