The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – the next 16 days at Bude are a tough watch. The forecast is a long, drawn-out run of poor surf conditions, with a big gap of no real hope for most of the period.
We start off with nothing. The first few days are a write-off. Saturday the 5th and Sunday the 6th show some swell, but the wind is all over the place and the wave comment is just “poor surf conditions.” You’re looking at tiny, messy waves with a score of zero. Not worth paddling out.
Monday the 7th sees a jump in size with a 7ft swell from the west, packing a strong 1370 (combined energy). The period is a solid 13 seconds, so there’s some push behind it. But the wind is onshore and strong, and the conditions are still rated as poor. This is a big, blown-out mess. For a beginner spot like Bude, that 7ft is going to be too much, and the wind will chop it up badly. This one is for experts only, and even then, it’s going to be a battle. The following days are a slow decline, with wind and chop keeping things ugly.
The only glimmer of hope, and I mean the only one, is Sunday the 13th. The morning session shows a glassy, clean surface with that ENE wind at just 3 mph. The swell is a small 3ft from the west, with a 9-second period and a combined energy of 119. The wave comment finally says “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions,” scoring a 1. It’s not going to be epic, but for a brief moment, it might be ridable. The water is also running much warmer than normal for this time of year, about 65°, which is a nice touch for a quick session.
After that, it’s back to the same old story. The following week is a desert of weak, short-period windswell and onshore winds. By Wednesday the 16th, we get another brief glassy morning, but again with tiny, weak waves.
Honestly, if you’re desperate for a paddle, stick to Sunday the 13th morning. It’s the only window where the wind might let you have a go. The rest of the 16 days is a long, flat gap with no real standouts. Don’t hold your breath.
Rusty.
