Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’m not gonna lie – the next couple of weeks at Thirroul is a proper mixed bag. We’ve got some solid swell windows, but the wind is gonna be our worst enemy most of the time. The vibe is very much “pick your moment” rather than any long, clean runs.
Everything kicks off on Saturday, the 4th of July, but don’t get too excited. Early morning we’ve got a clean 3ft S swell with a 9-second period and a light cross-offshore breeze from the WSW. The combined energy is moderate (184), so there’s a little bit of push there. It’s surfable, but the wind is a bit awkward, so it’s more of a warm-up than a highlight. By afternoon, the wind swings onshore and the wave quality drops right off.
Sunday the 5th sees a big jump in size – 8ft S swell by morning, with a longer 11-second period and strong energy (1651). Sounds great, right? Nope. The wind is a messy 15 mph cross-shore, creating a real chop. This is big, ugly, and for experienced surfers only. It stays poor into the afternoon with rain and onshore wind. Monday and Tuesday are more of the same: solid size (8ft to 8ft) but the wind stays cross or cross-on, keeping things choppy and messy. The combined energy is strong (up to 2073 on Tuesday morning), but the conditions just aren't there.
Wednesday the 8th of July morning is our first real glimmer of hope. We’ve got a 7ft SE swell with a 10-second period. The wind is a gentle cross-shore from the SSW, which is manageable, and the energy is moderate (1024). It’s still a cross-chop on the face, but it’s the most surfable it’s been. The rest of the week leading into the 10th stays similar – solid swell, average wind.
Now, here’s the standout you’ve been waiting for. Saturday the 11th of July morning at Thirroul is the pick of the whole forecast. The swell drops to a clean 5ft from the SE (9-second period) and the wind goes light offshore from the NW at just 3 mph. The combined energy is moderate (359), but it’s that glassy, clean surface that makes a beach-reef setup like this come alive. It’s not a massive day, but it’s quality. Watch out for crowds though – this spot gets busy when the conditions line up this well. After that, Sunday the 12th is tiny with a 2ft long-period ESE groundswell (12 seconds). That’s a proper groundswell, which can break a bit straight out here, but the afternoon gets clean offshore wind (NW) – a fun little board-changer session for the dedicated.
The second week goes quiet for a bit. Monday the 13th is flat (1.0ft), and Tuesday the 14th morning sees a clean 6ft S swell with offshore wind (WSW) that could be worth a paddle if you’re desperate. But then it drops off again. By Thursday the 16th, it’s small onshore slop and not worth getting wet. The last real call is Sunday the 19th of July morning – a tiny 3ft E swell, short period (6 seconds), and light SSW wind. The combined energy is weak (98). Honestly, if you want a surf, your best bet is that Saturday the 11th morning session. Everything else is a battle with the wind for very average returns.
Rusty.
