The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what Coccia de Morto has in store for us over the next couple of weeks. I gotta be straight with you – it’s a tough run.
We’re starting off with a real lean patch. From Thursday the 16th right through until Saturday the 26th of July, it’s mostly tiny, weak, and messy. The water is sitting at a very warm 82°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least you won't need a thick wetsuit for the wait. The combined swell energy is barely registering, often under 20 and mostly a dribble. Thursday morning the 16th is glassy with a tiny 0.3m (1ft) SSW swell, but it’s just not enough to get excited about. There are a few cleaner moments, like Saturday morning the 18th with a glassy 0.4m (1ft) or Sunday the 19th with a 0.5m (2ft) wave, but the period is short and the energy is weak. Honestly, you’ll be floating around more than surfing. There’s a gap of almost a week and a half with nothing worth paddling out for.
Now, hold onto your boards, because things finally wake up on Sunday the 26th of July. The afternoon brings a building swell, with 1.1m (4ft) from the SSW and the combined energy jumping to 102, but the wind is cross-onshore and it’s fairly choppy. Not the best time to be out.
The real standout, the one to circle on your calendar, is Monday morning the 27th of July. This is the only day that gets a nod for very good surf conditions. We’ve got a clean 1.9m (6ft) swell rolling in from the SSW with an 8-second period. That’s pushing into the 2.5m (8ft) range, so this one is for the experienced crew only – it might be a bit too much for beginners. The combined energy hits a solid 503, which is moderate to strong, and the wind is light, cross-off, and clean. This is your window. The swell direction is SSW, and the optimum for Coccia de Morto is SW, so it’s a decent match. It’s a reef break, so expect that energy to hold up well, and remember, it can be a bit inconsistent, so you might have to wait for the sets. Crowds are often here, so with the only good swell in weeks, you can bet it’ll be busy.
After that, Monday afternoon gets choppy with the wind, and Tuesday the 28th has a clean but ordinary 1.0m (3ft) morning before it fades out again for the rest of the period into the end of July. The second week is pretty much flat or close to it, so make the most of that Monday morning if you can.
Stay stoked, and I’ll catch you down the line.
