The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cooking for Hakshtot (Ashdod).
Honestly, the next couple of weeks are a real mixed bag, and not in a good way. The immediate outlook is pretty grim. We’ve got a long stretch of flat, weak, and poor-quality surf coming our way. The water’s sitting at a warm 86°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, but that’s about the only positive.
There’s a painful gap of almost no surf at all. From the start of the forecast right through the end of August and into the first week of September, we’re looking at tiny swell, mostly around 1ft to 2ft, with short periods between 5 and 8 seconds. That’s just not enough energy to push anything rideable. The combined wave energy is pitiful, barely scraping into double digits (14 to 28) for most of that time. Winds are mostly onshore or cross-shore, so it’s going to be messy and choppy.
Finally, by Sunday morning the 6th of September, we see a glimmer of hope. A small pulse of swell arrives at 4ft from the WNW with a period of 8 seconds. The combined energy jumps to a moderate 187, which is a big step up from the weeks prior. The kicker is the wind: it’s forecast to be glassy, calm as can be. That will make the waves clean.
Even so, this is only rated as surfable but very ordinary. The swell direction (WNW) is coming from the west, which isn’t the optimum W direction for this exposed spot, so it won’t be breaking at its best. And this break is a beginner-friendly, exposed spot that’s fairly consistent, but this is the only real window. Crowds are often an issue here, so expect company.
Given the tiny swell and poor conditions for most of the period, this Sunday morning on the 6th is the only standout, and it’s a long way out. It’s promising, but keep your expectations in check. If the wind holds, it could be a fun little session for learners, but anyone who’s been around knows not to bank on a long-range glass-off.
Rusty.
