The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get straight into it.
Look, I’ll be honest with you – the forecast for the next couple of weeks here is a tough pill to swallow. We’re looking at a long stretch with barely a ripple, especially if you’re hoping for anything with real push.
Right now, starting on Sunday 30th August, we’ve got a brief pulse of swell, but it’s a bit of a tease. On Sunday morning at Hof gil (Ashdod) or Hof Hadromi, there’s a 5ft west-northwest swell running, but the period is a short 8 seconds. The wind is onshore from the west-northwest at 9 mph, so it’s going to be messy. The combined energy is moderate at 322, but the conditions are described as marginal. The water temperature is a toasty 86°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year.
That Sunday window is your only real shout in the first week, and even then, it’s not good. After that, we drop off a cliff. From Monday 31st August all the way through to Monday 14th September, the swell hovers between a pathetic 1ft and 4ft. The winds are mostly onshore or cross-onshore, ruining the tiny waves that do show up. The energy readings are weak, mostly in the double digits to low triple digits.
There are a few glassy mornings—like Thursday 3rd September morning and Sunday 6th September morning—but with waves only 2ft to 2ft, you’d be struggling to get a ride. The period on those days is just 6 to 7 seconds, so it’s all weak, windswell stuff.
The only minor glimmer comes on Tuesday 8th September morning with a glassy, calm 3ft west-northwest swell (period 7 seconds) and then that afternoon the swell jumps to 3ft with a longer period of 10 seconds and energy of 193. But the wind swings onshore again, ruining it for surfing. The next morning, Wednesday 9th September, sees a small 2ft northwest swell with clean cross-offshore wind from the north-northeast at 9 mph, and an energy of 105. But that’s still tiny by any decent standard.
The standout – if you are desperate, the Sunday 30th August morning session is the only window with a bit of size, but be prepared for onshore chop and a crowd, as this spot is often busy. It’s more of a beginner-friendly 5ft, so not a heavy-duty day.
Realistically, for most of the 16 days, there is next to nothing. The setup here, with these small, weak swells and frequent onshore winds, looks more interesting for a kite session than a paddle surf. It’s a poor run, and forecasts will need to change big time to get any quality.
Stay patient.
Rusty.
