The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a proper look at what’s headed our way for the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, this is a tough stretch for Napier – Hardings Road. That first record we’ve got shows a tiny 0.3ft wrap from the NE on Thursday 16th July, with combined wave energy at just 4 – that’s pretty weak. The water is running a bit colder than usual for this time of year at 55°F. But honestly, that small bump is still tagged as poor surf conditions, so it’s not going to be worth paddling out.
What follows is a long, dry spell that runs all the way through to the end of Saturday 25th July. There are plenty of glassy mornings and clean, cross-off afternoons in there, but there’s literally no swell registering on the chart for most of that time. Frustrating, I know. It’s just flat, clean, and empty.
Now, Saturday 25th July finally brings us the most hopeful window in the whole outlook. After the weekend, the morning shows a modest 3ft swell from the ENE with a short period of 5 seconds, pushed by a moderate cross-shore breeze from the NW. The combined energy is still only 47 – moderate at best. Not a standout by any means. The better bet that same day is the afternoon session. The wind swings offshore from the SW at 6 mph, cleaning things right up, and there’s a 2ft ENE swell with a slightly better 7-second period. The energy reads at 58, still moderate, but that offshore wind will be the key – it’ll make for clean, small waves on the point.
There’s nothing else in the entire 16-day run that even comes close to that Saturday 25th afternoon as the best on offer. The rest of the second week is a mix of even smaller, wind-chopped, and sloppy lumps. Sunday 26th July drops right back to a 0.3ft NE swell. Tuesday 30th July morning has a 2ft windswell from the N with a 4-second period – short and weak, with a cross-shore chop. By the time we hit Friday 31st July, there’s a 0.7ft NNW windswell and then a 1ft NNW swell in the afternoon, again with a short, weak period.
Honestly, if the swell on Saturday 25th afternoon firms up a little, that’s your session. For a sheltered point break like this, a clean 2ft with offshore wind is as good as it gets in this stretch. The rest of the time, you’re better off waiting for a better forecast.
