The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – the outlook for the next 16 days at Hof gil (Ashdod) or Hof Hadromi is a tough one. We’re looking at a long stretch of small, weak surf with lousy winds, and frankly, there’s not a single day that stands out as a good bet for a proper paddle. The water temp is at 85°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so you’ll be warm even if you’re not getting any good waves.
The pattern starts on Wednesday the 5th of August and it’s a real bummer. We’ve got a tiny 2ft swell from the WNW with a short period of 6 seconds, and the combined energy is a weak 26 (low energy). The cross-on wind from the NW at 12 mph is just chopping it all up. The whole first week is like this – tiny swell, never more than 3ft, and the wind is almost always a cross-on or onshore breeze, making the conditions poor. The combined energy barely reaches 59 (weak) on the 9th of August, and even then the wind is messy.
There’s a couple of moments where the wind goes glassy – on the morning of Monday the 10th of August, we have a glassy surface with a 2ft WNW swell, but the period is still a short 6 seconds and the energy is just 35 (weak). The spot is a sandbar and fairly consistent, but the swell is just too small and weak to do anything with. The calm conditions on the 11th of August morning are even worse, with only 1ft swell. These are not the kind of days you’d drive for.
The second week doesn’t get any better. Through the 14th to the 20th of August, the swell stays below 3ft, with periods stuck at 6 to 8 seconds. The wind is consistently cross-on or onshore, with speeds up to 16 mph. The combined energy peaks at a very modest 85 (weak) on the 15th of August, but that’s with a moderate cross-on breeze. The surf is just poor throughout.
There is no standout day. The best you could hope for is a session on the 13th of August morning when the wind turns light and cross-off, giving clean conditions on a 2ft WNW swell. But the energy is only 26 (weak), so it’s a longboarder’s micro-session at best. For everyone else, this is a blank run. This area often sees these weak, wind-affected stretches, so it’s not a huge surprise. The setup with the wind and small chop might be more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
Keep an eye on the forecasts though – it tends not to stay this poor for long.
Rusty.
