Alright, I’ve gone through what’s coming up for Kailua Beach, and I’ll be honest—it’s pretty grim. The trade winds are just hammering the coast, and for a spot that needs clean NE swell, we’re getting nothing but lumps.
From Monday the 6th of July, it’s on. Hard ENE trades at 22 mph, shoving into a 7ft swell. The energy’s there—moderate, at 472—but with that wind blowing onshore, it’s just a mess. Choppy, lumpy, poor conditions. That pattern sticks. Tuesday the 7th, Wednesday the 8th, it’s all the same: onshore or cross-onshore winds, short period swell around 7 or 8 seconds, and the wave comment is always “poor.” The swell hangs around 7ft to 8ft, too much push for the wind to allow anything to form up.
Through the first week and into the second, nothing changes. Thursday the 9th, Friday the 10th, all the way through to Saturday the 11th and Sunday the 12th—same ENE winds, same lumpy, onshore slop. The wave energy picks up a bit here and there, hitting 611 on Tuesday the 7th, but with a 8ft swell and short period, it won’t break with any shape. The water temp is about 79°, pretty normal for this time of year, so at least you don’t need a wetsuit.
After the first week, the swell intensity drops a little, but the wind doesn’t let up. Monday the 13th through Wednesday the 15th, we see it back down to 5ft to 6ft, but the wind is still a steady 16 mph from the ENE, and it’s either onshore or cross-onshore. The period drops to 7 seconds, making it even weaker. The energy falls into the low 200s, barely moderate. The “poor surf conditions” label stays stamped on every session.
By the last week—around Thursday the 16th through Tuesday the 21st—the swell dips even lower, around 3ft to 5ft, and the period is down to 6 seconds. The wind is still a problem. There’s a flicker on Saturday the 18th afternoon where the swell period jumps to 9 seconds and the energy hits 656, a sign of better quality, but the wind is 19 mph onshore, so it’s just a blown-out mess. The last few days, Sunday the 19th through Tuesday the 21st, are tiny and choppy.
There’s no standout here. Not a single window of clean waves. The whole 16-day forecast is a blank run. For a spot like Kailua Beach that’s usually fairly consistent, this is an unusual stretch of dud conditions. If you’re a kite surfer, this steady 12-22 mph cross-onshore wind and decent swell might work, but for a paddle surfer? Leave the boards at home. Forecasts can change, but this run is as poor as I’ve seen it.
