The Lowdown

G'day, it's Rusty here. Let's have a look at the only game in town for the next couple of weeks: Oyster Bar Beachbreak.

Alright, straight up, this is a tough read. The swell is coming in from the SW, which is the optimum direction for this spot, but the wave heights are tiny – we're looking at mostly 1ft to 2ft through the first week. The energy is weak, with combined swell energy readings mostly in the low to mid hundreds (130 to 588). This is a break that 'rarely breaks', so you're already fighting the odds. The water temp is a balmy 89°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year.

The first real glimmer of hope comes on Thursday, 6th August. The morning is a light cross-onshore, but the afternoon turns glassy with NW wind at 3 mph. That's a massive positive. The swell is a tiny 2ft from the SW, but with a period of 13 seconds it's got some groundswell grunt. The energy kicks up to 362 (moderate). It's still small, but for a spot that rarely breaks, that glassy window is the best you're going to get. This is your standout.

Friday, 7th August, has a bit more size, hitting 3ft on the afternoon from the SW, with a long 17-second period. The energy is up to 588 (moderate). But the wind is onshore or cross-on, so the quality is marginal. The cleanest option is the Saturday afternoon, 8th August, with a cross-offshore breeze from the north at 9 mph, giving 3ft at 16 seconds. Clean, but still small.

There's a big gap in the middle of the second week. The surf quality drops off a cliff. From Monday, 10th August, through to Wednesday, 19th August, it's mostly poor or marginal. The swell stays around 2ft to 3ft, but the wind is almost always onshore or cross-onshore.

A final, interesting note pops up on Sunday, 16th August. The morning sees a clean cross-offshore breeze from the SE at 6 mph, with 3ft swell from the SW at 15 seconds. The energy is moderate (371). For a spot that rarely breaks, this is another clean, if small, window.

Don't go expecting barrels. For beginners, the size is fine, but the inconsistency and lack of quality are the real issues. The main window is that Thursday afternoon, 6th August, with the glassy conditions. The rest is a gamble. The second week, from around the 16th, looks promising but less certain. Keep an eye on the forecasts.

Rusty.
