The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what’s on offer for Kailua Beach over the next couple of weeks.
To be straight with you, the entire 16-day window is a bit of a struggle. Every single time slot is marked as having poor surf conditions, so I can’t really point to a standout session. It’s a tough run.
We start off Tuesday afternoon, July 14th, with a weak, short-period swell from the NE at 4ft and a period of only 7 seconds. The wind is a gentle onshore breeze at 9 mph, but the water temp is a normal 79° for this time of year. The combined wave energy is low (219). It’s not looking good.
The whole first week stays in this same rut. Swell heights bounce between 3ft and 5ft, but the period is usually a short 6 to 8 seconds, meaning weak, messy waves. The wind is almost always a cross-onshore breeze from the E or ENE, ranging from 9 to 19 mph, keeping the surface choppy and lumpy. Thursday morning the 16th is a good example: 4ft from the E at 6 seconds, with a moderate cross-onshore wind at 12 mph. The energy is weak (143). Not something you’d paddle out for.
The second week doesn’t break the pattern. From Sunday the 19th through to the end of the month, every day is either a cross-onshore or onshore wind, with only a few morning slots showing onshore winds. The swell stays small to moderate, with heights up to 6ft on the 25th, but always with a short period of 6-7 seconds. The combined energy does climb into the moderate range, hitting 466 on the 25th and 571 on the 26th, but the poor surf quality rating sticks.
There’s a glimmer on Monday the 27th, where the swell period jumps to 14-15 seconds and the energy hits 685-741, but look at the size – only 3ft. That’s a long-period, small groundswell that would be better suited for a reef or point break, not a beach setup like this. The wind is onshore, but even then, the forecast still says “poor surf conditions.”
So, honestly, there are no good options here. The consistency is low, the wind is nearly always wrong, and the wave quality never breaks through. For a spot like Kailua Beach, a blank run like this is more normal than you’d hope. It tends not to stay poor for long, but for now, the forecasts can change. Keep an eye on it, but don’t hold your breath.
Rusty.
