Table - best surf conditions forecast for Bar Beach over the next 16 days.
Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let’s break down what’s coming.
We’ve got a slow start, but the first real window of surf kicks off this Friday afternoon at Bar Beach. The swell is coming from the south-east at 6 ft, with a period of 10 seconds, giving us a solid moderate wave energy (588). The water temp is sitting at 66°F, which is bang on average for this time of year, so no shock to the system there. Friday afternoon sees the wind going glassy with a light SSE breeze, meaning the surface will be clean. It’s a fairly consistent spot, but it’s also often crowded, so expect some company. The swell size is a bit much for total beginners, but it’s good fun for anyone with a bit of experience.
Saturday morning, the swell drops a touch to 4 ft from the south-east, with a clean offshore north-west wind. The energy is still moderate (375). This is the pick of the weekend for a lazy session – clean, offshore, and the waves will be manageable. The period is 9 seconds, so it’s a bit of a shorter swell, but still plenty of fun.
Sunday morning sees the swell drop further to 3 ft, still with an offshore wind, but the wind is getting stronger at 25 km/h. The energy drops to 162. The chop from the wind will make it a bit tricky. By Sunday afternoon, the swell is down to 2 ft, and the wind turns cross-offshore. It’s just not doing much.
From Monday morning through to the following Tuesday, it’s a proper flat spell. The swell drops to tiny 0.7 ft to 2 ft, and the energy falls into the weak two-digit range. The winds are offshore, but there’s nothing to ride. It’s a solid gap of about 9 days where it’s not worth paddling out.
The next sniff of action comes on Wednesday 15 July morning. The swell jumps back up to 5 ft from the south, with a period of 10 seconds and strong energy (733). The wind is cross-shore, so it’ll be a bit bumpy, but there’s some power. By the afternoon, the swell pushes 6 ft, but the wind swings onshore, making it choppy and messy. That’s a day for the experts only if they’re desperate.
Thursday 16 July morning is a quieter comeback. The swell is 4 ft from the south with a light cross-offshore wind, giving clean lines. The energy is moderate (287). It’s a solid session, but nothing epic.
The standout in the whole outlook is actually Friday 17 July morning. The swell is 5 ft from the south, with a period of 7 seconds (short period, but it’s there), and the wind is a light cross-offshore from the west, keeping it clean. The energy is moderate (317). This is the best window for a clean, cruiser session with no huge crowds if you get out early. It’s not a big swell, but it’s clean and surfable.
After that, the swell fades out again through the weekend and into the following week. The second week is mostly tiny, weak, and not worth chasing. There’s a couple of flashes of 2 ft with offshore winds, but that’s about it.
So, to sum it up: the best waves are Friday afternoon (10 July) for the glassy 6 ft, and Friday morning (17 July) for the clean 5 ft. The rest is either too small, too windy, or a long wait between sets.
Rusty.
