The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ll be straight with you – this outlook for Bulli Beach is a bit of a mixed bag, and you’ll need to be patient. There’s a long dry spell ahead, but the tail end of the forecast period has a real gem that’s worth keeping an eye on.
Right now, the first week is pretty quiet. We’ve got small, weak swell and mostly cross-shore or onshore winds, so not much worth paddling out for. The water temp is sitting at 64°, which is pretty normal for this time of year. The combined swell energy is low, often under 100, with swell heights barely tickling 3 ft and periods around 6 to 7 seconds – that’s short period, windswell stuff, not much push or shape.
The only real blip of hope in the first week is Wednesday morning, the 19th of August. We’ve got a 4 ft swell from the east, with a light cross-offshore breeze from the NNE, and the combined energy jumps to 231 (moderate). The conditions are clean. It’s not a standout, but it’s the best of a poor bunch for a quick session.
Then we hit a real gap. From Thursday, the 20th of August, right through to the morning of Tuesday, the 1st of September, there’s basically nothing. The swell drops to 0.7 ft to 3 ft, periods are short, and the scores are all zero. The wind is all over the place – cross, onshore, and occasionally offshore – but without any decent swell to work with, it’s a flat spell. You’d be better off waxing your board and waiting.
Now, the standout. On Wednesday morning, the 2nd of September, things suddenly wake up. There’s a solid 6 ft swell from the southeast, with a period of 10 seconds, and the combined energy is a beefy 660 (strong). The wind is glassy – literally no wind – and the conditions are described as “very good.” This is the one. That southeast direction is a good match for Bulli’s exposure. The swell is over 5 ft, so it’s a bit much for beginners, but for an advanced spot, it’s ideal. The long period of 10 seconds means longer gaps between sets, which can make the paddle out easier, and the waves will have more energy and shape. This is a proper session, but it’s over a week away, so treat it as promising, not a guarantee.
The Wednesday afternoon on the 2nd is still decent, with a 4 ft swell from the southeast and a 12-second period, but the wind turns cross-onshore, and the combined energy is 354 (moderate). It’s still surfable, but the morning is the clear winner.
Overall, Bulli Beach is a beach and reef setup, exposed to the swell, and it’s fairly consistent, but this run is mostly a bust. The second week has that one morning that could be epic. Keep an eye on it, and don’t be afraid to wait. It tends not to stay poor for long.
Rusty.
