The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it. Surf’s looking pretty quiet for Haumoana River Mouth over the next couple of weeks. This is a river bar setup, exposed to the swell, and it prefers it coming from the NE direction. Water temp is sitting at 55°F, which is a bit colder than usual for this time of year – that chill is definitely noticeable.
We’ve got a gap right at the start, with Tuesday (July 14) offering nothing but tiny, short-period stuff and poor conditions. Honestly, the first few days are a write-off. Wednesday the 15th stays tiny and ordinary. It’s not until Thursday morning the 16th that we start seeing something surfable, but it’s very ordinary – small 1ft ESE swell with a long 15-second period. The real hint of life shows up Thursday afternoon: combined swell energy picks up to 229 (moderate), with a clean 2ft, 17-second groundswell from the ESE. Light cross-offshore wind makes it clean, but don’t expect much power.
The standout window rolls in on Friday morning, July 17. That’s your pick of the whole forecast. We’ve got a clean 4ft swell from the ESE (16-second period) with light offshore WSW wind. Combined energy hits 561, which is solid, and with that offshore wind, it’ll be clean and lined up. That said, for a river bar and a beach, that long period can make things a bit straight – but early Friday, it’s worth the paddle. Crowds are possible here, so get in early.
Saturday the 18th still has some decent 4ft swell but the wind swings around onshore by the afternoon and energy drops a bit. Sunday the 19th drops off with a Southerly breeze and smaller waves. After that, we go into another quiet stretch right through the middle of the week, with only tiny, ordinary waves. There’s a brief glimmer on Thursday the 23rd morning – 3ft, short-period (7 secs) E swell with glassy conditions – but it’s small and weak.
Then things get weird. From Friday the 24th, the swell actually *pumps up*: 6ft on Friday, jumping to 7ft on Saturday the 25th morning, and peaking at a whopping 12ft on Saturday afternoon with combined energy over 5000 (very strong). But here’s the catch – it’s all accompanied by onshore winds (ENE) and poor conditions all the way through. For paddle surfing, that’s a mess. If you’re into kite surfing, that combo of strong swell and onshore winds would look way more interesting.
By Monday the 28th, the swell drops back under 3ft, and things get small and clean again, but nothing special. Overall, the one true standout is Friday morning, July 17 – that’s the session to aim for. The rest of the period is mostly small or blown out. For a spot that’s fairly consistent, this is a lean run, but forecasts can always shift.
Rusty.
