The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s talk about Shoreham. We’ve got a long stretch of flat or poor quality ahead. The first real surfable day isn’t until Saturday, July 26th, and even then it’s a struggle. From right now, we’re looking at a solid 10-day gap with nothing worth paddling out for. The early mornings on Thursday and Friday, July 16th and 17th, have tiny 0.3ft waves with clean cross-off winds, but the energy is nothing (2 units), so it’s more of a float than a surf. The whole stretch from July 16th through July 25th is mostly muck: tiny swells, onshore chop, or cross-shore dribble. The combined energy stays in the weak range (under 100) until the end of the month.
The one standout, and it’s a late one, shows up on the morning of Saturday, July 26th. We’ve got a 2ft swell from the WSW with a period of 5 seconds – short period, so it’s not going to have much push. The combined energy is 35 units, still weak, but it’s the best we’ve got. The wind is onshore from the SSE, which is a bummer. That’s going to blow it out. The break itself, Shoreham, is a breakwater setup, inconsistent, and often crowded. It’s not a spot that fires often, so when it does, expect company. The water temp is a much warmer than normal 68°F – that’s over 7 degrees warmer than average for this time of year, which is very unusual. For a beginner, stay away. For an expert, it might be a one-wave novelty.
After that, the afternoon of July 31st sees a notable jump in size: 6ft from the SW with a period of 6 seconds, but the combined energy finally hits 252 units, which is moderate. The wind is a fresh cross-onshore at 19 mph, making it lumpy. That’s a powerful, messy, expert-only day. The rest of the second week is just more of the same: small, weak, and choppy. Honestly, there’s no true standout here. If you’re itching, the 26th morning is your best bet, but don’t expect much. The kite surfers might have a better time on the 31st afternoon.
Rusty.
