The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer for Bude over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, it’s a pretty quiet start. We’ve got a long stretch of small, weak surf with messy winds, so don’t expect much action for the first week or so. From Friday the 21st right through until the end of the month, conditions are mostly poor. There’s a tiny bump on the morning of Saturday the 22nd with waves around 2ft from the west, but it’s a short-period 10 second swell and the energy is weak (71). The wind is offshore and clean, so it’ll be pretty, but you’ll be scratching for anything rideable. The morning of Sunday the 23rd is glassy with the wind straight from the east at just 5 km/h, but the swell is a mere 1.0ft – barely a ripple. That’s a solid 10-day gap of nothing really worth paddling out for.
The first real glimmer of hope comes on the morning of Wednesday the 2nd of September. That’s when we see a proper jump in size. The swell is 8ft from the west with a 9-second period, and the combined energy is a solid 1020 – that’s strong wave energy. The wind is offshore from the east-southeast at 30 km/h, keeping things clean. This is a big one, but at 8ft, it’s pushing into expert territory. It’s going to be powerful and likely too much for beginners. The break at Bude is fairly exposed to the west, so it’ll catch that energy well. The wind is fresh offshore, so the faces should be clean, but that’s a lot of water moving. The afternoon of the same day bumps up to 10ft from the west with a 10-second period and a massive 1700 combined energy. That’s a lot of power. The wind stays offshore, so it’s raw, clean, and strictly for the experienced crew.
Thursday the 3rd of September still has plenty of size – 7ft from the west, 10-second period, with 867 energy. The wind is offshore from the northeast, so it stays clean, but it’s still a solid, powerful swell. It’s a step down from Wednesday, but still not for the faint-hearted.
The standout here is clearly the morning of Wednesday the 2nd of September. It’s the biggest, cleanest, and most powerful swell of the entire forecast, with the west swell direction lining up perfectly with Bude’s optimum exposure. The offshore wind is a major plus. It’s a long-range call, so keep an eye on the forecasts, but if it holds, that’s the day to be in the water. For the confident surfers only.
Rusty.
