The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty, and I’m calling it like I see it for Kailua Beach. This forecast is a real heartbreaker for anyone looking to paddle out. That exposed east side and those trade winds have the place locked up. There is no standout session here.
Overall Picture: We’re stuck in a long stretch of poor surf and nasty quality. The combined energy is moderate to strong at times, but it’s always fighting the wind. Water temp is a pleasant 81°, right about normal for this time of year.
Let’s Walk Through It: Right now, Sunday the 16th, we’ve got a thunderstorm risk and a 25 mph ESE cross-onshore wind, blowing a 13ft east swell to bits. The combined energy is 2418 (very strong). Complete mess. That afternoon drops to 8ft, but still cross-shore and choppy. Monday the 17th and Tuesday the 18th are the same sad tune: chest-high waves, moderate onshore winds. Don’t bother.
From Wednesday the 19th through the next week, the swell falls off a cliff. We’re down to 2ft to 4ft with light to gentle breezes – but still onshore or cross-onshore. The waves have no push, and there’s no shape. It’s a flat spell for practical purposes.
The Dead Zone: Honestly, there is nothing worth surfing from now until about Thursday, August 27th. That’s a solid 10-day gap with no recommendations at all.
The Only Blip of Size: On Thursday, August 27th, we see a 10ft east-northeast swell with a 10-second period (better energy) and a combined energy of 1672. Strong. But the trade wind is screaming at 18 mph, onshore. That’s big enough for experts only (over 8ft), but it’s going to be a bumpy, onshore mess. The point break might handle it a little, but not with that wind. Friday the 28th is even worse: an 12ft east swell with a combined energy of 2199, and 18 mph cross-onshore wind. That’s a kite-surfing playground, not a surf spot. The rest of the month is more of the same: fresh breeze and lumpy conditions.
Bottom line: There are no good surf options in this entire 16-day span. The water is warm, and the swell tries to show up, but the trade wind ruins everything. It’s a bummer, but a blank run like this is normal for Kailua when these winds lock in. Forecasts can turn, but for now? I’d find something else to do.
Rusty.
