The Lowdown

Imperial version

Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this 16-day outlook for Bude is a real struggle. The first week and a half is mostly a write-off with choppy, cross-onshore winds and poor surf conditions. You’ll be waiting.

The first real chance to get wet is on Tuesday, September 15th. The wind is light and cross-offshore from the southeast, so the surface will be clean. The swell is a weak 3ft from the west, with a 10-second period – that’s a groundswell, so it’ll have some grunt, but it’s not big. The combined energy is moderate at 194. The water is much warmer than usual, about 4°F warmer than average for this time of year. The break is fairly consistent and fairly exposed, and it handles a west swell. Crowds are often a problem, so expect a few heads. The waves are surfable but ordinary – a longboard or a funboard is the call.

After that, it’s quiet again up until the 21st. On Monday, September 21st, we get a clean offshore wind from the east, with the swell holding at 2ft to 3ft from the west. The energy is light to moderate, between 114 and 138. The offshore breeze will keep the faces clean, but it’s small. A session for the patient.

The best of the lot is probably the morning of Tuesday, September 22nd. The wind is light offshore from the east, the swell is 3ft from the west, and it’s glassy. The energy is 136. It’s not pumping, but it’s clean. Crowds will be there.

The final day of the forecast, Wednesday, September 23rd, sees a very long-period groundswell come in at 14 seconds, but the wind is onshore from the west-southwest, so it’s going to be messy. The energy is moderate at 232, but the wind ruins it.

Bottom line: if you’re desperate, the 15th, 21st, and 22nd of September offer the only clean windows. Otherwise, it’s a long, flat, and lumpy stretch. Patience is the name of the game.

Rusty.
