The Lowdown
Alright, let’s be real. The next 16 days at Vouliagmeni are a total write-off. There’s no surf worth talking about. The whole period is a long, flat stretch with no proper swell and only the occasional tiny, useless ripple.
Starting Sunday 23 August, it’s clear and glassy with a 3 mph east wind, but the swell is zero – combined energy of all swells directed here is 0. The water’s 80°F, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, but that’s the only thing worth noting. The whole of the next week stays like this: clean skies, some offshore and cross-off breezes, but no waves. The closest we get is Monday 31 August afternoon: a tiny 0.7 ft easterly swell with a period of just 3 seconds and energy of 1 – that’s not a wave, it’s a puddle ripple. The wind is cross-off from the northeast at 19 mph, so it’s messy.
Into September, it’s more of the same. Thursday 3 September afternoon gives us a glassy clean-up with a 1 ft easterly swell, period 3 seconds, energy 1. Then Sunday 6 September afternoon has a 1 ft southerly with a 2-second period and energy 1. By Monday 7 September morning, we’ve got a 0.7 ft southerly, 4-second period, energy 1. None of this is surfable. The wind is often light or offshore, but without any proper swell, it’s a waste of time.
Vouliagmeni (Greece) is an inconsistent spot for beginners, and it rarely breaks even in good conditions. This run is a total blank. It’s not unusual for this area to go quiet for long stretches, so don’t get your hopes up. The forecasts can change, but right now, there’s nothing. If you’re really keen to get wet, bring a flat-water paddle board.
