Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
G'day, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what Newcastle Beach has got cookin' for us over the next couple of weeks.
Right now, it’s dead flat with only a tiny 1.0ft easterly dribble and a NW breeze that’s clean but offers nothing to ride. We’re looking at a couple of days of nothing before things start to fire up.
The real action kicks off on Saturday the 4th of July. Saturday morning is where it’s at. We’ve got a clean 3ft south swell, with a nice 12-second period – that’s some proper groundswell energy. The wind is a cross-offshore breeze from the WNW, almost glassy at 3 mph. Water temp is sitting at 67°, which is pretty much normal for this time of year. This is the first standout – a solid, clean beginner-friendly wave. The combined energy is moderate (290), and it’s going to be a fun, cruisy session.
Sunday the 5th gets messy. The swell jumps to 8ft, but it’s blown out by a strong S wind, making it lumpy and cross-onshore. This one’s for the experienced crew only, but the quality is poor.
Monday the 6th and Tuesday the 7th are a write-off with strong onshore and cross-shore winds, and the swell stays big and lumpy – not worth paddling out.
Wednesday the 8th of July morning is the second real standout. The swell drops to a solid 7ft from the SE at 10 seconds, but the wind is a clean cross-offshore from the SW at 9 mph. The combined energy is moderate (952) – it’s got some grunt. This is a clean, well-shaped wave that will have some punch for the more seasoned surfers. It’s not for beginners at this size, but the conditions are close to perfect.
After that, things settle down. Thursday the 9th and Friday the 10th are smaller and less consistent, with onshore winds creeping in during the afternoons. Saturday the 11th of July morning is another clean session with a small 4ft SE swell and a glassy WSW breeze – good for a longboard if you’re keen.
From Sunday the 12th, the surf pretty much goes to sleep. There’s a big gap of flat, small waves and average winds for several days. You’ll be waiting until Wednesday the 15th of July for any real hope. That morning shows a promising 6ft south swell with clean offshore WNW winds – very good conditions (647 combined energy).
But the biggest highlight of the whole outlook is Thursday the 16th of July. We’ve got a serious 10ft to 12ft SSE groundswell rolling in with a very long 13-second period (3947 combined energy). The wind is offshore or cross-offshore, clean as a whistle. This is a big, powerful, long-period swell – it’s going to be a feast for experienced surfers only. Beginners, stay well clear. It’s a bit far out, but if it holds, that Thursday afternoon is going to be an absolute scorcher. The swell drops off a bit on Friday the 17th, still clean and strong, but Saturday the 18th gets smashed by a strong SE onshore wind.
So, to wrap it up: Saturday morning the 4th of July for the beginners and intermediates, and Wednesday morning the 8th of July for a clean, solid session. The big one to circle on the calendar is Thursday the 16th of July – it’s a long-range promise, so keep an eye on it, but it could be the wave of the fortnight.
Rusty.
