The Lowdown
Alright, let’s be straight with you. It’s a pretty flat and frustrating stretch ahead for the Hofgil zone. We’re looking at a real dry spell for the next week and a half, so if you’re jonesing for a wave, you might want to find another hobby for a bit.
The first few days, from Thursday the 6th right through to the middle of next week, are basically a write-off. We’ve got tiny, weak swells coming in from the west-northwest with short, crumbly periods of 6 to 7 seconds. The energy is feeble, with combined readings mostly in the teens and twenties, and even when it bumps up to the 40s and 50s, it’s still just poor surf. The wind is almost always cross-onshore or onshore, which just adds insult to injury, chopping up what little bump there is. Thursday and Friday mornings might have a light breeze, but there’s nothing behind it to push. You’d be paddling for nothing.
The weekend of the 9th and 10th doesn’t offer any hope either. Saturday’s swell pushes the period to a still-small 7 seconds, but the wind stays messy. Sunday the 10th has one moment of pure glass in the morning, with no wind and a clean surface, but the swell is only 1ft to 2ft with that weak 6-7 second period. It’s a beautiful lineup for a swim, not for a surf. The energy is just pathetic.
We’ll see a little bump in size around Monday the 17th, when the swell finally gets over the 4ft mark. The period also stretches to 8 seconds, and the combined energy jumps into the triple digits (161). It’s a change, but it’s not a savior. The wind is still junk, blowing onshore or cross-onshore, turning that 4ft into a choppy mess. This is still a poor surf day, just a slightly bigger poor surf day.
Honestly, looking at the whole 16-day window, there are zero good surf options. Not one. The conditions are just persistently poor. This is a stretch where it’s better to store the board and wait for a proper change in the weather pattern. Forecasts can change, and with a spot that’s fairly consistent, it usually doesn’t stay this flat for too long. But you’d need a serious injection of west swell and some better wind to make it worth the paddle out at Hofgil. Keep the faith, but don’t hold your breath.
Rusty.
