The Lowdown

Alright, let's have a look at what's coming down the pipe for Bude.

Alright, folks, it's Rusty here, and I've got to be straight with you – the next couple of weeks are looking like a bit of a mixed bag, with a whole lot of nothing good on offer for a while. The water is sitting at a very warm 66°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, but don't let that fool you.

First up, we have a massive gap. From Thursday the 27th of August right through to Friday the 4th of September, it's a write-off. The wind is cross-on, the sea state is lumpy, choppy, and messy. We've got a bit of swell at times, like on Saturday the 29th where the wave energy hits a strong 1277, but with a howling 28 mph cross-shore wind and rain, that 10ft swell is going to be a beast. For you beginners, that's way too big, and for everyone else, it's going to be a close-out mess. Honestly, that setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.

Then, just when you think we're through it, the first real glimmer of hope pops up on Saturday the 5th of September. That morning, the wind goes glassy from the ESE at 3 mph. The swell is a modest 4ft from the west with a 10-second period, and even though the combined energy is only moderate at 358, the conditions are described as "good surf conditions." For Bude, a beach break, that 4ft will be super clean and fun for everyone. The afternoon sees the swell bump up to 8ft from the WSW, which is a bit of a jump, but it's still glassy. That's your window, right there. That Saturday is the standout.

After that, the wind comes back onshore from Sunday the 6th of September, and it's mostly poor conditions again with fresh breezes and lumpy surf through to the end of the forecast period on Friday the 11th. There are a few windows of cleaner wind, like the cross-offshore on the 11th, but the swell is tiny, only 2ft, so there's just not enough push for a decent wave.

So, to sum it up: hang tight through a long, rough patch with no recommendations until Saturday the 5th of September. That's your day. Get out there for the morning glass, because the rest of the run is sadly a washout.

Rusty.
