The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – the outlook for our local stretch ain’t looking great, not gonna lie. We’ve got a long, quiet period ahead, so if you’re jonesing for a wave, you’ll need some patience.

First up, we’re talking about Vouliagmeni. It’s a beginner-friendly spot, but it’s inconsistent and can get crowded. The water temp is sitting at 80°, which is much warmer than usual for this time of year – feels more like a bath than the Med, so a springy will feel thick.

Right now, from Monday 7th September and all the way through to the morning of Saturday 19th September, it’s flat. No energy. Swell energy is zero (0). We’re talking about a solid 12-day stretch of nothing but clear skies and offshore or glassy winds – which is a shame because it’s clean but there’s nothing to ride.

Then, on the morning of Saturday 19th September, we see a tiny bump: a 0.3 ft swell from the south with a period of 6 seconds, and combined energy of just 1. Still, that’s “poor surf conditions” – not even worth paddling out for.

Finally, on the morning of Sunday 20th September, we get the only real mentionable window. There’s a 3 ft SSW swell pushing in with a 6-second period, and combined energy hitting 104 – that’s moderate energy, so there’s a little bit of push. The wind will be gentle offshore from the north, so it should be clean. But the waves are described as “surfable but very ordinary conditions”, and the score reflects that. It’s not a standout; it’s just the only game in town after a long drought. The short period (under 8 seconds) means the waves will be a bit weak and crumbly.

That same afternoon, the wind picks up to a fresh 19 mph north-northeasterly, but the swell drops back to 2 ft – not worth it.

After that, Monday 21st and Tuesday 22nd September stay small and messy, with the wind getting strong – 25 mph on Monday afternoon – making things blown out. There’s a bit more energy on Tuesday morning (3 ft, 5 seconds, 45 energy), but still nothing to get excited about.

Tuesday afternoon sees the biggest swell height of the whole forecast: 5 ft from the south with a 6-second period and combined energy of 134 (moderate). But the wind is cross-onshore from the southwest, and conditions are described as “marginal”. That size is still fine for beginners, but the cross-onshore wind will mess up the face.

So, if you’re desperate, the best bet is the morning of Sunday 20th September. But don’t expect much. For the rest of this 16-day window, the surf is mostly a no-show. That blank run is pretty normal for the area in this season. Forecasts can change, but as it stands, leave your board at home unless you’re keen on a flat paddle.

Rusty.
