The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it. The forecast for Newcastle Beach is a real mixed bag, but there are a couple of windows that are going to be worth paddling out for.
The pattern starts off slow, but we’ve got a solid pulse of groundswell from the east kicking things off on Monday the 20th. Monday morning is the standout early in the period. The swell is a clean 5 ft from the east, with a period of 11 seconds, and the wind is glassy out of the ENE at just 3 mph. The water temp is about average for this time of year. The combined energy is moderate (699). That’s a really nice setup for a beginner-friendly beach and reef break. Expect some nice, clean lines with the glassy surface. The swell is 5 ft, so it’s a bit big for total beginners, but very doable for anyone with a bit of confidence. Crowds are often here, so don’t expect to have it to yourself.
Monday afternoon sees the wind swing to a light cross-onshore, and the quality drops off. Tuesday morning the 21st is still clean with a smaller 4 ft east swell and a light cross-offshore. It’s surfable, but the energy is much weaker (325). Wednesday the 22nd has tiny 3 ft waves from the ENE, with a very short period of 9 seconds. Thursday the 23rd is flat with almost no energy. A real gap.
Then things pick up again on Friday the 24th. Friday morning is a beauty. A new S swell hits 6 ft, with a period of 9 seconds. The wind is a clean cross-offshore from the west at 9 mph. The combined energy jumps to a strong 513. This is clean, punchy surf. The water is still around average temp. Friday afternoon goes glassy with the same 5 ft S swell, so the afternoon session could be magic.
Saturday the 25th has smaller 3-4 ft S swell, but the period on Saturday afternoon stretches to 12 seconds, which is a nice long-period groundswell. That’s going to be a bit more lined up, but with a light cross-onshore breeze, it’s not as clean as Friday.
Sunday the 26th is another standout. Sunday morning looks excellent. We’ve got a 6 ft S swell, period of 10 seconds, and a clean cross-offshore wind from the WSW. The energy is strong (519). That’s a great morning for a surf. The swell is 6 ft, so it’s on the limit for intermediates, but a good surfer will have a blast. The afternoon brings rain showers and a gusty onshore, so morning is the call.
The following week (Monday 27th to Wednesday 29th) is mostly small and ordinary, with swell dropping to 2-3 ft and very weak energy. Thursday the 30th is where it gets serious. Thursday morning has a massive 10 ft S swell with a period of 11 seconds. The wind is a strong cross-offshore (16 mph). The combined energy is a massive 2914. That’s strong, powerful surf. This is only for experts. The afternoon goes glassy with the same 10 ft S swell and 12-second period. That’s a very clean, powerful wave, but still only for experienced surfers.
Friday the 31st is the absolute peak of the entire forecast. Friday morning delivers a 10 ft S swell, period of 13 seconds, and a light cross-offshore wind. The combined energy is a massive 3145. That’s a very long period groundswell. This is point break territory, not a beach break. It will be a big, powerful, and clean wave. Experts only. Crowds are likely. The afternoon gets messy with a strong cross-onshore.
Saturday the 1st of August is still big, with 8 ft S swell, but the wind is onshore and there are rain showers. It’s messy. Sunday the 2nd is still big (8 ft) but also messy. The pattern finally settles on Monday the 3rd of August with a clean 6 ft SSE swell and glassy conditions. That’s a solid, clean option for the start of the new week.
The standout sessions are Monday morning July 20th for the glassy, clean east swell, and Friday morning July 24th for the clean, punchy S swell. The big daddy for experts is Friday morning July 31st — that’s a long period groundswell with clean conditions, but it’s a beast. The water temp is about average for the time of year.
