The Lowdown
Alright, mates, Rusty here. Let’s size up what’s coming for the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, it’s a total bust for Vouliagmeni. We’re talking a solid 15 days of flatness, right through to the 9th of September. That’s a long stretch of nothing. The water’s warm, around 81°, which is much warmer than usual for this time of year, but it doesn’t help when there’s zero swell.
The wind is teasing us with clean conditions – plenty of light offshore breezes and even some glassy days from the 27th of August into early September. Perfect conditions, but no waves to ride. It’s a beach-and-reef setup, but with no energy, it’s not even worth a thought for paddle surfing. No action for the kite crowd either.
Then, on the 10th of September, we finally get a whisper of something. Thursday morning brings a tiny 0.6ft swell from the south with a period of 4 seconds, and combined energy of just 2 (weak). The wind is light and cross-offshore, so it’ll be clean, but it’s barely a bump. By the afternoon, it drops to 0.3ft from the south with a period of 6 seconds, energy of 1 (weak) and a moderate cross-onshore wind making it choppy. This is only for a beginner to practice on a knee-high ripple, and even then, it’s inconsistent and rarely breaks.
Bottom line: there are no good surf options in this 16-day window. A blank run like this is normal for the area in late summer. It won’t stay poor forever, but for now, you’re better off doing something else.
Rusty.
