The Lowdown
Alright, let’s talk about Bude in proper units. The next couple of weeks are looking pretty bleak. You’re staring at a long stretch of flat, blown-out nothing. For the first week and a half, there’s no point even checking the cam.
The only real glimmer of hope comes on Monday, the 17th of August, in the morning. We’ve got a 4ft swell coming from the west, with a 9-second period. The wind is light and offshore from the north-northeast, so the waves will be clean and lined up. The water is a touch warmer than usual for this time of year, around 65°F. The combined energy is moderate (240), so it’s got a bit of grunt. It’s not a big swell, but it’s the only window where everything comes together. The break is well exposed to the west, and the swell direction is ideal. It’s a beginner-friendly wave, but expect other folks to have the same idea.
After that morning, it’s back to the struggle. The afternoon turns choppy, and the rest of the week is a mess of tiny, weak waves and onshore winds. By the 20th and 21st, the wind is howling at 18-25 mph, and the swell is under 2ft – that’s a kite-surfing day, not a surfing day.
So, bottom line: one decent morning on the 17th of August. That’s your only real shot. Everything else is a waiting game.
