Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for Kaolins over the next couple of weeks. Gotta be straight with ya – this is a tough run. We’re looking at a real dry spell for most of the outlook, so don’t get your hopes up too high.
Kaolins is a reef break, so when it’s on, it can be a gem, but it’s also inconsistent. The water’s sitting at 64°F, which is pretty much what you’d expect for this time of year. The real story here is the lack of any real quality. We kick off Saturday morning, July 4th, with a tiny 3ft swell from the WSW. The energy is weak at 133, and while the wind is glassy – a major positive – it’s just not enough to get the heart racing. It’s surfable, but very ordinary. That glassy window doesn’t last. By the afternoon, the wind swings cross-on and it’s game over for cleanliness.
From Sunday the 5th right through until Friday the 10th of July, it’s a grim scene. Swell drops to the 1ft to 2ft range, combined energy is pitiful, often below 100. The mornings offer some clean windows, especially on the 5th (Sunday) with a light offshore from the ENE, but the swell is just too small to bother. The afternoons are all cross-on and choppy. A total write-off.
Saturday the 11th of July is the only flicker of hope in this whole stretch. We get a bump in size to 4ft from the W, and the combined energy jumps to 193 – moderate, at least. The morning has light cross-off wind from the NNW, which will keep it clean. The period is a short 6 seconds, though, so it’ll be a bit weak and fat on that reef. Not a standout, but it’s the best you’ll see. The afternoon gets shredded by a strong 19 mph cross-on wind.
Sunday the 12th sees the biggest swell of the forecast at 5ft from the WSW, with energy hitting 337, but the wind is cross-on and messy. Won’t be pretty.
Honestly, after that Saturday morning, it’s all downhill. Monday the 13th has some small, clean waves in the 3ft to 4ft range with light cross-off winds, and the energy is over 100, but the quality is just “very ordinary.” From Tuesday the 14th onwards, it’s back to tiny, weak waves and poor conditions. The middle of the month, through the 15th to the 19th of July, is a complete blank. Swell drops to 1.0ft, energy is in the single digits, and the wind is either onshore or cross-on. It’s basically a flat spell.
So, what’s the move? If you’re desperate for a paddle, the Saturday morning of July 11th at Kaolins is your shot. It’s the only window with a bit of size, clean wind, and the water will be glassy. But keep your expectations on the floor. This is a proper drought. It won't stay poor forever, but for now, it’s time to wax the longboard and wait.
