The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's brewing for the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, the outlook is grim. We're looking at a long stretch of flat to tiny, messy surf. For the most part, you won't want to bother dragging your board down to Circoletto (Rome). There's no surf on offer right at the start of the period, and a huge gap of days with next to nothing.
We finally get a little pulse on Saturday morning, the 22nd of August. The early session sees a tiny 3ft swell from the west, period a weak 6 seconds. The combined energy is a paltry 78, so don't expect much push. The big news is the glassy conditions – absolutely dead calm – which will make it look pretty as a picture, but those waves will be soft and fat. It’s a spot for advanced crew only, so if you’re determined to get wet, paddle out early before the afternoon cross-shore wind messes it up.
After that, we're back into the doldrums. From Sunday the 23rd right through the 28th of August, it’s a whole lot of nothing. Tiny dribbles, onshore winds, or flat spells. You might see a 2ft wave on the 26th with a bit of offshore wind, but it’s a long paddle for a weak 12 units of energy. Not worth the effort.
The next real whisper of hope comes on Saturday the 29th of August. The swell kicks up a notch with a 4ft wave from the west, period 7 seconds. The combined energy jumps to 156 (moderate wave energy), which is the most push in the entire forecast. The wind, however, is onshore from the WSW at 12 mph, so it’s going to be a messy, bumpy beast. With the beach and reef setup, this thing is going to be blown out and chop city. Honestly, this is looking more like a day for the kite surfers than paddle surfers, that's for sure.
After that, it’s a slow fade into nothing. A clean 3ft wave on the morning of Sunday the 30th from the west with a light offshore breeze is the last little highlight, but it’s not going to save the week. Then we trail off into flatness by the 31st.
Into the second week, there's a tease on Wednesday the 2nd of September. Morning looks clean, with a 4ft swell from the WSW, period 7 seconds, and a light offshore NE breeze. The energy is 149 (moderate wave energy). It’s surfable, but very ordinary. By afternoon, the onshore wind ruins it. Thursday the 3rd is also a 'maybe' morning, with a clean 3ft wave.
The final weekend of the 4th and 5th of September is a write-off – strong winds and nothing on the cards.
It's a tough stretch. This area tends to have these blank runs, so it’s not unusual. Forecasts can change, but right now, the only day that has any snap is the morning of Saturday the 22nd of August for the clean, tiny stuff, and maybe the morning of Wednesday the 2nd of September for a slightly bigger but still average wave. Don't hold your breath.
Rusty.
