The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Bit of a slow start on the Bulli front, but there’s a couple of absolute crackers further down the track if you can wait.
For the next week or so, it’s pretty quiet. The surf is flat or tiny right through from Tuesday the 14th through to Saturday the 18th – we’re talking barely a ripple, with weak onshore winds and poor conditions most of that time. A real lull.
Sunday the 19th sees a pulse of new energy roll in, but it’s marginal. The swell jumps to 5ft from the ENE with a period of 10 seconds on the morning, building to 6ft ENE by the arvo with an 11 second period. Combined energy reaches 408 in the morning and 773 by the afternoon – moderate wave energy building into the strong range. Winds turn light and cross-offshore through the day, but it’s still a bit messy with a cross-on element in the afternoon, and tider might be an issue. Not the cleanest, but a sign of life.
Now, Monday the 20th is my pick of the first real chance. Bulli Beach is on the menu. Early morning you’ve got glassy conditions, a clean 5ft ENE swell running at 10 seconds, and combined energy of 512. That moderate wave energy with glassy wind is a beautiful combo for the beach-and-reef setup here – expect some fun, clean lines. By afternoon the wind switches sides to a gentle cross-shore, and it gets a bit chopped, so the window is the morning. Water temp is sitting at 65° with a 2° anomaly, so pretty much average for this time of year.
Tuesday the 21st morning looks tidy too – offshore NW breeze at 6 mph, clean 4ft ENE, 10 second swell (energy 331). That’s worth a paddle. The afternoon turns cross-shore again though.
Then we get the real standout. Thursday the 23rd is the one to circle on the calendar. Morning brings a 5ft E swell, very long period of 14 seconds and combined energy of 1040 (strong wave energy). Light offshore NW breeze at 6 mph, clean as a whistle. This is groundswell at its finest – those long 14-second intervals mean power and shape, and at a beach-and-reef break like Bulli, expect some proper lined-up waves. By afternoon it goes glassy with a 6ft E swell, 13 second period, and energy of 1070. Absolute dream conditions for experienced surfers. If you can handle the paddle between those long-period sets, you’re in for a treat. Crowds can be a factor here sometimes, so get in early.
Friday the 24th is still very good – 5ft E, 11 seconds, clean offshore WNW wind in the morning, glassy in the afternoon. Energy sits around 566-577. Still solid.
Saturday the 25th goes downhill quick – fresh 19 mph southerly winds, cross-on and lumpy. Swell is 6ft E but it’s a messy, blown-out affair. Not one for the paddle board.
The rest of the window into late July fades back to small, onshore junk with weak energy – not worth getting wet for.
So look, Monday morning the 20th is a solid go, but the real highlight is Thursday the 23rd – that’s a day for the experienced crew with a taste for long-period groundswell and clean, glassy or offshore conditions. Be there or be square.
Rusty.
