The Lowdown
G'day, Rusty here. Look, I've been staring at the charts for our patch, and it's a bit of a mixed bag. We've got a decent run of swell coming, but the winds are going to make you work for it. The first few days are a write-off, but there's a couple of windows that'll get the blood pumping.
We're starting with a bit of a wait. The first real chance to get wet doesn't come until Wednesday the 19th, but it's a tease. Thirroul is a beach and reef setup, and it's exposed to the south swell. The water temp is sitting at 64°, which is about average for this time of year.
That first window on Sunday morning, the 19th, is a bit of a let-down. There's a 6ft swell from the ENE, but the wind is cross-on at 6 mph from the SE, making it a bit messier than it should be. The energy is moderate (640), but the vibe is marginal.
The real standout is the Monday morning, the 20th of July. The wind swings around to a light NNW at 6 mph, giving us a clean cross-offshore breeze. The swell is a solid 5ft from the ENE, with a period of 10 seconds, which is a nice groundswell. The energy is moderate (558), and the notes say "expect very good surf conditions". This is your best bet for the week. The conditions will be clean and the waves will have some shape. It's a beach and reef, so it'll work well.
The next morning, Tuesday the 21st, is also looking good. We've got a similar clean cross-offshore wind from the NNW at 6 mph, with a 4ft ENE swell. The energy is a bit lower (354), but the conditions are clean. The note says "expect good surf conditions", so it's a solid option if you missed Monday.
After that, the surf drops off for a bit, with small, poor waves through the rest of the week. But then, keep your eye on Sunday, the 26th of July. The swell jumps back up to 8ft from the S, with a period of 10 seconds. The energy is strong (1999), but the wind is a light cross-on from the S at 6 mph. It's a bit of a "marginal" call, so it's one for the experts.
Then, the real gem of the whole outlook might be Monday morning, the 27th of July. The wind goes dead calm, glassy as, with a 5ft S swell pumping in at 12 seconds – that's a very long period groundswell. The energy is a solid 796. The notes say "expect very good surf conditions". This is a potential epic session, but being a long period S swell at a beach break, it might be a bit straight and fat. Best on the low tide bank.
So, to wrap it up:
- Best on offer: Monday morning, 20th July – clean, solid 5ft ENE swell, perfect conditions.
- Second best: Tuesday morning, 21st July – similar clean conditions, just a bit smaller.
- Long-range promise: Monday morning, 27th July – glassy, long period S swell, could be a ripper.
The rest of the days are either blown out, too small, or just average. Get on it while you can.
Rusty.
