The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this stretch is looking bleak. The only break on the menu is Kaolins, a fairly exposed advanced reef setup that’s inconsistent and can be a bit of a tease. The water’s sitting at 68°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so that’s one small comfort.
Right off the bat, there’s nothing for the first few days. Thursday the 20th and Friday the 21st are all poor surf conditions with moderate to fresh cross-onshore winds and choppy, lumpy lines. Swell is around 4ft to 5ft from the west, but the wind just ruins it. Saturday the 22nd drops to tiny 2ft to 2ft, and while the wind goes light, the energy is pathetic (38 to 50). Sunday the 23rd through Monday the 24th are cleaner with cross-off winds, but swell is only 1.0ft to 1ft and energy is in the weak teens and twenties – not worth paddling out.
Tuesday the 25th gets a bit more interesting in the afternoon when a 7ft SSW swell arrives with a short 7-second period, but the wind goes onshore and there’s a risk of thunderstorms. The energy jumps to 408, but conditions are still poor. Wednesday the 26th morning sees the biggest swell so far – 8ft from the SW with energy of 1371 – but it’s cross-shore, choppy, and marginal at best. The afternoon drops to 5ft with onshore wind; still nothing to get excited about.
From Thursday the 27th all the way through to the end of the first week, it’s a sad story. Thursday brings 5ft to 7ft but cross-onshore winds and fresh chop. Friday the 28th and Saturday the 29th are more of the same – 5ft to 6ft, with fresh cross-onshore winds and lumpy conditions. Sunday the 30th pushes 7ft to 7ft with onshore wind and risk of storms. The energy is moderate but the quality is poor.
Now, the second week starts with a standout on Monday the 31st. Swell jumps to 7ft to 7ft from the WSW with a long 12-second period. The energy is strong (1145 to 2409), which is a lot of power. But here’s the catch – it’s cross-onshore and choppy, and the break is an advanced reef. This size and period will be too big for beginners and really only for experts. The wind is not clean, so it’s not going to be the classic Kaolins day. Tuesday the 1st of September sees the swell back off to 4ft with a clean cross-off wind in the afternoon, but it’s only marginal. The rest of the week from Wednesday the 2nd to Friday the 4th is back to tiny 2ft to 3ft with fresh cross-shore winds and weak energy. There’s just no good window here.
Honestly, this is a tough run. The only real power shows up on the 31st, but the wind spoils it. Kaolins is inconsistent and rarely breaks clean, so this blank run isn’t surprising. The best advice? Keep an eye on the forecasts, because this area can change quick, but for now, I’d suggest finding something else to do.
Rusty.
