The Lowdown

Imperial Units

Alright, Rusty here. Let’s break down what’s happening at Bude.

Right now, the ocean is flat as a pancake. The first real chance at a wave is a few days out, so don’t bother waxing up just yet. On Monday morning, the 24th of August, we’re looking at a tiny 0.7ft west swell with a 9 second period, and the energy is pathetic (13). The conditions are just poor. The rest of the week is the same story – tiny, weak swell and mostly cross or onshore breezes. The water is a warm 66°F, which is much warmer than usual for this time of year, so at least a swim won’t be a shock.

We’ve got a long stretch of nothing until the end of the month. The first few days are a total write-off. Swell starts to show a pulse around the 30th of August, but it’s messy with fresh cross-on winds and a lumpy sea. The energy climbs to 140, but it’s still not clean.

The only real standout hits on the 31st of August (Monday morning). A proper 10ft W swell rolls in with a decent 11 second period. The combined energy is strong (1908). But the wind is howling onshore from the west at 22 mph, which will trash the surface. This is a “big, but blown out” scenario. The swell is too big for beginners, and with the wind on it, this is more of a kitesurfing day than a clean paddle session. The afternoon drops to 7ft but the wind stays heavy.

The following week from September 1st to the 8th is a mixed bag. There’s constant swell, but it’s mostly onshore or cross-on. The wind constantly messes with the quality. The 7th of September (Monday) looks like the biggest of the whole run, with a massive 12ft W swell, a very long 17 second period, and a massive 7992 energy reading. This is true groundswell. But again, the wind is onshore from the WNW at 16 mph. For a point break, this long period could be magic, but Bude is a beach break, so that long period will tend to dump and close out. This is expert-only and it’s going to be a battle.

Honestly, if you’re after clean, user-friendly waves, the whole 16 days looks pretty grim. The energy is there for a few days, but the wind never plays ball. The best bet for a beginner or intermediate is to sit this one out. If you’re an expert, the 31st of August and the 7th of September have the size, but you’ll be fighting the wind. It’s a frustrating outlook for Bude.

Rusty.
