The Lowdown
Alright, mate, Rusty here. Let’s have a proper look at what Bulli Beach has got cooking for us over the next couple of weeks. Honestly, it’s a pretty lean run to start with, so don’t be in a rush.
First up, the water temp is sitting at about 64°, which is roughly 1° warmer than average for this time of year – nothing wild, just your typical late-winter feel.
We kick things off with a bit of a flat spell. From Sunday the 23rd right through to Monday the 31st of August, it’s mostly tiny dribble and ordinary conditions. The swell stays under 2 ft all week, and most of the time the wind is either cross or onshore, so you’re looking at little mushy waves if anything at all. Tuesday the 25th morning pops up with 4 ft from the NE and a light cross-off breeze, but combined energy is still low at (132), and the period is a short 6 seconds – just lumpy, weak stuff. Not worth paddling out for. There’s a glassy morning on Thursday the 27th with 2 ft (60) but again, it’s gutless. Honestly, it’s a tough run for any real surfing.
Then we ease into September. Tuesday the 1st has a tiny 2 ft swell from the E with a 10-second period and clean offshore NW wind in the morning, and a glassy arvo – but the energy is only (66). It’s clean but tiny, maybe a longboard session if you’re desperate. Wednesday the 2nd morning is similar: 2 ft, 10 seconds, glassy SSW breeze, energy nudging up to (80), and the data calls it “surfable but ordinary” – I’d call it a hopeful ankle-snapper.
Looking further out, Sunday the 6th of September morning finally shows a bit of promise. We get 3 ft from the NE with a moderate offshore NW wind at 12 mph, period is 7 seconds, and the combined energy jumps to (119). It’s not huge, but with clean conditions and that offshore breeze, Bulli could offer some fun little peaks for the crew who want to get wet. The afternoon holds 3 ft from the NE with a 10-second period and a gentler cross-off, energy at (125) – this is the best of the outlook. Clean lines, workable size for the regular surfer on the dawn patrol arvo. Monday the 7th morning has a similar 3 ft NE swell, offshore NW wind again (12 mph), energy at (93), but you’re getting a bit lumpier, less consistent.
Overall, Bulli’s not in top form for the next 16 days. There’s a proper drought through the first 9 days. The only standout is the Sunday 6th September session with that offshore wind and clean NE swell. It won’t blow you away, but if you’re keen and patient, that’s your window. Everything else is pretty forgettable.
Stay patient, and keep an eye on the charts – it tends not to stay flat forever around here.
