The Lowdown
Imperial version
Alright, let’s switch to feet and miles. Rusty here, looking at Middles/Generals for the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, the first week is a total washout. Starting Sunday 19 July: 5ft of short-period ENE windswell (8 seconds) with a fresh cross-shore wind – lumpy, choppy, no good. Monday and Tuesday are the same story: cross-shore wind, small swell, poor conditions. The swell tries to turn into a long-period S groundswell (14–16 seconds) on Monday afternoon and Tuesday, but it’s only 3–3ft and still cross-shore. Combined energy is moderate (around 482–499), but the wind kills it.
Wednesday 22 July morning: 4ft ENE windswell, cross-shore. Then a weird spike Wednesday afternoon: 2ft SSW swell with a 23-second period, energy 904 – a lot of energy for a small wave, but fresh cross-shore wind ruins it.
Thursday 23 July morning: 6ft ENE swell, 12 seconds, but the wind goes cross-onshore and strong (25 mph), making it a messy, blown-out disaster. Combined energy 1466 – strong – but it’s more of a kite-surfing setup than a paddle session.
Friday 24 July: 8ft ENE windswell, 7 seconds, strong cross-shore wind, energy 1005. Over 8ft, so expert-only, but the wind is awful.
The first hint of something surfable comes Saturday 25 July morning: 6ft ENE swell, 8 seconds, still cross-shore but wind drops to a fresh breeze. Score 1 – marginal. Conditions are lumpy but it’s the best so far.
Sunday 26 July morning: 3ft E swell, very long 17 seconds, energy 1353 (strong), but cross-shore wind. Sunday afternoon: 4ft E swell, 16 seconds, energy 1780 – very strong energy – still cross-shore. Monday 27 July: 5ft E swell, 15 seconds, cross-shore, energy 1558. Tuesday 28 July: 5–6ft E swell, 13 seconds, cross-shore, energy 1180. All marginal (score 1). The combined energy is strong but the wind keeps the surface messy.
The best shot is Wednesday 29 July morning: 6ft ENE swell, 12 seconds, moderate cross-shore breeze (16 mph), score 2 – the highest in the whole 16-day window. Combined energy 1075. Still not clean, but the wind is lighter and the swell has some punch. That’s your best bet, but it’s far from ideal.
After that, the rest of July and into August is poor: small windswell, cross-shore, no real improvement. The final record on Monday 3 August shows 4ft E swell, 16 seconds, moderate cross-shore wind, energy 953 – still poor.
So there’s a long gap of nearly a week with nothing. The break is fairly consistent, but the conditions just aren’t lining up. The standout is Wednesday 29 July morning, but it’s a marginal call. I’d leave the board on the car unless you’re desperate for a lumpy, cross-shore session. Forecasts can change, but for now, it’s a waiting game.
Rusty.
