The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty. Let's have a look at what the next couple of weeks have in store for us around Kailua Beach.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – the next week and a half is pretty grim for a proper paddle surf. For days on end, from Saturday the 18th right through to Wednesday the 29th of July, we’re looking at a constant, strong onshore or cross-onshore breeze from the ENE, blowing at 12 to 22 mph. That’s just going to tear the surface to pieces. The swell is there, but it’s messy, short-period stuff – mostly 4ft to 7ft, but with a period of just 7 to 8 seconds, so it’s all weak, choppy, and lumpy. The combined energy is moderate, hitting between 191 and 638, but it’s all for nothing with that wind. This is a stretch where you’d be better off on a kite than a paddle board, honestly. There’s a solid 11-day gap of no recommendations here.
Now, we do get a little glimmer of hope late in the period. The real standout, and the only one worth circling on your calendar, is the morning of Thursday, July 30th. That morning, the wind finally eases off, dropping to a light 6 mph cross-onshore breeze from the NNE. That’ll just be a light ruffle on the surface, so the waves will be clean. The swell size jumps to a solid 16ft from the East, but here’s the catch – that’s generated by a very long period groundswell of 11 seconds. The combined energy rockets up to 6259, which is very strong indeed. That’s a lot of water moving. For a point break like Kailua Beach, which is exposed to the NE, that long period can actually make it wall up and break with a lot of power. That’s expert territory at 16ft, so it’s not for the faint of heart. The water temp is a warm 80°, which is bang on average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
The next day, Friday the 31st, is still okay in the morning with 8ft from the ENE, but the period drops back to 8 seconds and the wind picks up to a gentle 9 mph cross-onshore, making it a bit choppy. It’s a consolation prize after the big day.
So, to wrap it up: the first week and a half is a write-off. The single best moment is the morning of Thursday, July 30th, when the stars briefly align for some big, powerful, clean surf at Kailua Beach. After that, it fades back into mediocrity. Keep your eyes on that Thursday morning window.
Rusty.
