The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s happening at The Harbour over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, you’re looking at a long, dry spell. Honestly, there’s a proper stretch of nothing here. From Friday the 21st of August all the way through to Wednesday the 2nd of September, the surf is just not on. The Harbour is going to be flat, messy, or just plain ugly. You’ll see a few tiny 0.7ft to 1ft bumps, but with cross-shore and onshore winds, it’s not worth paddling out for. The wind is fresh and strong at times, especially around the 28th with 22 to 25 mph southerlies, but those waves are still only 4ft and so short-period they’re just lumpy. The water temperature sits around 58°, which is pretty normal for this time of year, so no surprises there.
The first real sign of life arrives on the Wednesday morning of the 2nd of September. We’ve got a 5ft swell pushing in from the SSE, with a period of 6 seconds. The combined energy is a solid 274, which is moderate but noticeable. The wind is a slight air from the south – clean, glassy stuff. The Harbour is a beach/groyne setup, so with that swell direction matching the optimum SE, it’ll be working. This is your standout, but it’s not a monster. It’s a fun, surfable day for intermediates. The afternoon drops a little to 4ft, still clean, but the energy drops to 122. The swell is a bit short-period, so expect it to be a bit bouncy and shorey, but it’s the best you’ll get.
After that, it’s back to flat and forgettable. Thursday the 3rd is tiny, and Friday the 4th through to Saturday the 5th of September is just no good – small, weak, and choppy. The whole run fizzles out.
If you’re keen, that Wednesday the 2nd of September morning is your only real window. It’s clean, it’s got a little push, and the harbour will be quiet. Don’t expect anything else in this 16-day window.
