The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you about this stretch of coast. We’ve got one spot in the mix, and honestly, the outlook is a quiet one for a while.
Right now, into the middle of July, the surf is flat and messy. For the first few days, we’re looking at tiny, weak waves with cross-onshore winds and very low energy (72 down to 30). The combined energy is weak, with values mostly under 100. There’s nothing to get excited about. The water temperature feels about average for the time of year, so no surprises there.
We drift through a pretty long gap with no real surf on offer. The mornings on the 18th and 19th of July will be glassy and clean, but the swell is tiny – around 2ft – and the energy is almost nothing (30-33). It’s a flat spell, plain and simple.
The only real change comes late in the window. Around the 24th and 25th of July, we start to see some life. The combined energy jumps up to 389 on the 24th afternoon and then 586 on the morning of the 25th, which is moderate wave energy. The swell builds to 5ft-6ft from the WNW with a period of 9-10 seconds. That’s better shaped, with more energy between sets. However, the wind is still cross-onshore or onshore, so it’s going to be a bit of a battle. This is for experienced surfers only, as the size is over 5ft.
The standout for the whole period would be the morning of the 25th of July. The swell is 6ft from the WNW, and while the wind is cross-onshore, the raw power is there. The energy reading (586) is the highest we’ll see. It’s not going to be perfect, but it’s the only pulse of proper swell in the entire run. After that, it drops back down quickly.
So, to sum it up: a lot of flat days, then a brief, punchy window around the 25th. If you’re desperate for a paddle, that’s your best bet, but don’t expect a clean, glassy day.
Rusty.
