The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here again. Let's talk about what's cooking at Circoletto in Rome, and I gotta be straight with you—it's a tough outlook for the next couple of weeks.
We are looking at a long, flat spell. From now, through the 19th of July and for the rest of the week, the energy is basically non-existent. Wave heights are barely a ripple, and the combined energy is in the single digits for most days. Even when we get a clean morning, like on Monday the 20th with glassy conditions, it's on a tiny 0.7ft swell with a period of only 4 seconds. That's just not enough to ride. The wind will be offshore at times, like Wednesday morning the 22nd with a gentle NE breeze, but there's simply no swell to work with.
For the first week, we have patchy, tiny signals. The best of a bad lot might be Thursday morning the 23rd. We get a little bump from the NW at 2ft, period a short 4 seconds, with clean conditions and a light ESE cross-off breeze. The combined energy is still weak at 10, and the surf quality is still described as poor. It's not worth getting excited about, but it's the only time the height even hits 2ft. The same can be said for Sunday the 26th, with a 2ft W swell and a clean offshore wind from the NE. But again, the period is a weak 4 seconds and the energy only hits 12. You'd be bobbing around more than surfing.
Now, as we look into the very end of the month and into August, things start to shift. Around Thursday the 30th of July, we see a swell from the SSW start to fill in. This is the optimum direction for this exposed spot. Mornings will be clean, with a light cross-off breeze. By Friday the 31st of July, the SSW swell sticks around, with 2ft and a period of 6 seconds. The combined energy climbs to 19, which is still very weak, but it's the highest we see in this entire run. The morning of the 31st is clean with a light N breeze. It’s not going to be pumping, but if you're desperate, a longboard session to bob around on the little bumps from the SSW could be on the cards.
Don’t get your hopes up for the first week of August. It fades back to tiny, weak surf. This is likely a more normal pattern for this area at this time of year. It’s a blank run, and conditions tend not to stay poor forever, but for now, the setup looks more interesting for a kite surfer than for someone on a paddleboard. There’s just no significant swell to ride.
Stay patient.
