The Lowdown
Alright, I’ll be honest with you, the pickings are pretty slim across this entire 16-day stretch. Nothing really stands out as a classic day, but there are a few windows where it cleans up enough to get a paddle in.
The first recommendation isn’t until Sunday the 19th, but even then, it’s a marginal call. We’ve got a few days of poor conditions and tiny surf to kick things off. The wait is on.
For Sunday the 19th, the swell builds to a solid 6 ft from the ENE, but it’s coming in with a messy cross-onshore breeze. The period is 11 seconds, which gives it some push, but the wave quality is only just surfable. It’s a beach and reef setup at Thirroul, so it might be more interesting for the kite crew than for paddle surfing on that day.
The real standout, if you can call it that, is Monday morning the 20th. The swell drops a touch to 5 ft from the ENE, but the wind swings around to a light NNW, giving us clean, cross-off conditions. The combined energy is moderate (595), and there’s enough shape there to make it worth the session. That’s your best window. The water is sitting at 64°, which is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
Tuesday the 21st morning is also a gem, with glassy conditions and a 4 ft ENE swell. The energy is a bit lower (374), but those clean, smooth faces will be tempting. The crowds are listed as “sometimes” at Thirroul, so you might have company, but it’s nothing crazy.
After Tuesday, the size drops off and the quality fades. There’s a decent little uptick on Friday the 24th with a 5 ft S swell and clean conditions, but the period is short (8 seconds), so it’ll be a bit lumpy. Then from Saturday the 25th onward, it’s mostly tiny surf and poor conditions through to the end of the window. The last week is a flat spell, with only very small, weak swells on offer.
Bottom line: if you can get out Monday or Tuesday morning, you’ll get the best of a quiet period. After that, it’s a waiting game.
