The Lowdown
Righto, let’s have a look at the forecast for The Harbour. I’m not gonna lie to ya, this 16-day window is a bit of a fizzer overall. We’ve got a long stretch of nothing much happening, with only a couple of brief windows where the waves might be worth a paddle. The first decent surfable day doesn’t show up until Saturday the 18th, and even then it’s pretty ordinary. Before that, it’s all small, weak, and onshore muck.
The first real chance comes on Saturday the 18th. The swell is coming from the NE at 4ft, with a period of 8 seconds and a combined energy of 182 (moderate). It’s not huge, but the wind is glassy, 0 mph, which is a big win for clean conditions. The water temperature is 58°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year. The Harbour is a beach/groyne setup, exposed to the NE, so this is the best bet of the whole outlook. It’s a fairly consistent spot, but it can get crowded sometimes, so get in early. The swell direction is NE, which is not the optimum SE direction, so the waves might be a bit weak and wonky, but it’s the only real day with clean surf on offer.
Sunday the 19th still has some life, with NE swell dropping to 3ft and 4ft, periods around 8 seconds, and a combined energy of 119 (moderate). The morning has a light cross-offshore breeze from the SSE, keeping things clean. The afternoon gets a bit windier, but still rideable. The swell is still from the NE, not the optimum direction, so it’s just surfable, not special.
Then that’s it. From Monday the 20th onward, the swell drops right off, with heights under 2ft and energy levels falling into the single digits. The wind is often offshore, which is nice, but with no swell to work with, it’s a complete flat spell. The longest gap is from the 20th right through to the end of the 16-day window on the 28th of July, with nothing worth paddling for. The Harbour is fairly consistent usually, so this kind of blank run is a bit of a bummer, but it happens.
So, the standout is without a doubt Saturday the 18th. It’s the only day where the variables line up for a clean, glassy session, even if the waves aren’t firing on all cylinders. Get out there for a few small ones as the sun’s out.
Rusty.
