The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what’s on the table for Mission Beach.

Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – the next week and a half or so is looking pretty grim. We’ve got a real dry spell kicking off, so if you’re itching to paddle out, you’re going to be waiting a while. The first real glimmer of something surfable doesn’t show up until the tail end of the month.

We start with a long stretch of nothing. From Thursday the 20th of August all the way through to Friday the 28th of August, the waves are either non-existent or just plain junk. The swell is tiny, mostly around 1 ft to 3 ft, and the wind is almost always on it or cross-on, making for messy, blown-out conditions. The wave energy is weak, barely cracking 300 (306) at best. It’s just not worth getting wet.

Things get slightly more interesting as we head into the last weekend of August. Saturday the 29th of August sees a bump in energy, with the combined energy jumping up to 680. The swell picks up to about 3 ft to 3 ft from the southwest, which is the right direction for this spot. The period hangs around 15-17 seconds, so there’s a bit of groundswell in the mix. Now, the catch is the wind is still coming straight onshore from the west at about 6 mph. It’s not howling, but it’s not clean. Still, this stretch on Saturday and Sunday the 30th of August is probably the most promising we get. The wave state is described as marginal, but with the swell size holding around 3 ft, it’s worth a look for the more patient surfers. Don’t expect perfection, but there might be a few workable ones if you pick your tide right.

After that brief pulse, it fades again. From Monday the 1st of September onwards, we’re back into the small, onshore slop. The energy drops back into the low 300s, and the swell shrinks to 2 ft to 3 ft with mostly onshore wind. The last entry on Friday the 4th of September shows a shift in direction to a south swell, but the size is only 3 ft and the period is a short 11 seconds, so it’s not going to be any better.

So, to put it simply, there’s no real standout session here. If I had to point you to the least bad option, it would be the morning of Saturday the 29th of August. The swell is at its biggest for the whole forecast, with a decent period, and the wind is light. It’s a breakwater setup, so it can handle a bit of swell, and the southwest direction is exactly what it wants. The crowds can be an issue here, especially on a weekend, so expect company. It’s not going to be epic, but it’s the closest we get to a surfable wave in this whole 16-day window.

Rusty, signing off.
