The Lowdown
Alright, folks, let me level with you. I’ve been staring at the charts for Vouliagmeni, and I’m not gonna lie to you—this is a bleak one. We’re looking at a solid 16 days of pretty much nothing, and for a spot that’s already inconsistent, a stretch like this is more normal than we’d hope, but it’s a tough pill to swallow.
We start off Monday, July 20th, with a big fat zero. Tuesday the 21st, glassy morning, but no swell. Wednesday the 22nd, flat calm again. This just keeps going: clear skies, offshore winds, and not a wave to be seen. The water’s at a warm 80°F, which is much warmer than usual for this time of year, but that doesn’t help when there’s nothing to ride.
The first flicker of something shows up on Thursday, July 23rd. We’ve got a tiny 0.3ft swell from the south, with a short period of 6 seconds, and a northerly offshore breeze. The combined energy is a pitiful 1, so it’s barely a wrinkle. You could paddle out, but you’d be scratching for a knee-high dribble.
Friday the 24th? Glassy morning, but flat. Saturday the 25th has offshore winds, still nothing. Sunday the 26th, another glassy morning, but zilch. This pattern just keeps rolling. We get a few mornings with a light offshore and clean conditions, but the swell board is empty.
The only real nod to a wave comes on Tuesday, July 28th. The morning shows a 1ft swell from the south-southwest, period of 5 seconds, and combined energy of 6. It’s not much, and with a north-northwest cross-offshore wind, it’ll be clean, but you’re looking at ankle-biters at best.
The rest of the run through to August 4th is a total loss. Some strong offshore winds, even a fresh northerly at 28 mph on August 1st, but no swell to go with it. That kind of wind over flat water is just a tease.
So, what’s the verdict? There is no standout. There is no best day. The entire 16-day window is a bust for surfing. If you’ve got a kite, those strong, consistent northerlies later in the period might be worth a look, but for paddle surfing, you’re better off picking up a new hobby for a couple of weeks. Forecasts can change, and it usually doesn’t stay this poor for long, but for now, I’ve got nothing good to say.
