The Lowdown

G’day, Rusty here, lookin’ at the surf over the next couple of weeks. To be honest, it’s a real mixed bag and mostly a mug’s game for a while, but there’s a small window where things come together for a decent session.

Right now, we’ve got a bit of a flat spell settin’ in. The first real chance to get wet is around Monday the 20th of July. The main event’s at Bulli Beach (beach and reef). We’ve got a solid ENE swell runnin’ at 6 ft with a clean 11-second period, and the combined energy is moderate at 802. That’s a decent wall of water, but it’s a bit on the bigger side for beginners – over 5 ft, so you’ll want to be comfortable. The big winner is the wind: NNW at 3 mph is glassy, offshore, and will have those lines lookin’ perfect. The water’s sittin’ at 65°F, which is about 2°F warmer than usual for this time of year, so nothin’ too wild, just a touch of comfort. This Monday morning is the standout of the whole outlook – clean, punchy, and the best on offer.

The ENE swell direction works well with the optimum NE for this spot, so the banks should be holding. That 11-second period is a nice groundswell, bringin’ energy and shape, but you’ll get longer lulls between sets at a beach break like this. It’s a fairly consistent spot, but crowds are possible – so get there early.

Come Monday afternoon, the wind swings NNE at 12 mph, turnin’ cross-offshore, and the swell drops a touch to 6 ft (energy 773). It’s still surfable, but that wind will put a bit of texture on it. Tuesday morning the 21st sees the swell backin’ off to 5 ft (energy 402) with clean cross-offshore NNW wind at 6 mph, and it’s still good, but nothin’ special.

After that, it’s a long, slow slide into the doldrums. From Tuesday afternoon the 21st right through to the end of the first week, the swell keeps droppin’. By Thursday the 23rd, we’re down to 2 ft (energy 83) and the wind is strong cross-offshore, poor conditions. From Friday the 24th onward, it’s basically flat – 0.7 ft or less, energy in the single digits. That flat spell runs for a solid 6 days from Friday the 24th through to Wednesday the 29th of July, with no surf worth paddlin’ out for. Just a big, empty ocean.

The second week limps in with a tease. On Thursday the 30th of July, a tiny 0.3 ft swell from the east at 12 seconds pops up, but it’s nothin’ to get excited about – energy at 6. Then on Friday the 31st of July, that same tiny swell has a 21-second period (energy 10), which is a very long-period groundswell. That’s a tease, but without any size, it’s just a ripple. It’ll be best at a point or reef, but Bulli Beach is a beach-and-reef setup, so that long period will make it break too straight and inconsistent. The early August days are all small, with 0.7 ft to 1 ft swell, energy under 100, and strong offshore winds – it’s more of a windswell than a surfable wave, and honestly, if you’re a kite surfer, these conditions might be more interesting than paddle surf.

So, the one true standout is Monday morning the 20th of July at Bulli Beach. Get it while it’s clean. After that, it’s a flat run until the second week, but those tiny, long-period pulses are too weak to do anything with. Stay optimistic – forecasts can change, but right now, it’s a short window.

Rusty.
