The Lowdown
G'day, Rusty here. Look, I've had a good look at Newcastle Beach and the next couple of weeks are a bit of a mixed bag. The water's sitting at 63°, which is a bit colder than we'd normally expect for this time of year, so you might want an extra springy.
For the first few days, from Friday the 21st right through the weekend, it's pretty flat and unappealing. We're looking at tiny waves, mostly under 2ft, with weak energy (30) and short period swell. Not worth paddling out for.
The first real hint of something worth checking comes on Sunday the 23rd morning. We've got a glassy 3ft south swell coming in with a solid 11-second period. The combined energy jumps to 162, which is moderate, and with those calm, glassy conditions, it's going to be clean. It's a small, long-period groundswell, so it might be a bit too straight for the beach break, but it's your best bet for a quiet, easy paddle.
Then we get a bit of a lull through the week, with small, onshore days. The energy picks up a bit on Monday the 31st. The afternoon session looks the goods: clean with a moderate offshore breeze, 4ft of east swell, and combined energy of 226. It's not huge, but it's clean and surfable.
The real standout, though, is looking like Thursday the 3rd of September. That morning we've got a clean 3ft swell from the ENE with a 10-second period, combined energy of 352 – that's a solid, moderate push. The wind is light and offshore, making it clean. The swell direction is also a good match for the break. Just keep an eye on the crowds, as it can get busy here.
After that, we're back into small, clean conditions for the weekend of the 5th, but nothing to get too excited about. Overall, if you've got a longboard, Sunday the 23rd morning is your glassy, quiet session, but for the best all-round quality, pencil in Thursday the 3rd of September.
Rusty.
