The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here again. Let’s break it down the old way.
We’re staring at a dry spell at Bagira Beach. From Thursday the 6th right through to the 20th of August, the morning reports are all the same: tiny waves, nasty conditions, and a score of zero. The swell is small, maybe 3 feet at best, coming from the WNW with a short period of 6 to 7 seconds. The combined swell energy is weak, between 15 and 75 (weak energy). The wind is a mess – mostly cross-shore or onshore, making the water choppy and bumpy. For a beach break like this, it’s no good. The water is a touch warmer than normal at 84.9°F, about 3.1°F above average, which is fine for a swim, but not for surfing.
There’s a quick tease on the morning of Monday the 10th of August: glassy conditions with a light north-west wind, but the swell is only 2 feet with a 6-second period. The energy is still just 31 (weak). It’s surfable, but it’s so small and weak it’s a waste of time. Same again on Tuesday the 11th – glassy, but only 1.3 feet of surf. It looks good, but there’s nothing to ride.
The only real hope is a long way off. The only day that gets a score of 1 is the morning of Thursday the 21st of August. The swell picks up a little to 3.6 feet from the NW, with a period of 7 seconds. The combined energy finally hits 106 (moderate wave energy). The wind is light from the SSW, creating a light cross-shore with small ripples. It’s the best of a bad bunch, but it’s still a 1 out of 10 for surfable waves – just very ordinary. The crowd profile at Bagira is “sometimes,” so you might have the place to yourself, but that’s because there’s nothing to compete for.
So, the story is the same: a long, painful gap of nearly two weeks with no real surf. The 21st of August is the only standout, and it’s a weak one. Conditions are poor for months, and then we get a tiny window. Don’t hold your breath. This is a tough stretch for Bagira Beach.
