The Lowdown
Right then, let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for The Harbour. I’ll be straight with you – this is a tough one to call. The 16-day window is open, but the surf is not playing ball. You’re looking at a long stretch of no real action, so if you’re itching to get wet, you’ll need to be patient.
The water temp is sitting at 57°, which is pretty much what you’d expect for this time of year, nothing unusual there.
We kick off this Tuesday, the 14th of July, with a tiny 3 ft swell from the NE, but it’s a short-period, weak affair with an onshore breeze. The energy is next to nothing (75), and it’s just not going to hold up. That theme continues right through the week. The swell stays small, the wind is mostly onshore or cross-onshore, and the wave comment is “poor surf conditions” across the board. It’s a flat spell, plain and simple.
By Friday the 17th, the wind picks up to 19 mph from the NNW, and the swell is a messy 2 ft to 3 ft. It’s lumpy, cross-chop, and just not worth paddling out for. The weekend of the 18th and 19th brings a bit more energy – on Saturday the 18th we get a 5 ft swell from the NE with a period of 9 seconds, giving us a combined energy of 332 (moderate). But the wind is howling at 22-25 mph from the NNW, making it a complete mess. That’s not surf; that’s a washing machine.
The whole of the following week, from the 21st to the 29th, is a desert of tiny waves or flat calm. There’s a brief moment on the 26th of July, a Sunday afternoon, where the wind goes light offshore from the SW (9 mph) and the sea turns clean. But the swell is only 2 ft from the E with a period of 6 seconds, and the energy is a paltry 16. It’s glassy, but you’d be lucky to get a ride.
The standout here? Well, there isn’t one. If I had to pick a moment, it’s that Sunday afternoon of the 26th. The wind is clean, but the swell is just too small and weak to make it a proper session. It’s a day for a gentle paddle, not a surf.
For the rest of the window, it’s a no-go. The setup is more interesting for a kite than a paddle, honestly. It’s a long, blank run, and for this area, that’s not unusual at this time of year. Keep an eye on the forecasts, though – things can change.
Rusty.
