The Lowdown

Right, let's have it. The surf scene at Bude for this run is a proper heartbreaker. Sure, the water's warm, sitting at 65°, that's a good 4° above what we'd normally see, which is nice for the paddles back out. But the waves themselves? A whole bunch of nothing good for the first stretch.

From Friday the 11th through the 19th, it’s a write-off. We've got swell on the charts, but it's getting torn apart. It’s all onshore or cross-onshore, and the energy is getting completely chopped up. Some of it's moderate, like that 301 on Friday morning, but it's all rough and bumpy. Even when the swell gets to 5ft on Thursday the 17th, the wind is howling at 30 km/h and just makes it a lumpy mess. This is more of a kite-surfing wind farm than a clean surf spot. The periods are short too, mostly in the 7 to 10 second range, so there’s not much push or shape to it.

Then, around Sunday the 20th, the wind finally does a favor and swings offshore. We get some clean conditions, light and gentle with the E and ESE winds. But it's a cruel joke because the swell just falls out of bed. We're looking at 2ft to 3ft waves. It's clean, sure, but it's small and weak, with energy readings that barely struggle past the low hundreds. It'll keep your board wet, but you won't be getting any thrills.

The one day that looks like a proper stand-out is Wednesday the 23rd. Forget that tiny stuff. We've got a moderate offshore breeze from the E, and the swell jumps back up to 3ft from the W with a period of 13 seconds. That's your groundswell, with real power behind it, and the combined energy reads 345. This is the day. That long period is going to wrap around Bude properly. It'll be clean, it'll have some push, and it will be worth the wait. The morning will be the pick, as the wind goes a bit cross-offshore in the afternoon.

After that, the swell backs right off. Thursday the 24th has a few small, clean leftovers around 2ft to 3ft, but by Friday the 25th, the swell is down to nothing, the wind is back on it, and it’s gone. That’s it. So if you want a wave out of this, pencil in Wednesday the 23rd. It's over a week out, so don't bet the farm on it, but it's the only real light at the end of this tunnel.
