The Lowdown
G’day, I’m Rusty. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer at Bar Beach.
The opening week is pretty average, with only a few half-decent sessions sneaking in. It’s not a flat spell, but the quality is lacking for the most part. The good news is the second week starts to look a lot better, with a few mornings that are genuinely worth getting out of bed for.
Sunday morning the 23rd kicks things off with 4ft of S swell, period 10 seconds, combined energy of 301 (moderate). The wind is cross-onshore from the ENE at 6 mph, so it’s not clean. The water temp is about average for this time of year. This one’s for the die-hards only. The afternoon doesn’t improve – 4ft and messy.
Monday the 24th is cleaner in the morning with a light cross-off breeze from the N at 6 mph, but the swell drops to 3ft, 10 seconds, energy 194 (moderate). Surfable but nothing exciting. The afternoon gets ruined by a 16 mph cross-shore.
Tuesday morning the 25th shows a pulse of 5ft from the NE, but it’s only 7 seconds short-period stuff. The wind is cross-off from the NNW at 6 mph, so it’s clean. Energy is 271 (moderate). It’s surfable and the best so far, but that short period means it’s a bit bumpy and inconsistent. The afternoon is more of the same with a cross-shore mess.
Wednesday and Thursday are ordinary – small, onshore, or just poor. Friday morning the 28th is the first real standout. 3ft of S swell, 12 seconds, and combined energy of 422 (moderate). The wind is light cross-off from the W at 3 mph. Clean conditions. This is a solid session for a beach break – decent shape, easy paddling. The weekend after that fades out again with onshore winds.
Now here’s the real highlight: Monday morning the 31st of August. This one’s a beauty. 4ft of SSE groundswell with a very long 17-second period, combined energy of 890 (moderate to strong). Glassy conditions with no wind. This is the pick of the 16 days – clean, decent size, and that long period means proper waves with plenty of push. Just be aware, longer period swells can close out a beach break, but with the offshore wind and clean conditions, it’s worth the paddle.
Tuesday the 1st of September also has a good one: 3ft from the S, 13 seconds, energy 386 (moderate), with a moderate offshore from the NW at 12 mph. Clean and lined up. Another good morning.
After that, the second week tails off with smaller swells and less consistency, but Friday morning the 4th of September offers 4ft of S swell, 12 seconds, energy 427 (moderate), and light cross-off wind. That’s a solid finisher for the forecast period.
Overall, the first week is patchy with a few clean windows, but the real quality is in the last few days of August and the first days of September. Keep an eye on that Monday the 31st – that’s the one.
Rusty.
