The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s break this down.
First off, Sunday the 19th is a total dud. Onshore wind and messy surf. The first real chance comes Monday morning, July 20th. We’ve got a 5 ft swell from the east, with an 11-second period, but the wind is glassy – dead calm. That’s going to give you some clean, smooth lines at Bar Beach. The water temp is about 66°F, which is normal for the season. The combined energy is moderate (699), so there’s enough juice to get you moving.
The absolute standout is Monday morning, July 20. That glassy session is the one to set your alarm for. The swell drops a bit in the afternoon and the wind turns cross-on, so it’s all about the morning.
The rest of the week goes small. Tuesday, July 21 morning has a clean 4 ft east swell with a light offshore wind, but it’s weak (319). Surfable, but not a headliner. Wednesday and Thursday are tiny, with waves barely over 2 ft. Not worth the paddle.
We get a bump on Friday, July 24. A new south swell at 6 ft with a 9-second period. The wind goes glassy again in the afternoon, and the energy is moderate (449). That Friday arvo could be clean and fun, though the short period means the waves might be a bit soft.
The next big one is Sunday, July 26. The morning brings a 6 ft south swell, but the period jumps to 12 seconds – that’s proper groundswell. The energy is up to 847 (moderate-strong). The wind is a light cross-shore, so it’s not perfect, but it’s a solid swell. The afternoon pushes to 7 ft with even more energy (1067), but the wind gets cross-on, making it bumpy. That’s expert territory at a beach break.
After that, the surf settles. Tuesday, July 28 morning has a clean 3 ft south swell with a light offshore breeze – a nice, easy option. The end of the month looks messy. Saturday, August 1 morning has a 6 ft south swell (12-second period) with cross-offshore wind, so it’ll be clean. That’s a promising one, but it’s over a week away.
Sunday, August 2 rounds it out with a clean 5 ft south swell and offshore winds all day. The energy is moderate (440). That’s a solid, clean surf day.
The best on offer: Monday morning, July 20 – glassy, clean 5 ft east swell. For a bigger, more powerful wave, keep an eye on Sunday, July 26 morning, or that Saturday, August 1 morning.
Rusty.
