The Lowdown
Alright, folks, let's get into it. This is Rusty, and I've gotta be straight with you right off the bat. Looking at the whole 16-day window, things are pretty grim. There's a big ol' stretch of nothing, and then we get a late burst of heavy, messy swell that's really only for the brave and the foolish.
We start off from Thursday, the 20th of August, right through to the 27th, with a long run of tiny, weak, and messy conditions. The waves are barely there, the wind is all over the shop, and the energy is just pitiful. You're looking at mainly light cross-shore breezes and ankle-biters. There's a brief moment of hope on the morning of Sunday the 23rd, with a clean offshore breeze from the NNE, but the swell is a pathetic 2 ft from the west at a short 6 seconds. It's an invite to float on your board, not to surf. Then it pretty much flatlines for a few days, with zero energy in the water. Honestly, it's a write-off for the first week and a half.
Now, after that long, dry spell, things finally get a pulse. Around Friday the 28th of August, we see a big jump in size. The morning kicks off with a 7 ft swell from the west-southwest, with a moderate cross-shore wind from the SSE and a period of 7 seconds. The energy jumps to 410 (moderate), but it's still a messy, choppy setup. The afternoon gets wilder, with a 12 ft swell from the WSW, 8-second period, and a fresh 19 mph cross-onshore wind. The energy is massive at 1667 (very strong), but the quality is poor. This is strictly for the hardcore, and honestly, it looks more like a kite-surfing mission than a clean paddle session.
The standout of the whole period, and I say this with a heavy dose of caution, comes on the morning of Saturday the 29th of August. We've got an 8 ft swell from the west, with an 8-second period and a light 6 mph cross-onshore breeze from the south. The combined energy is a beefy 1381 (very strong). The forecast notes it's marginal, and the tide might be a factor, but it's our best chance for something with some real push. The wind is light, so it won't be too blown out, but an 8 ft, short-period west swell at a beach-and-reef setup like Circoletto (Rome) is going to be a raw, heavy, and challenging beast. It's not for the faint of heart.
After that, the swell drops back down. By Sunday the 30th, we're back to 5 ft to 6 ft, with a light offshore or onshore breeze, but the energy is still decent. The morning of the 30th looks like the cleanest option with a light cross-offshore easterly wind and a 5 ft swell from the west-southwest. It's not great, but it's a lot more manageable than the 29th.
Into the first week of September, the pattern is small, clean, and ordinary. The mornings of the 1st and 2nd of September have clean offshore winds (NE) and 5 ft to 6 ft swell from the west, with moderate energy. It's surfable, but it's not going to get the heart pumping. This is a classic case of "surfable waves but very ordinary conditions."
So, the bottom line is: we've got a long, flat spell, then a couple of days of raw, powerful, but messy swell, followed by a return to small, clean conditions. If you're hungry for size, pencil in the morning of Saturday the 29th of August, but it'll be a battle. For the rest of us, the mornings of the 30th of August, or the 1st and 2nd of September, offer the cleanest, most manageable waves.
That's it from me. Stay patient, and check the forecast again next week.
Rusty.
