The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you. This isn’t one of those weeks where you’re checking the cam every five minutes. We’re looking at a long, flat, and mostly blown-out stretch ahead. The swell window is pretty much shut, and the wind gods aren’t doing us any favors either. So, manage your expectations, and maybe line up some other plans for the next couple of weeks.

The first bit of the run, from Tuesday the 4th right through the first weekend, is just grim. We’re talking ankle-biters at Surfside, with wave heights stuck around 1.5ft to 2.5ft. The period is short, only 4 to 6 seconds, which means it’s all wind slop and very little push. To make it worse, the wind is cross-onshore or swinging fully onshore, so it will be lumpy and choppy. The combined swell energy is weak, reading between 17 and 48. It’s just not worth paddling out for. That’s a solid four or five days of nothing.

As we head into the middle of next week, the 11th and 12th, the swell stays tiny, still under 2.5ft, and that cross-onshore breeze doesn't let up. The energy readings are still low, hovering in the 20s and 30s. It’s more of the same – poor conditions. There’s a slight bump in the swell and energy on the 13th and 14th, with the energy creeping up into the 50s and 60s, but the wave heights are still only around 2ft to 3ft. The period is still a weak and short 5 seconds. It’s not going to save the week. Beginning Friday the 14th and running through the weekend, the swell pulls up a touch to around 3ft-3.5ft, and the energy starts to feel a little more present. But again, short period and iffy winds will keep the quality low.

Now, for the one small glimmer of hope. On Monday the 17th, in the afternoon, we see the combined energy finally jump into a moderate range, hitting 120. The swell holds around 3ft from the SE with a 7-second period. It’s not a clean groundswell, but it’s something. The wind is onshore though, so expect it to be a bit messy. The following morning, Tuesday the 19th (wait, that's the 19th), we see the energy again tick over 100, at 101, with a light cross-shore wind. The swell is 2.5ft from the SE at 6 seconds. It might be the most surfable window we get, but it's still going to be a struggle. Let's be real, it’s not going to be a barrel feast.

Don’t get too excited about this one. The whole period is plagued by short-period, weak swell. The only standouts are these small bumps in energy on the 17th and 19th, where the swell is slightly bigger and there's a chance of a cleaner window. But even then, we're talking about a marginal day at a beach break. This setup would be far more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer given the persistent onshore flow. It's a tough run. Hang in there.
