The Lowdown
Alright, surfers, Rusty here. Let's talk about the local outlook.
Right off the bat, we're looking at a long, dry spell. The finder is calling for Kailua Beach, but the conditions are just not working for us. The predominant swell is coming from the ENE, but the wind is stuck in a cross-onshore groove, making everything choppy and messy. The first recommendation doesn't come until the 21st of July, and even then, it's a tough sell.
Let's be honest, the first week and a half is a write-off. The combined energy is weak, around 131 to 300, and the swell is a short, choppy 4ft to 6ft. The wind is a constant cross-onshore breeze, ruining any chance of a clean face. The water temp is a pleasant 79°F, which is about average for the time of year, but you won't be enjoying it.
We get a tease on the 21st of July. A long-period 16-second groundswell rolls in from the east, with a 2ft face. The energy jumps to 262, and the wind is straight onshore, which is at least clean for the takeoff, but the size is tiny. It's a poor surf conditions call, so don't get your hopes up.
The real action, but not for the faint of heart, kicks off on the 27th of July. That's when the heavy stuff arrives. The combined energy rockets into the thousands, hitting 3813 on the 27th morning, and blowing up to 5992 on the 28th. We're talking 10ft to 13ft of solid ENE groundswell with a period of 13 to 15 seconds. This is expert-only territory. The wind is onshore, which means the face will be bumpy, but the raw power is undeniable. The 28th afternoon gets a marginal rating, but with 13ft faces and a 12-second period, it's a heavy, dangerous beast. This is not a spot for anyone but the most experienced.
The 29th of July sees a sudden drop back to a 5ft N swell, but the wind finally lightens up to a light breeze. The energy drops to 496, which is weak, but it’s a glimmer of hope for a clean session after the storm.
The standout here is the 28th of July afternoon. The swell is a massive 13ft from the NE, with a 12-second period. The wind is a moderate breeze from the NE, which is onshore. The energy is a staggering 4420. It's a brute. For a point break, that long-period groundswell will set up nicely, but it will be a challenge. The crowds will be likely there, but only the hardcore will be out.
Honestly, the best advice for the next two weeks is to wait. The 27th through 29th of July is the window, but it's for the big wave chargers. The rest of the time is a fight against the wind. For the average surfer, this is a skip. The setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing for most of the period.
