The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you. This 16-day window for Poundeers Beach is a tough one. The forecast is showing a long stretch of messy, onshore wind and poor surf conditions, so don’t get your hopes up for any standout sessions. We’re looking at a solid 16 days of the same story, with no real recommendation to paddle out.

The pattern starts on Wednesday, August 5th, and it’s grim. We’ve got a 4ft swell out of the ENE, with a short period of 9 seconds, and cross-on winds from the ENE at 12 mph. The water is sitting at 80°, which is about average for this time of year. The wave energy is moderate at 244, but it’s all chopped up. The wind stays cross-onshore for the entire outlook, with speeds picking up to 22 mph by the second week. This means the surf will be lumpy, choppy, and generally poor for paddling.

There’s no let-up. The swell height does build, hitting 8ft on Saturday, August 15th, with a combined energy of 844, which is a lot of power. But that’s no good to us. It’s too big for beginners, and with the strong cross-on winds, it’s only going to be a messy, blown-out mess for experts. The period is short, around 8 seconds, so it’s not going to have any real shape. With the onshore wind and a beach break setup, this honestly looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.

The swell continues into the 17th, 18th, and 19th of August, with heights around 7ft to 7ft, but the wind stays relentless. The energy remains high, with values in the 400s and 500s, but it’s all junk. The wind finally drops a touch on the 20th to 12 mph, but it’s still cross-on, and the swell is still short and messy.

Bottom line: there’s no good surf in this 16-day window. The wind is the enemy here, and it’s not letting up. Keep the board in the car and check the forecast again later. Things can change.

Rusty.
