The Lowdown
G'day, Rusty here. Look, I've scanned the charts for Bulli Beach and I gotta be straight with you – the next 16 days are a real mixed bag, and the good stuff is a long way off. We're looking at a flat spell to start, then a couple of windows that might get your hopes up, but you'll need to be patient.
The first week is pretty much a write-off. From Friday the 17th right through to the end of the week, we're dealing with weak, short-period windswell and nowhere near enough energy to get excited. The wind is cross-onshore, the surf is poor – it's just not worth paddling out for. The combined energy is barely reaching 108 on the Friday morning, and it's all downhill from there. You'd be better off cleaning the wax off your board than trying to get a wave.
Finally, there's a glimmer of hope on Sunday the 19th. The swell picks up to 6.2 ft, but it's a bit of a messy one. The period is 11 seconds, so there's some groundswell in there, but the wind is cross-onshore in the morning, and the combined energy jumps to 849 – that's a solid pulse of energy. It's a beach and reef setup, so with a long period like that, it might be a bit too straight and require a bit of patience. The morning is marginal, but the afternoon clears up with onshore wind and a 2/10 rating. It's not a standout, but it's the first sign of life.
Now, here's where it gets interesting. The real standout of the whole run is Monday the 20th. The morning session is the pick. We've got a clean 5.2 ft swell from the ENE, with a 10-second period, and the wind is a light offshore from the NNW. The combined energy is a solid 532, and the forecast is for very good surf. This is the one to circle on your calendar. The water temp is about 64.6°, which is pretty normal for this time of year, so the wetsuit will be fine. The break is Bulli Beach, and it's fairly consistent, but it can get crowded sometimes, so get there early.
Tuesday the 21st morning is also a cracker. The wind drops to glassy, dead calm, and the swell hangs in at 4.6 ft with a 10-second period and 402 combined energy. It'll be clean and smooth, perfect for a longer session. After that, the window starts to close. Wednesday and Thursday drop off fast, and from Friday the 24th onwards, it's back to flat, small dribble. The combined energy plummets to under 100, and the swell is all but gone.
Beyond that, the second week is a total dud. From the 25th of July through to the 1st of August, the swell is tiny, under 1.6 ft, and the energy is negligible. There's a weird little spike of long-period energy on the 31st of July and 1st of August, but it's a 0.3 ft swell with a 19-20 second period – that's just a ghost. It's not going to do anything. So, the whole run is a one-trick pony: Monday the 20th morning is your best and only true shot at something special. Don't sleep on it.
