The Lowdown
Hey, Rusty here. Gotta be straight with you – the outlook for Lalafatna over the next 16 days is a pretty rough one. There are no good surf options in the window, so let’s break down the reality of what’s going on.
From now until the 23rd of August, the wind is the enemy. It’s hammering from the north-northeast and north, blowing cross to cross-onshore, keeping every session lumpy and poor. There’s swell, sure, but it’s all short-period windswell, never longer than 10 seconds. The water is also very cold for the time of year; at 67°F it’s a full 4°F below normal (much colder than normal). That’s a big, noticeable shift and a real shock to the system for a paddle-out.
The combined swell energy starts out weak in the 140s (moderate wave energy), then builds. Around the 14th of August there’s a pulse of 11-second swell from the north-west, boosting the energy to 306 (moderate wave energy), but it’s still choked by messy winds. By the 20th of August the energy hits 328 (moderate wave energy) with a 5ft north-northwest swell at 9 seconds, and the winds look like they might finally lighten up. On the morning of the 21st we finally get a "marginal" reading – a light breeze from the south-west and a cross-shore condition. But it’s a 1 out of 10, so it’s hardly a green light. After that, it’s back to the same old cross-onshore chop.
There’s nothing to recommend in this stretch. The spot is consistent, but the wind and swell just have no chemistry. For a beginner break, this is a total washout. Honestly, with the wind so persistent and the beach setup, it’s looking more like a kitesurfing zone than a place to paddle.
Stay patient, check back, the forecasts can switch up. Rusty out.
