The Lowdown
Hey, it's Rusty. Let’s take a look at Bude in feet and miles per hour.
So, the next couple of weeks at Bude? Honestly, it’s looking poor. There’s a big gap of nearly two weeks with hardly any surf that’s worth a trip. The first real chance of a clean wave is way down the track.
Water temp is 67°, which is 5° above the average for this time of year – that’s a big anomaly, so the water will feel warm.
Kicking off on Saturday, 15 August, we’ve got a tiny 2ft swell from the west with a short 8-second period and 15 mph north winds blowing cross-shore. The combined wave energy is just 81 (weak). It’s choppy and ugly.
Sunday the 16th is worse – 1ft, 7-second period, light wind, energy down to 23. Hard pass.
Through the whole week from Monday 17th to Wednesday 26th, the pattern stays the same. Swells peak at 4ft on Tuesday the 18th (moderate energy at 149), but the wind is onshore from the west at 15 mph, ruining it. Every single day is labeled poor surf conditions. The wind is either cross, cross-on, or onshore for nine straight days.
Finally, a break appears on Thursday morning, 27 August. We get a tiny 2ft swell from the west (8-second period) with offshore wind from the east-northeast at 6 mph. That’s a light breeze and clean conditions. Combined energy is just 33. Not enough to get excited, but it’s clean. Then on Friday morning, 28 August, we see glassy conditions with a 1ft west-southwest swell, 8-second period, energy at 23. Glassy water is rare in this forecast, but the wave size is tiny.
So the standout is the morning of Friday, 28 August – glassy winds and a small clean swell. Only for a longboard or a foamie. Crowds are “often” at Bude, so you won’t be alone, even on a small day.
After that, Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th bring back onshore winds and 1ft to 2ft swells. Energy drops to just 10 (weak). No real push.
Bottom line: it’s a long dry spell. Bude can have these quiet runs. If you’re keen, the only real hope is that glassy Friday morning, but don’t expect much more than a gentle ride. Wait for a change.
Rusty.
