The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ve got to be straight with you – the next sixteen days around Circoletto (Rome) are a write-off. I’ve scanned every morning and afternoon from Thursday the 20th of August right through to Friday the 5th of September and there is not a single session worth paddling out for. It’s one of those rare, painful stretches where the ocean just gives you nothing.
The water is warm – about 3° above the long-term average – but that’s the only good news. There’s barely a ripple of meaningful swell at any point. The strongest reading comes on Friday the 28th of August, where the wind swell jumps to 6 ft from the west, with a combined energy of 356 – that’s a moderate pulse of wave energy – but the wind is a messy cross-onshore at 16 mph and the conditions are described as poor. It’s a choppy, blown-out mess only suited to someone who loves a beating. For most of us, that’s a hard pass.
We get a brief moment on Saturday the 22nd of August morning with 3 ft from the west, 6-second period, and a clean cross-offshore breeze (6 mph from the east), but the surf is still only rated as “surfable but very ordinary.” No energy behind it and really short period will make for soft, disorganised waves. That’s the highlight, and frankly that says it all.
There are days of absolute zero – 0 combined energy for long stretches, particularly from the 24th through the 26th and again at the end of the month. On the 3rd of September we get glassy conditions with 3 ft from the west-southwest and a combined energy of 68 – finally clean! – but the period is just 6 seconds, so it’ll be weak and fat. It might be the best looking window, but that’s not saying much.
Because there is significant swell on the 28th but poor quality, and the break is a beach-and-reef setup, this coast actually looks more interesting for a kite session than paddle surfing that day.
Simply put, put the boards in the shed and wait for another forecast run. Things can change, but right now it’s grim.
Rusty.
