The Lowdown

G’day, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer for the next couple of weeks at Haumoana River Mouth (New Zealand).

Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – this is a tough stretch. The whole 16-day window is pretty much a write-off for any decent surf. The swell is tiny, barely registering, and the combined wave energy is weak as, sitting below 100 for the entire period. We’re looking at a long, frustrating gap with no real surf to get excited about.

Starting from Sunday the 23rd of August through to the end of the month, it’s flat. The swell is a pathetic 0.7 ft from the ESE with a period of 13 seconds – that’s a long period for such a small wave, meaning it’s just a groundswell ghost. Winds are messy, mostly cross or cross-off, and the water temperature is about average for this time of year. Not a single session worth paddling out for.

Moving into the first week of September, Monday the 31st of August through to the 6th of September, it’s more of the same. Swell heights drop to 0.3 ft, and the combined energy is in the single digits most days. There’s a brief moment on Wednesday the 3rd of September morning when the wind goes glassy – a rare treat for the eyes – but with only 0.3 ft of swell, it’s a lake, not a surf. By Saturday the 5th of September, we get a strong offshore wind (25 mph from the WSW), which would normally be a dream, but with 0.3 ft swell and combined energy of just 5, it’s more of a kite-surfing breeze than a paddle session. For an advanced river bar like this, you need a pulse of energy, and there’s none.

The outlook doesn’t improve much into the second week. The 7th of September Monday morning is clean with light winds, but still only 0.3 ft of SE swell and combined energy of 7. Honestly, if you’re hanging for a wave, you’re better off watching the forecast and hoping for a change. In this area, a blank run like this isn’t unusual – the swell windows can be stingy. But it never stays poor forever. Keep your eyes peeled, and when the numbers start to climb, you’ll know.

Rusty.
