The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the menu for the next couple of weeks.
To be straight with you, the next week and a half is looking pretty flat and messy. From this Saturday morning right through until Friday the 14th of August, the swell is tiny and the wind is mostly a problem. We’re looking at a whole lot of poor surf conditions, with combined wave energy barely getting into the double digits most days – we’re talking 86 (weak) at best early on, dropping to 9 (weak) by the 12th. That’s a long, quiet stretch. The water temp is sitting at 84°F on Saturday morning, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so that’s a small comfort while you wait.
Now, the real story starts to change around Friday the 14th of August. We finally see a pulse of energy coming through. The swell bumps up to 3 ft from the WNW with a period of 8 seconds, and the combined energy jumps to 105 (moderate) on Friday morning and 122 (moderate) in the afternoon. That’s the most promising window in the whole 16 days. The downside is the wind is onshore, so it’s gonna be a bit bumpy, but for the first time in ages there’s actually some push behind the waves. It’s not a standout, but it’s the best we’ve got.
For the best chance of a wave, head to Hof gil (Ashdod) or Hof Hadromi. This spot is a sandbar, fairly consistent, and exposed to the west – which is what we want for this WNW swell. The optimum swell direction is from the west, so this is a good match. The wind on Friday morning is from the WSW at 12 mph and onshore, so it’ll be a bit choppy, but the energy is there.
If you’re a beginner, the swell is under 5 ft, so it’s manageable, but the onshore wind will make it tricky. For experienced surfers, it’s worth a look on Friday the 14th.
Honestly, if you’re after a paddle, this is a lean stretch. The setup might actually be more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing on those days with bigger swell and onshore wind.
Keep an eye on the forecast, but for now, the 14th is your best bet.
Rusty.
