The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for The Harbour over the next couple of weeks.

Honestly, I gotta be straight with you – this is a grim run. The whole 16-day window is basically a write-off. We’re looking at a long, dry spell with no real surf to get excited about. The Harbour is a beach/groyne setup, and it just isn’t lining up at all.

First up, a little context: the water temp is sitting at 58°F, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so the rubber won’t feel as thick. But that’s where the good news ends.

We kick off on Wednesday the 15th with tiny 2ft NE windswell, but it’s weak, with the combined energy only at 20. The wind is cross-shore, and the comment says it all – “poor surf conditions.” That’s the theme for the next few days. Thursday the 16th is glassy but with almost no swell at all (energy of 1), so you’re just bobbing around. Friday the 17th gets a bit of wind, but it’s a nasty 19 mph cross-onshore, making it lumpy and choppy.

The weekend of the 18th and 19th sees the swell actually build – Saturday the 18th hits 6ft from the NE with a period of 9 seconds and energy jumping to 599. That’s moderate wave energy, but it’s messy. The wind is a fresh cross-onshore, so it’s choppy and blown out. That kind of size in these conditions is more of a kite-surfing affair than a paddle session. Sunday the 19th is a bit smaller at 5ft, and the wind eases to a gentle cross-shore, but the forecast is still labelled “marginal” – not worth the paddle out.

Then we hit a proper dead zone. From Monday the 20th all the way through to the end of the month, there’s practically nothing. The swell drops to piddly little waves, often 2ft or less, with energy values in the single digits. The wind is all over the place – cross-on, offshore, glassy – but it doesn’t matter when there’s no wave to ride. The odd clean moment on the 23rd and 30th (with a light offshore) will look tempting, but the swell is just too small to do anything with.

Bottom line: there’s no standout, no hidden gem, nothing to recommend. The Harbour is going to be flat or blown out for the entire 16 days. Don’t waste the petrol. Sometimes it’s like this, but forecasts can turn around. Keep an eye on it, but for now, grab a coffee and wait.

Rusty.
