The Lowdown
Alright mate, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for the Kaolins reef break.
It’s a pretty bleak start, to be honest. For the first week and a half, there’s nothing worth paddling out for. The swell is on the small side, but the real killer is the wind – it’s blowing cross-on or onshore from the west and southwest for days on end, making a mess of things. The waves are all below 3 ft, and mostly just poor, lumpy, or choppy. You’ll be sitting on the beach for that.
A bit of a pulse shows up around the 27th of August, with the swell building to 7 ft from the WSW, and the combined energy jumping to 493 (moderate). But the wind is still a fresh cross-onshore from the west, making it a choppy, lumpy mess, so it’s a no-go. By the 28th, it gets even bigger, with 10 ft from the WSW and a massive combined energy of 1233 (very strong). That’s expert territory, but the same cross-onshore wind means it’s just a blown-out beast. Not a paddle surfer’s dream – that setup looks more interesting for kite surfing.
The only real standout in this whole 16-day window is a brief window on the morning of Friday the 4th of September. The swell is a clean 5 ft from the WSW, with a period of 8 seconds, and the combined energy is a solid 309 (moderate). The kicker is the wind: glassy. Absolutely glassy from the east. That’s the one moment where the Kaolins reef will be smiling. It’s not a huge swell, but with perfect conditions, it’ll be clean and fun. Keep in mind this break is inconsistent, and it’s an advanced spot, so don’t expect a crowd, but it’s still possible.
After that, the swell drops back down and the wind turns onshore again, so the window closes fast. The rest of the second week is small and average, with the 3rd of September showing an 8 ft SW swell, but again, cross-on. The water temperature is around 67°, which is about normal for this time of year.
So, if you’re keen, mark your calendar for the morning of the 4th of September. That’s your best bet. Everything else is a write-off.
Rusty.
