Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for Kaolins.
Honestly, it’s a pretty grim start. We’re looking at a solid two-week stretch of really poor conditions. The swell just isn’t cooperating, and the wind is rarely on our side. From now, right through to the 18th of July, you’ll be lucky to get something surfable. There’s a few mornings with clean conditions and light offshore breezes—like the morning of the 14th of July—but the swell is tiny, barely 2 ft from the west. Not worth paddling out for, if I’m honest.
We’re not seeing any real energy in the water. The combined swell energy is stuck in the double digits or lower triple digits for most of this period, which is weak. It’s not doing anyone any favours.
The first real glimmer of hope is the morning of Saturday the 18th of July. We’ve got glassy conditions and a little bump in energy—combined energy around 159 (moderate)—with a 3 ft west swell. But it’s short period, just 10 seconds, and the wind turns messy by the afternoon. It’s surfable, but only just.
Then, on the morning of Sunday the 20th of July, things get a bit more interesting. That’s the standout, but it comes with a warning. We’re looking at a 5 ft swell from the west, and combined energy is up to 417 (strong). The wind though is a fresh cross-shore, which is going to chop things up. The swell's period is 9 seconds, so it’s not a long-period groundswell. This one is for experienced surfers only—that size with messy wind will be a handful. The morning of the 20th is the best, but it’s not exactly a classic day.
Kaolins is a reef break, and it’s inconsistent. When it works it can be a gem, but right now the stars aren’t aligned. The water temp is about 63°, which is normal for this time of year.
So, if you’re desperate, the 20th of July morning is your only real shout, but keep your expectations low. It’s been a long dry spell, and it might not stay this way forever—forecasts can change.
Rusty.
