The Lowdown
Right, grab a seat, and let’s talk about what’s on offer. Over the next couple of weeks, Hakshtot in Ashdod is the main spot, and honestly, it’s a mixed bag. We’ve got a lot of small, onshore slop in the early days, but there’s a bit of a pulse building towards the end of the month.
The water’s sitting at 82°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so you’ll be comfortable in boardshorts or a spring suit at most.
For the first week, it’s pretty grim. We’re looking at small, weak swells with a lot of onshore wind. The best we’ve got is a brief window on Thursday morning, the 16th of July. It’s a glassy morning with light winds, and the swell is a tiny 3 ft from the WNW with a period of 8 seconds. The combined energy is a weak 103, so it’s barely breaking. It’s surfable, but you’ll be working for every little wave. Crowds are often here, so expect company even for these scraps.
The following days are a write-off with onshore winds and even smaller swell, barely a ripple. From the 17th right through to the 23rd of July, it’s a long gap of poor surf conditions. Honestly, don’t bother.
Now, the standout is the morning of Sunday, the 26th of July. That’s the one to circle. We’ve got a clean, cross-offshore wind from the SSW at 6 mph, making for some nice, clean faces. The swell is a more respectable 5 ft from the WNW with a 9-second period, and the combined energy jumps to a moderate 398. It’s still not a huge swell, but it’s the best of the whole run. The wind direction is offshore, which is a major positive. This will be a fun, clean session for a beginner-friendly spot, though the 5 ft swell is getting towards the top end for absolute beginners. It won’t be too big for anyone with a bit of experience. Keep in mind the optimum swell direction is W, and this is coming from the WNW, so it’s a little off the ideal, but still good.
The afternoon of the same day gets ruined by onshore wind, so get on it early. The last few days of the forecast trail off again into small, poor conditions.
So, the only real chance to get a decent wave is the morning of the 26th of July. It’s a promising call, but it’s a week and a half away, so keep an eye on the charts. For now, that’s the tip.
Rusty.
