The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here, and I’m not gonna sugarcoat it—this is a rough run for Bulli Beach. We’ve got a long stretch ahead with barely a whisper of decent surf. The first real chance doesn’t fire until Thursday the 27th, so you’re looking at a solid ten-day gap of flat to junk conditions. But let’s take it day by day.
The window kicks off Monday the 17th with nothing to write home about—rain showers and onshore wind smashing a weak 3 ft SE swell. The combined energy is a measly 90, so don’t bother paddling out. Tuesday the 18th offers a glimmer early: glassy conditions with a tiny 3 ft ESE swell, but it’s ordinary and the energy’s still weak (83). That afternoon drops off fast. From there, it’s a wasteland of small, messy, or blown-out surf right through to Wednesday the 26th. Winds swing all over, but the swell stays below 3 ft and the energy rarely cracks 100. The water temp sits at 64°, about 1° warmer than usual—nothing wild, just a touch mild.
Now, Thursday the 27th morning is the standout. Expect a clean, glassy session with a 7 ft NNE swell pushing in—this one’s a groundswell with decent period, so it’ll have some punch in the sets. The combined energy jumps to 657, which is moderate, not chaotic. The wind is offshore from the SW, meaning clean faces and proper lines. That said, this is a beach and reef setup, so at 7 ft it’s pushing into expert territory—too much for beginners. The long period (7 seconds) is fine for a beach break, but don’t expect it to hold shape perfectly. Crowds are possible here, and given it’s the only game in town, you can bet a few locals will be out.
After that, Friday the 28th morning hangs onto some 4 ft NE swell with offshore wind and a cleaner look, but it’s ordinary surf—energy drops to 191, and the quality fades fast. The rest of the run into September is flat or junk.
So, if you’ve got the skills, that Thursday the 27th morning is your one shot. Everything else, leave the board in the garage.
Rusty.
