Table - best surf conditions forecast for Kailua Beach over the next 16 days.
Alright, Rusty here. Let's get into it, yeah? Look, I'm gonna be straight with you. This 16-day stretch for Kailua Beach is a bit of a rough one. We've got a constant supply of swell, but the wind is just not playing ball. It's a classic case of "there's waves, but where's the fun?"
The water is sitting at a warm 79°, which is pretty much spot on for this time of year, so at least you won't be freezing while you're getting battered by the wind.
We start off Wednesday the 8th and it's a no-go. The swell is a messy 7 ft from the ENE, with a short, weak period of 7 seconds. The real killer is that fresh 22 mph cross-onshore wind. It's turning the ocean into a lumpy, choppy mess. The combined energy is moderate at 482, but it's just ugly. This trend of poor surf conditions carries right through the weekend and into the next week. Every day from the 8th to the 20th of July is the same story: swell heights between 6 ft and 8 ft, almost always from the ENE, with a short period of 7 to 8 seconds, and a relentless onshore or cross-onshore wind. The wind is usually a fresh breeze of 19-22 mph, making any session a battle against the chop. The combined energy fluctuates between 338 and 775, which is moderate to strong, but none of that energy is being shaped into anything rideable. It's just a wall of whitewash.
Then, around the 21st of July, something changes. The wind drops to a more manageable 12 mph onshore, but the swell gets weird. On Tuesday the 21st, we get a 3 ft to 4 ft swell from the east with a very long period of 16-17 seconds. That's a groundswell, and it's packing a lot of punch for its size, with a combined energy of 877 – that's strong. But here's the thing: long period swell like this can be a bit too straight for a beach break like Kailua, and it's still onshore wind. Wednesday the 22nd is similar, with a 3 ft, 15-second period swell, but the wind is cross-onshore. The energy drops to 537, still moderate. The surf is still poor, but the potential is there if the wind ever decided to cooperate. It just doesn't.
Honestly, looking at the whole 16 days, there isn't a single standout. Every single time slot is rated as poor surf conditions. The wind is consistently wrong, and the swell quality is low. This is a tough one. For a point break like Kailua Beach, which needs that clean offshore wind from the SW, we're getting the exact opposite. It's a blank run. For anyone looking to paddle out, I'd say save your energy. With the significant swell and strong, poor-quality wind, this setup might actually look more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. It's going to be a rough couple of weeks for the surfers.
Rusty, signing off.
