The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let me give you the straight story for Hof Maravi.
First thing you need to know is, it’s pretty grim. Looking at the whole 16-day run, there’s not a single session I’d call good. We’ve got a long dry spell ahead. From now, right through until the end of the month and into early September, the surf is tiny and the wind is all wrong. You’re looking at a gap of several days with nothing worth paddling out for.
The only flicker of life shows up right at the end of the window, over the last weekend of August into the first couple of days of September. Even then, it’s not much. On Friday morning, 28 August, we see a small uptick – a 3 ft swell from the WNW with a period of 8 seconds, and the energy climbs to a moderate 105 (combined wave energy). But it’s getting hammered by onshore wind. The afternoon is even worse. By Saturday 29 August and Sunday 30 August, there’s a 3 ft to 4 ft WNW swell with a slightly better energy reading of 136 to 163, but again, it’s all cross-onshore or onshore winds. The water is warm, but that doesn’t help the choppy, messy conditions. This is a beach/jetty setup, and with the wind howling on it, this looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
If you’re desperate, the *slightest* chance for a clean wave is on Tuesday morning, 18 August. The swell is a weak 3 ft from the WNW (period 7 seconds), and the energy is low at 68, but for a brief moment, the wind goes glass – dead calm. You’ll get a clean, rippable little wave, but it’s tiny. The water temp is sitting at 86°F, about 4°F warmer than normal for this time of year, so it’s a touch warmer than usual. That’s your only real window for a surf in the first week, and even then, it’s pretty ordinary. The crowds can show up, so you won’t be alone.
Honestly, mate, there’s nothing to get excited about. It’s a long stretch of poor surf. Keep an eye on the forecasts, because it tends not to stay this flat for too long, but for now, you might as well wax the board and wait.
