The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty, and I’ve got to be honest with you – it’s been a tough stretch out at Circoletto in Rome. Looking at the whole 16-day window, this is one of those rare blank runs you get around here where the ocean just doesn’t cooperate for us paddle-surfers.
Right now, the water’s sitting at a warm 84°F, which is much warmer than normal for the time of year – that’s over a 5°F difference from average, so it’s pretty unusual.
We’re starting off on Thursday, August 20th, with a pathetic 1ft swell out of the west at a poor 4 seconds. The combined energy is a weak (8) and we have a cross-onshore breeze. It’s just poor surf conditions, and that’s going to be the theme for a while. The whole first week is filled with tiny, weak swell and mostly the wrong wind. There are a couple of mornings, like Saturday the 22nd and Sunday the 23rd, where we get a clean light offshore from the NNE, but the swell is barely 2ft to 2ft – not enough to surf.
The week of August 24th is a real bummer. There are days where the swell actually drops to zero. It’s just flat. Even when a little pulse shows up, like on the 27th, the wind swings around and wrecks it. By the end of that week, around Friday the 28th, there’s a slight lift in energy up to (118) with a 4ft swell coming from the west, but it’s onshore and choppy. Not worth getting wet for.
Going into the second week, it’s more of the same. The period from late August into early September is filled with tiny swell and onshore winds. The one moment that feels a little different is on Sunday, August 30th, very early morning, when we get glassy conditions and literally 1ft of swell. It’s glassy, but there’s no wave to surf. It’s a tease. Later, on Thursday, September 3rd, we get another glassy morning with 2ft of weak swell, period only 4 seconds.
The best looking window falls on Friday, September 4th. We’ve got a clean morning with a gentle offshore breeze from the NNE and a 2ft swell from the west at 5 seconds. The combined energy is (33). It’s the most decent looking day of the whole stretch, and it gets a nod for that, but that’s the best I can offer.
Truth is, with few consistent swells and the setup being a beach-and-reef exposed to the south, the cleanest days have barely any waves, and the days with the most energy are messy. Given the size and onshore wind, this would honestly be more interesting for a kite surfer at times than a paddle surfer. For now, I’d say it’s a blank run.
Rusty.
