The Lowdown
G’day, I’m Rusty. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up for Middles/Generals.
Right off the bat, we’ve got a pretty grim run ahead. The forecast kicks off but there’s barely a wave worth paddling for until the very end of the period. From Friday 21 August right through to the start of September, it’s a long stretch of poor surf conditions. The wind is mostly a fresh cross-shore or cross-on from the ENE, and the swell is weak and short period, under 8 seconds, with combined energy readings mostly under 500 (moderate energy at best, but the shape is just messy). The water temperature is about 80°F, which is average for this time of year. For the first week and a half, you’re looking at lumpy, cross-chop conditions with small, weak waves – not worth suiting up.
Then, around Monday 31 August, things get interesting – but only for the experienced crew. A solid ENE swell pushes in, with heights up to 10ft to 12ft and combined energy a massive 2133 to 2779 (strong to very strong energy). The wind stays cross-shore and fresh, but the swell is too big for this break, so only experts should even think about it. The period is 10 to 11 seconds, so it’s a decent groundswell, but it’s going to be a beast. That’s the standout – if you’re confident and hungry, that Monday is your shot.
The rest of the first week of September is still pretty average – cross-onshore winds, moderate energy, and swell around 5ft to 7ft, but the quality is poor. The last day in the forecast, Saturday 5 September, shows a slight improvement with a light breeze and a little more period (11 to 12 seconds), but it’s only marginal with combined energy around 677 to 745 (moderate). Still not great.
Overall, the only real standout in this 16-day window is that big swell on Monday 31 August – but it’s not for the faint-hearted. The rest is a write-off. Stay patient, and maybe save your energy for that one big day.
Rusty.
