Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for Thirroul over the next couple of weeks. Gotta be straight with you, it’s a bit of a slow start and there are some real gaps where the ocean just doesn’t have much to offer.
The first real chance to get wet doesn’t come until next week. We’ve got Wednesday, July 9th with a 5ft SSE swell rolling in. It’s not pretty though, with a cross-shore wind and a chop on it, and the wave energy is modest (727). Definitely a day for the keen, not the picky.
The standout window kicks off on Thursday, July 10th (Friday morning). The swell drops a touch to 5ft from the SE, but the wind goes completely glassy. That’s a huge score. The water temp is sitting at 65°, which is bang on average for this time of year. The wave energy is still moderate (358), but glassy conditions will make the most of what’s there. This is the best looking session of the whole outlook.
Saturday, July 12th (Saturday morning) follows up nicely. It’s smaller, around 4ft, still from the SE, but we get clean offshore winds from the NW. Wave energy is moderate (306). It’ll be clean and rideable, and the river mouth setup at Thirroul (Illawarra) should handle that SE direction well.
After that, things go flat as a tack. From Sunday, July 13th, right through to Thursday, July 17th, there’s a real drought. We’re talking days of tiny waves below 2ft and barely any energy (values between 16 and 113). A few mornings have offshore winds, but the ocean just isn't delivering. You’ll be staring at a lake. This kind of flat run is par for the course for the area.
We do see a small pulse returning around Friday, July 18th into Saturday, July 19th, with the swell bumping back to 4ft from the S, but it’s a short period windswell (5 seconds) with moderate energy (79). Not exactly going to set the world on fire, but it might get a few closeouts.
Sunday, July 20th (Saturday morning) brings another small uptick: a 3ft SE swell with light offshore winds and clean conditions. It’s tiny, but with a 9-second period and moderate energy (140), it’s something to keep an eye on if you’re desperate. The Monday, July 21st morning is another glassy one, but the swell is only 1ft – barely a ripple.
Bottom line: The best window is Friday, July 11th (Thursday night/Friday morning) for clean, glassy 5ft SE swell. Saturday, July 12th is the next best with clean offshore wind. After that, it’s a long wait until the end of the second week for any glimmer of hope.
Stay patient, and keep your eye on the forecasts.
Rusty.
