Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
G’day, I’m Rusty. Let’s talk about what’s shaping up for Thirroul over the next couple of weeks. The start is a bit rough, nothing to get too excited about, but there are a couple of windows where it’ll clean up real nice.
The surf starts Monday, 6 July, but it’s ordinary. You got a solid 8ft swell from the SSE, with a 10-second period, but that south wind at 16 mph is blowing cross-on, making everything choppy and messy. The combined wave energy is 1321 (moderate), but it don’t help. Water temp is 65°, which is pretty normal for this time of year.
Tuesday the 7th, the swell picks up – morning 10ft from the SSE, afternoon 12ft from the SE with the period stretching to 11 seconds. The energy jumps right up (3694 to 4750, strong). But it’s still cross-shore wind, and it’s marginal with a cross-chop. That’s too big for beginners, and even for the crew, it’s lumpy.
Wednesday and Thursday keep the 8ft to 7ft swell going, but the wind stays cross or cross-on, so quality is poor. Energy drops to around 800-2400 (moderate). Nothing to rave about.
Now, Friday the 10th is where I get keen. The morning is still average with a 6ft SE swell, but the afternoon – beauty. The wind drops to glassy, nil from the SW, and you got a 6ft SE swell at 10 seconds. Energy is moderate at 549, but clean conditions are everything. This is the first true standout, Friday afternoon. That’s your best wave of the first week.
Saturday 11 July stays clean with light cross-off breezes, but the swell drops to 4ft in the morning and 3ft by the afternoon. Still fun for a longboard or a fish, with the period out at 12 seconds in the arvo giving it some shape. From there, the surf fades through Sunday and Monday, with the swell dropping below 3ft. The offshore wind on Sunday is a tease, but there’s barely any wave energy (153-209, weak).
The second week, from 14 July, you get a little pulse of S swell back – 5ft to 6ft, with clean cross-off winds from the west. The period is short though, only 7-8 seconds, so it’s a windswell feel. Energy stays moderate (290-675). It’s surfable and clean, but nothing special.
From Thursday 16 July, it goes downhill. Southerly winds crank up to 16-28 mph, cross-shore and messy, with lumpy chop. The swell is all over – 5ft, then dropping to 2ft, then a weird 5ft with a long 15-second period on the 17th, but the wind ruins it. Energy is there (253-402, moderate to weak), but conditions are poor. That long period groundswell would be better at a point or reef, but at a beach and reef setup with that wind, it’s a write-off.
The last few days, from 18 to 21 July, are just poor. Strong cross-on winds, lumpy seas, and tiny swell. The 20th and 21st have clean winds but almost no energy (79 and below, very weak).
So, to wrap it up: Friday afternoon, 10 July, is the one – glassy conditions on a 6ft SE swell at 10 seconds. Get out there. The other glimmer is Tuesday 14 and Wednesday 15 July – clean, but the swell is short-period and small. Crowds at Thirroul can be a factor sometimes, so keep an eye out.
All the best,
Rusty
