The Lowdown
Alright surfers, Rusty here. Gotta say, lookin' at the next two weeks for Kailua Beach, it's a bit of a mixed bag. We’ve got a long stretch of poor conditions to get through before the ocean finally wakes up.
First up, from Wednesday the 19th right through the end of the month, we're stuck in a pretty grim pattern. That wind is relentless, mostly out of the ENE, and it's blowing onshore or cross-onshore, just chopping everything up. The swell is tiny to moderate, nothing special, but the wind is the real killer. The water temp is sittin' at 80°, which is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there. Honestly, for the first ten days or so, you're better off takin' a nap. The combined wave energy is weak to moderate (188 to 573), but it's all messy and blown out. There's a gap here of nearly two weeks with no real surf on offer.
Now, we finally get a glimmer of hope. Come Wednesday morning, September 2nd, things start to shift. The swell picks up to 8 ft from the ENE, and the combined energy jumps to a strong 888. But the real story is the wind. By Wednesday afternoon, it turns super light and swings to a cross-offshore from the SSE. That’s clean, that’s glassy. The swell period is a modest 8 seconds, so it’s not a long-period groundswell, but the conditions are expected to be very good. This is the standout of the whole forecast, right here. The wave energy is strong (827), and Kailua Beach is a point break that can handle that direction. Be aware though, at 8 ft, that’s gettin’ into expert territory, and it’s “fairly consistent” here, so it’ll be worth the paddle. Crowds are possible, but it’s a Wednesday, so you might get lucky.
The energy drops off a bit into Thursday, September 3rd. The swell hangs around 7 ft, but the wind gets messy again, swinging cross and then cross-onshore, choppin' it up. The combined energy is still moderate (612), but the quality fades fast. The shine is off that apple by Thursday afternoon.
So, to wrap it up: suffer through the first week, maybe a little longer. Your one and only window is the afternoon of Wednesday, September 2nd. That’s the one to circle on the calendar. After that, it’s back to the waiting game.
Rusty.
