The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty. Let me be straight with you – the surf forecast for the next two weeks around here is looking pretty grim. There’s nothing in the pipeline that screams “go time,” so don’t get your hopes up. Most of the window is filled with small, weak swell and cross-onshore winds messing things up for paddle surfing.
On Monday, 17 August, you might be tempted by the early morning. We’ve got a tiny 3ft swell out of the northwest with a short 7-second period, and the combined energy is weak at only 79. The water is sitting at 86°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year. The wind is light and offshore from the west-northwest at 3 mph, so it’s clean, but honestly, the waves are just too weak to get excited about. By afternoon, the wind picks up from the same direction at 12 mph, turning cross-onshore and making it choppy – poor surf.
Tuesday morning, 18 August, shapes up as the only real bright spot. The swell drops to 3ft, but look, the wind goes glassy from the west-southwest at just 3 mph. That’s rare for this break. The waves are clean and surfable, just tiny. It’s a beginner-level day with very ordinary conditions, but if you’ve got a foamie and need a paddle, that’s your window. It won’t last – the afternoon goes cross-onshore and choppy again.
After that, we hit a long, ugly stretch. From Wednesday, 19 August, all the way through to Saturday, 29 August, it’s nearly all poor surf with cross-onshore winds, tiny swell under 3ft, and periods dropping to 5 or even 3 seconds. The combined energy values are mostly in the teens or low 20s – that’s barely a ripple. Don’t bother.
Finally, on Saturday morning, 29 August, there’s a slight pulse of energy. The swell picks up to 4ft from the west-northwest with a period of 8 seconds, and the combined energy jumps to 169 – moderate wave energy. But the wind is cross-onshore again from the southwest at 6 mph, which will put a light chop on the face. It’s still marginal, but for this stretch, it’s the closest thing to a wave you’ll see. Sunday, 30 August, is a step back down to 3ft and 93 energy.
Overall, if you’re committed to paddle surfing, the Tuesday morning glass-off is your best bet. For the rest, you’re better off with a longboard and zero expectations. This setup looks way more interesting for kite surfing than anything else.
Rusty.
