The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's be straight with you: the next 16 days are a tough watch for surf around Vouliagmeni. We're looking at a long stretch, from today, Wednesday the 5th of August, all the way through to the 20th of August, with nothing but flat spells and poor surf conditions. The only tiny flicker of life comes right at the very end.

For the first 13 days, it's a total write-off. The combined energy is zero, and every single session is labelled "poor surf conditions." The wind is mostly offshore or clean, which is a real kick in the teeth because it's blowing over a flat ocean. Water temp is sitting at 78°, which is about 1° above normal for this time of year, so it's a little warmer than average but nothing crazy.

The only break we've got to talk about is Vouliagmeni. It's an exposed spot, inconsistent, and best for beginners, but unfortunately, there's just nothing to ride. The whole first two weeks are a complete blank.

Then, on the morning of Tuesday the 18th of August, a tiny ripple shows up. A 1-foot swell from the SSW with a period of 4 seconds creeps in. The combined energy is a measly 4. It's glassy, which is nice, but that's a pathetic, short-period windswell that won't wrap in or hold up. It's more of a lake ripple than a surfable wave. The afternoon gets a sloppy 1-foot swell from the S with a 3-second period, and onshore wind. Not worth paddling for.

The next morning, Wednesday the 19th, there's a 0.7-foot swell from the S with a 4-second period. The combined energy is just 1. That's it. We're talking about dribble. The wind is clean, but it's still not surf.

That's your lot. A 13-day drought followed by a couple of days of laughable ripples. If you're desperate for a paddle, Tuesday the 18th morning is the least bad option, but don't expect a wave. For the rest of the period, it's a flat spell you'd normally expect in a place like this when the swell window closes up. Keep your board in the car and your eyes on the horizon—forecasts can change, and it won't stay poor forever.

Rusty.
