The Lowdown
Alright, folks. Rusty here with the lowdown for the next sixteen days at Thirroul. It’s a slow start, so don’t bother waxing up just yet. The first real surf worth paddling for doesn’t show until Sunday morning, August 23rd, so you’ve got a few days of flat or tiny dribble to sit through.
The water temp is 65°, which is right on the money for this time of year. Nothing special.
Let’s get into it. Sunday morning, August 23rd, we see a little pulse of life. A south swell pushing 3 feet at 10 seconds, with clean glassy conditions. The combined energy is moderate, around 150, and while the size is small, it’s surfable. Monday the 24th keeps that energy rolling with a similar south swell, 3 feet, and clean cross-off winds in the morning. It’s not going to blow your mind, but it’s a start.
The standout window is Wednesday, August 26th. That morning, a south swell builds to 7 feet with a period of 8 seconds. The energy jumps to a strong 727, and we’ve got clean cross-off winds. This is proper size for Thirroul. For the experienced crew, this is your call. The afternoon sees the swell hold at 7 feet, but the energy cranks right up to a very strong 1171. The wind picks up to a moderate cross-off, so it’ll be a bit wild, but still clean. Nothing for beginners here – 7 feet is past the comfort zone for learners.
The next morning, Thursday the 27th, the swell backs off to 3 feet, but the energy is still moderate at 162. It’s a drop-off, but still a fun little leftover.
After that, the surf gets messy and inconsistent. Saturday, August 29th, has a 6-foot north-east swell in the morning, but the wind is a moderate cross-off. The energy is moderate at 399. It’s a bit of a novelty, but the quality is ordinary. The following week is a real mixed bag of tiny, choppy, or onshore conditions. There’s a brief moment on September 1st with a glassy 3 feet, but it’s small and weak. The long-range looks poor overall, with only a few marginal windows.
If you’re waiting for the best, point your board at Wednesday, August 26th. That south swell, with clean wind and serious energy, is the pick of the whole period. The rest of the week is a waiting game. Keep your eyes on the forecast, though – the consistency here is fairly decent, so it won’t stay this quiet forever.
Rusty.
