The Lowdown

G’day, Rusty here. I’ve been over the charts for Antibes - Fort Carre, and I hate to say it, but this is one of those outlooks where you’re better off leaving the board in the car. This reef needs a specific easterly swell to fire, and over the next 16 days, the direction and size just aren’t lining up at all. It’s a long, flat, and frustrating run.

The water temp is a balmy 81°F, which is a massive 8°F warmer than average for this time of year. Pretty unusual, feels like a heated pool, but it won’t help the wave count.

Looking at the start, on Sunday the 30th of August, we’ve got a pathetic 1ft southwest swell with a short period of 5 seconds and weak energy (8). The wind is light offshore and the conditions are clean, but the wave comment is spot on: “poor surf conditions.” That theme carries on through the first week. We get a glassy morning on Tuesday the 1st of September, but it’s only 1.0ft with a 4-second period – that’s barely a ripple.

There’s a dead patch from Wednesday the 2nd all the way through to Friday the 4th of September with absolutely zero swell.

We see a tiny lift on Saturday the 5th of September, with the swell hitting 1ft in clean morning conditions and 1ft again in the afternoon (14 energy). But it’s coming from the southeast, which is the wrong direction. Into the second week, the best we can manage is Sunday the 6th of September afternoon with a 2ft easterly swell (24 energy), but it’s straight onshore. There is a brief moment on Monday the 7th of September morning with 2ft easterly swell and dead flat glass (15 energy), but it’s still not enough to get excited about.

The biggest bump we get is on Saturday the 12th of September afternoon, with 3ft of southeast swell and moderate energy (50). That’s the most size in the whole 16-day window, but the wind is cross-onshore and the period is a weak 5 seconds. Not a quality wave at all. The rest of the run is more gaps and tiny dribbles. This break is inconsistent at the best of times, so a long flat spell like this isn’t that unusual for the area. Forecasts can change, but right now, it’s looking like a real dud.

Stay safe, Rusty.
