The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s on the table for the next couple weeks.
Right off the bat, I’ll be straight with you: the 16-day window at Bude is a tough read. We’ve got a long stretch of small, choppy, and mostly onshore conditions. The first real chance to paddle out is a quiet one, and it doesn’t truly get going until we’re well into the forecast.
The only real standout here is a fleeting moment of glass. On Tuesday morning, July 28th, the wind drops to a whisper from the south, going glassy. The swell is tiny at 1 ft out of the WNW with a period of 9 seconds. The combined swell energy is weak (48). It’s not going to blow you away, but for a beginner or someone wanting a longboard, that’s your cleanest, most soulful window. The water is sitting at 63°F, which is a touch warmer than usual for this time of year, so it’s a proper treat.
Beyond that, the rest of the month and into early August is a write-off. The wind is mostly cross-on from the NW or onshore, and the waves are either flat or messy. On Sunday, July 26th, the swell bumps up to 6 ft to 6 ft (combined energy up to 365), but it’s hammered by a fresh 22 mph cross-onshore wind, making it lumpy and poor. That’s more of a kite-surfing setup than a paddle session.
There’s a gap of many days with no real recommendation. The surf stays small and choppy right through to the end of the first week of August. On Tuesday, August 4th, there’s a slight uptick: a 4 ft swell from the NNW (period 6 seconds) with clean cross-offshore winds from the NE, but the combined energy is still only moderate (110) and the period is short, so it’s not going to be a classic.
The bottom line: if you’re an absolute beginner wanting a glassy, knee-high session, July 28th morning is your best bet. For everyone else, this is a quiet period. Bude is a fairly exposed spot, but it’s just not getting the love this time around. Forecasts can change though—it rarely stays this poor for long.
Rusty.
