The Lowdown

Alright, let's get real about this stretch. First things first, this is a rough one, my friends. We are looking at a long, flat run for Antibes - Fort Carre (France). This reef break is inconsistent at the best of times, and the next 16 days are shaping up to be a proper bust. The water is sitting at a very unusual 81°F - that's far warmer than normal for the time of year, which feels a bit off, but with no waves, you'll just be having a warm bath.

The first sniff of anything rideable comes on Wednesday the 9th of September, but it's a sad little affair. You're looking at a weak, short-period 1ft swell from the SSW, with a combined energy of just 6 – that's nothing. The wind is cross-shore in the morning and cross-off in the afternoon, but even that clean afternoon wind can't polish a turd. This is beginner-level dribble at best.

Then we hit a dead zone. From Thursday the 10th right through to Tuesday the 15th of September, it's pretty much flat. You get the odd 0.3ft or 0.7ft bump, but the energy readings are in the single digits or zero. Forget it. The 18th and 19th of September show a tiny uptick, with a 2ft easterly swell on the Friday and Saturday mornings, but the period is a poor 4 seconds. The combined energy creeps up to a modest 14-18, which is still weak. The glassy mornings on the 18th and 19th are the best conditions you'll see, but with that short period and tiny size, it's barely breaking. This setup looks far more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer.

The only "standout" if you can call it that, is Saturday morning the 19th of September. It's a glassy start, with a 2ft swell from the ENE, period 4 seconds, and a combined energy of 18. It's small, weak, and inconsistent, but it's the cleanest wave of the whole run. For an expert, it's a total non-event. For a beginner with a foamie, it might just be enough to get wet.

Overall, this is a tough outlook. A 16-day blank run is more normal for this area than a surprise swell. Keep your eyes on the forecasts, because it tends not to stay this poor forever, but don't hold your breath.

Rusty.
