The Lowdown
Right, let’s have a look at what’s on the menu for Honolii Beach Park over the next couple of weeks. First off, I gotta be straight with you – the start of this run is a bit of a struggle. We’ve got a consistent river-mouth break here, but the wind is just not playing ball for a while. The water temp is sitting at 80°, which is pretty much bang on average for this time of year, so at least you won’t be needing a steamer.
The first few days are a write-off. Wednesday the 15th through Friday the 17th, we’ve got small, weak swell and a cross-on wind that’s just chopping it up. The combined energy is way down in the double digits and low triple digits (119 to 95), and period is a short 6 to 7 seconds. It’s just not worth paddling out for.
Saturday the 18th sees a bit more size push through, with a 5ft to 6ft swell from the east, and the energy jumps up to moderate (365 to 418). But the wind is still cross-on and choppy, so it’s not clean. Saturday afternoon gets a score of “marginal” at best. Sunday the 19th is similar, with 5ft and 4ft, but the wind is onshore or cross-on, making it a messy affair.
Then we hit a bit of a lull. Monday the 20th and Tuesday the 21st, the swell drops right off – down to 1ft to 2ft. The energy is all over the place, from very weak (63) to moderate (309), but the period gets long on the 20th afternoon, hitting 16 seconds. That’s a groundswell, but at that size, it’s barely a ripple, and the wind is still not helping.
Wednesday the 22nd through Friday the 24th, the swell stays small (2ft to 4ft) but the period is long again, 11 to 13 seconds. The energy is firming up into the moderate range (223 to 597). The wind is mostly on or light cross-on, which is a bit better, but the surf quality is still being called poor or marginal. Nothing to get excited about.
Now, the real standout comes at the end of the run. Saturday the 25th and Sunday the 26th, the swell from the east starts to build properly. Saturday morning brings 4ft of NE swell with a 15-second period, and the energy hits 755 – that’s strong. By Saturday afternoon, it’s 4ft at 15 seconds, energy 885. The wind is light and offshore from the NE. This is where it gets interesting. The swell direction is from the northeast, which is the optimum for this river break. With light offshore winds, those waves are going to be clean and lined up. The period is over 15 seconds, so it’s a proper long-period groundswell, perfect for a river mouth like this. It’s not huge, so it’s good for all levels. Crowds are likely here, as it’s a popular spot.
Sunday the 26th morning is the real gem. 5ft from the east, 15-second period, energy at a very strong 1340. The wind is light cross-on from the ENE, but it’s so light it’s still glassy. This is the best on offer. The waves will have plenty of energy and shape. The only thing to watch is that long-period swell can sometimes close out a beach break, but Honolii is a river mouth, so it should handle it well. After that, the energy drops off again through the 27th to the 30th, with the swell fading and winds turning more onshore or cross-on, making it messy again.
So, if you’re waiting for a good one, target the 25th of July afternoon through the 26th of July morning. That’s your window. The rest of the time, it’s either blown out or too small.
