The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what Thirroul has got cookin' for us over the next couple of weeks. It's a mixed bag, but there are definitely a few windows where you'll want to be in the water.
First up, the water temp is sitting at 64°, which is pretty much bang on average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
We've got a bit of a slow start. Saturday the 22nd is flat as a tack with only 1ft of weak, short-period NE windswell and an onshore breeze. Not worth paddling out for.
Sunday the 23rd morning is where we get our first real look. A clean 4ft south swell pushing through with a light cross-offshore northerly. The energy is moderate (215), and it's a south swell hitting an exposed beach and reef. It's a bit on the small side, but it'll be clean and should offer a few fun ones for the intermediate crew. It gets a bit of a look-in. Sunday afternoon goes ugly with a strong cross-shore wind.
Monday the 24th morning is surfable but ordinary. Clean lines, but the swell has dropped to 2ft. Not really a standout.
The middle of the week is pretty average. We've got a bit of a bump on Tuesday morning, but it's short-period ENE windswell with weak energy. Wednesday is a write-off with strong winds and messy surf.
Now, let's talk about the real standout. Thursday the 27th morning. It's not big, with 4ft of south swell, but the magic is in the conditions. It's dead glassy. That's right, glassy. A light southerly breeze with the swell period at 8 seconds. The energy is solid at 253. This will be the cleanest, most user-friendly session of the week. The beach and reef setup at Thirroul will handle this nicely. If you've got a window, this is the one.
Friday the 28th morning is another good option. A clean 3ft south swell with a light cross-offshore WSW wind. The energy is still decent at 223. It won't be as good as Thursday, but it's a solid backup.
Looking into the second week, things get a bit more interesting. Saturday the 5th of September morning is one to circle on the calendar. We've got a very long-period, 21-second south swell pumping in. The energy is very strong at 512. Now, with a period that long, it's a true groundswell. It'll have heaps of push and shape, but at a beach and reef like Thirroul, it might wall up a bit straight. The kicker is it's glassy again, with a light northerly breeze. This is a promising, long-range standout. Keep an eye on it.
Sunday the 6th of September morning sees the swell size bump up to 5ft, but the period drops back to 8 seconds and the wind goes cross-shore. It looks a bit messy.
So, to sum it up: the best of the best is Thursday the 27th morning for those perfect, glassy conditions on a clean south swell. The second standout is that long-period pulse on Saturday the 5th of September morning, which could be something special if the conditions hold.
Rusty.
