The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming down the pipe for Thirroul.
First up, Saturday the 18th isn’t much to write home about. There’s a small 2ft east swell getting mangled by a cross-onshore breeze, so it’s a write-off. The water’s sitting at 65°, which is pretty normal for this time of year.
Sunday the 19th sees a bit more push – 6ft from the ENE with an 11-second period – but the wind is still cross-onshore, making it messy. The afternoon cleans up a little, but it’s still marginal.
The real standout window opens Monday morning the 20th. That’s the pick of the entire outlook. We’ve got a clean 5ft ENE swell with an 11-second period, light offshore wind from the NW, and the combined energy is running at a solid 713 (moderate). The break is a beach-and-reef setup, exposed to the SE, but with that offshore breeze it’ll hold up nicely. The swell direction is ENE, which is a touch off the optimum SE direction, but the clean conditions more than make up for it. This is a true standout – get out there early. It’s not huge, so it’s fine for intermediates, and crowds are possible, so plan for company.
Tuesday the 21st is smaller at 4ft but still clean in the morning with a cross-offshore breeze. Not a standout, but a fun follow-up.
Wednesday the 22nd drops right off to 3ft – ordinary, even with offshore wind. Not worth the paddle.
Now, Thursday the 23rd brings a pulse of 6ft south swell, but the wind is howling from the SW at 12 mph, turning it into a choppy mess. The combined energy is 494 (moderate), but it’s a lost cause.
Friday morning the 24th is the second standout. We’ve got 6ft south swell with a 10-second period, and the wind is completely glassy. Combined energy is a strong 668 (moderate). That’s a rare, perfect morning window. The swell direction is S, which is a good match for the optimum SE, and with glassy conditions, it’ll be clean and hollow. Expert-friendly at that size – it’s over 5ft, so beginners might struggle. Crowds are likely.
The weekend of the 25th and 26th drops back to 3ft or less, with some light winds but not much juice. The combined energy sinks to 250 and then 134 – weak.
From Monday the 27th right through to the end of the first week of August, it’s a long, flat stretch. We’re talking days of 1ft to 3ft, with poor wind and low energy. The only flicker is Sunday morning August 2nd: a small 4ft east swell with glassy conditions and combined energy of 207 (weak). It’s not a standout, but if you’re desperate, it’s surfable.
Overall, the best of the bunch is Monday morning July 20th for clean, fun waves, with Friday morning July 24th as a close second for the glassy, punchier south swell. The rest is a long gap of flatness from late July into early August. That’s a tough run, but it won’t stay dead forever.
Rusty.
