Table - best surf conditions forecast for Kaolins over the next 16 days.
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you — the next week and a half is pretty flat and sad. We’re looking at a long, drawn-out stretch of small, weak swell and mostly onshore or cross-onshore wind, with next to nothing worth paddling out for. The break we’ve got here is Kaolins — a tricky, inconsistent reef setup that only breaks now and then — so when it’s this quiet, it’s no surprise. The first real glimmer of hope doesn’t show up until Sunday the 19th, and even then it’s ordinary.
Monday 13 July starts off with a tiny 2 ft SW swell (30 combined energy), cross-off wind but just not enough push. That theme carries through the whole week. Tuesday and Wednesday see even smaller stuff — 1 ft to 2 ft — all cross-on, choppy, and weak. Thursday is more of the same: 2 ft to 3 ft, moderate cross-onshore wind and lumpy. Friday bumps up marginally to 3 ft to 3 ft but still cross-on or onshore, and the period’s short — only 6 to 7 seconds — so no grunt there.
Saturday 18 July shows a brief uptick in combined energy to 134 on the morning (still just 3 ft from the W) but cross-on wind spoils it. Sunday 19 July afternoon finally gives us a moment: 4 ft from the WNW (7 seconds, 205 energy), and glassy conditions with a light NNW breeze. That’s surfable, but ordinary. A score of 1 out of 10 says it all. The break is inconsistent and rarely breaks, so don’t get your hopes up.
After that, we drop back into tiny territory from Monday 20 July right through to Saturday 25 July. Offshore winds on Monday the 20th and Tuesday the 21st keep things clean, but the swell’s down to 1 ft to 2 ft — barely a ripple. Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning offer glassy or clean conditions, but the swell height doesn’t budge. Thursday the 23rd has a little more energy at 56 combined from a 2 ft W swell, but cross-off and cross-on winds chop it up. Friday and Saturday the 24th and 25th are a write-off under fresh winds and lumpy seas.
Now, Sunday 26 July is where it gets interesting, though it’s still a mixed bag. Morning brings a 6 ft SW swell (405 energy) with a light cross-shore breeze and some crossing ripples — marginal at best, but at least there’s size. The period’s only 7 seconds though, so it’s windswell, not groundswell. Afternoon gets messy fast: 7 ft SW (558 energy) but a fresh 35 km/h onshore wind from the WSW. That’s too big and blown out for anything but a lash.
Monday 27 July is the standout. Morning session looks quality: 7 ft WSW swell (848 combined energy), 9-second period, and clean offshore wind from the ENE at 5 km/h. That’s real deal territory — solid swell, clean face, and the energy is strong. This is a break for experienced surfers only — over 8 ft would be expert-only, but at 7 ft it’s still in the advanced wheelhouse. Just remember Kaolins is a reef break with inconsistent waves, but when it lines up like this, it’s worth a look. Water temperature is about average for this time of year, nothing unusual.
Tuesday 28 July morning still has some life: 5 ft WSW (452 energy), 7 seconds, and light offshore ENE wind. Clean again, but that period is short — won’t have the same push or shape as Monday. For a beach break this short period can be a bit fat, but at a reef like Kaolins it might still offer a few.
Overall: one true standout on Monday 27 July morning — clean, solid, and powerful. Sunday 26 July morning and Tuesday 28 July morning are secondary glimmers, but nothing else in the window is worth chasing. The rest of the time you’re better off doing something else.
Rusty.
