The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here, and I gotta be straight with you – the next 16 days for Circoletto (Rome) are as bleak as I’ve seen for a while. We’re looking at a long, dry spell with hardly a wave worth paddling for. The first surfable energy doesn’t show up until the morning of Friday the 24th of July, and even then it’s a sad little pulse. Before that, from now right through to the afternoon of Thursday the 23rd of July, we’ve got a stretch of days with nothing – flat, or close to flat, with poor surf conditions across the board. It’s a tough run, and honestly, this is a spot where a blank run like this is more normal for the area, so don’t be too surprised.
The water temperature is sitting at a very unusual 82°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year – that’s a solid anomaly of 5° above average. That’s the only thing that’s pumping around here.
Let’s get into the few scraps we’ve got. On the morning of Friday the 24th of July, we finally see a bit of life. A tiny 2ft swell from the WSW, with a period of 6 seconds, and the combined energy is a weak 35. The wind is NNE at 15 mph, blowing cross-offshore, which will keep it clean. It’s a beach and reef setup here, but the swell is too small and weak to offer much. That morning is the best on offer for the whole outlook, but it’s a very low bar. The afternoon stays clean with a light offshore, but the swell drops to 1ft.
The next and only other notable bump is on Sunday the 26th of July. The morning sees a 3ft swell from the west, period 6 seconds, and energy of 72 – still weak. The wind is SE at 12 mph, cross-shore, creating a bit of chop. But the afternoon is where it gets a little more interesting, though maybe not for us. The swell jumps to 6ft from the WSW, with a period of 7 seconds and a combined energy of 448 (moderate energy). The problem is the wind is pumping from the SSE at 22 mph, cross-shore, making it lumpy and messy. With that much wind and a beach-and-reef setup, this is starting to look more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. It’s also too big for beginners, and the short period means the waves will be crumbly.
After that, it’s back to tiny, weak swells with mostly onshore or cross-onshore winds ruining any chance of a decent wave. The morning of Monday the 27th of July has a 2ft SSW swell with clean offshore winds, but it’s just too small. The morning of Saturday the 1st of August has a 2ft WNW swell and clean offshore winds, but again, it’s miniscule.
So, the pick of a very poor bunch is the morning of Friday the 24th of July. If you’re desperate, you might get a few clean little waves on the inside, but don’t expect much. For the rest of the period, it’s a waiting game. Forecasts can always change, but right now, it’s a tough outlook.
Rusty.
