The Lowdown
Alright, let’s talk about what Rome’s got cooking for the next couple of weeks. Honestly, it’s been a bit of a flat spell and you’d have been twiddling your thumbs for the first week or so. The real story here doesn’t start kicking up until around Tuesday the 25th, but even then, the quality is fighting the conditions every step of the way.
Looking at Circoletto (Rome) – this is an exposed beach and reef setup that needs the right angle to light up. And right now, that’s not easy to come by. The first few days up to Monday the 24th are pretty much a write-off. We’re talking tiny stuff – roughly 0.7 ft to 2 ft – with weak wave energy (5 to 20 in the combined energy bracket) and the swell direction is all over the place, mostly out of the west or south. The morning clean-ups when the wind is glassy or light offshore from the Northeast are a tease, but there’s just no size to work with. You’d be floating around.
Things start to shift on Tuesday the 25th. The swell punches up to about 4 ft from the southwest by morning, and by the afternoon, it’s a 7 ft west swell with a period of 7 seconds. The combined wave energy jumps to 509, which is a solid kick of moderate-to-strong energy. Problem is, the wind turns cross-onshore from the south, making it choppy. That size, that period – it’s not beginner territory. Over 5 ft and it’s getting serious fast. For an advanced break like Circoletto, though, there could be some grunty, raw waves if you can handle the chop.
Wednesday the 26th keeps that swell going – 6 ft in the morning from the west, 8-second period, and the combined energy is still strong at 367. The wind is onshore from the southwest, so expect bumpy faces. Afternoon drops to 4 ft with onshore wind too. Not clean, but there’s push.
Now, here’s where it gets interesting but also a bit messy. The standout – and I mean the only real standout in this whole outlook – looks like Tuesday the 1st of September. We see the biggest pulse of the entire window: a 8 ft west swell with an 8-second period, and the combined energy hits a whopping 1144 (very strong). That’s serious. But – and it’s a big but – the wind is onshore from the southwest at 15 mph, and it’s also a short-period swell. That combo means big, messy, and walled-up. Only for experts, and even then, you’ll be battling the wind chop. The water temperature is sitting at a very unusual 84° – that’s more than 5° warmer than normal for this date, so it feels like bathwater out there.
If you’re looking for a window with cleaner conditions, the morning of Saturday the 29th of August offers a small glimmer. A 3 ft west swell with a 6-second period and light cross-offshore wind from the east-southeast gives you clean, surfable waves. The energy is weak (84), so it’s a knee-to-waist-high option at best, but it might be the most pleasant session of the run. Crowds? This spot is “often” crowded, so don’t expect to have it to yourself, especially on a Saturday.
By the first week of September, it settles back down. The 2nd of September morning has a weak 4 ft west swell with clean offshore winds from the north – that 110 energy is moderate, not strong, but at least it’s tidy. And then it’s back to tiny waves by the 3rd.
To sum it up: the first week is a bust, the middle has some power but is wind-affected, and the standout is the 1st September pulse for the big-wave crew if they don't mind the mess. If you’re after something clean and fun, aim for the 29th morning, but keep your expectations modest. The long-range stuff looks promising in size but less certain for quality.
