The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's have a look at the 16-day picture for Thirroul. It's a beach and reef setup, and it's exposed to the SE swell. The water temp is about average for this time of year, nothing unusual to report.
Honestly, the first week is a write-off. We've got a lot of small, weak, and messy surf with poor conditions. The only real standout is a brief pulse on Wednesday the 15th. A solid 10ft south swell rolls in Wednesday morning, but the wind is a messy cross-shore. The combined energy is a thumping 3228, so there's juice, but the wind will make it a challenge. It's big enough for experts only, and the 10-second period is a bit short and raw. By Wednesday afternoon, it's dropping to 6ft with a cross-onshore chop, no good.
After that, it's a long gap of nothing. From Thursday the 16th all the way through to Sunday the 20th, it's a mix of tiny, weak, and onshore slop. The swell is small, the energy is low (under 500), and the wind is just wrong. Not worth paddling out for.
The second week starts to look a bit more promising. It's not pumping, but the conditions get cleaner. The real standout in the whole 16-day window is the period from the 21st of July right through to the 25th. We get a consistent 3ft to 5ft east-northeast swell with a 10-second period. The energy is low to moderate, but the winds turn offshore or go glassy. On the 21st, Tuesday morning, it's clean with a light WNW offshore. The 23rd and 24th in particular look tidy, with clean offshore winds and even a glassy Friday afternoon. The 24th is the pick of the lot: 4ft east swell, glassy conditions, and a light breeze. That's your window for a clean, fun, longboardable wave. The swell direction is from the east, which is fine for this spot.
The crowds at Thirroul can be a factor sometimes, so for that clean glassy Friday afternoon, you might have some company, but it's worth it for the conditions.
Things fade out again from the 26th, with onshore winds and a strong SSE wind change on the 27th and 28th that just messes everything up. The 29th is a write-off too.
So, bottom line: the first week is a bust. The best bet is the run from the 21st to the 25th, with the standout being the 24th of July. Clean, glassy, and surfable for all levels.
Rusty.
