Alright, grab a coffee, let’s have a look at what’s in store for the next couple of weeks for Circoletto (Rome).
Honestly, this is a tough stretch. We’re looking at a long, barren gap for any decent waves. The first real surf that’s even worth mentioning doesn’t show up until around July 12th, and even then it’s barely a whisper. For over a week, from now right through the middle of July, we’ve got nothing but flat, choppy, or tiny junk – a real bummer.
You can see a tiny bump of swell from a westerly direction on July 6th, but it’s only 1ft with a poor 5-second period and cross-on wind, turning it into a messy, unrideable state. That’s not going to get anyone out of bed.
The first flicker of life is on the morning of Sunday, July 12th. We get a 2ft SSW swell with a 6-second period; the energy is weak, just 18 (that's low combined energy). The wind is light and clean from the ENE, so the morning session might be glassy, but it's tiny.
Things do start to improve as we head into the following week. The morning of Monday, July 13th, shows the same 2ft SSW swell, and the wind is light cross, so you might get a few crumbly little waves if you’re desperate.
The only real standout in this whole outlook comes on the morning of Sunday, July 19th. We finally get our biggest swell of the forecast: a 3ft groundswell from the WSW, and the wind is offshore from the NNE. Clean lines! The combined energy hits 66 – still moderate, but the best we’ve seen. For an advanced break that’s inconsistent, this is the window to watch. The swell direction is close to the optimum (SSW), so it should wrap in okay. But remember, this is over a week and a half away, so treat it as promising but not locked in. The afternoon gets messy again with cross-on wind and a bigger, lumpier 4ft swell.
All in all, if you can wait, the morning of Sunday, July 19th, is your best bet for a cleanish, surfable wave on the smaller side. The rest is a waiting game. The water is currently 79°, which is way warmer than normal – almost 4° above average for this time of year, so you can ditch the wetsuit.
Stay patient.
Rusty.
