Table - best surf conditions forecast for Kailua Beach over the next 16 days.
Alright, let's get into it, folks. Rusty here.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you: for the next couple of weeks, Kailua Beach on the Big Island is looking like a write-off if you're chasing a proper surf. The whole 16-day forecast is a real tough watch, with nothing that I'd call a decent session. The first real chance of a wave doesn't show up until Friday the 10th, but even then, it's not good.
We're looking at a consistent ENE wind pattern that's just gonna wreck the surface. From Friday the 10th, right through the following week, it's mostly onshore or cross-onshore, blowing at 15 to 22 mph. That's fresh breeze territory, and it's going to make things choppy and lumpy, especially from Sunday the 12th onwards when the rain showers show up. The swell sticks around, with heights from 4ft to 7ft, and the combined wave energy is moderate, sitting between 180 and 596. But honestly, with that wind and short period swell of just 6 to 8 seconds, it's all messy, close-out junk.
The water temp is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
If you're a beginner, be careful. From the 10th to the 13th, the swell pushes over 6ft, and it hits 7ft on the 11th and 12th. That’s getting too chunky for learning. For the crew who can handle it, the setup just isn't there. The period is short, the wind is on it – it’s a frustrating pattern.
There’s a slight dip in swell around the 22nd of July, dropping to 3ft, but the wind stays strong. Then it bumps back up slightly around the 24th, but the cross-shore wind is still ruining any chance of a clean wave. There's no standout day, no sneaky window of glassy conditions. It's just a solid two-week stretch of poor surf.
Given the consistent onshore wind and the beach/point setup, honestly, this looks like it might be more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer for the majority of the period. For us, it’s a time to maybe work on the board dings and wait for the forecast to change. It’s a rough run, but it tends not to stay this poor for long – forecasts can flip.
Rusty.
