The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's talk about what's on the table for the next couple of weeks.
First off, I’m looking at a long, tough stretch right out of the gate. We’ve got a solid blank run from Thursday the 16th all the way through to Wednesday the 22nd. That’s a full week of pretty much nothing worth paddling out for. The wind is a constant problem, locked in from the ENE or NE at 16 to 22 mph, and it’s just cross the whole time, keeping the surface lumpy and chop. The swell is either tiny or short-period junk, and the energy is weak to moderate (271 to 938). The water temp is about average for the time of year, nothing unusual there.
Things start to shift a little on Thursday the 23rd. The swell picks up a bit, but it’s still a messy cross-shore situation. The energy is starting to build (1104 to 1205), but it’s marginal at best. The real interest begins from Tuesday the 28th onwards. The wind finally backs off a touch, dropping to 12 mph from the NE, and the swell is a bit more solid at 5 ft to 5 ft out of the ENE with a period of 13 seconds. That’s a mid-period groundswell, which is a step up. The energy is moderate (1172 to 1184). It’s still cross-shore, but the lighter breeze makes it more manageable. The best of the window looks like Wednesday the 29th morning. We’ve got a 6 ft ENE swell with a period of 11 seconds, and the wind is a gentle cross-shore breeze from the ENE at 9 mph. The water will be clean, and the energy (964) is moderate. That’s the standout moment, but it’s a long way off and the forecast is less certain at that range.
For the whole period, the only break in the game is Middles/Generals. It’s a fairly consistent spot, exposed to ESE swell, but the optimum swell direction is ESE, and we’re getting ENE or E swells, so it’s not the best angle. The best morning on offer would be Wednesday the 29th, with a 6 ft ENE swell, a gentle cross-shore, and cleaner conditions. It’s not going to be world-class, but it’s the best of a rough bunch. Just know that the crowds are likely to be there, as it’s often packed.
Rusty.
