The Lowdown
Right then, let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for Betset over the next couple of weeks.
Alright, I’m gonna be straight with you – the next 16 days are looking pretty grim for any decent surf. The swell is tiny, the period is short, and the wind is mostly a mess. We’ve got nothing but poor surf conditions flagged across the entire forecast. The combined wave energy barely gets a look in, with the highest reading we see hitting just 78 (moderate energy) right at the end, which is still a weak offering. It’s a long, quiet stretch.
The water at Betset is sitting at a warm 85°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year. Nice for a swim, but not much use for a decent paddle.
The first real mention of anything that might make you grab a board is on Wednesday morning, August 5th. Don’t get excited though. It’s a pathetic 2 ft from the WNW with a short 6-second period. The wind is a cross-on from the NW at 9 mph, so it’s choppy and messy. The energy reading is a paltry 23 (weak energy). This theme just repeats day after day.
We get a tiny bit of hope on Monday morning, August 10th. The wind goes glassy from the north at just 3 mph, which is a beautiful thing to see. But the swell is still a miserable 2 ft from the west with that same short 6-second period. The energy is weak at 29. It’d be flat, clean, and pretty, but there’s nothing to ride.
From there, it’s more of the same. The swell stays below 3 ft right through until the end of the forecast. The winds chop and change, mostly cross-on or onshore, with a few cross-shore breezes thrown in. The period barely ever gets above 7 seconds, so it’s all windswell – weak and gutless. The energy figures stay in the low two digits until the middle of the second week, climbing just into the 50s and 70s by the 17th and 18th of August, but even then, the swell is only 3 ft to 3 ft with a short period.
Honestly, there’s no standout session here. Not a single day is worth trying to paddle out. For a beginner-friendly spot like Betset, these conditions are just a washout. It’s one of those stretches where the forecast can change, and it tends not to stay this poor for long, but right now, I’d leave the boards in the shed. This is a kite-surfing kind of setup at best, with those onshore winds and ankle-to-knee-high bumps.
