The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for the Rome area.
First off, I gotta be straight with you – the next couple of weeks are looking pretty grim for a proper paddle. We’ve got a long stretch of nothing from the start, right through to the end of August and into the first days of September. You’re looking at a solid week of flat to tiny, junk surf. The wind is mostly onshore or cross-onshore, and what little swell shows up is weak and short period. Honestly, it’s a write-off for a surf check.
Things finally start to show a pulse around Sunday, August 30th. That morning, Circoletto (Rome) – which is a beach and reef setup for advanced surfers only – might offer a little something. We’ve got a 4 ft swell out of the west, with a period of 7 seconds. The combined energy is moderate at 111, but the wind is light and offshore from the ENE, so it’ll be clean. The water temp is about average for this time of year. It’s an inconsistent spot, so don’t expect a party, but if you’re keen, that’s your one window for a few clean little waves.
Then we get another week of nothing. Flat, glassy mornings, onshore afternoons, and zero energy. It’s a proper desert.
Now, hold onto your board, because on Monday, September 7th, things get proper. The morning shows a 7 ft swell from the west, with a period of 8 seconds. That’s a solid push, with strong energy hitting 853. But the wind is onshore from the SW at 16 mph, and the conditions are listed as poor. That kind of size and onshore wind is going to make it a messy, lumpy wall of whitewater. For a beach and reef break like Circoletto, that’s expert-only territory, and honestly, with that wind, it’s looking more interesting for kite surfers than paddle surfers. The swell is too big for beginners, and the quality is shot.
So, the standout? It’s that Sunday, August 30th morning. It’s the only real chance for a clean, small session. The 7th is too messy and blown out. Keep your eyes on the forecasts, but for now, it’s a waiting game.
Rusty.
