The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. I’ll be straight with you – the next 16 days for Thirroul are a bit of a mixed bag with a lot of waiting around. There’s nothing worth getting excited about right now, but there’s a promising window further out.
We kick off Friday the 17th with a bit of rain and a light 3ft south swell. Problem is, it’s cross-shore wind and the combined energy is weak (88). The water’s sitting at 64°, which is about average for this time of year, so nothing strange here. This is pretty ordinary stuff. Saturday the 18th is even smaller, with a 2ft swell in the morning, and the energy is still weak (125). You’re better off staying home.
We hit a bit of a lull through the middle of the week. Sunday the 19th sees a pulse of 6ft from the ENE, with a decent period of 11 seconds and strong energy (786). The wind is light cross-shore, but it’s still marginal. Monday the 20th morning is where it gets a little interesting – a clean 5ft ENE swell (542 energy) with a light cross-offshore breeze from the NNW. That’s actually surfable, but it’s not a standout. Tuesday the 21st morning is glassy with a 4ft ENE swell (337 energy). That’s clean, but the swell is a bit weak. The rest of the week drops off again, with small 3ft to 5ft waves and poor conditions.
Now, here’s the one that’s got my attention. By Wednesday the 29th of July, we’ve got a solid 6ft S swell rolling in (770 energy), and the wind is cross-offshore from the NW. That’s proper. The afternoon of the 29th polishes up even more – 6ft from the SSE, 11-second period (799 energy), and a clean offshore from the NW. This is the best on offer. The swell direction is a bit off the optimal SE for Thirroul’s exposed setup, but with that offshore wind and good energy, it’ll be well-shaped and clean. It’s still a beach and reef setup, so keep an eye on the tide.
Thursday the 30th morning holds up with 5ft from the S (673 energy) and clean conditions. Then Friday the 31st morning brings a big jump – 8ft S swell with a massive 2419 energy. That’s powerful, but it’s borderline for experts only. The wind is cross-offshore, so it’s clean, but 8ft is serious. After that, it fades quickly into the first of August with smaller, cleaner but ordinary surf.
The standout is definitely the afternoon of the 29th of July. That’s the one to circle. Crowds can be a factor at Thirroul sometimes, so get there early if you can. The long-range call for the 31st is promising but less certain – that big swell could be wild.
Rusty.
