The Lowdown

Alright, grab your board shorts and let’s talk about what’s happening. The short version is, it’s flat. Real flat. We’ve got a long stretch of small, weak, and messy conditions ahead. There are a few moments that might get you out there for a splash, but don’t expect any hero waves. We’re looking at a solid week or more of this before anything even remotely fun shows up.

For the next few days, through the end of August and into the start of September, it’s all about tiny, short-period leftovers. We’re talking knee-high slop with swell energy reading in the low double digits to just over a hundred, which is weak to barely moderate. The water is warm, around 85°F, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so you won’t need a thick suit. The wind is mostly onshore or cross-onshore, which will chop up anything that tries to break. Thursday the 27th has basically nothing, and Friday the 28th is glassy in the morning but still only 1ft of weak, 6-second swell – not worth the paddle. The weekend gets a little bump, especially Sunday the 30th, where we see the biggest swell of the period at 6ft. But the period is only 8 seconds and the wind is howling onshore at 16 mph. That’s a messy, blown-out mess at Hofgil (Ashdod). The combined energy does jump to 460, which is strong, but it’s just going to be a washing machine. Too big and ugly for the beginners, and not clean enough for anyone else to get too excited. This looks more interesting for the kite crew than us paddle surfers.

We finally get a small window of opportunity on Monday morning, the 31st of August. Swell drops to a cleaner 4ft from the NW, and the energy is still moderate at 147. It’s still cross-onshore, but the wind is light, and the report calls it “marginal.” This is your best bet for a few grovelly ones if you’re desperate. Then Tuesday the 1st of September morning has a cross-offshore breeze which is a big positive, but the swell drops back down to 3ft. It’s clean but small.

After that, the 16-day forecast just fades away. From the 2nd of September all the way through to the 11th, we’re looking at consistent but tiny, weak swell, never getting above 2ft. There are a few glassy mornings – like the 5th, 6th, and 7th of September – but the waves are just too small and weak to be worth the effort. The energy values are mostly in the teens and twenties, which is weak. We’ll see those 5 and 6 second periods, which just means fat, crumbly nothing. It’s a long, flat spell, more normal for this time of year, and it’s going to take a big change in the weather pattern to get any real swell moving. Forecasts can change, and we’re known for a surprise, so keep an eye on the charts, but don’t hold your breath.

So, if you’ve got a longboard and low expectations, Monday morning is your best shout. Otherwise, this is a great week to fix your dings and work on your pop-up on the lawn.
