The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ll be straight with you – the next few days at Thirroul are a bit of a write-off. We’ve got a real flat spell to kick things off, so don’t even bother paddling out until the weekend after next. The wait will be worth it.
The first real chance you’ll get is on Sunday, July 19th. The surf is marginal, with a 6ft swell from the ENE, but the cross-onshore wind has it looking a bit average. The combined energy is moderate (567). It’s nothing to write home about.
Monday, July 20th is where it starts to get interesting. The morning is your best bet for the whole week. We’ve got a clean 5ft ENE swell with a proper cross-offshore breeze from the NNW, and the wave energy is moderate (567). The water temp is about 64°, which is pretty normal for the time of year. This is a solid window for intermediate surfers. Crowds can turn up here sometimes, so get in early.
By Tuesday, July 21st, the mornings are still clean with a drop to 4ft ENE, but the energy is a bit lower (363). It’s still surfable, just not as punchy.
Wednesday, July 22nd morning is a standout for the glassy conditions – a 4ft ENE swell with glassy wind from the SW. That’s the kind of morning you dream about, even if the swell is small. The period is 10 seconds, so it’s a proper groundswell that will wrap in nicely. Energy is moderate (248).
After that, we hit a big gap. From Thursday, July 23rd right through to Monday, July 27th, the surf is tiny and weak. The swell drops below 3ft, and the wind is all over the place. Not worth the paddle.
Then, on Tuesday, July 28th, the ocean wakes up. We’ve got a 8ft S swell with a period of 9 seconds, and the combined energy is strong at 1462. That’s a lot of water moving. Problem is, the wind is cross-shore, so it’s going to be a messy, choppy mess. This one’s for the experts only – too big and too ugly for most.
The real gem in this whole stretch is Wednesday, July 29th. The swell drops to 7ft from the S, still a bit hefty, but the wind is light and cross-shore, with a moderate energy reading of 1002. The period is short at 8 seconds, so it’ll be a bit crumbly, but there’s plenty of power. This is a big-swell day for the experienced crew.
And finally, Thursday, July 30th. That’s the one. The morning shows a 5ft SSE swell with a very good 11-second period, and a clean offshore wind from the W. The energy is strong at 611. This is the best-looking day of the whole outlook. The swell direction is a bit south of the optimum, but clean conditions and a proper groundswell make it a winner. Get on it.
Rusty.
