The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what’s on offer for the 16-day window.
We’re looking at a pretty bleak stretch ahead, to be honest. The first real sniff of any surf isn’t until Thursday the 16th, and even then it’s nothing to get excited about. The water is sitting at 50°F, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least the chill won’t bite quite as hard.
The main break on the radar is Escollera Sur (Mar del Plata). For the first week and a half, it's a real struggle. From the 14th through the 24th of July, the conditions are mostly poor. The swell barely gets above 3ft, with a combined wave energy that mostly sits in the weak to moderate range (50 to 168). The wind is nearly always cross-off, cross, or cross-on, with moderate to fresh breezes, so the surface is never clean for long. A couple mornings on the 16th and 17th manage “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions,” but with a short period of 7-8 seconds and cross-off winds, it's just not worth paddling out for.
There’s a brief flicker on the 26th and 27th of July where the swell bumps up to 4ft to 4ft from the SSE, with a period of 9 seconds and combined energy jumping into the moderate-to-strong range (256 to 306). But the wind is cross-shore from the NE at 16 mph on the 26th, and light on the 27th. The wave comment still calls it “marginal” or “poor.” It’s a tease.
The one true standout comes in the second week, on Tuesday the 28th of July. Tuesday morning brings 3ft swell from the SSE with a very long period of 12 seconds, giving a combined energy of 573 – that’s strong energy. The wind is light and cross-shore from the SSW at 6 mph, which should keep things pretty clean. This is the best the window has to offer, but it’s still rated as “marginal” due to questionable tides. It’s a groundswell with a long period, so at a breakwater/beach setup, it might fatten up a bit or break straight, so don’t expect perfection. But if there’s a time to take a look, it’s that Tuesday morning.
After that, the 29th drops off to 1ft to 2ft again. There are at least 5 days at the start with no real surf recommendations, and then a long stretch of poor conditions before that one moment on the 28th. It’s a tough run, but forecasts can shift. Keep an eye on it.
Rusty.
