The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at the next 16 days for Mirissa. It’s a reef break, and it’s a fairly consistent, beginner-friendly wave. The water temp is sitting at 83°, which is pretty much bang on average for this time of year, so no surprises there.

Honestly, the outlook is a bit of a mixed bag. We’ve got a long run of south to south-southwest groundswell pushing through, but the wind is a real problem. For the first week and a half, it’s mostly a moderate cross-shore from the west, gusting 15 mph, with a cross-chop on the surface. That’s going to make things messy. The swell energy is solid, ranging from moderate to strong (1355 to 2153), but the conditions just aren't cooperating. A few afternoons on the 6th, 7th, and 9th of August do show a slight shift to a cross-offshore breeze from the WNW, which will clean things up a bit, but the scores are still low.

The best chance for a decent session looks like Sunday the 9th of August. The afternoon has that clean cross-offshore wind, 12 mph, with a 6 ft swell from the south at a very long 17 seconds. That’s proper groundswell energy. The combined energy is strong (2068). For a reef break like Mirissa, that long period will really line up and give you some nice, pushy waves. The crowds here are often, so you’ll have company, but that’s the price of a wave that works.

After the 12th, the swell drops off dramatically. The energy values fall into the 400-900 range, and the wave heights dip below 3 ft. Not much on offer. There’s a brief flicker of life on the 14th with another clean cross-offshore wind and a 4 ft SSE swell, but it’s weak. The 18th and 19th of August show a bit of a pulse again, with a rising swell from the south, but the energy is strong (up to 2500) and the wind stays cross. It’s a long way out, so it’s promising but less certain.

Overall, it’s a tough forecast. The first week is mostly a write-off due to wind. The standout is the afternoon of the 9th of August. If you can wait that long, that’s your window. Otherwise, it’s a lot of checking the forecast and hoping for a lucky break.

Rusty.
