The Lowdown
Alright, let’s break it down for the local area. Truth is, we’re in for a long quiet spell, so don’t get your hopes up.
For the first week or so, it’s pretty much dead. From Saturday the 22nd right through to mid-week, there’s just not enough energy to bother with. You’ll see a few tiny waves, maybe 1 to 2 feet, but with poor conditions and no power, it’s not worth paddling out. The water is around 58°F, which is normal for this time of year.
The Harbour (beach/groyne) is the only spot in the picture, but it’s not looking good. The best swell direction is from the SE, and we do see a little pulse around Wednesday the 26th. A tiny 2ft SE swell shows up, but it’s only 5 seconds, and the wind is on it, so it’s choppy. Later that afternoon, the swell builds to 4ft from the ESE with a 6-second period, and the combined energy climbs a bit (103), but it’s still not clean. Light cross-onshore wind means you’ll be dealing with little ripples.
Thursday the 27th has a bit more juice – 4ft from the east with a 7-second period and energy reading 128, but the wind is cross-shore and conditions are poor. Friday the 28th is probably the best of a bad run, with a 5ft swell from the ENE, 8-second period, and solid energy of 236. The morning has offshore wind, which is a big plus, so it might be glassy for a short window. But the break is exposed to the SE, and this swell direction isn’t ideal. The period is short, so don’t expect much push. It might be worth a look for the experienced guys, but beginners should stay out as it’s over 5ft.
After that, it drops right off. The wind gets strong from the west on Saturday the 29th, but the swell is tiny again, 2ft, and the energy is weak (75). It’s clean, but you’d be surfing ankle-biters. From Sunday the 30th all the way through to the 6th of September, it’s mostly flat or close to it. There’s a little 2ft pulse on the 6th, but with a 28 mph cross-wind, it’s more of a kite session than a surf. The combined energy is only 25, so you’re better off on the couch.
If you’re really keen, that Friday morning the 28th is the one to watch, but it’s a long way off and the forecast could change. Keep an eye on it, but don’t plan your week around it.
