The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's cooking for the next couple of weeks. I gotta be straight with you right from the start: the outlook for Kastro Point is a bit of a struggle. We're staring down a long, flat run with hardly any swell to speak of. The water temperature is sitting at 82°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so it's a nice temperature for a float, but not for a wave.
We kick things off on Sunday, the 23rd of August, with a tiny 1.0 ft swell from the SW. The period is a short 5 seconds, so it's weak, with a combined energy of only (4). Sunday morning has glassy conditions with a light ESE breeze at 3 mph, which would normally be perfect, but there's just nothing to ride. It's poor surf conditions, plain and simple. Sunday afternoon turns cross-shore, and that's that.
Monday the 24th is even worse, with the swell dropping to 0.3 ft. We have a glassy morning but it's flat, and then the cross-shore winds kick in again in the afternoon.
From Tuesday the 25th right through to the end of August, it's a proper flat spell. The combined swell energy drops to zero for days on end. There's nothing to recommend. You'll see the odd tiny bump of 0.7 ft or 1.0 ft but with periods of 3 or 4 seconds, it's just wind chop. The only real surf we see is on the 30th of August, a Sunday morning. We get a 1 ft swell from the SW, still a short period of 4 seconds, but the combined energy jumps to (10). It's still poor surf conditions overall, but that Sunday morning is glassy with a 3 mph ESE breeze. That is the absolute best we get in the entire outlook, and it's a pretty low bar. If you're desperate for a splash on a foamie, that's your window. The Sunday afternoon gets ruined by a 16 mph cross-shore wind.
After that, we slide into a flat September. There's a tiny bit of life on Wednesday the 2nd of September with a 1 ft swell from the WSW, 5-second period, and energy of (20), but the morning is cross-shore and the afternoon is cross-onshore. Then it's back to zeros.
The rest of the first week of September is a total blank. The combined swell energy is zero from the 4th all the way through to the 7th. This is a long, dry gap for surfers in this area.
So, to sum it up: the only time you might even consider paddling out is the morning of Sunday, the 30th of August, when the wind is glassy. Even then, the waves will be tiny. This is a tough period for Kastro Point. Don't hold your breath, but keep an eye on the forecasts because things can change.
Rusty, signing off.
