The Lowdown
Well, folks, it’s Rusty here, and I gotta be straight with you. The next couple of weeks are looking pretty bleak for a proper paddle. We’ve got a long stretch of small, weak surf and messy winds ahead, so if you’re jonesing for a wave, you might want to find another hobby for a while.
The water’s a bit colder than usual for this time of year, so you’ll want the thick suit on if you do venture out. We’re talking about 53° water, which is a good 3° below average, so it’s going to feel crisp.
Right now, and for the next several days, we’re looking at a whole lot of nothing. The swell energy is weak, with readings mostly in the low hundreds – that’s not going to get anyone excited. The surf at Haumoana River Mouth is tiny and the wind is all over the place, mostly cross-off which isn't doing us any favors. Early on, we see some 3ft to 5ft swell, but it’s short period, around 8-10 seconds, and the conditions are just poor. There might be a small window on Thursday morning the 20th when the wind goes light offshore and the surf is a clean but tiny 3ft. It’s surfable, but you’ll be bouncing on a longboard, not ripping.
After that, it just fades away. From the 22nd through to the end of the month, we’re looking at dribble. Swell heights drop to 0.3ft, 0.7ft, maybe 1ft if we’re lucky. The combined energy numbers are in the single digits and teens – that’s about as weak as it gets. The good news is there are a few windows of clean, glassy conditions, like the morning of the 27th, and a couple of mornings with light offshore breezes. But clean, tiny onshore slop is still slop. It’s just not worth the effort.
The wave period does stretch out to 13-14 seconds for a bit, but with that little swell behind it, it doesn't mean a thing. We do see a jump in the longer period on the 23rd, but again, the actual wave height is a paltry 0.7ft.
We’re looking at a real dry spell here. It’s not a normal spike of bad luck; this is a pattern of just no swell generation at all. The whole first week of this outlook is basically a write-off.
Now, looking further out into the second week, there’s a tiny glimmer. On the 30th, we see a tiny 1ft bump with a clean cross-off wind, and then again on the 1st of September, a slight increase to 2ft with a glassy morning. These are not waves that will get your heart pumping, but for a desperate soul on a longboard, it’s something. The period is short, though, around 7-8 seconds, so it doesn't have much push.
Honestly, the most interesting thing on offer is the morning of September 2nd, where the wind is light offshore and clean, but the swell is an absolute zero at 0.3ft. That’s not surfing.
So, plain and simple: there is nothing good on offer in this 16-day stretch. It’s a blank run, and for this area, it’s just one of those times. You’re better off doing something else for a while. Forecasts can change, so I’ll keep an eye on things, but as it stands, leave the boards in the car.
Rusty, out.
