Alright, let’s get into it.
Honestly, mate, it’s a tough stretch ahead. We’ve got a solid gap with no real surf on offer right from the get-go. The first chance to paddle out isn’t until Monday, July 7th, and even then, it’s a struggle. From now until then, it’s flat or just blown out junk.
The Harbour is the only spot on the radar, and it’s a beach/groyne setup that’s exposed to the swell. For the entire forecast, the waves just don’t show up with any real energy. The combined energy levels are laughably low – we’re talking single-digit and low double-digit numbers (0 to 22) for most of the period, which is weak. You’ll see a slight pulse around Tuesday, July 15th, where the energy climbs to 69 and 58, but it’s all straight onshore wind. The swell heights creep up to 3 ft from the NE, but with a period of only 6-7 seconds, it’s just messy, wind-driven chop. Not worth the paddle out unless you’re after a fight.
For the first week, the mornings on Friday, July 11th look glassy with a tiny 0.7 ft SSE swell, but it’s so weak (energy 1) you’ll be doing more sitting than surfing. Saturday, July 12th brings a bit more size (2 ft from NNE) but the wind is cross-onshore and choppy, making it a write-off. The rest is a mix of onshore winds and tiny swells.
Into the second week, the trend continues. A bit more swell shows up around Tuesday, July 15th and Wednesday, July 16th – 3 ft from the NE with onshore winds. The period stays short (6-7 seconds), so don’t expect any real push. The combined energy hangs in the moderate range (49-69), but with the wind constantly onshore, it’s a churned-up mess.
For beginners, stay home. The swell rarely gets over 5 ft, so it’s not a safety issue, but the quality is so poor it’s just frustrating. For experts, there’s nothing here to get excited about either. The setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing on most of these days.
The water temp is about average for the time of year at 54°F – not a shock to the system, but you’ll still want a decent wetsuit.
If there’s any standout, it’s the Tuesday, July 15th morning session, but that’s a long way off and the wind could easily kill it. I’d say hold tight and keep an eye on the forecasts. It tends not to stay this poor for long.
