The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty, checking in for Newcastle Beach. We’ve got a bit of a mixed bag, but there’s some serious potential on the horizon if you can wait for it.
Right now, the water temp is sitting at a fairly average 66°F for this time of year, so no need to dig out the thickest wetsuit just yet.
The immediate outlook is pretty grim. Sunday morning and afternoon are a write-off with poor, onshore wind and a messy 6ft to 6ft easterly swell. The combined energy is moderate at 912, but it’s just not surfable. Monday is barely better, with a marginal 5ft to 5ft cross-onshore swell and light wind ripples. Honestly, you’re better off staying on the couch for a couple of days.
We start to see a glimmer of hope on Tuesday morning, the 21st. The wind swings around to a light cross-offshore from the north, cleaning up a 4ft easterly swell. The energy drops to 319, but it’s clean. It’s not going to be a classic, but it’s surfable. Wednesday morning, the 22nd, has a moderate offshore from the NW and a clean 2ft swell, but it’s tiny and weak with an energy of 106.
We have a real gap in quality surf from Tuesday afternoon through to Thursday the 23rd, with only small, weak waves on offer. Don’t get your hopes up for that mid-week period.
The real standout starts to build on Friday the 24th. The morning has a clean 5ft southerly swell with a gentle cross-offshore wind. The energy is building nicely at 426. This is the first genuine good surf of the forecast. Then Saturday the 25th morning looks even better for experienced surfers. A clean 3ft southerly swell, but with a very long period of 13 seconds and a moderate offshore wind, giving it a combined energy of 534. That’s a groundswell, and it’ll have some real punch for a beach break, though the long period might make it a bit straight. Still, it’s clean and powerful.
The best of the best, however, is shaping up for Tuesday the 28th of July. The morning session is an absolute standout for experienced crew. The finder is calling for a 7ft southerly swell with a 13-second period, light offshore wind, and a combined energy of 1400. That’s powerful, clean, and solid. It’s big enough to be expert territory, but the conditions are excellent. The afternoon sees a massive, expert-only 12ft SSE swell with a very long 17-second period, but the wind turns onshore, so it’s likely a messy, dangerous beast best left alone.
Wednesday the 29th is another good one for the experienced, with a moderate offshore wind and a 8ft SSE swell, energy at 2160. The following week, Thursday the 30th and Friday the 31st, offer a more accessible 4ft to 5ft SSE groundswell with gentle offshore winds, which is much more manageable.
The first weekend of August (the 1st) has a solid 7ft SSE swell with a moderate offshore wind on the Saturday afternoon, giving it a 923 energy rating—a very good option. Then, on Monday the 3rd of August, we get a huge, expert-only 10ft SSE swell with a 13-second period and light offshore wind. The energy is massive at 3331. That’s a serious, powerful, and clean day for the big-wave hunters.
The crowds at Newcastle Beach can be a factor, especially on the weekends and when the swell is pumping, so time your paddle out for the early sessions.
So, to sum it up: the first few days are a washout. The real standout is the Tuesday the 28th morning session for the experienced crew, followed closely by the Friday the 24th morning for a more accessible good wave. The second week has some serious power, but it’s mostly for the experts. Keep it salty.
Rusty.
