The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ve gotta be straight with you – we’re in for a grim stretch. The Harbour is the only break on the cards, and honestly, it’s a write-off for the entire 16-day window. There’s not one single session that’s worth paddling out for. Every single forecast entry is marked as “poor surf conditions,” and the score is a flat zero across the board. That’s a tough pill to swallow.
We start off this Saturday the 18th with a fresh cross-onshore breeze hitting 19 mph, and the swell is a messy 5 ft out of the NE. The combined energy is moderate at 275. Sunday the 19th sees onshore wind from the NE at 9 mph, with a 5 ft NE swell at a short 9-second period and energy of 357 – still no good. Monday the 20th drops to a weak 3 ft NE swell (80 energy) with a cross-onshore breeze. Tuesday the 21st goes glassy by the afternoon, but the swell is a pathetic 2 ft from the NE at a 6-second period, with only 15 energy. It’s just not happening.
Wednesday the 22nd is a total loss with fresh cross-onshore wind and tiny swell. Thursday the 23rd offers a moment of glassy conditions in the morning and a clean cross-offshore in the afternoon, with a 3 ft NE swell at 9 seconds – energy is 110 in the afternoon. But it’s still not enough to get excited about. The rest of the week is more of the same: tiny waves, poor wind, and zero energy. By the time we hit the 25th, we’ve got a 3 ft NW windswell with a 4-second period, and a fresh cross-shore wind. The 26th is flat.
Water temperature is sitting at 58°F, which is about 2°F above average for this time of year – a touch warmer than usual, but that’s small comfort.
The whole second week, from the 27th of July through to the 2nd of August, is a total blank. There are a few glassy or clean moments, but the swell is either non-existent or so tiny it’s not worth mentioning. The combined energy values are mostly in the single digits or zero. It’s a long, dry spell.
If you’re desperate, the only tiny glimmer might be the afternoon of Thursday the 23rd, with that 3 ft NE swell and clean conditions, but it’s still a poor surf day. Honestly, this is one of those rare dead runs for The Harbour. It’s a beach and groyne setup, so with the poor surf quality and wind, it might be more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer, but even then it’s weak.
Keep your board waxed and your eyes on the forecasts – they can change, but right now, we’re in the deep freeze.
Rusty.
