The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this is a grim outlook for the Athens area. We’re looking at a solid two-week stretch with nothing on the table. The entire first 16 days of the forecast are a bust for surf. From the 5th of August right through to the 17th, there’s zero swell energy. The ocean is flat, no wave height, no period, nothing. You’ll just be staring at a mirror. The wind is mostly offshore or cross-offshore, which is a cruel tease – clean, glassy conditions, but with nothing to ride. It’s the kind of setup that makes you want to just go for a swim.
The water temperature is sitting at 78°, which is a touch warmer than usual for this time of year, but it doesn’t matter when there’s no surf.
We finally see a tiny whisper of hope on the 18th of August, Tuesday morning. Ulumitsu or Agios Dimitrios (Athens) might see a tiny 1.0ft swell from the SSW, with a period of 4 seconds. That’s a short, weak windswell, and the combined energy is a measly 4. It’s glassy that morning, which is nice, but it’s inconsistent and rarely breaks here. Thursday afternoon on the 20th has a small cross-offshore breeze, but still no real swell back in the water.
The rest of the run through the 19th and 20th is the same story: tiny, weak slop that won’t get you out of bed. The break is a reef, exposed to the south, but the swell direction is off and the energy is just too low. For a beginner, anything over 5ft would be too much, but we’re so far from that it’s not funny. This is a blank run that’s pretty normal for the area in summer. Don’t sell your board, but definitely don’t wax it up for the next two weeks.
