The Lowdown
G'day, Rusty here. Look, I've gotta be straight with you – the next couple of weeks at Thirroul are a bit of a mixed bag, with a lot of small, average days and a few bigger ones that'll be tricky to get clean. It's a beach and reef setup, and it's exposed to the swell, so it can catch anything going, but it needs the right wind to make it work.
We're starting off this Wednesday the 19th with nothing doing. Tiny 2ft swell from the ESE with a bit of cross-shore wind, it's just poor. Thursday the 20th morning is a little better with a bump to 3ft from the NE, and the wind is clean cross-off, so it's surfable, but it's short period at 6 seconds – not much push. The wave energy is moderate at 134 (in the hundreds). The water temp is 64°, which is about average for this time of year.
Friday the 21st is the best of the early days. The wind goes offshore from the WNW, and it's clean. The swell is 3ft from the NE, with a moderate energy of 120. It's not big, but it'll be clean and fun for a cruise on a log or a fish. The afternoon is even better with the same offshore wind and a touch more energy (120). It's nothing special, but it's the pick of the first week.
The weekend is a write-off. Saturday the 22nd is tiny and glassy in the morning, but the swell is only 2ft. Sunday the 23rd is worse with a cross-shore breeze. Monday the 24th is back to those small, clean 2ft waves, but it's just ordinary.
Now, we get a bit of a pulse mid-week. Tuesday the 25th has a 4ft swell from the NE in the afternoon, with offshore wind and clean conditions. The energy is up to 147 (moderate). It's still small, but it's the best wave of the week so far. Wednesday the 26th sees a bigger swell building from the S, 4ft, but the wind is 25 km/h cross-off, and while it's clean, the energy is jumping to 220 – it's getting a bit lumpy. The surf quality is still marginal.
The standout is Thursday the 27th. This is the one to circle. The swell is 5ft from the S, period is 8 seconds, and the wind is light cross-off from the W, making it clean. The energy is strong at 344 (three-digit). It's the best combo of size and conditions in the outlook. The morning and afternoon both look good. It's a solid, clean, fun-size S swell. This is your day.
After that, it settles back down. Friday the 28th is smaller at 4ft, clean but ordinary. Then Saturday the 29th gets chunky – 8ft to 8ft from the S, with a 9-second period, and the energy is huge (879–1053). But the wind is 25 km/h cross-off, and the surf quality is marginal. It's big, but it's a bit of a washing machine. This is getting into the "experts only" zone, and it's a beach and reef setup, so it might be better for the kite crew than a regular paddle.
Sunday the 30th is a write-off. A full-blown 10ft S swell with 35 km/h cross-onshore wind and energy through the roof (2564–4492). It's a mess. Monday the 31st is still big (8ft) with a 11-second period, but the wind is cross-shore, and it's marginal. The long period from the SSE means it'll be better on the reef than the beach, but the conditions are average.
Tuesday the 1st of September is a nice clean-up. 4ft from the SE, 9-second period, light cross-off wind, and good surf conditions. The energy is moderate at 432. It's a fun, clean day after the chaos. After that, we're back to small, ordinary stuff through the 2nd and 3rd.
So, the long and short of it: Thursday the 27th is your best bet for a proper, clean, fun surf. The Tuesday the 25th afternoon is a solid runner-up. Everything else is either too small, too windy, or too big and messy. Get out there on the 27th, and you'll be smiling.
Rusty.
