The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ll be straight with you – the next 16 days for Bar Beach are a mixed bag with only a few windows that’ll get you excited. The water temp’s sitting about average for this time of year, so no dramas there. The first few days are a write-off – tiny, weak, and just not worth paddling out for. Friday the 21st and Saturday the 22nd have nothing going on, with poor conditions and tiny swell. Sunday the 23rd morning sees a bit of life with a 3ft southerly swell, 11-second period, and glassy conditions – that’s a rare clean moment, but the waves are still ordinary and the energy is weak (176). It’s a beginner-friendly size, but don’t expect much.
Monday the 24th morning is similar with 3ft south swell, 10-second period, and clean conditions, but again, it’s just surfable, not pumping. The energy’s moderate (197). Tuesday the 25th and Wednesday the 26th mornings are offshore and clean, but the swell’s tiny – 2ft to 2ft – with weak energy (72-91). Not worth rushing.
Now, Thursday the 27th morning is the first real standout. We’ve got a 5ft S swell, 11-second period, and moderate energy (610) – that’s a solid bump. The wind’s cross-shore with a slight chop, so it’s a bit messy, but this is the biggest surf we’ve seen yet. It’s still only marginal, and the afternoon’s onshore, so make the most of the morning. This is intermediate-friendly, but beginners might find it a touch big.
The best window hits Friday the 28th. Morning has a 4ft S swell, 9-second period, with moderate offshore wind and clean conditions – that’s a beauty. Energy’s moderate (245). Afternoon’s even better with 3ft S swell, glassy cross-offshore wind, and clean surf. Energy’s up to 289. This is your pick of the fortnight – solid, clean, and fun for all levels. Bar Beach is exposed to the southeast, so that south swell wraps in nicely.
Then it all goes pear-shaped. Saturday the 29th and Sunday the 30th get smashed by strong onshore winds and big, messy swell – up to 8ft with strong energy (1375) – but it’s blown out. Not for paddle surfing; this looks more interesting for kite surfing. Monday the 31st morning has a brief glassy moment with 3ft E swell, but it’s ordinary. Tuesday the 1st of September through to Wednesday the 2nd are poor again.
The last little hope is Thursday the 3rd of September morning – a 4ft S swell, 8-second period, with light cross-offshore wind and clean conditions. Energy’s moderate (328). It’s promising but not a standout. Friday the 4th and Saturday the 5th are tiny and weak again.
So, bottom line: Friday the 28th is your best bet – clean, fun, and solid. Thursday the 27th morning is a backup if you’re desperate. The rest is mostly flat or blown out. Keep an eye on the forecasts, but don’t hold your breath.
Rusty.
