Alright, surfers, Rusty here. Let's get into it. We're looking at a real mixed bag for Thirroul over the next couple of weeks. The week ahead is pretty grim, but there’s some real firepower on the horizon for the patient ones.
Right now, we're in a flat spell. The water temp is about average for the time of year, so nothing unusual there to start. Friday the 3rd is a write-off with tiny, weak swell and moderate to fresh offshore winds. Nothing doing. Things stay dead through the weekend with hardly any energy.
We finally see a pulse of life on Saturday the 4th. A 3ft groundswell from the south, with a nice 12-second period, pushes in. It’s not huge, but the combined wave energy hits 234 (moderate), and the morning has light cross-offshore winds from the WSW. That’s the standout of the first week. It’s a small window, but for a beach and reef setup, it'll be clean and fun for a few hours. The swell direction is a good match for the spot, so get on it early. Crowds are possible so don't sleep in.
Sunday the 5th through Monday the 6th is a no-go. We get a big jump in swell height up to 8ft, but it's accompanied by strong onshore winds creating lumpy, choppy conditions. The energy jumps way up (1300 to 1762), but it's all blown out. Not worth it.
Tuesday the 7th and Wednesday the 8th are a step in the right direction but still marginal. We're looking at a solid 7ft to 8ft south-east swell with moderate wave energy (993 to 1523), but the wind is cross-shore, keeping a bit of a mess on the surface. It’s surfable for the experienced crew who don't mind a challenge, but it's not clean.
Then, a clean sweep. Thursday the 9th is the turning point. The swell is still a solid 6ft from the SE with moderate energy (649), but the wind goes glassy. That’s right, dead calm. The morning is like a sheet of glass. That is a rare treat. For an exposed beach and reef, when it’s glassy like that, every wave is rideable. That Thursday morning and afternoon are the absolute best on offer for clean, user-friendly waves this week. The swell period is a solid 10 seconds, so there’s some push behind it.
Friday the 10th morning is still good with clean, 4ft waves and light offshore winds, but it begins to drop off in the arvo. From Saturday the 11th, we go back into a flat, weak spell that lasts all the way through Monday the 13th.
Now, looking into the second week, we’ve got some heavy hitters. On Tuesday the 14th, a new 8ft south swell arrives with a 10-second period and excellent 1191 combined energy. The kicker? The morning has a gentle offshore wind. This is expert-level stuff – it’s big and powerful. The offshore will make for some steep, hollow walls. A real standout for the big wave crew.
After a small drop-off on Wednesday the 15th, we get a second major run. On Thursday the 16th, a 10ft south swell builds. Conditions are cross-shore, so it’s still a bit lumpy, but it’s there. Then, Friday the 17th morning looks absolutely epic. A 10ft southerly groundswell with a long 11-second period and glassy conditions. The energy value is a massive 2166. This is serious, heavy water. Only for experts. It’s a promising long-range call, but the size and perfect wind combo mean it’s the one to circle on the calendar.
Finally, Saturday the 18th morning delivers another glassy, 8ft east-south-east groundswell with a very long 12-second period and a staggering 2089 energy reading. Another absolute bombshell for the experienced surfers. For a beach and reef break like Thirroul, a long-period swell from the ESE will push a lot of water, but with those glassy conditions, the shape will be world-class.
Stay with it, folks. The wait will be worth it.
Rusty.
