The Lowdown
Alright, mate, grab a coffee. Rusty here, and I’m looking at Thirroul for the next couple weeks. It’s a mixed bag – some crisp windows, but you’ve gotta pick your moments. Water temp is about 64.8°, right on the average for this time of year.
We start Sunday the 19th. Not much – a bumpy 5.6ft ENE swell at 11 seconds, cross-on wind from the south at 6 mph. Energy’s moderate (869), but the wind’s trashing it. Skip it. Monday morning the 20th though – that’s the standout. Clear skies, a light cross-off breeze from the NW at 6 mph, and a solid 5.2ft ENE groundswell at 11 seconds. Energy’s still decent (723), and the waves will be clean and lined up. This is your best session of the whole outlook. The beach-and-reef setup handles that east swell alright, even though the ideal direction is SE. Crowds can show up sometimes, but Monday morning should be quieter. Afternoon turns cross-shore and chop, so get in early.
Tuesday the 21st has a smaller 4.3ft ENE swell, still clean in the morning with a light NNW cross-off at 6 mph. Worth a look if you want something mellower. Wednesday the 22nd drops to 3.3ft in the morning, but the wind goes offshore from the west at 6 mph, so it’s clean. The afternoon goes glassy with a tiny 3.0ft – surfable but ordinary. Thursday the 23rd is a write-off in the morning with only 2.3ft, but the afternoon sees a new S swell push in at 3.9ft, 8-second period, with a clean cross-off. Not great shape, but something to paddle.
Friday the 24th morning brings a better 4.6ft S swell at 8 seconds, offshore wind from the WNW at 6 mph, and clean lines. Energy’s moderate (271). It’s a decent session. Saturday the 25th is smaller and cross-shore, not worth the effort.
Now, Sunday the 26th – that’s a big one. The morning shows a 8.2ft S swell at 12 seconds, with a massive energy of 2785. That’s strong stuff. Wind is light cross from the south at 3 mph, so it’s not glassy, but for experienced surfers this could be a thrash. The beach break might get a bit straight with that long period (12 sec), but the reef sections could handle it. Afternoon drops to 6.9ft with onshore wind – messy. If you’re an expert, the morning might be your go, but it’s only for those who know what they’re doing.
Monday the 27th settles to 3.9ft SSE, clean cross-off, and a bit of energy (287). A decent follow-up session. Tuesday the 28th gets smaller and weaker, and from Wednesday the 29th onward it’s mostly tiny, with a few days of poor conditions. The end of the first week of August shows a glimmer: Sunday the 2nd has a glassy 4.3ft
