Ensenada Beaches Surf Forecast and Surf Report

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s shaping up for us over the next couple of weeks.

Honestly, the outlook is a bit of a mixed bag. We’ve got a persistent cross-onshore wind that’s making things choppy and messy for a lot of the period. The water is feeling much warmer than normal for this time of year, coming in at a balmy 71°.

We start off on Tuesday, July 21st with a 4 ft swell from the SW, but that cross-onshore breeze from the WNW at 9 mph is going to keep the surface fairly choppy. It’s pretty marginal, and the afternoon session is a write-off. Wednesday, July 22nd sees the wind pick up to 16 mph, making it even worse. That stretch of poor surf lasts through to Thursday, July 23rd morning, although the afternoon might offer a tiny glimmer of hope with the wind dropping to 6 mph.

Friday, July 24th is where things get interesting. The swell drops to 2 ft, but the period jumps way up to 24 seconds. That’s a very long period groundswell, and the combined energy reading is a solid 1413 – that’s a lot of power for a small wave. The wind is light cross-onshore, but with that long period, the waves will be clean and lined up. This is a standout for the forecast period, but it’s a wave for the more experienced. With that 24-second period, these waves will be very straight at the beach breaks (Ensenada Beaches), so look for a softer spot or a point if you can. Keep in mind this spot is fairly consistent but crowds are possible.

Saturday, July 25th and Sunday, July 26th continue with light winds and a dropping swell period. The winds actually shift to straight onshore on Sunday, which is a big plus. From Monday, July 27th through to Wednesday, July 29th, we get a run of smooth, glassy conditions. Winds are light and onshore, but the swell is consistently around 4 ft to 5 ft from the SW. The combined energy sits between 844 and 1396, so there’s plenty of water moving around. The waves won’t be perfect, but with no wind to mess them up, they’ll be rideable and clean. This is the most consistent run of the period.

Then we hit a bit of a flat spot. Thursday, July 30th and Friday, July 31st are poor, with the swell dropping to 2 ft on the 31st and the energy reading falling to just 43. That’s weak.

Saturday, August 1st brings a bit of a spike, with a 7 ft SSW swell. That’s starting to get a bit big for beginners, and the cross-onshore wind will make it a bit of a bumpy beast. That’s one for the experts or those wanting a challenge. The rest of the first week of August looks like small, weak, and poor surf.

So, the best two options on the table: Friday, July 24th morning for the super long period, clean lines, and that 4 ft swell (despite the cross-onshore breeze). And the run from Monday, July 27th to Wednesday, July 29th for the most consistent, clean, glassy surf with a solid 4 ft shoulder-high swell.
