The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what Kailua Beach has in store for us over the next couple of weeks. I gotta be straight with you – it’s a rough stretch for paddle surfing. The whole 16-day window is a blank run with no good options. That’s a long gap from Wednesday July 15th all the way through Thursday July 30th. The swell energy (combined energy of all swells directed here) starts weak around 134 and builds into the high hundreds and even 800-plus by July 26th and 27th, but that doesn’t matter for us. The problem is the wind.
For the first week, it’s mostly cross-onshore or onshore from the E and ENE, blowing 9 to 16 mph, making things choppy and messy. The swell is short-period, usually 6 to 8 seconds – that’s windswell junk. Heights hover around 3 to 5 ft, but with that wind, it’s just a washing machine. Even on Friday July 17th when the wind goes onshore, the surf stays poor. The water temp is 79°, which is dead normal for this time of year, so no surprises there.
Into the second week, the swell period starts to stretch out – we see 11, 14, even 16 seconds on Sunday July 26th and Monday July 27th. The energy jumps way up (714 and 819), but it’s still accompanied by those moderate cross-onshore to onshore winds from the ENE at 12 to 16 mph. That long-period groundswell would be better at a point break or reef, but here at Kailua Beach, it’s just gonna break straight and stay messy. The best we get is onshore wind states, and the wave comment stays “poor surf conditions” right through.
For a spot like this that’s fairly consistent, it’s unusual to see such a long dry spell. But with no offshore winds, no clean conditions, and all that chop, there’s just nothing to recommend. If the wind ever shifts light offshore, things could change quick – but until then, I’d leave the board at home. This setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing, given the consistent breeze and building swell energy.
Stay tuned – forecasts can shift. Rusty out.
