Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
G’day, Rusty here, and I’ve been looking hard at what Newcastle Beach (Newcastle-Beach) has cookin’ over the next couple of weeks. I’ll be straight with ya – it’s a rough start, but there’s some real magic on the horizon if you’ve got the patience.
Look, we’ve got a solid week of frustration ahead. From Monday afternoon the 6th right through until the morning of Thursday the 9th, it’s pretty much a write-off. The swell is pumping, but that’s about the only good thing – heavy rain and strong onshore winds from the SSE and S are turning it into a messy, choppy mess. Swell heights are 8 to 12 ft, with combined energy readings from 1427 up to a thumping 2917, so there’s heaps of power out there, but it’s all blown to bits. Honestly, it looks more like a kite session than paddling anything decent.
Thursday the 9th is where things start to turn. The morning brings a light WSW breeze, clean lines, and a smaller 5 ft swell from the ESE with an 11-second period – that’s proper groundswell. Combined energy is a moderate 899, and the cross-off wind will have the waves looking tidy. The afternoon gets even better: glassy conditions with a 6 ft SE swell (660 energy). The water temp is sitting at 66°, which is about normal for this time of year, so no surprises there.
Friday the 10th keeps the goods rolling. Morning is clean again with a W cross-off breeze, 5 ft SE swell (9-second period), and 530 energy. The afternoon drops off to onshore though, so get out early.
Saturday the 11th and Sunday the 12th offer smaller but clean options. Saturday morning sees offshore NW wind at 9 mph, 4 ft SE swell (333 energy), and clean conditions. Sunday afternoon has 2 ft ESE swell (116 energy) with offshore WNW breeze, but it’s pretty small – just ordinary surf.
Now, here’s the standout. Friday the 17th of July morning is your absolute best bet. There’s a solid 7 ft south swell with an 11-second period hitting the beach, combined energy of 1065, and a light NNE breeze at just 3 mph – that’s near glass. Conditions are clean and excellent, but at 7 ft, this one’s for experienced surfers only. Newcastle Beach is a beach and reef setup, and with this size and period, it’ll be holding plenty of power. Crowds are often a thing here, so expect company.
Sunday the 19th of July morning is another cracker. A 5 ft SE swell with a 12-second period (long period groundswell) and gentle offshore NNW wind at 9 mph. Combined energy is 811, and it’s clean – a real fun, glassy morning.
Monday the 20th of July afternoon brings a pulse of 4 ft S swell (244 energy) with moderate offshore wind and good conditions.
Then we’ve got a late pulse on Tuesday the 21st of July – a big 12 ft S swell (3706 energy) with clean cross-off wind, but it’s flagged as marginal on tide, and 12 ft is expert-only territory. Worth a look if you’ve got the skills.
After that, the surf fades into tiny dribble through the rest of the forecast. Overall, the first week is a battle, but the second week offers some stunning windows – especially that Friday the 17th morning.
Rusty.
