The Lowdown

G’day, it’s Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks down at Thirroul. To be honest, it’s a bit of a slow burner. The surf is going to be pretty ordinary for a good stretch before we finally see some real size push in, but you’ll have to pick your moments. The water’s sitting at 64°, which is about normal for this time of year, so nothing crazy there.

The first few days are a write-off, to be honest. Wednesday the 19th is flat and messy, with a light cross-shore wind and weak energy (192). Nothing doing. Thursday the 20th is more of the same, with tiny waves and confused directions. There’s a slight bump Friday the 21st morning, but it’s barely worth the walk. The swell energy is weak (59) and the waves are just ordinary. We’ve got a stretch here with no real standouts. Saturday the 22nd and Sunday the 23rd are pretty much a dead loss, with minimal swell and onshores kicking up on Sunday arvo. You’d be better off doing something else.

We finally get a little pulse on Tuesday the 25th. The morning looks glassy with light rain and a 4ft swell from the NE with a period of 7 seconds. The energy is moderate (173). It’s surfable, but it’s still pretty average. That afternoon the wind swings and chops it up. Not the day to get excited about.

Now, here’s where things start to get interesting. The big change comes in on Thursday the 27th. The swell jumps to 8ft from the SSE with a 10-second period, and the energy reading is strong (1339). This is a proper pulse of swell, but it comes with a catch. The morning wind is light cross-shore, leaving it a bit lumpy. The afternoon looks poor with an onshore breeze. This is definitely big enough that it’s pushing into more expert territory—it’s well over the 8ft mark, so it’s not one for the beginners.

Friday the 28th is the standout of this run. The morning is looking the best we’ve seen. We’ve got a 5ft swell from the SSE with a 9-second period, but the wind is a moderate offshore from the west, and that’s going to groom the face. The energy is moderate (333). It’s not huge, but it’s clean and has some push. Thirroul is a beach and reef setup, and with that offshore flow, the lines should be holding up well. This is your window if you want a proper surf.

After that, it gets messy again. Saturday the 29th sees the swell bump up to 10ft on the afternoon, but with a fresh cross-onshore wind, it’s going to be a washing machine. That’s more of a kite-surfing day than a paddle-surfing day. The energy is very strong (1479), but the quality is poor. Sunday the 30th is similar—big, but cross-shore winds and lumpy conditions ruin it. This stretch is for the experienced crew only, and even they might be scratching their heads.

The beginning of September sees things ease off again. Monday the 1st has a 5ft swell from the SE with a long 12-second period. That longer period means better shape, but it can also make beach breaks close out. The winds are light but onshore-ish, so it’s not ideal. Energy is moderate to strong (733). It’s there, but it’s not going to be clean.

The rest of the second week trails off into small, weak surf. There’s not much to get excited about—just small waves and onshore breezes. It looks like the run ends with a whimper.

So, to sum it up: don’t bother with the first week. The real highlight is Friday the 28th morning. That’s the one to circle on the calendar. It’s clean, it has some size, and the wind is right. The big swell around the 29th and 30th has power, but it’s too messy to be any fun unless you’re towing in or flying a kite.

This is a long-range call, so don’t hold me to it too tight, but as it stands, that Friday is your best bet. Keep an eye on the forecasts, and I’ll see you in the water.

Rusty.
