Matsube Bay Surf Forecast and Surf Report

Alright, we’ve got a solid window of swell coming in to Matsube Bay, a reef break that’s for the advanced crew. It’s inconsistent, so you’ve gotta be patient and pick your moments. The water is sitting at a warm 81°, which is pretty much what you’d expect for this time of year, nothing weird going on there.

The action kicks off on Tuesday, the 4th of August. We’re looking at a solid 12ft groundswell out of the SE, with a long 16-second period. There’s a heap of energy in the water (combined energy: 6398) but the wind is a cross-shore at 19 mph, so it’s going to be lumpy and a bit of a battle. It’s surfable for the experienced, but don’t expect it to be pretty.

The standout window is the morning of Wednesday, the 5th. The swell hangs around 13ft from the SE, with a 15-second period, still a massive amount of energy (7353). The real kicker is the wind, which goes clean, cross-offshore from the NNE. This is the best condition we’ll see in the whole run. For the advanced surfer, this is the session to aim for. The afternoon goes back to a cross-shore, so get it in the morning.

The following days are a bit of a mixed bag. Thursday the 6th sees the swell drop to 10ft, and the wind is onshore or cross-shore, making it marginal. Friday the 7th and Saturday the 8th are similar, with onshore winds and a risk of thunderstorms, so the quality won’t be there. The swell drops further to the 7ft to 8ft range, still with decent energy, but the wind is mostly onshore or cross-onshore, leaving it choppy.

Monday the 10th is another interesting one. The swell is down to 7ft from the SW, but the period is a very long 17 seconds. The wind is a clean cross-offshore again, but it’s blowing a strong 25 mph. That’s a lot of wind, so it’ll be a wild session, but the waves will have plenty of punch. The energy is still high (6186), so it’s for the hardcore only.

Tuesday the 11th is a write-off. The wind is a near-gale at 31 mph, and the surf is considered poor. Don’t bother.

The end of the second week and into the third week gets a bit more interesting again. From the 18th of August, we see a new swell building. Tuesday the 18th morning has a solid 12ft from the ESE, with a 12-second period and a lot of energy (3484). The wind is a cross-shore at 19 mph, so it’s going to be lumpy, but there’s size. The 19th of August cleans up with a cross-offshore wind, but it’s a strong breeze, so it’s a raw, windy day.

Overall, the best bet is that Wednesday morning, the 5th of August. That’s the one. For the rest of the run, it’s a lot of waiting for clean windows between the wind. The inconsistency of the break means you’ll be sitting out there for a while, but the energy is there.
