Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s shaping up for Thirroul over the next couple of weeks.
Right now, there’s nothing doing. The opening days of the forecast are messy and not worth paddling out for. We’ve got a big, strong swell rolling in on Tuesday the 7th of July – around 10ft to 12ft from the SSE – but it’s coming with a cross-shore wind and a fair bit of chop. The combined energy is heavy, around 3694 to 4750, but the conditions are marginal and the tide’s working against it. That sort of size with that wind just isn’t fun, and it stays pretty ordinary through Wednesday and Thursday. The swell drops a bit by Thursday afternoon to 5ft from the SE, but the wind is swinging cross-onshore and the quality is poor.
Friday the 10th of July is where things start to turn. The morning is still a bit sleepy at 5ft, but by the afternoon the wind goes glassy and the swell holds at 5ft from the SE (period 10 seconds). That’s clean, lined-up conditions for an evening session. Nothing massive, but glassy surf at 5ft is about as good as it gets for a relaxed paddle.
Saturday the 11th of July is the standout of the first week. We’ve got offshore wind from the WNW – 6 to 12 mph – and the swell is a modest 3ft to 4ft from the SE (9 seconds). The energy is light at 235, but with clean offshore conditions and small waves, it’s a perfect day for a longboard or a funboard. Crowds can pop up here sometimes, so get in early for the best of it.
Sunday the 12th drops right off to 2ft to 2ft, and while the wind stays offshore, it’s really small and ordinary. The energy is down to 100–159. Not worth a special trip.
From Monday the 13th through to Thursday the 16th, it’s mostly small and messy, with the swell fluctuating between 0.7ft and 4ft. A few windows pop up – like Tuesday the 14th afternoon with a 3ft swell from the S (11 seconds) and offshore wind – but it’s marginal. Wednesday the 15th morning has a clean 4ft from the S (10 seconds) with a gentle offshore, but the afternoon turns cross-onshore and choppy.
Now, here’s the big one. Look a week ahead to Tuesday the 21st of July. That morning, a massive 15ft swell from the SSE (12 seconds) arrives with combined energy of 5155 and a gentle cross-offshore wind from the SW. This is exceptional surf, but it’s for expert surfers only – anything over 8ft is serious business. The period is long, so it’s a groundswell, and on a beach-and-reef setup like Thirroul, those long-period waves can break straight and be tricky. It’s a powerful, clean morning for those who know what they’re doing. The afternoon messes up a bit with a cross-onshore. Then Wednesday the 22nd of July morning sees a glassy 12ft from the S (10 seconds) with energy around 3953 – still big, but glassy conditions make it excellent for experienced surfers. That Tuesday morning is the true standout for the whole forecast, but it’s a long-range call so keep an eye on it.
All up, the best of the surf this period is Saturday the 11th for clean small waves, and Tuesday the 21st for a big, expert-level session. There’s a long gap of poor to non-existent surf from the 13th to the 19th, so don’t hold your breath in between.
Stay salty,
Rusty
