The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, looking at what's on the table for this stretch. Honestly, it’s a tough outlook for the next couple of weeks at Middles/Generals. We’ve got a long, frustrating stretch of poor conditions to work through before we can even start talking about anything that might be worth a paddle.
The issue right from the start is a persistent cross to cross-onshore wind hammering the break, making everything choppy and lumpy. We kick off Wednesday, the 15th, with tiny, weak swell. There’s a pulse of long-period SSW energy that shows up Thursday, the 16th, with a period of 16 seconds and moderate wave energy (397), but it’s getting smashed by a fresh 19 mph cross-breeze. The water temp is sitting at 79.2°, which is bang on average for this time of year, so nothing to write home about there.
This pattern continues day after day. We see some bigger numbers for combined energy—like 489 on Sunday the 19th—but it’s all wrapped in lumpy, cross-shore chop. That Sunday does see the swell height bump up to 4.9 ft to 5.2 ft, but with a short 8-second period and bad wind, the quality is just not there. For a spot exposed to the ESE, the wind is coming from the exact wrong direction, and the swell energy from that corner is weak. The stronger energy is coming from the SSW with those long periods (over 15 seconds), which would be great for a reef or point, but at a beach setup like this, it’ll just break too straight and be a mess in these winds.
We get a slight glimmer of hope into the very end of the forecast. From Saturday the 26th, the swell starts to look a bit more promising with a consistent E direction and a longer 16-second period. The combined wave energy jumps to strong values, hitting 1271 on Sunday morning and 1359 on Sunday afternoon, with swell heights around 3.9 ft to 4.3 ft. That’s moderate-to-strong energy (1271-1359). The catch? That ENE to NE cross-wind is still blowing 16 mph. It’s still lumpy, and the forecast notes just “marginal” conditions. If you’re desperate for a wave and can handle a bit of chop, Sunday the 26th into Monday the 27th is the best the entire run has to offer, but it’s far from a standout.
Honestly, for the most part, this setup looks more interesting for someone on a kite than a paddle surfer. The prevailing cross-breeze and decent energy coming from the south are more suited to that. The crowds are *often* a factor here, so when it’s this frustrating, you can expect company even when the waves aren’t great.
Stick it out, keep an eye on the wind forecasts, and maybe look for a different bank. That’s all she wrote for now.
