The Lowdown
Gather 'round, crew. Rusty here. This is a tough one to write. We’re looking at a grim 16-day window for the only spot that's showing up – Kaolins. It’s an advanced reef break that's known for being inconsistent, so when it's good, it's a treat, but when it's shut down like this? It's a real bummer.
Right now, the water is running a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, sitting at 68°.
We start with no surf on offer at all. Wednesday and Thursday are a write-off – messy, wobbly, and onshore. The swell is small and weak, with combined energy values barely cracking 100 (78 on Wednesday morning). Not worth a paddle.
Friday the 21st is a bit of a tease. The swell picks up a touch to 5ft from the WNW, with a period of 10 seconds (that's decent groundswell), and the combined energy jumps to 627. But the wind is a cross-on, and it's lumpy. It's a no-go.
The weekend and into the middle of the next week is a total flat spell. The swell drops to 2ft on Saturday the 22nd, and then we're stuck in the 0.7ft to 1.0ft range from Sunday the 23rd all the way through Tuesday the 25th. The wind is offshore or clean in the mornings, but there's just no wave energy to work with. The combined energy drops into the single digits.
Then, things get weird. Wednesday the 26th sees a jump in swell to 6ft from the SW (8 seconds), with combined energy at 965. But the wind is a strong cross-onshore, making it a total mess. This continues through the end of the month. The swell gets bigger – 7ft, 8ft, even 10ft on Monday the 31st of August, with a very long period of 12 seconds and a massive combined energy of 2306. But the wind is always cross-on, onshore, or just messy. This is dangerous, unsurfable, and looks more like a kite-surfing gig than a paddle session.
The only glimmer of hope comes on Sunday, the 30th of August. The afternoon shows 6ft from the WSW (8 seconds) with a combined energy of 734, and the wind is a clean cross-off. That's a standout moment, the only one in the whole 16 days. It's still a bit of a gamble because the morning is messy, but that afternoon session is your best bet. The crowd at Kaolins is a "sometimes" thing, so on a Sunday afternoon with a bit of swell, you might not be alone.
The last few days into the start of September are more of the same – waves but with onshore winds ruining the party. The morning of September 1st has a 8ft WSW swell with an 11-second period, and a cross-shore wind, which is the last chance for a marginal go.
Honestly, the whole run is blank. There are no other breaks to compare it to. When a spot is this inconsistent, having a 16-day run of poor conditions is more normal than not. Keep your eyes on the charts, because it won't stay poor forever, but right now, leave the boards in the car.
Rusty.
