The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – the next couple of weeks are looking pretty bleak for a paddle around Vouliagmeni.
We’re starting off with a long, dry spell. From Thursday the 6th of August right through to the 18th of August, the combined wave energy sits at a flat zero (0) nearly every session. The wind is often offshore or clean, which would be great if there was any swell to work with, but there isn’t. The water temperature is sitting at 78°, which is about 1° warmer than the long-term average at this time of year – so it’s pretty normal, just a touch warm. But without waves, that’s a swim, not a surf.
The first real sign of life doesn’t show up until the 19th of August. On Wednesday morning, we see a tiny 0.7 ft swell from the south with a period of 3 seconds and weak energy (1). That’s barely a ripple. The wind is light and offshore from the NNW, so the surface will be clean, but you’ll be waiting a long time between any rideable lumps. This spot is already inconsistent, so don’t expect much.
A couple of days later, on Friday the 21st of August, we get the best of a very poor bunch. The morning offers a 1.0 ft south swell, with a period of 4 seconds and combined energy of just 4. The wind is light from the NW, cross-offshore, keeping the surface clean. It’s still tiny, and the period is short, so waves will be weak and crumbly. For a beginner, it’s barely worth getting wet, but it’s the only time in the whole 16-day window where you might catch a knee-high roller.
Honestly, this is a classic summer flat spell for the area. The wind is there, but the ocean just isn’t cooperating. The only highlight is that Friday the 21st morning – if you’re desperate for a splash, that’s your window. Don’t hold your breath.
Rusty.
