Alright, gather 'round and listen up. Rusty here, and I've taken a good hard look at what's coming for your local stretch. Gotta be straight with you: the next couple of weeks are looking pretty tough, so don't get your hopes up for anything ripping.
Right now, for the Tarnos - La Digue zone, it’s pretty flat and messy. We start off with a little bump of swell on the morning of Saturday the 4th of July, around 4ft from the NW, but that wind is coming from the NW as well, making it a cross-on. It's a weak start with a combined swell energy of just 225. The water temp is sitting at 74°F, which is a huge 7°F warmer than average – feels like a bath in there, but there’s no juice to go with it.
Honestly, the entire first week is a write-off. We get a tiny pulse of groundswell on Sunday the 5th, with a period of 11 seconds, but the swell is only 2ft. It will be glassy in the morning (NE wind at 3 mph), so it's clean, but there's no power behind it. For the next several days, the wind is just never our friend, swinging from onshore to cross-onshore, and the swell stays below 2ft. It's pretty frustrating. Monday morning the 6th does offer a little clean 2ft wave with offshores from the ENE, but again, the energy is weak. If you're desperate for a longboard and a paddle, that’s your window, but don't expect to do much more than cruise.
There is a tiny bit more hope in the second week. Around Sunday the 12th of July, we see the swell energy bump up to 216, with 4ft swell from the NW. The problem is the wind is still a light cross-on from the NW. It’s marginal, but it’s an improvement on the tiny closeouts we’ve been seeing. The 15th of July, Wednesday, looks like a possible bright spot. The morning shows a 3ft NW swell with a cross-offshore breeze from the NE at only 3 mph. That should clean things up nicely for a little beach break session. The period is 10 seconds, so it’s okay, not incredible. After that, it trails off again into nothing.
To be blunt, there are no standouts here. The surf’s been inconsistent, and the windows of decent conditions are tiny. For a beach/jetty setup like this, you really want the swell and wind to sync up, and they just don't. Most days, the onshore wind will just chop it all up. If you're a beginner, the waves are small enough for you to learn on the glassy mornings, but the bigger days are weak and messy. For anyone else, it’s a frustrating wait.
Rusty.
