The Lowdown
Alright, grab your board, let's talk about the next couple of weeks. We're looking at Middles/Generals here, and honestly, it's a bit of a mixed bag. The water is sitting at 80°, which is pretty much bang on average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
The pattern for the next week or so is pretty grim. We've got a persistent ENE breeze blowing, and it's never going offshore. It's all cross-shore, cross-on, or just plain messy, and the wave comment is consistently "poor surf conditions." The swell is a mix of short-period, wind-affected junk with some longer-period energy sneaking in from the south, but the wind just ruins it. The combined energy is moderate, climbing from the low hundreds up into the 500s (547), but it's all messy cross-chop. Don't get your hopes up for the first week.
Come the 24th of July, the swell starts to get a bit more oomph, with the combined energy hitting 744, but that northeasterly wind is still there, keeping things lumpy.
Now, the 27th of July Monday, things start to look a bit more interesting. The combined energy jumps to 1992, and we're looking at a 5 ft swell from the east with a 16-second period. That's a long-period groundswell, which is promising, but it's still cross-on and lumpy. The next day, the 28th of July Tuesday morning, is the standout. The combined energy is massive at 3062, with a solid 8 ft swell from the ENE at 14 seconds. The wind is from the NE at 16 mph, which is cross-shore, but it's a moderate breeze so it's a bit better. This is a big, powerful swell, and at 8 ft, it's really only for the experienced crew. The crowd factor is "often," so expect some company if you're game.
The 30th of July Thursday morning also looks like a decent option. The combined energy is 1080, with a 6 ft swell from the ENE at 12 seconds. The wind drops to a moderate 12 mph from the NE, still cross-shore but a bit cleaner. It's a solid, manageable size.
Overall, the best bet on offer is the 28th of July Tuesday morning. It's the biggest, most powerful swell of the window, and despite the cross-shore wind, it's the most promising. Keep an eye on the end of the month, but don't hold your breath for perfection.
