The Lowdown
Alright folks, it’s Rusty here, and I gotta be straight with you – the next 16 days are looking pretty grim for a paddle. The Harbour is the only break on the menu, and it’s a tough stretch for surfers.
The overall pattern is one of very small, weak swells and a lot of onshore or cross-shore wind. The water is sitting at about 58°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, but that’s the only small mercy.
We’ve got a massive gap right out of the gate. From now until the morning of Sunday the 19th of July, there’s nothing worth paddling out for. The conditions are poor, with tiny waves, strong winds, and a lot of chop. It’s a full three days of flat or junk.
Finally, on Sunday the 19th of July, we get a bit of a pulse, but it’s not a home run. The Harbour is a beach/groyne setup, and it’s exposed to the swell. The combined swell energy jumps to a moderate 524, but the swell is a powerful 6ft from the NE with a nice 10-second period. That’s a solid groundswell, but it’s going to be a bit of a handful. The morning is a cross-shore mess, but the Sunday afternoon looks like the best of a bad bunch. The wind goes light and cross-off from the SSE, cleaning things up for a 5ft NE swell (396 energy). It’s a marginal forecast, but for a couple of hours, it might be rideable. This is a standout, but only because the rest of the window is so quiet.
The rest of the forecast is a straight-up bust. From Monday the 20th all the way through to the end of the month, the swells are tiny – we’re talking 0.7ft to 2ft with very short periods. The combined energy is weak, often in single or low double digits. There are a few glassy moments, like on Tuesday the 21st morning and again on Sunday the 26th afternoon, but with nothing but a tiny ripple, there’s nothing to catch.
Honestly, for the next two weeks, this setup looks more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer, especially on those windier days. The consistent onshore flow and lack of any real swell just aren’t giving us a window. Keep your board in the car for the next blip, but don’t hold your breath.
Rusty.
