The Lowdown
Alright, grab your wettie, 'cause I'm Rusty, and here's how it's looking for Newcastle Beach.
Gotta be straight with you – the start of this run is a bit of a write-off. We've got a solid week of onshore garbage blowing straight into the beach, making a mess of things. The swell is there, but it's sloppy – windswell junk with short periods of 6 to 8 seconds and weak energy. It's not worth paddling out for. That run of poor conditions stretches from Friday the 17th right through to Sunday the 19th.
Now, Monday the 20th is where things start to wake up. The early morning session is the pick of the first week. The wind drops right out – glassy, clean conditions with a light northerly offshore. You're looking at a clean 5ft wave from the east, with a period of 10 seconds. The energy is moderate, but the lack of wind is the real story here. It'll be a fun little wave for a beginner, but don't expect any stand-out barrels.
The next real standout, and the best on offer in the whole window, lands on Monday the 27th of July. A solid 5ft groundswell from the SE rolls in with a long 13-second period, packing a moderate energy punch. The morning is clean with a light offshore breeze. This is that proper, lined-up energy that will make the points and reefs work better than the beach itself. Keep in mind, with a period that long, it can break a bit straight on the beach, so look for a bank or a corner. This is the day to make plans around.
The week before that, on Friday the 24th, a big 12ft swell from the south hits, but it's crossed-up and messy with strong onshore wind. The energy is huge, but the quality is poor. That's a kite-surfing special, not a paddle-surfing one. Only for the absolute experts on a big board, and even then it'll be a battle.
After the 27th, things taper off. The 28th still has clean 4ft waves in the morning, but the magic fades. The last day with any real hope is Thursday the 30th, with a tiny 1ft groundswell of 17 seconds – that's a very long period, which means the energy is spread out and it'll be small and straight. Glassy conditions, but it's a session for the longboard or for a cruise.
So, for the whole 16 days, the only true standout is that Monday morning on the 27th. The rest is a mixture of average to poor. Newcastle Beach is very consistent, so it tends not to stay flat for long, but this run is a reminder that consistency doesn't always mean quality.
Rusty.
