The Lowdown

Right, let's have a look at what's on the table for the next couple of weeks for the Hofgil (Ashdod) stretch.

It's a bit of a flat spell, to be honest. We're looking at a solid run of small, weak swell and tricky winds for the next week or so. The first real whisper of anything surfable doesn't come around until Friday the 28th of August.

The Full Run Down

Right now, and for most of this week, it's pretty much a write-off. The swell is tiny, well under 2ft, and the period is short, around 4-6 seconds. The energy is just not there – we're talking combined readings of 6 to 18, that's weak stuff. The winds are mostly cross-onshore from the north-west, making for choppy, messy conditions. There are a few glassy moments early in the mornings, but with nothing behind them, it’s just flat, clean water.

This quiet spell stretches out for several days. The first time the numbers look like they might wake up is on the morning of Friday the 28th. We'll see a tiny bump in swell, pushing 2ft from the WNW, with the period stretching to 7 seconds. The combined energy climbs to 40 – still weak but the best we've seen. It’s a marginal call, though, with light cross-onshore wind. It's not going to be pretty, but it's something to paddle for if you're desperate.

The weekend of the 29th and 30th of August offers the best chance in the whole outlook. Saturday morning, the 29th, looks like the pick. The swell holds around 3ft from the WNW, with an 8-second period. The combined energy hits 74, still moderate, but the standout is the wind: glassy, dead calm. It'll be clean, but with such small swell and that short period, it's going to be slow and weak. It’s a beginner's playground, but nothing to get excited about. The afternoons get chopped up by the NW sea breeze again. Sunday morning (the 30th) is also glassy and similar in size (2ft, 8 seconds), so another small window of clean but tiny waves.

After that, the energy fades again. Monday the 31st has a glassy morning, but the swell drops to 2ft. From Tuesday the 1st of September right through to the end of the outlook on the 5th, we're back to small, weak, cross-onshore slop. The glassy mornings return on the 3rd and 4th of September, but with the swell barely ticking over at 1-2ft and a period of 5-6 seconds, it’s just flat.

The Verdict

There's no real standout here, just a couple of mornings that are less bad than the rest. If you're a beginner and just want to get wet in clean water with tiny waves, the glassy morning of Saturday the 29th of August is your best bet. The swell direction is from the WNW, which is a bit off from the optimum W for this spot, so it won't be firing in its best shape. For anyone else, it's a waiting game.

A Note on the Water

The water is currently a balmy 86°, which is a good 4° warmer than normal for this time of year. So it's notably warm, at least.
