The Lowdown
G'day, Rusty here, and I've got the lowdown on what's coming our way for the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, we're looking at a solid start to the period. The standout is Monday 20 July. The energy is up there, clocking in at 787 (moderate wave energy), with a solid 6ft swell rolling in from the ENE. The period is a nice 11 seconds, so there's some proper groundswell in the mix. That, combined with a light NNW breeze, is going to keep things tidy. Bulli Beach is the spot for the advanced crew, and you'll want to be out there Monday morning. It's a beach and reef setup, exposed to the swell, and while it's a consistent spot, the crowds can sometimes be an issue. The water temperature is about average for the time of year, so no shocks there.
We'll see conditions hold up pretty well into Tuesday morning, 21 July. The swell drops a touch to 5ft, still with that 11-second period, but the energy is down to 436. The wind stays light from the NNW, so it'll still be a clean session. By the afternoon, the swell eases a bit more, and the wave quality starts to slip.
Wednesday 22 July is still ridable, but it's getting smaller. A 4ft swell with a 10-second period, and an offshore breeze from the W is keeping it clean. The energy is at 257, so it's still got some push, but it's not the same as the start of the week.
From Thursday 23 July right through to the end of the month, we hit a long dry spell. The swell drops right off, with wave heights barely registering and the energy plummeting. It's a solid week of poor surf conditions, with nothing to get excited about. The wind switches around, but without any swell, it doesn't matter.
August starts off flat, but things begin to stir again on Sunday 02 August. A tiny 1ft groundswell from the ENE with a very long 16-second period slides in, but the energy is only at 26. It's a tease, and the onshore wind won't help. Tuesday 04 August morning is the first sign of life again, with a 2ft SE swell and a 13-second period, giving us 85 in energy. The wind is cross-off from the NNW, so it might be surfable, but it's ordinary. The long-range forecast has a bit of a pulse, but it's still uncertain.
So, to sum it up: Monday 20 July morning is your best bet, and it's a clear winner. Get amongst it early. After that, you're waiting a long time for anything decent.
Rusty.
