The Lowdown

Right, folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you: this is a tough one for Bournemouth. The next 16 days are looking like a real write-off for any kind of decent surf. I’ve had a good look at the numbers, and the truth is there’s not a single session that’s worth paddling out for.

The problem is a real lack of any proper swell. For the first week, we’re seeing nothing but tiny, weak waves. The best of a bad bunch comes on Wednesday the 5th, with a swell height of 5ft 3in to 6ft 6in, but the period is a dismal 6 seconds, and the onshore wind is howling at 22 mph. The water is going to be a messy, lumpy chop. The combined energy does hit 340 (moderate wave energy) on the Wednesday afternoon, but with those winds, it’s a complete mess. This is one for the kites, not the paddle.

Looking at the whole 16-day window, it’s a desert. The swell bumps up slightly around the 5th, but the quality is just not there. After that, we’re back to tiny 0ft 8in to 3ft slop, with short periods and mostly cross to onshore winds. There are a few clean windows on the 10th and 12th, for example, with light offshore winds, but the swell is a pathetic 0ft 4in. You can’t surf that.

The one bright spot is the water temp. For the Sunday morning slot, it’s sitting at 70°F, which is a massive 9°F above average for the time of year. It’s much warmer than normal, so if you’re just having a swim, it’s lovely. But for surfing? Nah.

This is a real dry spell for Bournemouth Pier. The break is inconsistent at the best of times, and this forecast is a perfect example of that. It’s a shame, but the sea does what it wants. We’ll just have to wait for the next blow.

Rusty.
