The Lowdown

G’day, Rusty here. Look, it’s a bit of a slow start, but there’s some proper surf sneaking in this week at Thirroul. The real standout is a ripper of a session on Monday morning, July 20, and then a long-range gem that’s worth keeping an eye on for the first Saturday of August.

We kick off Monday morning, July 20, with a clean 5 ft swell from the ENE, and a solid 11-second period. The wind’s a light 6 mph cross-off from the NW, so the face is gonna be smooth. The water’s sitting at 65 °F, which is a touch warmer than usual for this time of year. The combined energy is moderate (723). It’s the best of the near-term, no doubt.

The rest of the week is a bit of a mixed bag. Tuesday morning, July 21, drops to 4 ft ENE with a 10-second period, and a light NW cross-off again, keeping it clean. Wednesday morning, July 22, has a 3 ft ENE swell with a 10-second period, and a proper offshore wind from the W at 6 mph. That’s clean, but small. Still, a couple of glassy mornings in there.

We hit a flat spell from Thursday, July 23, through to Friday morning, July 24. The swell drops right off, with tiny 2 ft leftovers and poor conditions. Not worth paddling for.

Then Friday afternoon, July 24, throws a curveball. The swell dirties up to just 1 ft, but the period is a massive 18 seconds from the SSE. That’s a very long period groundswell, and at a beach-and-reef setup like Thirroul, it might break a bit too straight and close out. The wind is clean offshore though, so if you’re a regular on a longboard, you might find a sneaky one.

Saturday, July 25, and Sunday, July 26, are messy. The swell picks up a bit, but the wind is cross or onshore, and the quality is poor. The Sunday afternoon sees a 5 ft S swell with onshore wind, so it’s a write-off.

Now, we get a proper run of quality from Monday, July 27, through Tuesday, July 28. Monday morning is glassy, with a 4 ft SSE swell, 10-second period, and zero wind. That’s a dream. Tuesday has a moderate offshore wind, keeping the 3 ft to 2 ft S swell clean. These are good, small windows.

The end of the week turns windy and messy again. Wednesday, July 29, through to Friday, July 31, is a write-off for paddle surfing. The wind is strong and cross, and the swell is inconsistent. The setup here looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing, especially when the wind’s up.

But the real standout is Saturday morning, August 1. Glassy. A 6 ft SSE swell with a 12-second period, and zero wind. The combined energy is strong (876). That’s a solid, clean groundswell. It’s a week away, so it’s promising but not locked in yet. Keep it on your radar.

After that, Sunday, August 2, and Monday, August 3, are back to poor conditions with cross-shore wind and dropping swell. Tuesday, August 4, has a 5 ft S swell, but the wind is light cross-on, so it’s a bit bumpy.

So, the best on offer is Monday morning, July 20, and Saturday morning, August 1. If you’re keen, get out there for the glass.

Rusty.
