The Lowdown
Alright, mate, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the cards for the next couple of weeks.
We're starting off with a bit of a tease. The forecast opens Sunday afternoon, the 19th of July, with a solid 6ft swell from the ENE, but it's carrying a lot of energy (848) and a clean 11-second period. The problem is the wind is light onshore from the SSE, so it's going to be a bit crumbly and messy. The water temp is sitting at 66°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year.
The real standout is Monday morning, the 20th of July. The swell drops just a fraction to 6ft from the ENE, but the wind swings to a light offshore from the NNW. That's the golden ticket. With 787 energy and a clean 11-second period, Bulli Beach (beach and reef) should be offering up some proper, clean walls. This is the best on offer – get out there early before the breeze picks up. The swell is a bit solid for the beginners, but for the advanced crew, it's going to be a treat.
Monday afternoon, the wind goes cross-offshore from the NNE, and the 6ft swell starts to get a little lumpy. It's still surfable but the quality drops. Tuesday morning, the 21st of July, the swell backs off to 5ft from the ENE with 410 energy, and a cross-offshore wind keeps things reasonable. It's good, but not as clean as Monday morning.
From Tuesday afternoon right through to the end of July, the swell drops away and the energy dries right up. We're looking at a long, flat spell with only knee-to-waist high dribble and poor conditions. The wind is all over the shop, and the combined energy falls into the weak range. There's a long gap of absolutely nothing to get excited about.
Then, on the 29th of July, we get a late pulse of 4ft short-period windswell (7 seconds) from the NE. It's a little bump of energy (121) but the wind is cross-offshore and moderate, so it's not going to be worth the paddle out. The swell is too short and weak to offer any real shape.
The very end of the forecast, on the 1st and 2nd of August, shows a tiny pulse of 0.7ft swell from the ENE with a very long period (19 seconds, dropping to 16). This is a long-period groundswell, but it's barely a ripple. The energy is insignificant (34 dropping to 28), and while the wind is glassy or light, there's just no power to push any wave. It's a tease, not a session.
So, to sum it up: if you're a local, set your alarm for Monday morning, the 20th of July. That's the only real window we've got. After that, it's a waiting game.
Rusty.
