The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks.
Well, mate, I gotta be straight with you – it’s a long, flat stretch ahead. The forecast shows zero combined swell energy (0) right through until the end of August. The water’s sitting at 78° – that’s about average for the time of year, nothing to write home about.
We’re looking at a solid gap of nothing. Day after day of “poor surf conditions” – clear skies, but no height, no period, no energy. The wind does swing offshore or glassy on a few mornings, like Wednesday the 19th of August morning with a glassy 3 mph from the ENE, or Saturday the 22nd of August morning with a clean 3 mph offshore from the NNW – but without any swell, it’s just a pretty lake. Even on the 25th of August morning, you’ve got a moderate offshore breeze at 12 mph from the N, but still, zero swell. It’s heartbreaking.
Honestly, if you’re desperate for a paddle, you’re looking at the very end of the forecast. On Wednesday the 2nd of September morning, we finally see a tiny pulse: 0.7 ft from the south, with a period of just 4 seconds and combined energy of only 1 – that’s barely a ripple. The wind is a clean cross-offshore from the NW at 9 mph, so it’d be smooth, but the wave is so small it’s only for the most optimistic beginner. The afternoon is even worse – a cross-onshore breeze messing up that same tiny 0.7 ft south swell.
So, what’s the standout? There isn’t one. The only break we’ve got on the radar is Vouliagmeni, and it’s inconsistent at the best of times. When it’s flat, it’s flat. For a solid 15 days, the surf is a no-go. If you’re a kite surfer, those strong, clean offshore winds on the 25th of August might look interesting, but for a paddle surfer? Hang the board up for a fortnight.
Rusty.
