The Lowdown
Right then, folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what’s on offer for the next couple of weeks.
Straight up, I’m not going to sugar-coat it for ya. The outlook for Papaya (Nahriya) is a tough one. We’ve got a long stretch of tiny, weak surf with choppy conditions, so don’t go getting your hopes up for a decent paddle anytime soon. The first real chance of anything rideable is a long way off, and even then it’s not a standout.
The whole 16-day forecast is a bit of a dud. We are looking at a gap of nearly two weeks of marginal conditions before things might show a glimmer of life. The first record shows a small, weak 2ft swell from the WNW on Sunday the 23rd of August, but it’s crossed up with a cross-on SW wind, giving us poor surf. The combined energy is a measly (22), so barely a ripple. That same story plays out day after day: tiny 1ft to 2ft swells, mostly onshore winds, and very low energy numbers.
There is a slight respite on the morning of Tuesday the 25th of August. We get a glassy 2ft swell from the W, with a period of 6 seconds. The wind is glassy from the WSW, so it’ll be clean as a whistle. But the size is tiny, and the energy is still weak (17). It’s a beginner-friendly wave that morning, but it won’t be world-class. The crowds are listed as ‘sometimes’, so you might have that peak to yourself.
The only real event that might be worth a mention is the morning of Monday the 7th of September. The swell picks up to 3ft from the WNW, with a period of 8 seconds, and the combined energy jumps to a moderate (119). It’s still a bit of a messy cross-on wind from the WSW, though, so it will be choppy and a bit of a battle. For a beginner break, that 3ft swell might be at the top end of the comfort zone, but with the onshore wind, it’s going to be a work-out.
Honestly, if you’re keen on a session, the glassy Tuesday morning on the 25th of August is your best bet for clean, small waves. The rest of the window is a write-off for anything serious. To be fair, the wave energy is consistently weak, so this is more of a kite-surfing setup than a proper paddle session when the wind picks up. The area is known for these quiet spells, so don’t worry too much; forecasts can change, and it won’t stay this flat forever.
Rusty.
