The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s on tap.
Honestly, mate, the next couple of weeks are looking pretty quiet for Dosim Beach. The water’s a touch warmer than usual for this time of year, sitting at 85°, which is nice, but that’s about the only thing to get excited about. The swell is tiny and weak, with a combined energy that barely gets into double digits. We’re talking a 1ft to 3ft wind swell from the WNW, with a short period of 6 to 7 seconds. That’s not giving us any shape or push.
The first real shot at something rideable doesn’t show up until Thursday morning, August 20th, and even then it’s just a marginal call. The swell is still only 3ft from the WNW, but the period does bump up to 8 seconds, and the wind is light onshore from the NW. The combined energy is just 73. It’s barely worth paddling out for, but if you’re desperate, it’s the best of a very poor bunch.
Before that, the whole first week and a half is a write-off. Day after day of poor surf conditions, with cross-shore and onshore winds that mess up what little rideable surface there is. There’s a brief moment on Monday morning, August 10th, where the wind goes glassy from the NW, but the swell is only 2ft and the combined energy is a paltry 31. It’s flat, mate.
The most promising window, and I use that term loosely, is the morning of Wednesday, August 19th, and the morning of Thursday, August 20th. On Wednesday morning, the swell reaches 4ft from the NW, with a period of 7 seconds. The combined energy hits 106, which is the highest we see. The wind is a light cross-shore from the SSW. That’s the stand-out, but it’s still a small, short-period wind swell. The break is inconsistent, and crowds are guaranteed. Don’t expect much.
From the afternoon of the 20th on, it fades again. The 21st of August morning has a marginal 2ft swell with a light cross-on wind, but it’s nothing to write home about.
So, the only true standout is the morning of Wednesday, August 19th, at Dosim Beach. It’s the biggest swell we’ll see, with the best wind direction, but it’s still a beginner-friendly size. Get in early, because the crowds will be there.
Rusty.
