Alright, this is Rusty coming to you live from your screen. Let's get into it, my friends.

First up, the word on the street is that the river bar at Haumoana River Mouth is the only show in town for the next couple of weeks. The water's sitting at 55°F, which feels a bit colder than normal for this time of year, so you'll want that thick wetsuit.

The next few days are a bit of a letdown. We’ve got small, weak energy (334 on Saturday morning) and it just fades out. Saturday morning has the best chance early on with a clean 5ft swell from the ESE, but you'll be dodging side-offshore winds. By Sunday, it drops to under 3ft and the wind swings onshore. We are looking at a pretty flat run from Sunday the 12th right through to Wednesday the 15th, with very ordinary conditions and tiny, weak waves.

Things start to get interesting on Thursday the 16th afternoon. The period jumps to a long 14 seconds and combined energy hits 107, but it's still only 2ft. Not a standout, but the glassy conditions will make it look pretty.

The real standout, and the one I’m getting a little excited about, is Friday the 17th. Friday morning kicks off with a glassy 3ft wave with a very long 15-second period, but the energy starts to build. Then Friday afternoon... look out. We’ve got glassy conditions, a clean 3ft ESE groundswell, and combined energy jumping to 427. This is where it gets good. The river mouth is the spot for this kind of long-period swell, and with that offshore wind and glassy surface, it's going to be clean. This is the best on offer. Saturday the 18th morning holds good with a 4ft swell, but the wind shifts cross-off, still a solid option.

There's a big gap again from Sunday the 19th through to Wednesday the 22nd – mostly small, weak, and choppy. Not a good run.

Then we see a whole different beast rolling in. From Thursday the 23rd, a short-period ENE swell pumps in, hitting 6ft with very strong energy (511), but it comes with dirty cross-onshore winds that'll chop it up. It’s not looking good for a paddle. This setup with the strong wind and short period is way more interesting for a kite surfer than a regular surfer.

That swell sticks around into the 24th and 25th, building to a solid 8ft. The combined energy gets massive (1429 on Friday afternoon) but the onshore wind kills it. Saturday the 25th morning has the biggest wave height at 8ft, but it's onshore and messy with rain. That’s expert territory if you’re brave enough to deal with the wind. Sunday the 26th morning is the best of that last run with the swell easing to 7ft and the wind going cross-shore, but it's still a compromised, crumbly mess.

So, to wrap it up: get on it Friday the 17th and Saturday the 18th morning. That's your window for clean, lined-up groundswell at the river mouth. After that, you'll be battling the wind or looking at flat spells.

Rusty, signing off.
