The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here, looking at what's on offer for the coming weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you: the next two weeks or so are looking pretty grim for decent waves. We’ve got a long stretch of poor conditions, with a lot of onshore and cross-onshore winds messing up whatever swell is around. The first real glimpse of something worthwhile doesn't pop up until the back end of the forecast.
The water temperature at Tarnos - La Digue is sitting at a very unusual 77°, which is a massive 6° warmer than normal for this time of year. That’s a real talking point—it’s like bathwater out there.
Let’s get into the details. The first couple of days are a write-off with light rain and moderate cross-onshore winds on Thursday the 20th and Friday the 21st, making for poor, choppy surf. The swell energy is moderate (441) on Thursday, but it’s wind-affected. We see a bit of a window on Saturday the 22nd. The morning has a clean offshore breeze from the East, with 4ft swell from the NW. The energy is moderate (269), but the waves are small and the score is only a 2. It’s rideable, but nothing to get excited about. Sunday the 23rd drops right off to 2ft, and from there it’s a long, flat, and choppy run through the end of the month.
There’s a big gap of weak, poor surf until the very end of the forecast. The most promising window (and it’s a long way off) is on Thursday the 4th of September. The morning session is looking glassy, with a light offshore breeze from the NE, and a clean 5ft NW swell. The wave energy is moderate (281). It’s not a big swell, but with glassy conditions and that little bit of period, it’ll be the best clean-up wave we’ve seen in a while. It’s a long way out, so treat it as a promising possibility rather than a certainty.
For now, the standout option is the Saturday 22nd morning session at Tarnos - La Digue. It’s not going to be epic, but with 4ft of NW swell and a clean offshore wind, it’s your best bet for a paddle in the near future.
Rusty.
