The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ve gotta be straight with you—this 16-day window for Kaolins is a proper write-off. There’s no surf worth paddling out for, not a single session that’s gonna get the stoke going. The whole run is a bit of a bummer, with a big gap of nothingness from now all the way through to the 7th of September. Every single forecast slot comes back as “poor surf conditions,” scoring a flat zero out of ten. It’s the kind of run that’s more normal for this area, so don’t kick yourself—forecasts can change, but right now, it’s a blank.
Let’s look at what’s happening. The water temp is about average for the time of year, so that’s not adding to the misery. The swell is tiny, mostly 1 ft to 1 ft from the west or southwest, with periods all over the place—short 6-8 second stuff, some longer 10-12 second pulses, but it’s all weak. The combined wave energy barely cracks 20 to 87 for most of the first week, which is feeble (weak energy). Winds are a nightmare for quality surf: cross-off, cross-on, or onshore, often fresh breezes or stronger, making it messy and lumpy. There’s a brief moment on the 24th afternoon where the wind drops off and goes offshore from the NE, but the swell is still only 1 ft—too small to do anything with. On the 27th and 28th of August, the swell jacks up to 8 ft to 10 ft from the SW, with moderate to strong energy (790 to 1255), but it’s all onshore wind, risk of thunderstorms, and the breaks are rated for advanced surfers only. With that size and onshore junk, it’s more of a kitesurfing look than a paddle surf setup. The 7th of September sees a 3 ft swell from the west with a 12-second period—moderate energy (174)—but again, cross-onshore winds ruin it.
So, no standout sessions. The best you could hope for is the 2nd of September morning, with a light offshore from the NNE and clean conditions, but the swell is only 2 ft—barely a ripple. Or the 3rd of September morning, glassy conditions with a 1 ft swell, but that’s just a flat spell. Nothing to get excited about.
This reef break is inconsistent at the best of times, and crowds are possible, but honestly, there’s nothing here to draw anyone in. Keep an eye on the charts, but for now, leave the boards in the shed.
Rusty.
