The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it. I’m Rusty, and I’ve been watching this forecast for Escollera Sur in Mar del Plata. Honestly, it’s a bit of a slow start, and we’ve got a long wait ahead for anything that gets the blood pumping.
The first week is pretty much a write-off. From Friday the 17th right through to the 23rd, it’s a grim run of poor surf and messy winds. You’ll see a bit of knee-high swell, but it’s coming in short period and most of the time there’s a cross-onshore breeze chopping it up. The water’s sitting at about 50°F, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, but you won’t be feeling it through a wetsuit on those flat days. The combined wave energy is weak, barely cracking 100 to 200 (144 to 299) during the worst of it, and the surf just looks terrible. There’s a brief moment on Tuesday morning the 21st with glassy conditions and a tiny 1ft easterly swell, but it’s barely surfable. You’d be better off staying home.
Now, here’s where it gets interesting. The standout of the whole outlook is Friday morning, the 24th of July. We’ve got a solid 7ft swell rolling in from the SSW, with a period of 10 seconds. That’s a decent groundswell, and the combined wave energy is pumping hard at 1500 – that’s strong energy. The wind is a light cross-offshore from the WSW, leaving the face clean. This is for experienced surfers only, as it’s well over 5ft. It’s likely to be a ripping session, but the trade-off is the crowds are sometimes an issue here, so get there early.
After that, the surf drops off again. Saturday the 25th still has some waist-high waves (5ft) but the wind is up and the quality is marginal. The rest of the month into early August is a mix of tiny, weak swells and clean but small conditions. You’ll see a few glassy moments on the 29th with a 3ft southerly swell, but it’s just ordinary. The combined energy is low (54 to 188) and the periods are short, so don’t expect any power.
For the second week, it’s a long stretch of small, limp surf. If you’re desperate, there’s a chance on the 27th afternoon with a light offshore and clean 2ft waves, but it’s not worth the drive. The outlook is bleak until the 31st of July, where you’ll find a tiny 2ft ENE swell with clean conditions, but it’s barely a ripple.
Bottom line: the only day you should be circling on the calendar is Friday the 24th of July. That’s the one. The rest is a waiting game, but it tends not to stay poor for long around here, so keep an eye on the charts.
Rusty.
