The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s talk about the local surf scene.
First up, the water is sitting at about 84°F – that’s a touch warmer than what we’d expect for this time of year, so it’s a nice bath to be in while you’re waiting for a wave.
Right, the honest truth: the next 16 days look pretty grim for anything you’d want to call a proper surf. We’re looking at a long stretch of minimal to no real swell. The first few days of the forecast are a total write-off with poor surf conditions and a combined wave energy that’s barely a whisper – values like 36 (weak), 40 (weak), down to 15 (weak) for the 29th of July. It’s mostly small, weak, short-period windswell from the NW, with cross-onshore winds chopping everything up. The wind does go glassy a few times, like Tuesday morning the 28th of July, but the swell is just too small and weak to do anything with.
The only real crack at something surfable comes on Thursday morning, the 30th of July. The wind turns glassy, and the swell bumps up to 3 ft from the NW with a period of 7 seconds. The combined energy climbs to 79 (weak), but it’s still in the “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions” category. That’s the best of a bad bunch, but I wouldn’t be rushing to get wet.
After that, the wave energy drops off a cliff. We’re looking at 2 ft to 2 ft stuff with horrible cross-onshore winds for the rest of the first week. Into the second week, it gets even worse – from the 8th of August onwards, the swell energy is a pathetic 15 (weak), 7 (weak), and even 1 (weak) by the 10th of August. Thursday the 12th of August shows a little bump in energy to 89 (weak) with a 3 ft swell, but it’s accompanied by a moderate cross-onshore wind, so it’s still not worth a paddle.
To be blunt, there’s no standout session here. The best on offer is the tiny window of glassy conditions on Thursday morning, the 30th of July, with a 3 ft NW swell, but it’s a real stretch to call it a highlight. This is a proper blank run for the area, and while it tends not to stay this poor forever, this forecast is a washout. If you’re desperate for a splash, the 30th of July morning is your only shot.
Rusty.
