The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s talk surf for the next couple weeks.
To be honest, it’s a rough run for Middles/Generals. The first week and a half is mostly a bust with onshore and cross-shore winds wreckin’ the surface. Even when the swell shows up, the wind keeps it messy.
It starts Tuesday the 14th with a weak 3ft easterly swell, real short period, and a moderate cross breeze from the NE at 16 mph. The water’s choppy and the energy’s weak (182). That sets the tone. Wednesday and Thursday are more of the same – small swell, cross and cross-on winds blowing 12 to 19 mph, and lumpy conditions.
By Saturday the 18th, the swell picks up to 5ft from the ENE, but the wind is a fresh 22 mph cross. The energy is moderate (319-412), but it’s still bumpy. Sunday the 19th sees the biggest surf of the first week at 6ft ENE, but again with that fresh cross wind. That’s gettin’ big for beginners, but with the chop, it’s not great for anyone on a paddleboard. Might be one for the kite surfers.
The second week has better swell quality. From Monday the 21st, the swell shifts to the south and southeast with periods stretchin’ out to 13-17 seconds – real groundswell. The energy numbers climb into the strong range, between 487 and 1081. But here’s the problem: the wind stays cross from the ENE or NE at 16-22 mph every session. Every single one.
The best chance comes Friday the 24th afternoon. A 3ft easterly swell with a 17-second period – that’s a very long-period groundswell. The combined energy is 1081. The call is “marginal.” That’s as good as it gets. The direction is close to the preferred ESE, and the break handles an east swell. If there was any offshore or light wind, this would be the one, but with the cross breeze it’s a gamble. The break is fairly consistent and exposed, so the swell will hit.
Water temp is about average for this time of year, nothin’ crazy.
Bottom line: no clear standout. The second half of the outlook has the best energy and period, but the wind is the enemy. If you’re keen, keep an eye on Friday the 24th. Otherwise, this is a rough patch.
Rusty.
