The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, let's talk about The Harbour. Gotta be honest with you, mate – the next couple of weeks are looking pretty bleak for a proper paddle. We've got a real dry spell on our hands.
Looking at the whole 16-day window, there's barely a whisper of decent swell. The first solid pulse of energy doesn't show up until Saturday the 18th of July, and even then, it's a mixed bag. Before that, we've got days of flat, weak, or messy conditions. From now until that Saturday morning, it's essentially a write-off – small, choppy, and not worth wetting a suit.
Now, for the one blip on the radar. Saturday afternoon on the 18th of July sees a 5ft swell from the NE at 10 seconds. The wind is a stiff, onshore N breeze at 18 mph, which is going to chop things up. But, the combined energy is a solid 556, so there’s some real grunt behind it. This is more of a kite-surfing setup than a clean paddle session for the beach/groyne break here. The Harbour is exposed, but that onshore wind and short-ish period will make it lumpy.
Sunday the 19th of July is the only real chance for a surf. The morning shows 6ft NE swell at 10 seconds, with a light cross-shore NNW breeze at 6 mph and a combined energy of 535. That's your best shot. The wind is light and will keep the surface tidy. The period is moderate, so you'll get some shape. It's marginal, but it's the only window with clean-ish conditions and that peaky NE swell. The afternoon drops off quickly with the wind swinging SE and turning onshore.
After Sunday, we're back to nothing. The rest of the window is a graveyard of tiny, weak swells and flat conditions, with a few glassy mornings around the 22nd and 25th of July, but no wave energy to go with them. The Harbour simply isn't getting any love.
If you’re a beginner, that Sunday swell is over 5ft, so it might feel a bit much. For the more experienced, it’s your only window this week. The water temp is about 58°, which is a touch warmer than normal for the time of year, so the wetsuit will be a bit more bearable.
It’s a tough outlook, but that's the way it goes sometimes. The consistent breaks aren't showing up, so we wait. Let's just hope the long-range charts start to look more promising next week.
Rusty.
