The Lowdown
Alright, let’s break it down. Water’s sitting at 82°, which is a touch warmer than usual for July, but that’s the only bright spot for a while. We’ve got a long stretch of flat, messy days ahead. The first real chance to get wet comes on Thursday the 16th in the morning, but it’s small.
That Thursday morning at Hofgil (Ashdod) or Hof Hadromi, we’re looking at a 3ft swell from the west-northwest, with a 8-second period. The wind goes glassy – dead calm, clean as a whistle. The combined energy is moderate at 103, so it’s not powerful, but for a beginner-friendly sandbar, this is about as good as it gets in this flat spell. The swell direction is close to the optimum west, so it’ll wrap in okay. Tiny waves, but clean.
After that, it’s a slog. The 17th and 18th are tiny and choppy, with swells dropping to 2ft and cross-onshore winds. There’s a glassy window on Saturday morning the 18th, but the swell is too small to bother. From the 19th through the 23rd, it’s a write-off – poor conditions, small waves, and onshore breezes. Stay home.
Then, late in the second week, we get a bit of a pulse. On Thursday the 24th in the morning, the swell bumps up to 4ft from the west-northwest, with an 8-second period and an onshore wind from the west-southwest at 6 mph. The energy hits 243, which is moderate, but the wind is onshore, so it’ll be a bit bumpy. It’s the most size we’ve seen in a while. The 25th Saturday morning is similar – 5ft, same direction, but cross-onshore wind again.
The standout, if you can call it that, is the morning of Sunday the 26th. Swell hits 5ft from the west-northwest, period 9 seconds, and the energy is a solid 398. The wind is cross-onshore from the south-southwest at 6 mph. At 5ft, it’s getting a bit much for beginners, but intermediate surfers might find something on the sandbanks if the wind doesn’t ruin it. The optimum swell direction is west, and we’re close enough from the west-northwest.
Honestly, it’s a tough run. The first week is flat and choppy, the second week shows a bit of a pulse, but the winds are rarely kind. If you’re keen, the mornings on the 24th, 25th, and 26th are your best bets, but don’t expect perfection.
