Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the table for our little patch.
Well, I gotta be straight with you – this stretch from July 7th right through to July 22nd is looking like a real struggle. We’ve got a long, dry spell with no proper surf to speak of. The first recommendation doesn’t pop up for quite a while, and even then, it’s nothing to get excited about. The whole period is filled with “poor surf conditions” across the board. We’re looking at a solid week and a half of flat, weak dribble. It’s one of those blank runs you just have to sit through.
There is a glimmer of something on the horizon, but you gotta be patient. The one and only break worth a mention is Kaolins, a tricky reef setup for advanced surfers only, and it’s inconsistent. It's fairly exposed to the swell, but it loves a swell from the southwest.
Now, the best shot we get comes late in the game, around Friday, July 17th. On the Friday morning, we see some southwest swell starting to push in around 4 ft, with a period of 7 seconds. That combined energy jumps up to 261 (moderate wave energy), which is the most grunt we see in the whole forecast. But, and it’s a big but, Friday morning has that swell coming with a strong cross-onshore wind from the west at 12 mph, which will chop it up. Friday afternoon gets even worse with a full onshore wind from the WSW at 25 mph. That combo, for a beach-and-reef setup like this, looks far more interesting for kite surfing than for anything with a paddle. It’s going to be messy and only for the experts if the tide lines up.
Then, on Monday, July 20th, we get another pulse. The morning shows some 3 ft southwest swell (period 7 seconds, combined energy 130), but it’s accompanied by moderate rain. The afternoon picks up to 4 ft from the same direction (period 8 seconds, energy 245), but a fresh cross-shore wind from the northwest at 19 mph will leave a lumpy, cross-chop on the surface. Nothing clean.
For the rest of the time, the swell is tiny – we’re talking 0.3 ft to 2 ft scraps with weak energy, often with poor wind. The water temperature is about 64°F, which is pretty spot on for this time of year – no shocking anomalies here to warm you up.
So, the standout – if you can call it that – is the Friday, July 17th morning session at Kaolins. It’s not great, and it’s only for the experienced crew who don’t mind a battle with the wind. But follow that with a decent Monday, July 20th as a secondary option. Other than that, save your petrol.
Rusty.
