The Lowdown

G’day, I’m Rusty. Let’s have a look at what’s happening for the next couple of weeks.

Alright mate, I’ll be straight with you—this run is looking pretty bleak. The models are showing a long stretch of tiny, weak swell and mostly onshore or messy winds. Don’t go getting your hopes up too early. There’s practically nothing worth paddling out for until the second week, and even then, it’s only just scraping into the marginal category.

The only spot we’ve got to talk about is Dosim Beach. It’s a beginner-friendly beach break, exposed to the swell, but it’s inconsistent and it’s always crowded. So don’t expect solitude. The water temperature is sitting at 86°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year—you’ll be in boardies, no worries.

Now, from the start of the forecast on Monday 24th August right through to the end of August, it’s a sad story. Swell heights are tiny, mostly 1ft to 3ft, with a short period of 6 or 7 seconds. Combined swell energy is weak—well under 100 (18 to 80 range). The winds are mostly onshore or cross-onshore from the WNW or cross-shore from the SW, so the surface is chopped up or at best has small ripples. The wave comment is “poor surf conditions” across the board, with scores of 0/10. Honestly, you’d be better off doing something else.

Moving into the first week of September, 1st to 6th, nothing changes. The same tiny swell—0.7ft to 2ft—and short period, with only a few mornings showing glassy conditions (like Tuesday 1st morning, Friday 4th morning, Saturday 5th morning, and Sunday 6th morning). Even then, the swells are so small and weak (combined energy 8 to 35) that it’s barely rideable. The comment remains “poor surf conditions” or the occasional “marginal” rating. It’s a long, boring gap of about 10 days with no real surf on offer.

The best chance—and I use that word loosely—pops up on Monday 7th September. Monday morning sees a 4ft swell from the WNW, period 7 seconds, and combined energy jumps to 125 (moderate energy). The wind is light cross-shore from the SW, which is okay. Still, the wave comment is “poor surf conditions” and the score is 0/10, so it’s not exactly a standout. Monday afternoon bumps up to 4ft, period 8 seconds, and combined energy of 168, but that’s accompanied by a 12 mph onshore wind from the WNW, making it messy. For a beginner break, 4ft to 4ft is getting towards the upper end of comfortable, but it’s still not great quality.

The rest of the 16-day window, into Tuesday 8th September, drops back to 3ft with weak energy and onshore winds. So, the only day that even raises an eyebrow is Monday 7th September—and that’s a stretch. If you’re a beginner and you’re desperate, you might get a few small, weak waves on the morning of the 7th, but don’t expect much. For the rest of us, it’s a write-off.

Keep an eye on the charts, though—it tends not to stay this flat forever. Forecasts can change.

Rusty.
