The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming down the pipe for Bude.

Honestly, the next week and a half is pretty grim. We’ve got a long stretch of poor surf conditions from now through the weekend of the 20th. The swell is coming in, but the wind is just wrecking it—mostly onshore or cross-onshore, often fresh, and making a mess of things. You’ll see moderate wave energy at times (160 to 320), but it’s just not working for us.

The first real glimmer of hope comes on Monday, 21st. It’s not a standout, but the wind will be light from the SE at 3 mph, giving us a clean, cross-off breeze. The swell is small—only 2ft from the west with a 9-second period—and the energy is weak (94). It’s surfable but very ordinary. Still, if you’re desperate, it’s the best we’ve had in days.

Then there’s a gap of a few days with very small, clean but weak surf. Tuesday, 22nd, brings a glassy morning with 3ft west swell at a long 12 seconds (171 energy). That’s a proper groundswell, and the glassy conditions mean it might be worth a paddle. The water temperature is 65°, which is 4° warmer than average for this time of year—so it feels much warmer than normal.

The real standout, though, is in the second week. On Tuesday, 29th of September, we get a nice pulse. The morning has 2ft swell from the west, but with a very long period of 14 seconds (139 energy), and offshore wind from the east at 15 mph. That’s clean, lined-up, and promising. The afternoon bumps up to 2ft from the WNW at 14 seconds (189 energy), with a cross-off breeze. This is the day to circle for the experienced surfer—the long period suits Bude’s setup, and the wind will be your friend.

No other break is in the data, so Bude is the only option. Crowds can be an issue here as it’s ‘often’ busy, so keep that in mind on the 29th. For the rest of the month, it’s either small or windy. Stay patient.

Rusty.
