Table - best surf conditions forecast for Newcastle Beach over the next 16 days.
G’day, Rusty here. Look, it’s a bit of a mixed bag coming up for Newcastle Beach. We kick off with some mid-period SE swell, but the wind is a bit messy to start so we have to wait a couple of days for the real clean-up.
Wednesday the 8th is pretty ordinary – we’ve got a 8ft SE swell with an 11-second period, but the S wind at 9 mph is cross-on and it’s choppy. The combined swell energy is pumping at 1415 (moderate to strong), but the quality is just not there. Water temp’s sitting at 66°, which is about average for this time of year.
Thursday the 9th stays marginal, but the swell drops a touch. Friday the 10th morning is where it gets interesting. The wind swings to a light W at 6 mph, going cross-off, and the swell eases to a clean 5ft from the SE at 10 seconds. That’s your first real standout – clean lines, fun size, and not too heavy for a beginner. Combined energy is 595 (moderate), so there’s still some push. The morning session is the pick.
Saturday the 11th is also worth a paddle. Offshore NW wind at 9 mph keeps it clean. The swell drops to 4ft from the SE in the morning (9 seconds, combined energy 393), and by the afternoon it’s down to 3ft from the ESE with an 11-second period (344 energy). Still clean and glassy, but definitely smaller. Good for a longboard.
From Sunday the 12th through to Tuesday the 15th, the swell really fades. We’re talking 0.7ft to 2ft – tiny, ordinary conditions. Not worth getting wet. There’s a gap of a few days there where you’re better off doing something else.
Wednesday the 16th and Thursday the 17th look messy. A big onshore SSE swell arrives – 12ft on the 16th morning with strong SSE wind at 16 mph, and it’s raw onshore. Combined energy is 1462 (strong) but it’s a mess. That’s more of a kite-surfing setup than a paddle-friendly day. Friday the 17th is still onshore and ugly, and the weekend of the 18th/19th has solid 8ft SSE swell but with onshore wind again. Not good.
Spot the change on Monday the 21st July. The wind goes light offshore from the WNW at 3 mph, the swell is 5ft from the SE with an 11-second period (combined energy 554), and the forecast says “expect very good surf conditions”. That’s your second standout – clean, groomed, and fun. Get on it early.
After that, Tuesday the 22nd afternoon goes glassy – no wind at all, with a 3ft ESE swell and an 11-second period (250 energy). That’s a sneaky little session, though the swell is small.
So to sum it up: Friday the 10th morning and Monday the 21st July are the real highlights. Everything else is either too small, too messy, or blown out. Newcastle Beach (Newcastle) is a beach and reef setup and it stays pretty consistent, so once the wind sorts itself out, it’ll come good. Stay patient, mate.
Rusty.
