The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s chew through what The Harbour’s got lined up for the next couple of weeks.
Right from the start, it’s a tough watch. The Harbour is a beach-and-groyne setup, exposed to the swell, but from Monday 13th July through Saturday 18th July, it’s all tiny, weak, onshore slop. Swell heights barely touch 3 ft, with periods around 6 to 7 seconds – that’s short-period windswill, not groundswell. The combined swell energy never gets above 56 – that’s weak. The wind is mostly onshore or cross-onshore, and the water is 58°F, which is a touch warmer than normal, but that doesn’t help when there’s nothing to ride.
Sunday 19th July brings a little glimmer. The morning and afternoon see a light cross-off breeze from the SSE, and the surf is called “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions.” Swell is still small at 3 ft to 3 ft from the NE, period around 7 seconds, and the combined energy is only 79 to 89 – moderate. It’s clean, but it’s not going to get anyone excited. For a beginner, it’s okay, but anyone looking for a proper wave is out of luck.
The next few days are dead. Monday 20th July to Wednesday 22nd July, tiny waves or flat, with wind picking up. Thursday 23rd July and Friday 24th July, mostly flat or ankle-biters – 0.7 ft to 1 ft bumps. Wind is cross-off or cross, but there’s no swell.
Saturday 25th July is the one to circle – if you’re desperate. The morning brings a clean, moderate offshore breeze from the SSW, with a 2 ft swell from the ESE at 6 seconds. The combined energy is 38 – still weak. It’s small, but it’s clean. This is the only time in the whole 16 days the wind is offshore, so the surface will be glassy. The wave comment still says “poor surf conditions,” so keep your expectations low.
After that, Sunday 26th July to Tuesday 28th July is flat or near-flat, with strong winds and no swell.
So, the best of a bad bunch? Sunday 19th July gives you the most rideable waves, but the conditions are ordinary. The real standout is Saturday 25th July morning – the only offshore slot, with clean little lines. If you’re itching to paddle, that’s your window.
This is a long, dry stretch for The Harbour. It’s not unusual for the area to go quiet, but it still stings. Forecasts can change, so keep your eyes peeled.
Rusty.
