The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the table for the next couple of weeks at Tarnos - La Digue.
Right off the bat, we’ve got a bit of a slow start. The first couple of days are tiny, with weak, short-period windswell that’s just not doing the job. The early part of the window is a write-off for anything decent. There’s a noticeable gap of poor-to-non-existent surf from Sunday afternoon, 23 August, right through to the end of the week.
The first real glimmer of hope comes on the morning of Sunday, 30 August. The swell bumps up to a clean 4.3ft from the NW, with a period of 8 seconds. The wind is light and offshore from the ENE, so we’re looking at glassy, clean conditions. The combined energy is moderate at 250. It’s not a monster, but it’s the first proper surfable wave in a while. This morning session is the pick of the early run for beginners or anyone wanting a fun, uncrowded paddle.
But the real standout, the one to circle on the calendar, is the morning of Monday, 7 September. We’ve got a solid 3.6ft NW groundswell with a long, juicy 12-second period. Combined energy hits a strong 452, and it’s arriving with a clean offshore breeze from the E. This is a proper groundswell – longer gaps between sets, more push, and the wave shape will be there. Tarnos - La Digue is a beach/jetty setup, so that long period might make it a bit straight, but with the offshore wind on it, it’ll be clean and fun. That’s your best bet in the whole 16-day window, but it’s a week away, so keep an eye on it.
Beyond that, the second week looks pretty ordinary again, with 1.6ft to 2.3ft dribble and onshore winds ruining any chance of quality. The morning of 6 September has a pulse of 1.6ft NW groundswell (12-second period) and clean offshore wind, but it’s tiny. Still, it’s a sign the ocean is trying.
The water temp is about average for this time of year, so don’t expect any surprises when you get in.
Stay stoked.
