The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for The Harbour.
To be straight with you, the next 16 days look like a write-off for any decent surf. It’s a bit of a dry spell, I’m not gonna lie. The Harbour is a beach/groyne setup that’s fairly consistent usually, but this forecast window is just giving us nothing to work with.
We don’t get our first real swell until Sunday the 19th of July, with a 5 ft NE swell. But the wind is a cross-on from the NNW at 16 mph, and the combined energy of all swells is moderate at 380. The water temp is 57°, which is about average for the time of year. The surf is just poor and choppy – not worth paddling out for. That afternoon, it cleans up slightly with a light NE breeze, but the swell drops to 5 ft and it’s still onshore, so it’s a mess.
The rest of the first week is a bust. A tiny 3 ft swell on Monday the 20th with more cross-on wind, followed by days of next to nothing. Tuesday the 21st is glassy but flat as a pancake. Wednesday the 22nd gets a fresh NNW breeze at 19 mph, but the swell is only 1.0 ft – you’re just getting blown around for no reason. Thursday the 23rd is glassy and flat, and Friday the 24th has a tiny 1.0 ft S swell with a cross-on breeze. Not a single wave worth riding.
The second week doesn’t improve. A few ripples of 2 ft to 2 ft pop up, but the period is short, around 4 seconds, and the wind is either cross-on or just not cooperating. The combined energy is weak, staying in the single digits or low teens. The last few days of July and into August, we see some glassy conditions on the 31st of July with a 2 ft NE swell, but the period is only 4 seconds – it’s just a weak, fat bump. The energy is only 17.
For the whole 16-day run, there is no standout session. The closest thing to a window is the afternoon of the 31st of July, with glassy conditions and a 2 ft swell, but it’s just too small and weak to get excited about. The Harbour is just taking a break. Sometimes that’s the way it goes.
Rusty.
