Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
G’day, Rusty here, and I’ve gotta be straight with you – this outlook for Bulli Beach is a tough one. We’re looking at a 16-day window from July 4th right through to July 19th, and honestly, there’s not much to get excited about. There’s a big gap of no-surf days at the start, and the only real window of anything rideable comes later on. Let’s break it down.
First up, the forecast kicks off on Saturday, July 4th, but don’t bother paddling out. The swell is tiny at 1 ft from the NE, with a short period of 8 seconds and weak combined energy of just 17. Water temp is sitting at 66°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year – a bit of a surprise, but it doesn’t help the waves. Morning wind is a light WSW cross-off, but the surf is just too small and weak to bother. That whole first weekend and Monday are a write-off – poor conditions, no decent swell, mostly cross-onshore winds. Sunday morning on July 5th has a 0.7 ft swell from the ENE with a long period of 13 seconds, but the combined energy is only 35 – that’s not even enough to form a proper wave.
The gap stretches right through to Tuesday morning, July 7th, when we finally see some pulse. Tuesday morning brings a 3 ft swell from the SE with a 13-second period and combined energy of 506 – that’s moderate energy, so there’s actually some power behind it. But the wind is a moderate cross-shore from the SSW, making it choppy. The guidance says Bulli Beach is a beach-and-reef break, fairly consistent, and it handles NE swell best. That SE swell is not its friend, and with the cross wind, it’s just marginal. The score out of 10 is a 1 – only worth a look if you’re desperate and it’s low tide.
Wednesday, July 8th, morning shows a 2 ft ESE swell at 14 seconds, with moderate energy of 192. Again cross-shore wind SSW – not ideal. Afternoon picks up to 3 ft at 12 seconds, energy of338, but still poor conditions. No standouts here.
Then comes a long dry spell again. From Thursday, July 9th, through to Saturday morning, July 11th, there are zeros and near-zeros. Saturday, July 11th, morning actually has glassy conditions with a 2 ft ESE swell at 8 seconds –; energy only 36 – but it’s just too small. Afternoon is glassy again with2 ft from the E at 7 seconds and energy of 60 – still not worth a paddle.
Now, here’s where it gets interesting. Sunday morning, July 12th, is the only true standout in this whole outlook. We’ve got a clear sky, light NW offshore wind at 6 mph – that’s going to make for clean conditions. Swell is 3 ft from the SE at 9 seconds, with combined energy of 138. It’s not big, but that offshore wind will groom it nicely. The water temp anomaly by that point isn’t given, but earlier was a touch warmer – doesn’t matter. This is your best window all fortnight. The break is fairly consistent, and crowds are sometimes an issue at Bulli, so with the clean conditions, you might have company. But it’s a beach-and-reef setup, and that SE swell is a bit off the optimum NE direction, so expect a bit of a wonky line-up. Still, 3 ft with offshore wind is surfable and fun. That’s your Sunday session.
After that, it goes downhill again. Monday, July 13th, has a 1 ft ESE swell at 10 seconds, with a light cross-off wind – clean but tiny. Tuesday, July14th, is even smaller. From Wednesday, July 15th, all the way to Saturday, July 19th, it’s mostly zeros and junk. There’s a late pulse on Friday morning, July 17th, with a 2 ft SE swell at 12 seconds and energy of 151, but the wind is a moderate cross-onshore – choppy and messy. Not worth it.
So in short: this is a lean period. The first week is a total loss. The one bright spot is Sunday, July 12th, with clean offshore winds and a small but workable swell. After that, it’s back to flatness. Keep an eye on the forecasts, because a 3 ft SE swell with offshore wind is better than nothing, but don’t expect a classic Bulli session.
Rusty.
