Mirissa Surf Forecast and Surf Report

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks.

Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – the next week and a half is a bit of a struggle. We’ve got swell, no doubt about it, with combined wave energy sitting in the strong range (often between 1500 and 2200), and the swell direction is coming from the south and south-southwest, which is a good angle. But the problem is that wind. A steady 16 mph cross-shore from the West is blowing a lot of these sessions out, making it choppy. The first proper clean window doesn’t really show up until Sunday the 9th of August in the afternoon. Until then, it’s mostly cross-chop and stormy conditions, and the scores reflect that – it’s just not worth paddling out for the most part.

The standout moment across the whole outlook is definitely the last few days, from the 18th and especially the 19th of August. The swell is pumping up, and we’re seeing the strongest combined energy of the whole period, hitting 2900 and nearly 3000. That’s serious power. The wave heights are pushing 7 ft, and the wind finally turns favorable, going cross-offshore in the afternoon. This is where Mirissa (Sri Lanka) will be at its best. It’s a reef break, fairly consistent, and that south-southwest swell is right in its sweet spot.

The water’s sitting at 83°, with a positive anomaly of 2°, so it’s a touch warmer than average for this time of year. That’s a nice bonus. But don’t get too excited for the beginners. At 7 ft, this is getting up there – it’s going to be a proper session for experienced surfers only. The swell period is around 16 to 17 seconds, which is a long-period groundswell. That means clean, powerful lines with good shape, but long waits between sets. On a reef like Mirissa, that’s a dream setup, but on a beach break, that long period can make things close out. Here, it’s a positive.

The crowds are marked as "often" at Mirissa, so expect company. It’s a popular spot, and when the conditions line up like this, everyone will know. The Tuesday afternoon on the 19th looks like the pick of the bunch – clean conditions, solid 7 ft swell from the SSW, and that strong energy. The morning of the 19th is also good, but the wind is a bit more cross, so the afternoon has the edge.

Before that, the only other session that looks half-decent is the Sunday afternoon on the 9th of August. You’ve got 6 ft from the south, a 17-second period, and a cross-offshore breeze. The energy is strong at 2217. It’s a good session, but it’s not quite the peak of what’s coming. The Monday afternoon on the 10th also has a clean window, but the swell drops to 4 ft, so it’s smaller.

The period between the 12th and the 17th of August is a real lull. The swell drops off, the energy dips below 1000, and the wave heights are under 3 ft. There’s a bit of a clean spell on the 12th and 13th, but it’s tiny. Honestly, that’s a good time to rest, fix your gear, or go for a swim.

So, to wrap it up: the first week is a write-off thanks to the wind. The 9th and 10th offer a couple of clean, moderate sessions. But the real gold is sitting at the end of the outlook, on the 19th of August. Mark it in your calendar. Big swell, long period, clean wind, and a reef break that loves that direction. It’s going to be a good one.
