The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Gotta be straight with you – it’s a tough run ahead for Bracklesham. The whole 16-day window is a bit of a bummer, honestly. We’re looking at a long stretch of nothing worth paddling out for, with the first proper sign of any life not showing up until the 12th of August, and even that is a real long shot.

For the first week and a half, it’s flat. Seriously flat. We’re talking ankle-snappers at best, with the combined swell energy barely ticking over (mostly single-digit values, like just 1 to 9). The wind is mostly cross-onshore or onshore, messing up whatever tiny bump there is. There’s a brief moment on the morning of Friday the 7th of August where it goes glassy – a light NNW breeze at 3 mph – but with a wave of 0.7ft, it’s a lake, not a surf break. It’s hard to stay optimistic, but this is Bracklesham; it’s an inconsistent spot, so a blank run like this isn't unheard of.

The only glimmer in the whole forecast is the morning of Wednesday the 12th of August. The swell direction finally matches the optimum SW, and you get a clean, cross-off wind from the WNW at 9 mph. The swell is still tiny at 1ft, but the period bumps up to 10 seconds, which is a longer period groundswell. The combined energy climbs to a moderate 22. It’s still not a classic, but it’s the best the charts are offering. After that, it’s back to a messy, strong onshore wind and choppy slop through to the 16th.

So, keep the board in the car, watch the horizon, and hope the next forecast brings some better news. The setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing with the strong winds we see later in the window.

Rusty.
