The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it. This is Rusty, and I’m lookin’ at the forecast for our local stretch of sand.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – this 16-day window looks pretty flat and quiet for the most part. There’s no real swell punch to get excited about, and we’re gonna be waiting a while for anything that even resembles a proper surf. The first few days are a real struggle, with small, weak waves and only a few windows where the conditions are clean enough to bother getting wet.
We start off on Wednesday the 19th and Thursday the 20th with tiny, weak swell from the east, around 1 ft to 1 ft. The wind is offshore or cross-offshore, so the water will be clean, but the energy is so low you’ll be doing more floating than surfing. The combined energy is a measly 48 and 28. It’s a paddling session, not a surf session.
Then things get a bit more interesting but not in a good way. Friday the 21st sees a bump in swell from the SSE, hitting 4 ft, but the wind swings onshore and fresh, blowing 30 km/h. The energy climbs to 189 and 219, but it’s lumpy, choppy, and messy. Not worth your time.
Saturday the 22nd is where we get our first real standout. The morning is still a bit small at 3 ft, but the wind is a clean cross-offshore from the WSW. The real story is the afternoon. The swell jumps to 7 ft from the south with a period of 10 seconds, and the combined energy rockets up to 1481. That’s moderate to strong energy. The wind stays clean, so for a few hours, Villa Gesell is looking like the best bet of the whole forecast. That’s a solid, powerful wave for experienced surfers. It’s a sandbar that’s consistent, so it’ll be holding that size. The swell direction is SSE, which is right in the optimum zone for this spot. Keep in mind, with that size, it’s not for beginners. The water temp is about average for this time of year, nothing unusual.
Sunday the 23rd is a letdown. The swell is still big, 6 ft to 7 ft from the SSE, and the energy is even higher at 1501 and 1624, but the wind is onshore or cross-onshore, making it choppy and poor. The long period of 12 to 14 seconds means it’s a proper groundswell, but the onshore wind just ruins it.
From Monday the 24th onward, it’s a slow fade. The swell drops gradually, and while there’s a few clean mornings with cross-offshore winds, the wave heights are small – 1 ft to 5 ft – and the energy is low. There’s a tiny window on Wednesday the 26th with glassy conditions and 1 ft, but it’s barely surfable. The rest of the run into the first week of September is just small, weak, and clean but flat. The combined energy is consistently under 100 after the 24th. There’s a long gap of poor to non-existent surf from the 27th all the way through to the end of the forecast.
So, to wrap it up: the one truly standout session is Saturday afternoon, August 22nd at Villa Gesell. That’s your window. Get on it if you can handle the size. Everything else is a whole lot of nothing or a choppy mess.
Rusty.
