The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s cast an eye over the next couple of weeks at Tarnos - La Digue.
First off, the water is sitting at a balmy 77°F right now, which is a solid 7°F warmer than usual for this time of year. That’s seriously unusual, so you’ll be in for a warm one if you’re getting in.
Right, the honest truth is this forecast starts with a proper flat spell. From now through until the 27th of July, it’s basically a write-off. We’re looking at tiny, messy waves with poor energy, and the wind is mostly onshore or cross-onshore. There’s a brief moment on the morning of the 22nd where the wind goes cross-off with a light breeze, and the morning of the 24th goes glassy, but the swell is tiny – just 2ft with a short, weak period. It’s not worth paddling out for. The combined energy readings are low, so there’s simply no power in the water.
Then, things start to get interesting. The 27th of July sees a pulse of swell kick in, but it’s still messy with cross-on winds. The real standout happens on the morning of Tuesday the 28th of July. The wind will be glassy and the swell jumps to a solid 8ft from the WNW. The combined energy hits a solid moderate level. That’s a proper session for experienced surfers. The afternoon of the same day pushes up to 8ft, which is edging into expert-only territory, but the wind goes cross-on, making it a bit choppier.
The absolute best on offer is the morning of Wednesday the 29th of July. We’ve got 8ft of NW swell, a longer period, and clean conditions with a cross-off breeze. The combined energy is very strong, giving you powerful, well-shaped waves. This is the one to circle on the calendar. It’s an excellent window for experienced surfers.
The 30th of July morning still has some clean 5ft swell with an offshore wind, but it drops off after that. From the 31st of July onwards, the surf fades back into smaller, weaker, and wind-affected conditions, with the morning of the 3rd of August offering a last little glassy, ordinary 3ft wave before it all goes flat again.
So, to keep it simple: suffer through the flat spell, then the morning of the 28th is good, but the morning of the 29th is the real standout. Get on it.
Rusty.
