The Lowdown
Alright, hey folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, it’s a pretty bleak stretch ahead. We’ve got a long, long run of poor conditions coming up, so right now, the best thing to do is save your energy. There’s no real stand-out swell on the horizon, and the wind is going to be a real headache for most of the period.
The first half of the run is dominated by tiny, weak swell. That combined energy reading is barely flickering, hanging around between 12 and 44 (weak energy) for nearly the first week. The water is a bit colder than usual for this time of year at 53°, so factor that in.
The first day that’s even worth a mention is early Thursday morning, the 20th of August, at Haumoana River Mouth (Haumoana-River-Mouth). We’ve got a clean 3 ft of swell from the ESE, and the wind is WSW and offshore – that’s a rare and welcome treat. It’s a tricky river bar only for advanced surfers, and it’s *fairly consistent*, though it’s an exposed spot. The period is a short 8 seconds though, so it’ll be a bit lumpy and weak. The combined energy is only 123 (moderate). It’s the best on offer, but it’s still just a *surfable* wave, not a classic.
After that, it’s a downhill slide. Friday morning the 21st is a tiny 2 ft with light cross-off wind, but it’s so small it’s barely worth a paddle. Then from Saturday the 22nd right through to the end of the month, we’re stuck with knee-high slop, mostly 0.7 ft to 1 ft, with periods that are all over the place. The wind is a constant problem – mostly cross-on or onshore – and the combined energy drops to single digits and teens (weak). It’s pretty grim, and there’s a solid gap of over a week with no real rideable surf.
Into the first week of September, the swell stays tiny, 1 ft to 2 ft, but the wind turns more consistently cross-off from the south. Combined energy kicks up a bit into the 30s, 50s, and a peak of 78 on the 3rd of September (still weak wave energy). The swell period is still short, around 7 to 10 seconds, so it’s not going to have any punch. It’s clean, but it’s just too small to get excited about. The direction is ENE, which isn’t ideal for the optimum NE swell that spot wants.
So, there you have it. A long, quiet, frustrating patch. The forecast can change, but for now, it’s not looking like a time to be chasing the river mouth. Keep the wax dry, and we’ll see what the next run brings.
Rusty.
