The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what the next couple of weeks are shaping up like for Bulli Beach.
Honestly, the next week or so is pretty flat and frustrating. We’ve got a long stretch of tiny, weak swells from the 21st right through to the 24th of August, with waves barely reaching 1ft. The combined energy is in the doldrums, barely hitting triple digits. It’s a real waiting game, and the waves that do show up are small and weak. The water temp is sitting at 64°, which is pretty normal for this time of year.
Things start to look a little more promising around the 25th of August. The swell bumps up to 4ft-4ft from the NE, with the combined energy jumping to 160 (Tuesday morning). The wind is a cross-off from the NNW, which will keep things clean. It’s still not a standout, but it’s the first real sign of life.
The 26th of August (Wednesday) sees the swell push to 5ft from the NE, with a combined energy of 284. That’s a solid increase in energy, but the problem is the wind – a cross-shore from the SSW in the morning, and then onshore from the SE in the afternoon, making it a choppy mess. For a beach and reef setup like Bulli, that wind is a killer. The 5ft swell is also getting a bit big for beginners, it’s more of an advanced-only day.
The best bet in this whole outlook looks like Thursday morning, the 27th of August. We’ve got a clean 3ft swell from the ENE, but the real winner is the glassy conditions from a light NE wind. The combined energy is 136, so it’s got some push. Surfable waves, but nothing to write home about. Still, it’s the cleanest the surf will be all week.
The rest of the period into the first week of September is a bit of a mixed bag. The 30th of August (Sunday) has a morning of glassy conditions with 3ft ENE swell, but the energy is dropping. The 2nd of September (Wednesday) brings a small 2ft swell with a longer period of 11 seconds, which is a groundswell, but the energy is weak at 84. The 5th of September (Saturday) sees a 5ft NE swell with a 5-second period, which is a short, choppy windswell, and the cross-off wind from the west will keep it clean, but the waves won't be any good.
Overall, there’s no real standout session here. The biggest issue is the persistent poor surf conditions. The wind is usually wrong, and when the swell is decent, the wind is onshore or cross-shore. For a beach and reef break like Bulli, the setup with that significant swell and poor quality means it's probably more interesting for the kite surfers than us paddle surfers.
Stay patient, folks. The forecasts can change.
Rusty.
