The Lowdown

Alright, let’s see what’s cooking for the next couple of weeks.

First off, I’ll be honest – this is a quiet spell. The forecast for Little Bay shows a long stretch of small, weak surf with hardly any energy. The first real recommendation doesn’t come until Thursday morning, August 27th, but even then the waves are only 2 ft with a short 6-second period, so there’s not much push. The water temp is 84°F, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year – almost 5°F above average, so that’s pretty unusual and you’ll be in for a warm dip if you get in.

From that Thursday morning, the pattern is mostly glassy conditions with tiny waves… 1 ft, 0.7 ft, even 0.3 ft for days on end. The wind is light and often offshore or glassy, which is good for clean conditions, but the swell just isn’t there. The combined energy is mostly in the single digits or low teens (like 19, 15, 7, 4), which is weak. There’s a gap of several days with no real surf to speak of – from the end of August right through the first few days of September.

The best of a pretty quiet period comes on Saturday morning, September 5th, when we see a bump to 2 ft from the WNW with a 6-second period. The combined energy ticks up to 36, which is still low but at least noticeable. Winds are light ENE and glassy – that’s about as clean as it gets. The swell direction is from the WNW, which is not quite the optimum SW that Little Bay prefers, but for a small wave day, it’ll still wrap in a bit. Then again on Wednesday morning, September 9th, we get 3 ft from the WSW with a 6-second period and energy up to 44. That’s the biggest wave size in the whole outlook, and the morning’s glassy again. But the period is short, so it’ll be a bit choppy and soft. Still, if you’re itching for a paddle, that’s your best bet.

Overall, I’d say the pick of the fortnight is Wednesday morning, September 9th at Little Bay. The swell is 3 ft from the WSW, period 6 seconds, clean and glassy with light ESE winds. The water temp is still warm, and the energy is 44 – the highest we see. It’s not huge, but it’s the most surfable window we’ve got.
