The Lowdown
Alright, mate, Rusty here. Let’s have a proper look at what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, it’s a tough stretch ahead. There’s a long, frustrating gap at the start with no real surf to get excited about. From Thursday the 20th of August right through to the end of the month, we’re looking at a whole lot of nothing. The wind is mostly cross or cross-on, and the wave quality is just poor – messy, lumpy, and choppy. The swell energy is weak to moderate at best, with values like 81 to 303, and the period is all over the shop, but none of it lines up with decent conditions. You’d be better off staying home.
The good news is that the water temperature is sitting at a very pleasant 80°F, which is spot on for this time of year – no surprises there.
Now, the first real standout pops up on the morning of Wednesday, the 2nd of September. That’s when we finally see a bit of hope. The wind at Middles/Generals turns cross-off from the NNE at 16 mph, which is clean and glassy. The swell is 6 ft from the NE, with a period of 9 seconds, and the combined energy is a solid 696. It’s not huge, but it’s a clean, ridable wave for intermediate surfers. This is the pick of the bunch, no question.
The following morning, Thursday the 3rd of September, has a small, clean-ish window with a light cross-on breeze and 3 ft from the SSE, but it’s a bit small and inconsistent. Friday the 4th of September morning sees 5 ft from the ENE with a light cross-on breeze, but the period is short at 7 seconds, so it’s not going to hold much shape.
Overall, this is a long, quiet spell with only one proper session worth paddling out for. The rest of the time, the wind is too strong or the swell is too messy. If you’re an intermediate surfer, circle Wednesday the 2nd of September morning on your calendar – that’s your best shot.
Rusty.
