The Lowdown
Alright, let’s cut to the chase. For the next week and a half, it’s mostly gonna be a lake out there. We’re looking at a serious flat spell, with tiny, weak swells and not enough energy to push a sea lion off a rock. The combined energy numbers are in the teens and twenties, which is basically nothing. And to add insult to injury, most afternoons the wind is gonna be on it, making a mess of things. It’s going to be a lot of checking the cam and shaking your head.
That said, there is one little window that stands out, and that’s Wednesday, the 16th. The morning looks like a proper glass-off, with a slight NNE breeze. We’re talking about a clean 0.8ft of WNW swell. The period is a short 7 seconds, so it won't have much grunt, but it's surfable. That’s your best bet for a few knee to waist-high rollers. The wave energy is still modest, at 66, but it’s clean and it’s rideable. Thursday morning, the 17th, looks similar too, with a glassy start and the same size swell, though the period is still short. The wind is looking slightly more cross-off, which is a bonus.
As for the water temp, when we talk about this first window at Hofgil, there’s no big anomaly, so the water is just about average for this time of year. No dramas there.
After that, it dries up again. We get back into the messy cross-onshore chop and generally poor conditions. There is a potential pulse showing up around the 24th, with a bigger 3-4ft of swell and a much longer 11-second period, and the energy jumps to 291. But that’s a long way out, so call it promising but not set in stone. The wind is also looking a bit light and cross-onshore, so it might not be perfect.
So, bottom line: If you can, be in the water early on Wednesday the 16th. Thursday morning is also a shot. It’s not going to be a classic, but it’s the best on offer. Don’t get your hopes up for the rest of the week, and keep an eye on that bigger swell around the 24th.
