The Lowdown
G'day, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the table for the next couple of weeks.
Look, I'm not gonna lie to you – it's a tough stretch. We've got a long, quiet run ahead with very little to get excited about. The first decent opportunity doesn't show up until Tuesday morning, the 25th of August, and even then, it's nothing to write home about.
Bulli Beach is the only spot in the frame, so we're stuck with what we've got. It's a beach and reef setup, exposed to the swell, and the optimum direction is from the NE.
On Tuesday morning, the 25th, we see a small pulse of NE swell around 4ft with a short, weak period of just 6 seconds. The combined energy is moderate, reading 145 (moderate). The wind is a light N breeze, which is cross-offshore, so the surface will be clean. It's surfable, but very ordinary. The afternoon sees the swell bump up to 5ft but with a period still only 7 seconds, and the combined energy jumps to 469 (strong). However, we've got light rain and that same N wind, so conditions are marginal. It's a bit of a mess, really.
Thursday morning, the 27th of August, is probably the pick of the period. The swell drops back to 3ft from the NE, still with an 8-second period, and the combined energy is weak at 91. But the wind is glassy – dead calm – from the SE. That's a major positive. The waves will be clean and smooth, ideal for a longboard or a funboard. It's small, but it's the cleanest it'll be all week.
After that, it's a slow grind. The 28th through the 5th of September sees swell heights consistently below 3ft, with periods anywhere from 6 to 11 seconds, and the combined energy rarely breaks 100 (weak). The wind is light and variable, often offshore or cross-offshore, so there will be clean windows, but the surf is just too small to be worthwhile. It's a real flat spell.
Now, there's a late pulse trying to build on Sunday, the 6th of September. The morning shows 4ft from the NE with a 7-second period, and the combined energy is 113 (moderate). The wind is a moderate NNE breeze, cross-offshore, keeping it clean. The afternoon bumps up to 4ft with the same short period, and the combined energy hits 230 (moderate), but the wind swings to a moderate NE cross-shore, which will chop it up a bit. It's a tease, but it's still poor surf overall.
The water temperature is about average for this time of year, so nothing to worry about there.
To be honest, there's no standout here. The cleanest, most user-friendly wave will be the Thursday morning, 27th of August glass-off at Bulli Beach. It's tiny, but it's the only time you'll find a clean, glassy surface. If you're a beginner, that's your window. The late pulse on the 6th of September is for those who are desperate and don't mind a bit of chop.
Stay patient, and keep an eye on the forecasts. It tends not to stay this quiet for long.
Rusty.
