G’day, Rusty here. I’ve sifted through what’s coming up for Kailua Beach over the next couple weeks, and I gotta say—it’s a tough stretch. The whole 16-day window is a complete bust, with not a single session worth wetting a wetsuit for. No standout days, no hidden gems, just a flat-out “poor surf conditions” on every single report. That’s a rough one.
So, what’s going on? Kailua Beach is a point break, pretty consistent and open to the NE, which is the sweet spot direction for it. But from Sunday morning, July 5th, right through to Monday afternoon, July 20th, it’s a total dud. The swell hangs between 6 ft and 8 ft—size is actually there, but the wind is the spoiler. An endless ENE breeze blowing 12 to 22 mph, mostly onshore or cross-onshore, keeps things messy, lumpy, and choppy. The wave period is short—7 to 8 seconds—so it’s weak, wind-blown junk, not real groundswell. The combined energy numbers sit in the moderate range (241 to 592), but it’s all noise with zero quality.
Water temp at the start is about 80°F, which is pretty average for this time of year—nothing unusual there, just warm tropical water you won’t want to fight that wind for.
Honestly, for paddle surfing, this stretch is a full skip. With that steady wind and the swell size, this setup looks way more interesting for kite surfing than anything with a paddle. The silver lining? This break is usually fairly consistent, so a blank run like this isn’t the norm—forecasts can shift—but right now, there’s nothing to chase. Best to leave the stick at home and wait for a better day.
Rusty.
