The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it.
We’re looking at a pretty grim run for Kaolins, and honestly, it’s a tough one to call. The wave energy is just not there for the first week and a half, with a whole lot of weak, short-period slop. The setup is a reef break that’s fairly exposed, but the wind and swell just aren’t lining up until much later in the window.
The water temp is sitting at 67°F with a minor anomaly of 1°F, so that’s about average for the time of year. Nothing to write home about.
The first real sign of life doesn’t show up until Wednesday, September 2nd. On the morning of the 2nd, we finally get a clean window with a light offshore breeze from the ENE at 6 mph. That’s the only time the wind is truly blowing offshore. The swell will be a solid 8 ft from the SW, period around 9 seconds, which is a decent groundswell. The combined energy reading is 844, which is moderate to strong. This is the standout of the whole 16-day run. It’s a big swell – over 8 ft, so really only for the experienced crew. The direction is bang on from the SW, which is the optimum. It’s inconsistent by nature here, so don’t expect endless waves, but when they come, they’ll be clean. The crowds are a possibility here, so be prepared to share.
The rest of the window is a write-off. We have a huge swell event around August 27th to 28th, with wave energy hitting 4655, but the winds are a mess – strong cross-onshore making it lumpy and messy. That’s a kite-surfing setup, not a paddling one. The surf quality is poor across the board, with constant onshore or cross-onshore winds, short periods, and choppy conditions. The gap between the first decent surf and the standout on the 2nd of September is effectively the whole first week, with nothing worth paddling out for.
So, bottom line: if you’re an expert and you can wait, the morning of Wednesday, September 2nd is your only real shot. The 8 ft SW swell with offshore wind will be clean, but it’s inconsistent and the crowds might be there. Everything else is a no-go.
Rusty.
