The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’.

Well, I'll be honest with you, the next two and a half weeks are looking pretty bleak for a paddle. The only spot on the radar is Bracklesham, and it’s an inconsistent beginner spot. We’ve got a long run of nothing good. For the first week, the swell is tiny and the wind is mostly cross or onshore, making for messy, poor conditions. The first few days have energy so weak it’s barely registering – like 15 and 19, just weak.

On Thursday the 17th, we see a bit of a spike. The swell bumps up to 5ft out of the SW, with combined energy climbing to 129 – that’s moderate. But don't get your hopes up. The wind is a strong cross-onshore at 25 mph, and it's described as messy. The wave quality is rated poor. This one is strictly for the die-hards who don’t mind a wrestling match, and with the size and wind, it’ll be more of a fight than a glide. For beginners, 5ft is already pushing it.

Honestly, nothing in this window stands out as a true epic session. The water temp on the first morning is 67°, which is a whopping 5° warmer than normal – that’s really unusual, so you might be able to go in with a thinner suit, but the surf just isn’t there to make use of it.

There’s a bit of a break around Sunday the 20th morning with a light offshore from the NW, but the swell is only 1ft. Clean but tiny.

By the time we get to the end of September and into the 30th, there’s a long-period groundswell showing up from the south, but the period is 13-19 seconds, which is very long. Long period is good for shape on a point break or reef, but at a beach break like Bracklesham, it can break too straight. Plus the swell height is tiny – 0.3ft to 1ft – and the wind is often onshore. The combined energy is mostly in the weak single or double digits.

There’s a potential for kite surfers on Thursday the 17th and Friday the 18th with strong cross-shore winds and moderate swell, but for a paddle surfer, there’s no real highlight. The whole 16-day window is a bit of a write-off. It’s one of those blank runs that can happen here. Keep an eye out, forecasts can shift.

Rusty.
