The Lowdown
Alright, folks. Rusty here. Let's break down the next couple of weeks for The Harbour.
Right off the bat, I'm not going to sugarcoat it – it's a long, dry spell. We're looking at a solid gap with no real surf worth talking about for the next 16 days. The Harbour is a beach and groyne spot, and it's just not catching anything. The first few days up to the 19th of July are a bust – tiny, weak waves with a messy cross-shore wind. You'd be fighting knee-high chop, and it's just not worth the effort.
Now, there is one glimmer of hope. On the morning of Sunday, the 19th of July, a pulse of NE swell is forecast around 6ft, but it's got a 10-second period. That's a moderate energy pulse (652), and it's a groundswell, but the wind is a moderate cross-onshore, so it's going to be choppy and messy. The Harbour is a beach break, so that longer period will make it break too straight and be a bit of a handful. That afternoon, the swell drops to 5ft and the wind lightens up, but it's still cross-on. For a brief window, it might be a marginal session for a confident intermediate, but it's not a standout. The water temperature is about average for the time of year, so nothing unusual there.
After that 19th, it's a total write-off. The rest of July and into the first of August is a blank. We get some glassy days, like the 21st and the 28th of July, but there's no swell. We get clean offshore winds towards the end of July and into August, but the swell is tiny – 0.6ft, 1ft... it's ankle-snapping stuff. The combined energy is barely a whisper (1 to 14). The wind is clean, but you can't ride what isn't there. Honestly, this setup looks more interesting for a kite surfer than anyone on a paddle board right now. It's a tough run, but sometimes that's how it goes around here. Forecasts can change, but for now, keep your board in the bag.
Rusty.
