Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s talk surf for the next couple of weeks at Haumoana River Mouth. It’s a bit of a mixed bag, but there’s definitely a window to get excited about.
The overall pattern kicks off slow, but we’ve got a solid pulse of easterly groundswell building into the middle of the week. The early action on Monday 6th July is pretty weak and underwhelming – you’ll find waist-high, 3ft swell with a period of 9 seconds, and combined swell energy is just 104. Conditions are glassy though, so if you’re desperate to get wet, it’s doable, but it’s not gonna get the heart pumping.
The real story starts Tuesday morning, 7th July. We’ve got clean 4ft easterly swell (249 combined energy) and a light offshore wind from the WSW. That’s a nice change. The waves will have some shape, and the river mouth setup should offer some punchy little peaks. Tuesday afternoon stays clean with a cross-offshore breeze.
Now, Wednesday 8th July is where you want to be. That’s our standout. Morning brings a 5ft easterly groundswell, period of 11 seconds, and clean offshore wind from the west. Combined energy jumps to 516 – that’s proper moderate energy. The waves will have some push and the offshore breeze will keep ‘em lined up. It’s an advanced wave for sure, and with a period that long, expect some lulls between sets, but the wait will be worth it. This spot can get a bit of a crowd, but with a solid 5ft, the better surfers will be the ones out. Wednesday afternoon stays good but gets a bit more cross-off.
The wheels fall off a bit on Thursday 9th July, with strong southerly winds and messy conditions – that rain and 22 mph wind turns it into a washout. Friday through to Sunday, 10th to 12th July, drops back into marginal territory. Swell sticks around 5ft to 6ft from the SE, but cross-offshore winds and a drop in quality means it’s not really worth the paddle.
Monday 13th July you might catch a decent enough morning with a 4ft easterly swell and light offshore wind (214 combined energy), but it’s pretty small and inconsistent for the rest of deep runs from there. After that, a 3 to 4 day dry spell hits mid-week – no good options from the 14th through the 16th as onshore winds and choppy conditions take over. By Friday 17th and into the weekend, we’re looking at small, messy surf with onshore junk. That brings a several-day gap with no real recommendations.
A flicker of life shows by Monday morning 20th July, with glassy conditions and a small 2ft long period pulse (12 seconds, 102 energy), but you’d be on a foamie to have fun. Tuesday 21st July also has glassy, small conditions, but nothing to write home about.
So to sum it up: Wednesday 8th July is your best shot – solid 5ft easterly groundswell, clean offshore breeze, plenty of energy. The rest is mostly for the dedicated or the patient.
