The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it. It’s Rusty here, and I’ve been staring at the charts for our stretch of coast, and I’ve got to be straight with you: it’s going to be a tough hunt for a wave for a while. The good news is we’ve got a decent window of opportunity if you’re patient and picky.
For the coming days, it’s a flat spell. The swell energy is weak, with combined readings mostly in the single digits to low double digits (10, 8, 14). We're looking at a lot of small, junky waves. The water temp is sitting at about 65.3°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least it'll be comfortable while you're waiting around.
The first real chance for anything starts midweek on Wednesday the 12th. It’s not much, but we finally see some life with a 2.3ft west swell at 10 seconds, and the energy ticks up to 96. The morning is the call, with a light easterly offshore wind making things clean. It won’t be great, but you might get a few crumbly ones if you’re keen. Don’t expect much more than a grovel.
The surf tries to build a little into Thursday the 13th, with a 3ft west swell and a slightly longer 11-second period. The energy bumps up to 185, which is moderate. But the wind swings around to the north, putting us into a cross-shore chop. It’s going to be messy. The afternoon gets worse with a cross-onshore. You can probably skip it unless you’re desperate.
We see a bigger push of energy on the 23rd and 24th. On Sunday the 23rd, the afternoon has a 4.3ft west swell, but it’s short-period (6 seconds) and lumpy with an onshore wind. The combined energy gets to 154, but it won’t be clean. The real standout of this whole stretch, if you can wait, is Monday morning, August 24th. We’ve got a 4.6ft west-northwest swell with a light east-northeast cross-offshore wind. The combined energy is up at 245, which means there’s some real push behind it. The water will be clean, and this looks like the best chance for a proper surf. It’s still not big, but it’s the most promising of the whole period.
Don't get too excited about Bude's consistency, it's fairly consistent at this time of year, but this run is very poor. There will be many days with no waves at all. Keep your expectations low, and maybe save your energy for that Monday the 24th. It’s a long way out, so it might change, but that’s the one on the radar.
