The Lowdown
Alright, let’s level with you about this local break. This is Hof gil (Ashdod) or Hof Hadromi – a sandbar setup that’s wide open to the west. Water temp is running about 84°F, which is a touch warmer than usual for this time of year, so it’s warm bath conditions.
The next 16 days are pretty grim, honestly. We’ve got a long stretch of small, weak, and choppy surf. The combined swell energy barely breaks into triple digits on a couple of days – mostly hanging in the weak range (values like 56, 94, 287 at the peak). The swell comes consistently from the WNW to NW, not the ideal W direction for this spot, and the periods are short – between 5 and 9 seconds – so it’s mostly windswell, no real push.
Your first real chance to paddle out without regretting it comes on Monday, July 27th in the morning. There’s a little 4ft WNW swell at 8 seconds, but the wind is a light cross-offshore from the NNE at just 6 mph, so it’s clean. Combined energy is weak at 175, and the report says “surfable but very ordinary.” Still, compared to the rest, that’s the pick of the first week.
Then on Tuesday, July 28th morning, it drops to 2ft WNW swell at 7 seconds, but the wind goes glassy – dead calm from the NW. Energy is only 43, so it’s tiny and weak, but if you’ve got a longboard and want perfect, clean water, that’s your window. Everything else is either onshore, small, or both.
From July 31st onward, it’s a washout. Swell stays under 3ft, periods stay short (5-8 seconds), and combined energy is consistently below 70. Every session is called “poor surf conditions” or “marginal.” There’s a glassy morning on August 8th Saturday, but with only 1ft and a 6-second period, you’re barely gliding.
The standout – and I’m stretching here – is Monday morning, July 27th. That’s the only time the wind cleans up enough to make the most of what little swell is running. For a sandbar facing west with short period swell, you’re not getting any power.
No big swell, no long period groundswell, nothing to get excited about. This is a dry spell, and for this area, that's pretty normal. It won’t stay this flat forever, but for now, leave the board at home.
Stay patient,
Rusty
