The Lowdown
Alright, I’m gonna be straight with you: Villa Gesell is really struggling this window. The overall pattern is just a long run of ordinary, poor, or marginal conditions. The first real sniff of surfable waves doesn’t show up until the afternoon of Tuesday the 14th, but it’s tiny and only a 1 out of 10 kind of deal. The gaps are the real story here—big stretches of nothing worth paddling out for.
The water is running about 49° right now, which is pretty average for this time of year at Villa Gesell, nothing weird going on there.
The first days are all small, weak, and mostly cross-off or onshore winds. The combined energy is low, under 100 at first, so not much to work with. The swell is all short-period, coming in from the ESE, which is a poor match for the break’s optimum SSE direction. The sandbar setup is exposed, but it’s not getting any love.
The only real standout in the whole 16 days is the afternoon of Sunday the 26th of July. That afternoon, the wind swings to a moderate offshore from the NNW, and the swell size bumps to 4ft from the ENE, with a combined energy of 303 (moderate). The period is short at 8 seconds, but the offshore wind means clean conditions. For a break that’s consistent and rated for beginners, this is the best you’re going to get. It’s not a huge swell, but it’ll be clean and rideable. The morning of the 27th has a 4ft swell from the east with a longer period of 11 seconds, but it’s a cross-off wind, so not as clean as that Sunday afternoon.
For the rest of the window, you’re looking at persistent onshore or cross-onshore winds, choppy surfaces, and a lot of “poor surf conditions” in the data. The 20th of July kicks up a bit of size but with a strong onshore wind, it’s just messy. The 21st has a bigger 7ft swell from the SSE, but the wind is a strong cross-off, and the period is only 8 seconds, so it’ll be a bumpy, blown-out affair. The 26th afternoon is the only day I’d even bother checking the tide for.
If you’re not a beginner, this setup is more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing on those windy, choppy days. The 20th and 21st have strong winds and a bit of swell, but it’s not clean surf.
So, bottom line: the best on offer is the afternoon of Sunday the 26th of July. Clean, offshore wind, 4ft from the ENE. It’s not a classic, but it’s the only one worth the paddle.
