The Lowdown
Alright, let’s talk surf. This area is in a flat spell. The first real chance of a wave doesn’t show up until Thursday, July 30th, and even then it’s a marginal call. There’s more than a week of tiny, weak surf to sit through before that. So, don’t be in a hurry.
The only break we’re looking at is Kaolins, an advanced reef that doesn’t break often. It’s inconsistent, so this blank run is normal. The water temp is 69°F, which is a solid 5°F warmer than usual for this time of year – that’s very unusual, so a spring suit or a shorty will be fine.
For the first week, from Saturday, July 18th through Wednesday, July 29th, it’s a write-off. Swell is tiny, around 0.7ft to 1.0ft, with combined wave energy barely registering (9 to 12). The wind is mostly offshore or clean, but there’s no water moving. It’s a total flat spell.
Now, a glimmer of hope. On Thursday, July 30th, the morning shows a pulse of 4ft swell from the WNW, with a period of 9 seconds. The combined energy jumps to a moderate 315. The wind is light from the north, making it cross-off and clean. For a rare-breaking reef like Kaolins, this is the standout window. The swell direction is from the west-northwest, close to its optimum southwest, so it might just wrap in. It’s not huge, but it’s the only time we see a "good surf conditions" note. Thursday morning is the pick.
After that, Friday, July 31st morning has moderate offshore winds and a 3ft west swell (158 energy), but it’s a downgrade from Thursday. The weekend into early August drops back to weak, inconsistent waves in the 2ft to 2ft range.
So, here’s the bottom line: if you’re an advanced surfer and you’re itching for a wave, mark Thursday, July 30th for a dawn session at Kaolins. It’s not a classic, but it’s the only real game in town. The rest of the 16 days is a waiting game.
