G’day, Rusty here.
Look, I’ll be straight with you – it’s a rough stretch ahead for Bar Beach. The next week or so is gonna test your patience, with a couple of small windows of hope later on.
We start off with a proper thumping from the south. Sunday the 5th has a solid 10ft swell from the S, with 12-second intervals, and a lot of energy behind it – we’re talking a combined energy of 2146 here. But the wind is a shocker: a moderate breeze from the SSW, cross-onshore and choppy. It’s poor surf conditions, plain and simple. This pattern sticks around into Monday and Tuesday, with the swell staying big – up to 12ft on Tuesday morning (combined energy of 4217!) – but the wind stays on it, making a mess. For beginners, this is way too big, and even for the experienced, the chop will ruin any chance of a clean ride. Honestly, the setup here is more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing right now.
We finally see a slight change by Wednesday the 8th morning. The swell drops to 8ft from the SE, period 11 seconds, but the wind is cross-shore and there’s a cross-chop. It’s only marginal – a 2 out of 10 kind of feel. Thursday the 9th is similar with 7ft swell, but the wind lightens up, shifting cross-onshore with small ripples. Still, it’s weak energy (885) and only a marginal call.
The first real glimmer of something decent comes on Friday the 10th morning. The swell has settled to 6ft from the SE, period 9 seconds. The wind goes light from the WSW, cross-offshore, and the conditions go clean. Finally, some shape! The combined energy is 554, so it’s moderate, but it’s the cleanest we’ve seen. Saturday the 11th morning is similar with 4ft from the SE, periods of 9 seconds, and a light cross-offshore breeze. Clean again, but the energy is dropping (392). This isn’t a standout by any stretch, but it’s the best on offer. Crowds are possible here, so expect company if you go.
After that, it fades fast. Sunday the 12th has a tiny 3ft swell, and from Monday the 13th onward, we’re scraping the bottom: 2ft, 1.0ft, down to 0.7ft by the 15th. The wind is mostly offshore or glassy, which is nice, but the swell is gone. The combined energy drops to two-digit numbers – that’s weak. There’s a small blip on Saturday the 18th with 2ft from the S, period 10 seconds, and a moderate offshore breeze, but it’s still very ordinary.
So to sum it up: the first nine or ten days are mostly a write-off with big, blown-out surf or tiny leftovers. Friday the 10th morning is your best bet – clean, manageable 6ft waves – but it’s not a world-beater. The long-range stuff into the second week is pretty flat. Don’t hold your breath.
Rusty.
