The Lowdown
G'day, Rusty here, your local surf reporter. Let's take a look at what's on the menu for the next couple of weeks. To be honest, it's a pretty quiet run for the most part. There's a long stretch of small, poor-quality surf, and it's not until early September that we see a potential pulse of energy, but even that comes with question marks. There are plenty of gaps with no surf to speak of, so we'll just work through what we've got.
Alright, kicking off on Sunday the 23rd of August at Circoletto (Rome) – this is a beach and reef setup, and it's exposed to swell from the south-southwest. Water temps are sitting at a very unusual 84°, which is a solid three degrees warmer than normal for this time of year, so you can expect some real bathwater conditions. But don't get too excited. Sunday morning offers a tiny 1ft of WSW swell with a short period of 5 seconds, and while the wind is light offshore from the NE, the wave energy is weak (12). It's rated as poor surf. Sunday afternoon gets worse, with onshore wind from the SW and even smaller waves.
Monday the 24th looks glassy in the morning, but there's no swell at all. Tuesday the 25th sees a little bump in the afternoon – 2ft from the SSE at 4 seconds – but it's cross-onshore and choppy, so not worth paddling out. Wednesday the 26th morning has clean 2ft SSW swell at 6 seconds with light offshore ENE wind, but energy is still weak (36). The whole first week is pretty much a write-off with scores of zero across the board. It's one of those runs where you might be better off checking the forecast again later.
Now, we jump ahead to Wednesday the 2nd of September. This is the only real standout in the entire 16-day window, and it's still a bit of a gamble. The morning shows 5ft swell from the west with a period of 7 seconds, and the combined energy jumps to a moderate 351. That's a noticeable pulse. The wind is light cross-onshore from the SSE, which isn't perfect, but it's light enough that it might clean up. The wave comment says "marginal surf forecast or questionable tide conditions," so it's not a sure thing. But if it comes together, that's the biggest swell we've seen, and for an advanced spot like Circoletto, it might offer something fun. Keep in mind, at 5ft, this is getting too big for beginners. The swell direction is west, which isn't the optimum SSW direction for this break, so it might not be as well-shaped as it could be.
Beyond that, Thursday the 3rd drops back to 3ft from the WSW with light cross-shore NW wind, but energy is only 51. After that, it's tiny or flat all the way through to the end of the period on Monday the 7th of September. There's nothing else that even sniffs a recommendation.
So, bottom line: if you're keen, mark your calendar for the morning of Wednesday the 2nd of September. It's the only real pulse, but treat it as a promising but uncertain option. Everything else is either flat or too small and sloppy. Sometimes that's just how it goes. Keep an eye on the forecasts – things can change. Rusty out.
