Table - best surf conditions forecast for Kailua Beach over the next 16 days.
Alright, I’m lookin’ at this 16-day stretch and I gotta be straight with you – right now, Kailua Beach is just not cooperating. The wind is hammerin’ it from the ENE almost non-stop, and that swell is mostly short-period stuff that just can’t get its act together. It’s a frustrating pattern.
The water’s sittin’ at 79°, which is bang-on average for this time of year, so no surprises there, but that’s about the only thing that’s normal. The wave energy is moderate at best – we’re seein’ values mostly between 200 and 600 (combined energy of all swells directed here), which means there’s push but no shape. The wind is blowin’ a fresh breeze, 15 to 22 mph, and it’s either straight onshore or cross-onshore, just choppin’ everything up.
Jumpin’ into the days: Tuesday the 7th through to the end of the first week, it’s the same grim picture. Swell hangs around 7 ft to 8 ft from the ENE, period’s short at 7 to 8 seconds. That’s just windswell, and with that wind, it’s messy. Thursday the 10th and Friday the 11th are no better – still onshore wind, still lumpy. By Sunday the 12th and Monday the 13th, it’s still fresh and cross-onshore, and the surf is just poor.
Mid-week, Wednesday the 15th and Thursday the 16th, the swell drops a little – down to 5 ft to 6 ft – but the wind is still pumpin’ from the ENE at 18 mph, so it’s not clean. The wave energy dips into the low 200s, which is weak.
Now, around Saturday the 18th, we get a little flicker of hope. The period jumps to 10 and even 11 seconds on Sunday the 19th (combined energy of all swells directed here: 660 and 922). That’s a longer-period groundswell, which usually means better-shaped waves, but it’s still comin’ from the E-ENE and the wind is still onshore at 18 mph, so while the energy is there, the surface is gonna stay chopped. Swell heights hit 8 ft on Sunday the 19th – that’s gettin’ into expert-only territory for most, especially at a beach/point setup with that wind. The direction is comin’ from the east, which matches the optimum for Kailua Beach (NE), but without the wind switchin’ off, it’s just not gonna be good.
Monday the 20th holds 8 ft to 8 ft, and then Tuesday the 21st to Wednesday the 22nd the swell eases back to 6 ft to 7 ft, but it’s still the same story – wind onshore, short-period chop.
Honestly, there’s not a single standout session in this whole 16-day window. Every row says “poor surf conditions.” The wind just won’t give us a break, and the swell direction is locked in onshore. If I had to pick the least-bad moment, it’d be Sunday the 19th with that bigger, longer-period energy – but it’s a gamble for experts only, and it won’t be pretty.
For now, leave the surfboard at home and maybe check the kite gear if you’re into that, ‘cause the setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
