Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ll be straight with you—this 16-day outlook for Thirroul is a bit of a mixed bag. We’ve got a solid start with some proper size, but then it drops off a cliff and stays small for a long stretch. The good news is there are a couple of windows where it all lines up, so let’s get into it.
We kick off Wednesday, July 8, with a chunky 8ft swell from the southeast, pushing through a hefty 1481 combined energy. The wind is a cross-shore from the south-southwest at 12 mph, which leaves it a bit messy and marginal. Afternoon holds similar size at 8ft, but the energy jumps to 2271—there’s plenty of grunt—but the cross-shore wind keeps it from being clean. This is serious swell, over 8ft in the morning, so it’s really only for experienced surfers. The 10-second period suggests it’s a groundswell, which at a beach and reef setup like Thirroul can be a bit straight and tricky.
Thursday, July 9, drops to 5ft with a SE swell, energy down to 721 in the morning and 562 in the afternoon. Wind is cross-shore and then cross-on, so it’s still not great. The forecast says marginal, and I’d agree—wait for a better window.
Now, Friday, July 10, is the standout. Early morning we get 5ft of southeast swell with 325 energy, and the wind is glassy—dead calm, WSW at 3 mph. That’s about as clean as it gets. The 9-second period is a bit short, but with glassy conditions, Thirroul will be offering up some fun, manageable waves. This is the best on offer in the first week. Beginners can handle this size, and the clean faces will make it a good session. Afternoon sees a light cross-on, so get in early.
Saturday, July 11, holds some promise too. Morning has 4ft from the SE with 294 energy, and the wind is offshore from the northwest at 6 mph—clean. Period is still 9 seconds, so it’s a bit short, but clean offshore wind makes up for it. Afternoon drops to 2ft with an ESE swell and a longer 11-second period, and the wind stays offshore. Small, but clean and glassy sets.
Then we hit the wall. From Sunday, July 12, through to the end of the outlook, the swell drops below 3ft, and the energy readings fall into the double digits and low triple digits. From Sunday morning to Tuesday, July 14, the waves are 2ft or smaller. The water temp is about average for the time of year, nothing unusual. The wind is offshore or cross-off, but there’s just not enough swell to surf. The energy is weak (39 to 24), and the period is short. This is a quiet stretch.
Wednesday, July 15, afternoon sees a spike to 4ft from the south with 310 energy, but it’s cross-shore wind at 16 mph under light rain—messy, and the score says poor. Not worth paddling out.
Thursday, July 16, brings a bigger pulse of 6ft from the south with 815 energy, but the wind is a strong 25 mph cross-on with rain showers. That’s a washing machine, and the surf quality is poor. This is more for kite surfers than paddle surfers.
The rest of the run from July 17 to July 23 is all small, weak swell, generally under 3ft, with energy under 400 and mostly poor conditions. There are a few moments on the 20th, 21st, and 22nd where the wind is clean or glassy, but the swell is only 1ft to 2ft with energy as low as 88. Surfable, but you’ll be scratching for a wave.
Overall, the best bet is Friday, July 10, morning. Get on it early for 5ft, glassy, and clean. Saturday, July 11, morning is a solid backup. After that, you’re looking at a long gap of small surf until the end of the forecast. The second week is all tiny and uncertain.
Rusty.
