Alright, let’s get into it. This is Rusty, and I’m looking at Kailua Beach for the next couple of weeks.
Right now, and for the foreseeable future, we’ve got a persistent trade wind pattern cranking out of the ENE, which is directly onshore or cross-onshore for this spot. That’s not what you want at a point break – it’s going to mess up the face of the wave and leave the surface choppy and lumpy. On top of that, the swell is almost entirely windswell, with short periods of 7 to 8 seconds, so we’re not getting any real push or shape. The combined swell energy is stuck in the moderate range, but it’s all wind-driven junk. There isn’t a single day in this whole 16-day run that scores well – every entry is flagged as “poor surf conditions.”
For a spot like Kailua Beach (Oahu), which is fairly consistent and exposed to the NE, you’d typically expect some rideable days, but this run is a total dud. The water temperature on July 2nd morning is around 79°, with a tiny anomaly, so it’s about average for the time of year – not that it helps with the surf.
We start on Thursday, July 2nd, morning – clear skies, but 16 mph onshore winds and a 5 ft ENE swell at 8 seconds. Choppy, poor. That same pattern holds through the weekend: Saturday morning, July 4th, 6 ft at 8 seconds, 19 mph onshore. For the Fourth of July, the only fireworks will be the wind blowing out the surface. Sunday, July 5th, gets a little bump in size – 6 ft – but the period drops to 7 seconds and winds pick up to 22 mph onshore. It’s just messy.
The second week doesn’t offer any relief. Monday, July 6th, through to the final day, Friday, July 17th, it’s the same story: ENE windswell between 5 ft and 7 ft, periods mostly 7 seconds, and winds never dropping below 12 mph. There’s one morning on Saturday, July 11th, where the swell drops to 5 ft from the NE, period of 8 seconds – still onshore wind at 19 mph. No improvement.
There are no standouts here. Nothing to get excited about. If you’re a kitesurfer, that 7 ft+ ENE swell with 19-22 mph winds might look interesting for a downwinder, but for a paddle surfer, this is a two-week blank. Honestly, for this spot, that’s not normal – it tends to have more going on, so this stretch is a real bummer. Hang in there, forecasts change, but for now, leave the board in the car.
Rusty.
