The Lowdown
G'day, I'm Rusty. Let's have a look at the surf ahead for Bulli Beach.
Alright, it's a bit of a slow start. We've got a long stretch of pretty ordinary conditions coming up. Through Thursday the 20th and into the weekend, there's barely a ripple worth paddling for. Confidence is low for the next week or so—just small, weak swell with poor conditions. The water temp is sitting about average for this time of year, around 65°, so nothing unusual there.
Thursday morning the 20th has some small 3 ft NE swell coming in at a short 6 seconds, with combined energy of just 97, so it's weak. The wind is a light N breeze, cross-off, so it's clean, but honestly, it's surfable but very ordinary. The afternoon picks up a touch to 3 ft, but the wind swings NNE and picks up, still cross-off. Friday morning the 21st is similar—3 ft NE swell, short period, clean with a light W breeze, but still nothing exciting. By Friday afternoon, it drops to 3 ft and the wind is NNW, still clean, but the score is poor. Saturday the 22nd is tiny—1 ft—and the wind goes SE onshore in the afternoon, so don't bother. Sunday the 23rd has glassy conditions with a 0.7 ft ENE swell, but it's just too small. Monday the 24th offers a bit more, 3 ft to 3 ft NE swell, but the wind is mostly light and cross-off or glassy, yet the overall quality is still poor. The energy stays weak, under 100. Tuesday the 25th sees some rain and a 2 ft to 3 ft swell, but the wind is cross or cross-on, and the energy is still low. Wednesday the 26th has a 4 ft S swell in the morning, period 6 seconds, and combined energy of 206, so moderate, but the wind is a fresh 30 km/h SSW cross-shore, making it lumpy. Not good for surfing.
Now, the standout is late in the period. On Monday the 31st of August, we get a proper pulse. The morning brings a 10 ft NE swell, period 8 seconds, with a huge combined energy of 1187. That's strong energy. The wind is light NNW, cross-off, so it'll be clean. This is excellent surf for experienced surfers—over 8 ft, so it's experts only. The afternoon drops a bit to 10 ft ENE, but the wind picks up to 25 km/h N, still cross-off, but it's more marginal. Then Tuesday the 1st of September morning sees a 13 ft ENE swell, period 10 seconds, and combined energy of 3463—very strong. The wind is W at 15 km/h, cross-off, so it's clean, but again, this is big, powerful surf only for the confident. The afternoon has the same swell but an onshore ESE breeze, so it gets messy. After that, the swell drops through Wednesday and Thursday, with E swell around 8 ft to 5 ft, but the wind turns cross-on or cross-shore, and conditions get choppy or marginal. By Friday the 4th of September, it's back to small, glassy waves at 3 ft to 2 ft, with low energy.
So, if you're hanging for a wave, the only real standout is Monday the 31st of August morning—big, clean, and powerful, but it's a heavy one. The first week is a write-off, so don't hold your breath. For the big stuff later, gear up and be ready.
Rusty.
