The Lowdown
G'day, Rusty here. Look, I'm gonna be straight with you – this 16-day window for Lygia reef is a tough beat for anyone who wants to actually get a wave. We’ve got a long stretch of hardly anything on offer, so let's get into it.
We kick off Thursday the 6th of August, and there's just nothing doing. The combined swell energy is a flat zero (0). It’s not until Saturday the 8th that we see even a whisper of energy, but the swell is tiny at 1ft from the WNW with a short period. It’s surfable but really not worth paddling out for. This run of poor conditions keeps going through the week. Friday the 14th gives us a glassy morning with a 0.3ft swell – that's about as small as it gets. The only time this spot even looks close to interesting is Thursday the 20th of August. On the morning of the 20th, we get a clean, glassy morning with a 4.6ft W swell and a period of 6 seconds. The combined energy jumps up to 132 (moderate wave energy), and the guidance says it’s an exposed reef break that works best on a SW swell. This one is close, but the direction is W, not the optimum SW, and the period is short. Still, for a stretch that’s been nearly flat, this is the only real pulse. It’s small enough for beginners but with that short period, it'll be a bit crumbly. The crowds here are only sometimes an issue, so you might have the place to yourself. The water temp is about average for this time of year.
After that, it dies back down again. Friday the 21st of August has a 2.3ft WNW swell with 45 energy, but that's it. Overall, this is a pretty lean forecast. Lygia reef is an inconsistent spot at the best of times, and this run of flatness is pretty normal for the area. No standouts to get excited about, but that morning on the 20th is your best shot. Stay patient.
