The Lowdown

G’day, it’s Rusty here.

Honestly, looking at the next couple of weeks, it’s a pretty flat and quiet stretch for Dabush. The finder is coming up with nothing on the board for a long time, and the guidance backs that up. We’re looking at a real dry spell with no good surf options in the 16-day window. The swell is tiny, the periods are short, and most of the time the wind is junk. It’s one of those blank runs that happens in this area, so don’t hold your breath.

The first week is basically a write-off. From Tuesday the 4th right through to the following Monday, it’s all poor surf conditions. Wave heights are stuck between 1ft and 3ft, with periods of just 5 to 7 seconds. That’s weak, short-period windswell, not anything with push. The energy numbers are all in the low double digits to the 60s, which tells you it’s barely moving. The wind is mostly onshore or cross-onshore, with a few cross-shore breezes, so the surface is going to be messy and lumpy. Even the two glassy spells on the morning of Tuesday the 11th and Wednesday the 19th can’t save it, because the swell is just too small to matter.

There’s a little uptick in size around the 14th and 15th, but it’s still poor quality. We see the swell bump to 3ft to 3ft, and the energy climbs into the 50s, but the wind is howling from the west and west-southwest at 12 to 15 mph, making it choppy and blown out. This isn’t a surf window; it’s a wind-swept lump. For a beach setup like this, those conditions look a lot more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.

The only time the forecast even mentions “surfable” is on the morning of Wednesday the 19th, and that’s just a very ordinary 3ft with a 6-second period. The wind is glassy at 0 mph, which is a big positive for cleanliness, but the swell is still weak and the period is short. It’s a small, slow, close-out wave at best. The energy is only 49, so it’s weak. There’s no real punch to it.

So, the long and short of it is: keep the board in the car, but don’t get your hopes up. The forecast is a flat, poor run. It’s the kind of stretch that tends to not last forever, and forecasts can change, but for now, there’s nothing worth paddling out for. Dabush is a fairly consistent spot, so when this pattern shifts, it might come back, but right now, it’s a waiting game.

Rusty.
