The Lowdown
G’day, I’m Rusty. Let’s have a look at what’s shaping up for Bulli Beach over the next couple of weeks. I gotta be straight with you – this is one of those outlooks where you’ll want to keep the board in the car and your expectations low. There’s a very thin window of something surfable early on, then a long dry spell. Let’s break it down.
The first action kicks off on Sunday the 19th of July, but it’s nothing to write home about. We’ve got a 6.9ft east-northeast swell rolling in with an 11-second period, so there’s some energy in the water (combined energy 1039). The water temp is 65°, which is about 1.8° degrees warmer than average for this time of year – not a big deal, but noticeable. Problem is, that wind is swinging from the south–cross-onshore – and the surf is described as marginal. This is an advanced break, but with onshore wind and that size, it’s going to be messy. If you’re an expert and desperate, you might find a few, but it’s a pass for me.
Monday the 20th of July morning is where the one real standout sits. Same east-northeast swell, dropping slightly to 5.9ft, period still 11 seconds, and the energy is solid (787). But the big difference is a light offshore from the north-northwest. The combination of that clean offshore wind and a decent groundswell means Bulli Beach (Sydney) should actually have some clean, lined-up sets. This is the best on offer – if you can get out for a Monday morning session, that’s your moment. The afternoon goes cross-off with a stronger northerly, so morning is the call.
From Tuesday the 21st, the swell starts to fade fast. Tuesday morning still has 4.6ft at 10 seconds (energy 410) and light cross-off wind – surfable but nothing special. By Wednesday afternoon the 22nd, the swell drops to 3.3ft and the wind goes glassy for a brief moment, but the energy is down to just 184, so it’s small and weak. After that, we hit a wall.
From Thursday the 23rd of July right through to the end of the forecast on Monday the 3rd of August, the swell is tiny – mostly 1.3ft or less, often with no combined energy to speak of (down to single digits for days). The wind is often cross-off or cross-on, and many sessions are marked as poor. There are a few days with offshore wind, like the 28th and 29th of July, but the swell is essentially flat (0.0ft to 0.3ft). The only thing of note is a couple of very long-period swells (22 seconds, 21 seconds) around the 31st of July and 1st of August, but with heights of just 0.3ft to 0.7ft, that energy is not translating into anything you can ride. It’s a ghost town.
So, yeah – this is a long, dry stretch. The gap in decent surf is basically from the 21st onwards, with only that Monday morning window being the one to chase. For a spot that’s fairly consistent usually, this kind of blank run isn’t totally abnormal, but it’s a bummer. If these winds had hit a bigger swell, we’d be laughing. As it stands, that Monday 20th July morning is your only real shot. After that, maybe the kite surfers will get a look at the strong cross-shore winds on the 1st of August, but for a paddle surfer, it’s time to wax a longboard and hope for a change in the charts.
Stay patient, mates.
