The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s break down what Bude is offering up.

Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – the next week and a half is a tough one. We’ve got a solid run of days with decent swell heights, but the wind is just wrecking it. That west-northwest groundswell is there, but every time it looks like it might get good, the wind swings onshore or cross-onshore, leaving it lumpy and choppy. It’s a real shame, because the wave energy is there – we’ve got readings in the hundreds, and even hitting over a thousand (1208) on the 4th of September, but the quality is just not there for a paddle.

For a good stretch from the 30th of August right through to the 7th of September, it’s a write-off. The wind is just too strong and from the wrong direction. The 4th of September sees a big 10ft swell from the WNW, but with a 35 km/h onshore wind, that’s a beast for the experts only, and it’s going to be a messy, blown-out mess. The 5th of September sees the swell drop, but the wind is still cross-onshore. The 6th of September is the first day we see a clean window, but the swell is tiny at 2ft and the energy is weak (44-53), so it’s more of a longboard cruise than a proper surf.

The real standout, and the one to circle on your calendar, is the 12th of September. That Saturday morning we’ve got a 2ft swell from the west, but the key is the wind. It’s offshore from the ENE at just 10 km/h. That’s clean, glassy conditions. The period is a decent 11 seconds, so there’s a bit of groundswell energy behind it. The combined energy is a moderate 148. It’s not the biggest swell, but for Bude, with that offshore wind, it’s the cleanest wave you’re going to get in this whole forecast. The 13th of September is also looking promising with a similar offshore wind, but the swell is a touch smaller and the energy is weaker (92). So the 12th is your best bet.

So, for the next fortnight, it’s a waiting game. The first week is a write-off due to wind. The second week offers a few windows of clean, small surf, but the 12th of September is the day to try and get out there. It’s not a massive swell, but it’ll be clean.

Rusty.
