The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you. The outlook for Kailua Beach over the next couple of weeks looks pretty grim. We’ve got a long stretch of poor surf on the cards.
Right off the bat, from Tuesday the 14th of July right through to the end of the month, the models are just showing messy, weak, and choppy conditions. For the first week, from July 14th to about the 20th, we’ve got a mix of onshore and cross-onshore winds from the east-northeast, all blowing between 9 mph and 19 mph. This is ruining any chance of clean waves. The swell is small, around 3 ft to 6 ft, with a short, weak period of 6 to 8 seconds, so the energy is low—hanging around 151 to 447 on the energy scale. It’s just blown-out mush.
For the second week, starting around July 21st, the wind stays onshore but the swell drops even more. By July 24th and 25th, we see some long-period groundswell sneaking in from the east with a period of 15 to 17 seconds, but the height is tiny—only 3 ft to 3 ft. The combined energy climbs into the moderate-to-strong range (511 to 625), but with those long, drawn-out lines and a steady onshore breeze, it’s not going to stack up into anything ridable at this beach break. That kind of long-period swell needs a point or reef to wrap around, not a straight-on sandbar. Plus, the water temp is about average for this time of year, nothing wild.
So what are we left with? Honestly, nothing worth paddling out for. This spot doesn’t offer a standout day. The setup is looking more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing, given the consistent wind and messy swell.
Hold tight. Forecasts can change, but right now, we’re in a blank run. Expect no real surf until maybe the very end of the month, and even that July 29th reading of 6 ft with short period and onshore wind doesn’t inspire confidence.
Rusty.
