Table - best surf conditions forecast for Newcastle Beach over the next 16 days.
Alright, Rusty here with the Newcastle outlook. Let’s break it down.
We’re in for a bit of a quiet start, then a clean window, and then a huge pulse of swell that’s only for the brave. There’s a long gap of no real surf recommendations from Sunday, July 12th, through to Thursday, July 16th, so a few days of flat or poor conditions.
The first chance is Thursday afternoon, July 9th, at Newcastle Beach. It’s a beach and reef, very consistent. Water temp is about 66°F, which is pretty normal for this time of year. The swell is 6ft from the SE, period 10 seconds – a solid groundswell. The energy is moderate (633). The wind is a light onshore from the SE, so it’s a bit messy. “Slight air” doesn’t help much.
Friday morning, July 10th, is the better call. The swell is 6ft from the SE, 10-second period. Energy is moderate (527). The wind swings to a W 10 km/h cross-off, which is clean. “Light breeze” and “clean” conditions. This is a good session for a beginner-friendly spot, but it’s still a proper 6ft, so it’s got some push.
Saturday morning, July 11th, is a clean one. Swell is 4ft from the SE, period 9 seconds, with a NW 10 km/h offshore wind. Energy is moderate (398). Glassy, clean, fun little waves for a longboard.
Saturday afternoon the swell drops to 3ft from the ESE, 11-second period, with a NNW 15 km/h offshore wind. Energy is moderate (313). Still clean, but small.
Then the dead zone. Strong wind, no swell, poor conditions.
Thursday, July 16th, the big stuff arrives. Swell is 16ft from the SSE, 10-second period. The energy is massive (4755 to 5953). The wind is onshore and messy. This is not for surfing; it’s a washing machine. It’s more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
Friday, July 17th, is even bigger – 18ft from the SSE, 11-second period, energy up to 7426. Cross-on wind and choppy. A total no-go.
Saturday, July 18th, is the peak: 20ft from the SSE, 12-second period, energy 9715. Still cross-on wind. Huge, dangerous.
Sunday, July 19th, is still massive at 18ft from the SSE, 12-second period, but the wind is finally offshore from the NNW at 10 km/h. “Clean” conditions. Energy is 9051. This is a monster groundswell for experts only. The beach is going to be a straight, fast closeout.
Monday, July 20th, is the standout. The swell drops to 10ft from the SE, 11-second period, with a NW 15 km/h offshore wind. Energy is strong (2362). “Excellent surf conditions for experienced surfers.” The wind is clean, the waves have power. This is the best day of the period.
Tuesday, July 21st, the swell is 6ft from the SE, 10 seconds, with a WNW cross-off wind. Energy is moderate (704). It’s a “marginal” forecast, but the wind is clean.
The rest of the window is a mixture of dropping swell and lumpy wind, with a brief rise on Thursday, July 23rd, to 8ft from the S, but with a strong cross wind and poor conditions.
Friday, July 24th, is a final chance. 6ft from the ESE, 10 seconds, with a WSW 15 km/h cross-off wind. Energy is moderate (1119). The wind is “clean.” It’s a marginal call, but could be a sneaky session.
Best Bet: Monday, July 20th. The 10ft SE swell, 11-second period, with clean NW offshore wind. Big, powerful, and for the experienced crew, it’s the best of the lot.
Second choice: Friday morning, July 10th. The 6ft SE swell with clean cross-off wind. Solid and fun.
Rusty.
