The Lowdown
G'day, it's Rusty here. Let's look at the surf for Newcastle Beach. It's a beach and reef setup that's exposed to the swell and very consistent, so it's normally a reliable spot. Over the next 16 days, it's a real mixed bag. There's a rubbish run of conditions early, but it gets promising later.
The first bit is a write-off. Wednesday afternoon the 15th kicks off with 8ft south swell, short 10-second period, and a cross-on SSW wind at 19 mph. The water is 65°, about average for the time of year. The combined energy is strong at 1212, but it's just ugly. That carries through Thursday the 16th and Friday the 17th with messy, choppy conditions and cross-onshore winds. Not worth it.
Saturday the 18th and Sunday the 19th stay onshore with moderate breezes, holding 5ft to 7ft from the ESE and E, with moderate wave energy (300-883), but the wind keeps it lumpy.
Monday the 20th is a tease. The swell drops to 5ft from the east, 10-second period, but it's a cross-on ENE breeze at 6 mph. Energy is moderate at 565, but conditions are only marginal. Hold off.
The real standout is the morning of Tuesday the 21st. The swell is a modest 4ft from the east, 10-second period, but the wind swings to a light offshore NNW at 6 mph. Energy is moderate at 360, but with clean conditions, it's the best of the first week. The waves will be small but clean, perfect for a beginner-friendly session. Get on it early.
Wednesday the 22nd and Thursday the 23rd see the swell dropping below 3ft, energy falling to 177 and 100. The wind is light and clean on the mornings, but the surf is ordinary. The weekend of the 24th and 25th is tiny, down to 2ft. There's a glassy moment on the afternoon of Friday the 24th with a 2ft ENE swell, but barely surfable. Then a gap of a few days with no real recommendations.
The second week holds a surprise. Sunday morning the 26th sees a 2ft south swell with a very long 15-second period, and a light cross-offshore WNW wind at 3 mph. Energy is moderate at 200, and it's clean. The swell is small, but that long period will wrap in nicely on a point or reef, shaping up fun little runners. Promising but less certain.
The real goods come through on Thursday the 30th. The morning has a 6ft SSE swell with an 11-second period, and a light offshore NW wind at 9 mph. Energy is strong at 757. The waves will be clean, with good shape and power. This is the standout of the entire outlook. The afternoon gets even better, with a 5ft southerly swell, 11-second period, light NNW wind, and energy at 696. It's clean and glassy. This is the one to circle in the calendar.
So, overall, a lot of chop and wind early. The best window is the morning of Tuesday the 21st for a small, clean session, and the long-range highlight is Thursday the 30th with a solid, clean southerly swell. Stay patient.
Rusty.
