The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here. Let’s break down what’s heading our way, in feet and miles per hour.

Straight up, it’s gonna be a tough stretch for clean waves. From Tuesday, August 4th, through the middle of the month, we’re dealing with rain, thunderstorms, and mostly onshore winds. The swell’s around, but the quality is rough. There are a few windows where things might be a little less messy, but nothing is firing.

Let’s start with Kalutara South – a river mouth break that’s fairly consistent but needs the right wind. Tuesday morning, August 4th, we’ve got a 4ft swell from the SSW with a very long period of 16 seconds – that’s proper groundswell. The combined energy is 1418, so there’s some grunt in the water. Water temp is 84°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year. The problem is the wind – onshore from the WSW at 12 mph with moderate rain. That’s gonna ruin the surface. It’s a 1 out of 10 situation – surfable but ugly.

The afternoon doesn’t help: still 4ft from the SSW, 16-second period, but a risk of thunderstorms. Wind drops to 9 mph but stays onshore. Marginal at best. The next few days through Thursday, August 6th, are more of the same – 5ft to 5ft swells, periods of 15-20 seconds, strong energy numbers up to 2147, but the wind stays onshore from the west. On Thursday morning, it’s outright “poor surf conditions.” Not worth getting wet.

By Friday, August 7th, the swell backs off to 5ft, but the west wind is still blowing 12 mph onshore. Energy is high (1778-1810), but the surface is going to be choppy and messy. For the first week, from August 4th to August 10th, it’s mostly poor or marginal. The Monday afternoon of August 10th might be your least worst option: 5ft from the south, 14-second period, energy at 1459, and a 9 mph onshore wind from the WSW. Still not clean, but it gets a 2 out of 10 – the highest score around that time. Not a standout, just the least ugly.

Now, there’s a bit of hope in the second week. Around Tuesday, August 18th and Wednesday, August 19th, things look a little better. On Tuesday afternoon, August 18th, we get a 4ft south swell with an 18-second period – very long period groundswell. The combined energy hits 2154 – moderate to strong energy. Wind is onshore from the west at 9 mph, but it’s a gentle breeze. The score is a 2 out of 10, which is the best we’ve seen. Wednesday, August 19th morning is similar: 4ft from the south, 16 seconds, energy at 2364 (strong wave energy), with a gentle onshore breeze. The afternoon is also a 2 out of 10, with a 4ft SW swell and a 17-second period. Given the rest of this forecast, those two days are the best on offer. The long period means the wave shape could be decent at a river mouth, but that onshore wind is still spoiling it. Don’t expect a glassy session.

Overall, there’s no true standout here. The 18th and 19th are your best bet, but keep expectations low. It’s not a classic run.

That’s the word from me. Don’t force it if the wind’s against you.

Rusty.
