The Lowdown
G’day, I’m Rusty. Well, I’ve had a good look at what’s on the table over the next couple of weeks, and I’m not gonna sugar-coat it – it’s a pretty quiet stretch for Bulli Beach. We’ve got a whole lot of days where the surf just isn’t offering much, with the first real sniff of something happening after a long, flat start. The water’s sitting at about 64°, which is a touch warmer than average for this time of year – not a huge deal, but nice if you’re in a spring suit.
Let’s get into it. Right from the get-go, Saturday the 22nd of August is a write-off. Tiny 1ft NE windswell with a short 6-second period, and the wind’s all wrong. Sunday the 23rd has a glassy start, but still just that weak 1ft NE bump – pretty frustrating. Monday the 24th sees a slight lift to 4ft NE swell in the afternoon, but it’s messy with a strong cross-off wind.
Now, we start to see the first little pulse around Tuesday the 25th. The early morning has a 4ft NE swell, period still short at 6 seconds, but the combined energy is moderate at 176. It’s surfable but ordinary, and the light rain doesn’t help the vibe. The wind is cross-off from the north, so it’s clean enough for a paddle if you’re keen, but don’t expect much shape.
Wednesday the 26th bumps up a touch – 4ft NE swell, 8-second period, and energy climbs to 242. But the wind swings cross-on from the SSW, making it choppy. Not worth rushing for.
Thursday the 27th drops back to 3ft NE swell. The wind is still cross-on, and it’s just dull. Friday the 28th morning offers a brief window with a light WNW cross-off wind and the same 3ft ENE swell (123 energy), giving a clean surface. It’s nothing special, but it’s the most surfable we’ve seen all week.
Saturday the 29th morning has a similar 3ft ENE swell with glassy cross-off wind, so another clean but small option. After that, it fades into tiny surf with poor conditions right through the start of September.
Looking further out, there’s a bit of a tease on Wednesday the 2nd of September. A 4ft S swell arrives in the afternoon, but with a shocker 4-second period and onshore wind – so that’s a no-go. The following morning, Thursday the 3rd of September, has a promising offshore wind from the NNW at 12 mph with a clean surface, but the swell is only 1ft ENE with an 11-second period. That long period groundswell would be better suited to a point break or reef, and at this size it’s barely breaking at a beach-and-reef setup like Bulli.
So, the standout? Honestly, there isn’t one. The only windows where you’ll get a board wet are Friday the 28th of August morning and Saturday the 29th of August morning. They’re both clean with light winds and small 3ft ENE swell – not epic, but you won’t be fighting a crowd. The rest of the 16 days is mostly tiny, onshore, or both. For a fairly consistent spot like Bulli, this is a lean run, but forecasts can shift. Keep an eye on it.
Rusty.
