The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for Mechihonas over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – this stretch is looking pretty grim. The entire 16-day window is a blank run for good surf. The water temp is sitting at 73°, which is about normal for this time of year, but that’s about the only thing that’s average. The wind is a constant problem. It’s howling from the north and north-northeast, and it’s always onshore, never letting up. That means the surface is gonna be a mess, and the waves are gonna be chopped up and ugly.
The swell is constantly coming from the north, with a short period of only 6 to 8 seconds. That’s not a groundswell, that’s just wind chop. The energy is weak on the edges, but it does build to moderate levels mid-week. But all that energy is useless when the wind is trashing it. Even when the swell gets a bit bigger – 6 ft around Saturday the 15th of August – the conditions are still rated as poor. The wave commentary is a broken record: “poor surf conditions” over and over again.
Mechihonas is a consistent reef break, but with this constant onshore wind and short-period north swell, there’s just nothing on offer. The whole forecast is a write-off for a paddle surfer. If you’re a kite surfer, this strong onshore wind and building swell might get you excited, but for a surfboard? Forget it. The forecast can always change, but as it stands, this is a solid stretch of no-go.
Rusty.
