The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's in store for us over the next couple of weeks.
Well, to be honest, it's a tough start. The Harbour is looking pretty flat and messy for the first few days. We've got a stretch from Thursday, August 20th, right through to Sunday the 23rd with nothing but poor surf conditions. The wind is all over the shop, mostly cross to cross-on, and it's blowing a fresh breeze, making it lumpy and choppy. There's a couple of cleaner windows on Saturday and Sunday with lighter cross-off winds, but there's just no swell to work with.
Monday the 24th finally sees a tiny pulse of swell, a measly 1.0 ft from the SSE, but it's a short 3-second period with a combined energy of just 2, so it's barely rideable. The wind is clean though, which is a tease. Tuesday the 25th is a little better, with 2 ft from the SE, but the period is still short at 4-5 seconds, and the wind is cross-on, making it choppy. The energy is still very weak, sitting at 19 and 22.
Now, things get a bit more interesting on Wednesday the 26th. We see a jump in swell to 6 ft from the ESE with a 7-second period. The combined energy shoots up to 270, which is moderate. The trouble is, the wind is a moderate cross-shore, and the wave comment is still "poor surf conditions" with a cross-chop. It's a step up in size, but the quality isn't there for a standout. Thursday the 27th has a 4 ft swell from the SSE, but again, the wind is cross-on and it's raining, so not a great combo.
The real standout, and the only one I'd really get excited about, is Saturday the 30th of August or Sunday the 31st... wait, no. Let me look closer. We have Friday the 28th of August with a clean morning, 3 ft from the ENE and a 3 mph wind, but the period is only 7 seconds and the energy is a weak 67. Not worth it.
Looking right through the whole 16-day window, every single recorded time slot says "poor surf conditions." There is not a single good surf option on offer. The swell either isn't there, or when it does show up, the wind or the short period ruins it. The highest energy we see is 428 on the 26th, but that's still flagged as poor. It's a real shame. The Harbour just can't catch a break here. For a beach and groyne setup, with this much onshore wind, the setup would honestly be more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing for a few of those days. Forecasts can change, but as it stands, this is a blank run.
Rusty.
