The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, checking in on the Big Island.
Honolii Beach Park is a river mouth that’s perfect for learners, but for a while, it’s going to be pretty quiet. Water temp is about 27°, right where it should be for this time of year.
From now through July 24th, it’s a tough watch. Wind is blowing cross-onshore or onshore from the ENE and E most of the time, and the swell is small and weak. Friday morning the combined swell energy is just 66 (weak), and even when it picks up over the weekend, the waves are short-period and choppy. The biggest you’ll see is around 1.9m on Saturday, but with onshore wind and period under 8 seconds, it’s not worth getting wet for.
July 25th and 26th show more energy but still poor quality. Saturday the 25th morning has 1.9m from the ENE at 8 seconds, energy at 806 (moderate), but the wind is light onshore. That afternoon, a 1.2m, 16-second groundswell rolls in with energy over 1100 (very strong), but the wind cranks up to 20 km/h from the NNE, so it’ll be blown out. Could be fun for kite surfing, not for paddling.
Then from July 27th to 29th, we get proper groundswell — 12 to 16 second periods, heights from 1.7m to 2.4m, and energy readings over 3000 (very strong). That’s big, powerful surf, but with onshore and cross-onshore wind, it’s going to be challenging. At 2.4m, that’s expert-only, and the long period might make it close out at a river mouth. If you’re a strong paddler, you might find a wave, but it’s not user-friendly.
The one bright spot is Thursday July 30th morning. We’ve got 1.5m from the ENE at 11 seconds, energy 603 (strong), and the wind is glassy — dead calm. That’s the cleanest window in the whole two weeks. Mark it down, but it’s over a week away, so keep an eye on it.
After that, the 31st into August 1st, the swell drops to 1.1m and under, and the cross-onshore wind returns.
So, a long dry spell, then some solid but messy swell, and one glassy morning on July 30th that’s your best shot at Honolii. Beginners, sit this one out. For the rest, that Thursday is the call.
Rusty.
