The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. I’ve had a long look at what’s on offer around Kastro Point over the next 16 days, and I’ve got to be straight with you—it’s pretty bleak. This stretch is an exposed point break that’s pretty inconsistent at the best of times, and this run looks like one of those proper flat spells. The water’s sitting at 81°F which is a touch warmer than normal for late August, so at least a dip feels good.
The first recommendation doesn’t show up until Friday afternoon, 21 August. Even then it’s barely a ripple. Friday afternoon brings a tiny 1ft W swell with a period of just 5 seconds, and a cross-shore wind from the west at 9 mph. Combined wave energy is minimal at 4, and the comment says poor surf conditions—it’s a bust. Saturday 22 August is similar: Saturday morning glassy but flat, Saturday afternoon 1ft SW swell, still short period at 5 seconds, cross-shore wind. Energy hits 6 but that’s still tiny.
Sunday 23 August through to Tuesday 25 August is almost entirely flat. A few mornings show glassy conditions but no swell to speak of. Wednesday 26 August afternoon gives us 1ft WNW swell with a 4 second period and cross-shore wind—energy of 4. Thursday 27 August: flat again. Friday 28 August morning shows 0.3ft SW, period 5 seconds, glassy—energy of 1. Friday afternoon gets a cross-onshore breeze and 0.3ft SW. Saturday 29 August similar story, morning flat, afternoon 0.7ft WSW with wind ripples.
Sunday 30 August morning sees a slight offshore from the north at 3 mph with a 0.7ft WSW swell, period 4 seconds, energy of 2. Sunday afternoon gets messy with a 19 mph cross-shore from WNW, still just 0.7ft. Monday 31 August flat again, and Tuesday 1 September the same.
Wednesday 2 September morning has a tiny 0.7ft WSW, period 4 seconds, glassy conditions—energy 1. Afternoon cross-onshore, same small bump. Thursday 3 September morning gives 0.7ft WSW, period only 3 seconds. Friday 4 September morning has 0.7ft WSW, period 5 seconds, glassy—energy 2. Saturday 5 September afternoon finishes the run with a cross-shore and nothing.
There are no standouts here. No bigger swell, no good wind aligning with any real size. The whole 16-day window is a near-complete flat spell. For a point break that needs a decent SSW swell and offshore NNE winds to work, this forecast offers none of that. If you’re set on getting wet, the cleanest windows would be the glassy mornings—21 August morning, 22 August morning, 30 August morning—but you’d be chasing ankle-biters. Honestly, the setup looks more interesting for a paddleboard or a long swim. Forecasts can change, but right now? There’s nothing to get excited about.
Rusty.
