The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for The Harbour over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, mate, it’s a grim stretch for a paddle. The whole 16-day window is a write-off for decent surf. We’ve got a long, dry gap from now until the 19th of July, with nothing but tiny, junk windswell and cross-onshore breezes messing up any chance of a wave. The Harbour is a beach/groyne setup, and with this onshore flow, it’s just gonna be a lumpy, choppy mess. Combined energy values are almost all in the weak category, with most under 24 (13, 24, 0s), so there’s just no push. The water temp is a touch warmer than normal at 58°, but that’s about the only nice thing I can say.
On the 19th of July, there’s a brief spike. Sunday morning sees a 6ft swell from the NE, with a period of 9 seconds, and the combined energy hits a moderate 513. That’s the biggest energy we see. But, the wind is a cross-shore from the NNW at 12 mph, and the forecast flags it as marginal with questionable tide conditions. It’s an intermediate-level wave, but with that messy cross-breeze, it’s not going to be clean. The afternoon drops to 5ft and 357 energy, but the wind switches to a light cross-onshore from the ENE. It’s not terrible, but it’s not a standout.
After that, it’s back to a flat spell. The 20th through the 31st of July are all “poor surf conditions” with tiny swells, often under 2ft, and periods of 4 to 8 seconds – that’s short-period, weak windswell. Combined energy is almost always in the single or double digits. There’s a glassy morning on the 24th of July, but the swell is a pathetic 1.0ft, so you’d be floating, not surfing.
The very end of the run, on the 1st of August, shows a bit more size with 3ft to 5ft from the SE, but the wind is howling out of the WNW at 25 to 28 mph. That’s a strong breeze, and while it’s cross-offshore, the energy (66 to 167) is still moderate. For a beach/groyne break, that much wind is going to be messy and blown out.
So, the honest truth is there’s nothing here worth getting wet for. No standout windows. The Harbour is rarely breaking with any quality, and with this forecast, it’s a long, flat run. The best you could hope for is a gamble on the 19th of July morning, but with marginal conditions, you’d be better off waiting for the next change in the charts. It’s a kite-surfing setup with that wind on the 1st of August more than a paddle surfer’s dream.
Rusty.
