The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty comin’ at you from the beach.
Honestly, I gotta level with you straight up. Lookin’ at the next sixteen days for Kailua Beach, there isn’t a single session I’d recommend paddlin’ out for. The finder is givin’ me zero good options, and when I dig into the numbers, it makes sense. Kailua’s a point break that’s exposed to the swell, and while the water temp is a balmy 81°, which is pretty average for this time of year, that’s about the only nice thing I can say.
The whole pattern is a long, drawn-out stretch of poor surf conditions. It starts off with a risk of thunderstorms on Monday the 17th, with a messy 6ft cross-onshore ENE swell at a short 8 seconds. That’s weak energy (347) and it just looks lumpy. That vibe pretty much sticks with us. Tuesday the 18th through Thursday the 20th, we’re stuck with small, 2ft to 5ft swell, mostly cross-on or onshore winds, and periods under 8 seconds. The wave energy is laughable, dropping from 182 all the way down to 96. It’s just not worth your time.
We get a little bump in size heading into the second week, but the wind stays a problem. From around Monday the 24th of August through to the end of the month, the swell pushes up, hitting 10ft and even 12ft by the 27th, with strong to very strong energy (hitting 1719). But the direction is all wrong—stiff ENE winds, onshore or cross-onshore, and the period is still short, mostly 7 to 9 seconds. That much swell with that wind just makes for a nasty, blown-out mess. For a point break like Kailua, that’s more of a kite-surfing scenario than a paddle-surfing one.
Even as we roll into September 1st, it’s the same story: 7ft swell, but with 25 mph onshore winds. The water temp anomaly is only +0.5°, so nothing weird there, just standard warm water.
There are no standouts. No hidden gems. It’s a blank run, and for Kailua, which can be fairly consistent, this stretch of poor conditions is a real bummer. Sometimes the forecasts change, but right now, I’d save the wax for another day.
