The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s cooking at Thirroul.
First up, the water temp is sitting at a pretty normal 65°, dead on for this time of year, so no surprises there.
The next few days are a bit of a mixed bag. Sunday the 19th sees some chest-high swell around 6 ft, pushing in from the ENE with a solid 11-second period. The energy is moderate (869), but the wind is a light cross or cross-on, so it’s going to be a bit lumpy. It’s surfable, but not the best look.
Monday the 20th is a step up. The swell drops a touch to 5 ft, still ENE, but the morning brings a clean, cross-off breeze from the NW. That’s the pick of the early week – clean lines, light winds, and the wave energy is still decent (723). The afternoon gets a bit messy as the wind swings cross-shore, so get on it early.
Tuesday the 21st drops off a little, with 4 ft swell and energy down to 370. The morning is still clean with a light cross-off, but it’s not going to set the world on fire. Wednesday and Thursday fade further, with the swell dropping under 3 ft and the energy falling away. Winds pick up, making it choppy and average. There’s a gap here where it’s pretty ordinary.
Then, late in the first week, things get interesting. On Saturday the 25th, a long-period SSE groundswell arrives, with a 16-second period, pushing 5 ft by the afternoon. The energy jumps to 562, and the wind goes offshore from the W. That’s a promising sign of cleaner, more powerful lines. Sunday the 26th is smaller again, but with clean offshore winds in the morning, it’s a good one for a session.
Now, the real standout is further out. On Tuesday the 28th, we get a proper pulse. The morning is glassy – dead flat calm, wind from the WNW at just 3 mph – and the swell is 6 ft from the SSE with a 17-second period. The energy is huge (2676). That’s a very long-period groundswell, so it’s going to be powerful and clean, but it’s best suited for the point and reef breaks around here, not the beach. The afternoon on the 28th pushes 10 ft, but it gets a bit messy with a cross-shore wind. That morning is for experienced surfers only.
Wednesday the 29th keeps the good run going, with 7 ft in the morning, clean offshore from the WNW, and energy at 1379. That’s another top session for the crew who know what they’re doing. The swell drops a bit after that, but the quality holds through the end of the week.
Looking further ahead into the second week, the first of August sees a big increase again, with 7 ft on Saturday morning, but the wind is moderate and the energy is strong (1025). Sunday the 2nd gets blown out by a strong offshore wind at 25 mph – clean, but hard to paddle into. Then Monday the 3rd is a monster: 8 ft from the SSE with a 13-second period, energy of 2243, and light offshore wind. That’s a serious swell for experts only, and it’s going to be a standout session if the forecast holds.
Overall, the best on offer is the Tuesday the 28th morning glassy session, and the Monday the 3rd morning for the big wave hunters. The mid-week gap is real, but it comes good again.
