The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up for Tarnos - La Digue.
Honestly, mate, it’s a tough stretch to call. For the next week and a half, the surf is just not happening. The swell is tiny, mostly under 3 ft, the wind is mostly onshore or cross-onshore, and every single session is marked as poor surf conditions. The combined swell energy is weak, mainly in the 20s and 30s (24), nothing to get excited about. There’s a short period of glassy conditions on Saturday morning, July 18, with a light 2 ft NW swell and a period of 5 seconds, but it’s just too small to do anything with. The water temperature is 77°F which is 8°F warmer than usual – that’s pretty unusual for this time of year, so at least it’ll be warm when you’re floating around doing nothing.
The first real glimpse of something happens on Monday morning, July 20, where the swell bumps up to 4 ft from the NNW with a period of 7 seconds and the combined energy hits 111 (moderate). But the wind is still onshore from the WNW, so it’s going to be messy. That pattern continues through the week – small to moderate swell, but the wind just won’t cooperate.
Now, the standout – and I mean the only one worth paddling out for – is Saturday, July 25. We’ve got a 7 ft swell from the WNW in the morning, period of 7 seconds, and a combined energy of 361 (strong). That’s a proper bump for the beach/jetty setup here. The afternoon holds 6 ft with 310 energy. The caveat? The wind is onshore from the W and WNW at 12 mph, so it’s going to be lumpy and blown out. This is a beach break, and with that size and onshore wind, it’s going to be a battle. It’s also too big for beginners – this one is for experienced surfers only. The crowd is listed as “sometimes” for Tarnos, so you might have some company out there, but it won’t be a circus.
After that, it drops back down. Sunday, July 26 has 4 ft but cross-onshore wind, so messy again. Then we’re back to tiny, weak surf for the rest of the month. There’s a glassy moment on Tuesday morning, July 28, with an ENE wind and 2 ft, but the period is only 5 seconds – barely a ripple.
So, bottom line: the only real window is the 25th. It’s not perfect, but it’s the only game in town. The rest is a long flat spell with a few tiny, choppy scraps. Hang in there.
Rusty.
