Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright, let’s get straight to it. I’m Rusty, and I’ve been watching this stretch for a while.
The Harbour ain’t firing. Not even close. We’re looking at a long, flat run here – basically the whole 16-day window is a write-off for any decent surf. From now until the end of the outlook, the wave energy is barely registering, with combined swell energy figures mostly in single digits or low double digits – like a weak 28 on the 4th of July afternoon, or a 29 on the morning of the 11th. That’s barely a bump, not a wave you’d paddle out for.
The first real hint of something comes on Saturday, July 18th – that’s over a week away – with a modest 3 ft swell out of the NE, period of 6 seconds, and combined energy of 72. Still poor surf conditions according to the data, and the wind is a cross-off from the south at 16 mph. The swell direction (NE) doesn’t match the optimum SE direction for The Harbour, so even that bump isn’t ideal. It’s a beach/groyne setup, exposed to swell, but with such weak energy and short period, it’s really only offering small, weak waves. The water temp anomaly isn’t noted, so we can assume it’s about average for the time of year.
Most of the period sees tiny swells under 3 ft, with periods under 6 seconds – that’s short-period windswell, not groundswell. Winds are often cross-off or offshore, keeping the surface clean, but there’s just no push. From the 3rd of July right through to the 17th, scores are all zero – not one stand-out day. This is one of those stretches where the forecast is poor and it’s not looking to change.
If you’re desperate for a paddle, the morning of July 18th offers the best of a bad bunch: 3 ft, clean, cross-off wind. But don't expect any power or shape. For anyone who isn’t a dedicated local, I’d say give it a miss. The setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing on the afternoons with stronger cross-off winds and choppy conditions.
For the first week, there’s genuinely nothing to recommend. The second week offers that slight blip on the 18th, but it’s still a long wait and not exactly pumping. It’s flat, flat, flat.
I’ll keep my eyes out, but for now, don’t bother waxing up.
