The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s comin’ our way for the next couple of weeks.
To be straight with you, the next 16 days are a real struggle around here. We’ve got a long stretch of flat or near-flat conditions with hardly anything worth paddling out for. The first real glimmer of hope doesn’t show up until Friday morning, the 21st of August, and even then it’s not a standout.
The best of a quiet bunch is going to be Albenga (Albenga), a river mouth break. Friday morning the 21st, we’ll see a clean, glassy session with a 4ft swell from the SW. The period is a short 6 seconds, so it’s a bit weak and disorganised, but the glassy wind will make it feel a lot better than it is. The combined energy is moderate at 156. Water temp is sitting at 83°F, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year.
After that, things get quiet again. Saturday morning the 22nd, there’s a small 3ft SSW swell with a 7-second period, and a clean offshore wind from the NNW. The energy is weak at 58, but for a beginner-friendly spot, it might be worth a look if you’re desperate. The crowds are only sometimes an issue here.
Then there’s a big, flat gap from Sunday the 23rd all the way through to Tuesday the 1st of September. Nothing but tiny dribbles and poor conditions. Finally, on Wednesday afternoon the 2nd of September, we see a pulse of 5ft from the SSW with an 8-second period, pushing moderate energy at 204. The wind is a gentle cross-onshore, so it’ll be a bit choppy, but it’s the most size we’ll see in the whole run. Still, it’s only a marginal surf forecast.
If you’re a beginner, the Friday morning the 21st is your best bet—small, clean, and easy. For anyone else, it’s a pretty grim outlook. The river mouth set-up with a short period won’t be doing anyone any favours, and the long gaps of flat water are frustrating. Keep an eye on the forecasts, but for now, I’d be polishing the board and waiting.
Rusty.
