The Lowdown

Hey folks, Rusty here. I’ve got some bad news for the Port Stanley area – we’re looking at a full 16‑day stretch with absolutely no surf on offer. Every single morning and afternoon from July 16 through July 31 shows “poor surf conditions,” and there’s not a single wave height, period, or energy reading to work with. That’s a flat spell that covers the entire forecast window.

Now, Port Stanley is normally a consistent spot, exposed to SW swell, and it’s rated well for reliability – so a blank run this long is pretty unusual for the area. But right now, there’s just nothing. The water temperature is sitting at 75°F, which is about 4°F warmer than the long‑term average for July – that’s notably warmer, so if you’re just planning a swim, it’ll feel nice. But for surfing? You’re out of luck.

We do get some glassy or near‑glassy mornings here and there – like Friday July 17 morning with a 3 mph westerly, or the morning of July 31 with a 3 mph ENE breeze – but without any swell, clean conditions don’t matter. Even the occasional offshore or cross‑off wind days won’t produce a ripple worth paddling for.

I hate to say it, but the best advice I can give is to leave the boards at home for now. This kind of prolonged flat spell can happen, but forecasts often change – keep an eye on things, because Port Stanley is too reliable to stay dead forever.

Rusty.
