The Lowdown
G'day, Rusty here, and I've been staring at the charts for the South Coast region, specifically Thirroul. Honestly, it's a bit of a slow burn for the next week, but there's a proper run of clean swell coming through in the second week that's got me excited. The water temp is sitting at about 65°, which is pretty standard for this time of year.
Let's start with what's on offer. The first few days are a write-off. Tuesday the 14th has tiny waves, barely a ripple. Wednesday and Thursday the 15th and 16th see a pulse of 8ft to 7ft south swell, but the wind is all wrong – cross-shore and cross-onshore, making it a choppy mess. The energy is moderate to strong, with readings of 2174 and 866, but it's not doing us any favours. Friday through to Sunday the 17th to 19th are all poor, with small, weak waves and messy winds. There's a four-day gap here with nothing worth paddling out for.
Things start to turn around on Monday the 20th. The morning brings a clean 5ft swell from the east-northeast with a 10-second period and glassy conditions. The energy is moderate at 558. This is a solid, fun option for a paddle. The glassy conditions carry into Tuesday morning the 21st as well, with a similar 5ft ENE swell, but the afternoon gets blown out.
Now, here's the standout. The real action kicks off on Thursday the 23rd. Thirroul is the spot. We've got a 6ft swell from the east with a 12-second period, generating strong wave energy (851). The morning is clean with a light cross-offshore breeze from the southwest. This is offering excellent shape and power. The crowd factor is listed as "sometimes," so you might have a few others out, but it's worth it. This is a solid intermediate level, pushing 6ft, so it's a bit too much for beginners.
Friday the 24th and Saturday the 25th are also looking prime. Friday morning has a similar 6ft east swell with a 12-second period and clean conditions. Saturday morning delivers 5ft from the east, again 12-second period, and a clean offshore wind from the west-northwest, giving us 742 of moderate to strong energy. This is a fantastic run of surf.
The quality holds through Sunday the 26th into Monday the 27th with 5ft to 4ft east swells, long periods, and clean conditions, though the energy drops to moderate. By Tuesday the 28th and Wednesday the 29th, the swell is fading to around 4ft and then 2ft, but the winds stay favorable, cleaning up what's left.
So, to wrap it up: the first week is a write-off with a few days of poor, choppy surf. The absolute best on offer is the Thursday 23rd through Saturday 25th window, with clean, powerful east swells and solid energy. That's your window. If you can wait, it'll be worth it.
Rusty.
