The Lowdown
Right, let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for Honolii Beach Park over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, it’s a bit of a tough start. The forecast starts with a real flat spell, and the first few days are pretty much a write-off. Friday 21st and Saturday 22nd August are looking poor, with tiny, weak swell and cross-onshore breezes that’ll mess up any chance of a clean wave. The combined wave energy is weak, only 55 and 73 respectively, so you’re not missing much.
Sunday 23rd is more of the same, with the swell all but gone. We’re looking at a gap of several days here with no real surf on offer. Monday 24th picks up a bit of energy, with swell around 5 feet to 5 feet from the east, but it’s still cross-onshore and choppy. The energy climbs to 297, which is moderate, but the wind kills it.
Tuesday 25th morning is the first time things get a little interesting. The swell holds at 5 feet from the east, period at 8 seconds, and the wind switches to light onshore, which is a step up. The score is a 1, so it’s still marginal. But by Tuesday afternoon, the wind goes light offshore from the ENE, and the swell is 5 feet. It’s not epic, but it’s the most promising window so far. The energy is moderate at 239. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so no worries there.
Wednesday 26th and Thursday 27th are a mixed bag. Wednesday has clean onshore wind but the swell is short period and a bit messy. Thursday 27th sees a long-period groundswell arrive, 16 seconds from the east, but the swell height is only 2 feet to 3 feet. The energy is moderate to strong, 344 to 456, but that long period and small size means it’ll be hard to catch at a river mouth break like Honolii. It’ll be more of a sightseeing day.
The real standout window is the end of the first week into the second. Saturday 30th August morning is looking like the best bet. The swell is 7 feet from the ENE, period 13 seconds, and the wind is light onshore from the NNE. The combined energy is strong at 1359. This is a proper swell, but at 7 feet it’s pushing into the territory where beginners will find it a challenge. It’s more for the experienced crew. The crowd factor is listed as “often”, so expect a few others out.
Sunday 31st August sees the swell building to 8 feet, and then Monday 1st September it jumps to 12 feet from the ENE and NE, with the wind going clean offshore from the south. That’s a big, powerful swell with very strong energy (3874 and 3425). However, at 12 feet, this is strictly for experts only. The long period of 12 to 13 seconds will make it powerful and lined up, but the size and the fact it’s a river mouth means it could be a bit of a washing machine. The wind is clean, so the surface will be good, but it’s going to be a serious session.
After that, the swell drops back through the 3 feet to 7 feet range, but the wind stays mixed. The last day in the forecast, Saturday 5th September, shows a drop-off to 3 feet and a long period of 15 seconds, but the energy is still moderate at 437. It’s a bit of a fade-out.
Overall, the best surf on offer is Saturday 30th August and Sunday 31st August, with that big ENE swell and clean conditions. The true standout is Monday 1st September, with an 12 foot swell and clean offshore wind, but it’s a big one. If you’re not an expert, aim for the 30th.
Stay safe out there.
