Table - best surf conditions forecast for Thirroul over the next 16 days.
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the menu for the coming weeks.
First up, the water temp is sitting about average for this time of year, nothing out of the ordinary there. The south-east swell direction at Thirroul is right on the money for this spot, which is a good sign.
We’ve got a bit of a slow start, but things get going properly on Friday morning, 11 July. That Saturday morning, July 11th, is where the real highlight sits. The swell is a nice 4ft from the south-east, running on a 9-second period, and we’ve got a clean offshore breeze from the north-west. The combined swell energy is sitting at 328, which is a good, punchy feel for the beach and reef setup here. It’s not too big for most surfers and the conditions should be tidy. That afternoon holds a clean 3ft from the east-south-east with a longer 11-second period and light cross-off wind – good for a longer session if you want a change of pace. Crowds can be a bit of a thing here sometimes, so get in early.
Friday afternoon, July 10th, also looks tidy – 5ft south-east swell with a glassy surface, which is hard to beat. The combined swell energy for that afternoon is 474, so plenty of push, but the wind is dead calm. That’s a solid call for a late arvo paddle.
The rest of the first week is pretty ordinary. We get a few small clean mornings on Sunday and Monday (July 12 and 13), but the swell drops right away – down to 2ft or less. Not really worth getting wet for unless you’re on a log.
The second week gets a bit ugly. By Wednesday afternoon, July 15, the swell jumps to 8ft from the south, but with a nasty 25 mph cross-shore wind and energy reading of 1642 – that’s a washing machine. Thursday 16th is even bigger at 10ft and 34 mph winds. That’s expert-only territory, and even then, it’s gonna be a mess. Honestly, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than a proper paddle.
Things start to clean up again late in the run. Sunday morning, July 19, brings a clean 4ft south swell with a light cross-off breeze and combined energy of 243 – not huge, but workable and clean. Then Monday afternoon, July 20, looks promising too: 3ft south swell, 12-second period, clean conditions, and combined energy of 268. That’s a long-period groundswell, which at a beach and reef setup like Thirroul can be a bit straight, but still better than what we’ve had in between.
The last few days taper off to almost nothing, with just tiny 1.0ft or 0.7ft waves for the remainder. A couple of glassy mornings on July 23 and 24, but really just flat.
So, the standout window: Saturday morning July 11. Don’t sleep on Friday arvo July 10 either if you like clean conditions with a bit more size.
Rusty.
