The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty. I've had a proper look at what’s on the cards for the local stretch, and if you’re on the south coast here at Hof gil (Ashdod) or Hof Hadromi, I gotta be straight with you – it’s a tough run ahead.
Right now, the water is sitting at a very warm 86°F, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year. But that’s about the only thing that’s working in our favour.
We’re looking at a long, flat spell to kick things off. From today through the end of the month, the swell is tiny and weak. Wave heights are barely cracking 2ft to 2ft out of the WNW with a short, weak period of just 6 to 7 seconds. The combined energy is scrappy – you’re looking at readings around 19 to 40 – that’s really weak stuff. A couple of mornings like Monday the 24th and Tuesday the 25th have glassy conditions, which is a tease, but with that tiny swell, there's just nothing to ride. Afternoons get chopped up by a NW cross-onshore breeze, making it a complete no-go.
We finally see a tiny bump on the 30th of August. That Sunday morning actually goes glassy, with the swell nicking up to 3ft from the WNW at 8 seconds. The combined energy hits 112 – moderate, but barely. The wave comment even says “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions.” This is the best we’ve got, but it’s not saying much. For a beginner, that tiny size is fine, but the quality just isn’t there. After that, it’s right back to tiny, weak, and choppy for the first week of September.
The swell direction is always WNW to NW, but this spot, being a sandbar, is exposed to the W – so it's never really lining up perfectly. The wind is consistently a problem, mostly from the NW, which puts us in a cross-onshore or onshore position. Even the cleaner morning windows have tiny swell that can't overcome the afternoon chop.
This is a long stretch of poor conditions. The highlight – and I use that word lightly – is the glassy window on Sunday morning the 30th of August. It’s the only time the stars nearly align, with that small 3ft WNW swell and no wind. If you’re desperate, that’s your window. Otherwise, this setup honestly looks more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer, especially on the windy afternoons when the swell picks up a bit.
So, keep the board waxed but don’t hold your breath. The forecasts can change, and it won’t stay this flat forever, but for now, it’s a waiting game.
Rusty.
