Alright, grab a coffee and let’s get into it. Rusty here.
Look, I’ll be straight with you – the next couple of weeks at Kaolins is a tough one. We’ve got a long, quiet spell to start with. From now through the first week, there’s just no love from the ocean. The swell is tiny, the energy is weak, and the wind, when it’s not rubbish, is just messy. The first real chance you’ll have to even think about paddling out doesn’t show up until Sunday the 19th of July, so that’s a solid two-week gap with nothing worth chasing. It’s one of those blank runs that can happen here, and it feels like a proper dry spell.
Now, when we finally do get something, it comes with a catch. On Sunday the 19th of July, a south-west swell pushes in, averaging around 5 ft (combined swell energy of 203). That’s a proper bump, but the period is short at 6 seconds – that’s windswell, not groundswell, so it won’t have that grunt you want. The morning looks your best shot with a light cross-onshore breeze keeping it rideable. But hold on – by the afternoon, the wind absolutely howls from the WSW at 22 mph, the swell jumps to 8 ft (combined swell energy of 1150), and it’s going to be lumpy, choppy, and a real handful. That afternoon session is strictly for the experienced crew only.
Then Monday the 20th of July, the swell is still hanging around at 5 ft, period still short (8 seconds), combined swell energy at 284, and the wind is light again from the west. It’s a bit better, cleaner, but still just a mediocre option.
Best on offer? Honestly, there’s no standout here. If you’re desperate, the Sunday morning on the 19th is the only window where the size and the wind are borderline okay, but don’t expect much. The crowd factor is a worry too – it can get busy on a Sunday. At 5 ft it’s not huge, but given the short period and onshore angle, it’s not a beginner wave.
No other breaks are offering anything up at all. It’s a grim forecast, folks. Forecasts can change, but for now, you’re better off finding something else to do until that third week shows up.
Rusty.
