The Lowdown

Alright, let’s get real. I’ve looked at the run of surf ahead for Dosim Beach, and I’ve got to be straight with you — it’s a tough stretch. The swell is small, short-period, and the wind is almost always cross or onshore, which is just not doing this place any favours. We’re talking about a beach that’s inconsistent at the best of times, and this forecast window is a real test of patience.

The first sign of anything rideable shows up on Sunday the 16th. The morning sees a tiny 3ft swell from the WNW, with a period of only 8 seconds, and the wind is a light cross-onshore from the WSW. The combined wave energy is moderate, sitting at 113, but with the short period and the wind, it’s marginal. You’d be fighting for scraps. The afternoon goes onshore and gets choppy.

Monday the 17th is much the same — 4ft from the WNW, period still 8 seconds, but the wind is cross-onshore in the morning and onshore in the afternoon. It’s messy and poor. The energy is moderate (146 and 128), but the quality just isn’t there.

The one brief moment that might catch your eye is the morning of Wednesday the 19th. The swell drops to 2ft from the WNW, period just 6 seconds, but the wind goes glassy. That’s a major positive — clean conditions. However, the energy is weak (35), and the swell is tiny. It’s a small, clean wave for a longboard or a foiler, but don’t expect much push.

From there, the size drops off a cliff. The rest of the forecast through to the end of August is dominated by swells under 3ft, with periods of 4 to 7 seconds, and energy readings that are mostly two-digit (weak). The wind is almost always cross or onshore, with a few rare moments of light cross-shore. The swell direction is consistently from the WNW, which is close to the optimum for Dosim Beach (WSW), but the size and period just aren’t there.

By the time we get to the last week of August, the swell is barely 1ft to 2ft, with periods of 5 to 7 seconds, and energy is laughably low — 10 to 34. The wind is still mostly cross or onshore. There’s no standout day, no magic window. The best you can hope for is a clean, tiny session on that Wednesday morning, but it’s a long shot.

To be honest, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing, given the consistent but light wind and small, weak waves.

So, the verdict: there’s no real quality surf on offer in this 16-day window. Dosim Beach is inconsistent at the best of times, and this run is a blank stretch. It’s disappointing, but it happens. The winds and swell just aren’t lining up. Keep your eyes on the forecasts — things can change fast.

Stay frothy,
Rusty
