The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on offer for Bunbury Sidies.

The pattern is pretty straightforward: we’ve got a massive pulse of energy coming in, but it’s all wrong for the first week—too big, and the wind is in the wrong direction. The real hope is for a clean-up later in the second week, when the wind drops and the swell settles.

This first bit is a write-off. From the 7th through to the 13th of August, it’s a mess. The swell is just too big and the wind is onshore or cross-shore, making it a complete no-go for a paddle. The combined swell energy is huge, hitting 9401 (very strong) on the 11th with a 13ft swell and a 17-second period, but it’s crossed up and blown out. A beginner spot like this is going to be a washing machine. For the whole stretch from the 7th to the 13th, the water is running a bit colder than average for this time of year at 61°F.

Now, the 14th of August is where it gets interesting. A window opens on Friday morning. The wind swings to a light NE at 5 mph, giving us a clean cross-off at Bunbury Sidies. The swell drops to 7ft from the WSW, with a solid 16-second period. The combined energy is still a healthy 1938 (moderate to strong). This is the standout for the whole outlook. The conditions are clean, the swell has power, and the direction is right. It’s an excellent option for experienced surfers. Crowds are sometimes a thing here, but on a Friday morning with this forecast, you might get a little peace.

Saturday the 15th also has a moment of glory. The afternoon session is glassy, with the wind going dead calm. The swell is 6ft from the W at 14 seconds. That’s clean, punchy, and fun. It’s another excellent option, but the morning is a bit more cross-shore, so aim for the afternoon.

Sunday the 16th is a glassy beauty all day. The swell is 8ft from the W, with a 13-14 second period. The combined energy is 2031-2382 (moderate to strong). The wind is virtually nothing from the ENE and WSW. This is top-tier, clean surf for the experienced crew. The 8ft is a bit much for beginners, but for everyone else, it’s a dream.

After that, the 17th brings a 10ft swell from the W with a 17-second period, but the wind turns onshore and the quality drops. By the 18th, it’s blown out with strong winds, and the 19th onward is a mix of onshore winds and messy conditions. There’s a potential window on the 22nd with a 10ft swell, but the wind is cross-on and the period is a short 10 seconds, making it a chop-fest. That one’s for the kites, not the paddle.

So, the best on offer is the Friday morning the 14th, with the Saturday 15th afternoon and Sunday 16th as close runners-up. Everything else in the 16-day window is a miss.

Rusty.
