The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it for the Rome area. I’ve been staring at the charts and, honestly, it’s a bit of a slow burn. We’ve got a long stretch of pretty ordinary conditions before a couple of windows where things might actually get interesting. The first real chance for a wave comes on Sunday the 30th of August, so we’re looking at a solid week of flat or junk surf before that.
The Long Wait (23rd – 29th August)
For the first week, it’s a write-off. From Sunday the 23rd right through to Saturday the 29th, we’re dealing with a mix of flat spells and tiny, weak energy. The mornings often look clean, but there’s nothing to ride. Afternoons get chopped up by onshore breezes. The swell is either non-existent or just a few inches of short-period windslop with combined energy readings generally under 30 (weak). Don’t bother checking the water temperature – it’s about average for this time of year, but you won’t be in it long enough to care.
The First Glimmer of Hope (30th August – 1st September)
Now, Sunday morning the 30th of August is our first real standout. Circoletto (Rome) – our only spot in the game – finally wakes up. We’re looking at a clean 5ft swell from the west with a 7-second period, and the combined energy jumps to 297 (moderate). The wind is light and offshore from the NE, so the lineup should be clean. This is the best bet on offer. It’s a tricky beach and reef setup, so it’s for advanced surfers only. This swell size is manageable for experienced paddlers.
Then Tuesday morning the 1st of September looks promising again. Another clean morning with offshore NE wind at 6 mph. The swell is a bit smaller at 4ft from the west, but the period is still 6 seconds, and the energy reading is 240 (moderate). It’s not as good as the Sunday, but it’s a solid option if you missed the first one. Keep in mind this spot can be inconsistent, so it’s not a guarantee, but the conditions are right.
The Rest of the Window (2nd – 7th September)
After that, it fades out. Thursday morning the 3rd of September has a 3ft swell from the west with a 6-second period and 120 energy (moderate), but the wind is a cross-offshore from the east, which will leave it looking a bit ordinary. The cleanest session might be Monday morning the 7th of September – glassy conditions with a 3ft swell from the SSW, but the energy is only 89 (weak), so the waves will be weak and inconsistent. It’s surfable, but nothing to get excited about.
Bottom Line: Your best bet is Sunday morning the 30th of August at Circoletto. Clean, moderate swell, offshore wind. If you miss that, Tuesday morning the 1st of September is your second chance. The rest of the 16 days is mostly a write-off. The spot is inconsistent, so this blank run isn’t a huge surprise. Forecasts can change, but right now, it’s a waiting game.
Stay stoked,
Rusty.
