Table - best surf conditions forecast for Kailua Beach over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this is a grim run for Kailua Beach. The whole 16-day window is one long stretch of poor surf conditions. There’s nothing to get excited about, no standout sessions, and honestly, no real reason to paddle out.
We start off on Thursday, July 9th, with some lumpy, cross-on mess from the ENE. The swell is around 6.6 ft, but with a short period of 8 seconds and a fresh breeze up to 18.6 mph, it’s just choppy and blown out. That combined swell energy is only moderate at 477. The water temperature is 79°, which is about average for this time of year. This pattern just keeps rolling through the weekend. Friday and Saturday are the same story – onshore wind, 5.9 ft to 6.6 ft of short-period slop, and scores that are flat zeros. Sunday the 12th brings rain showers and a slightly bigger 7.5 ft of swell, but the wind is still cross-on and the energy jumps to 560, still moderate. It’s all rough and not worth your time.
The first week is a total write-off. Wind stays onshore or cross-onshore every day, with speeds between 12.4 mph and 21.7 mph. The swell is always from the ENE, short period (7-8 seconds), and the wave comment is always “poor surf conditions.” The combined energy never gets above 613, keeping everything in the moderate range. Even when the wind eases a bit on Tuesday the 15th, it’s still cross-onshore and choppy.
Then we hit a gap of several days where nothing changes. From July 16th through the 20th, it’s the same old story: cross-onshore winds, short-period swell, and “poor surf conditions.” The swell hangs around 6.2 ft to 3.3 ft, but the wind and short period ruin any chance of shape.
Now, right at the very end, on Tuesday, July 21st, we get a weird blip. The swell direction shifts to the east, and the period jumps to 20 seconds – that’s a very long period groundswell. The combined energy spikes to 1095, which is strong. But there’s a catch. The wind is still onshore from the ENE at 15.5 mph, and the wave comment is still “poor surf conditions.” The swell is only 3.3 ft, so that long period is going to make it fat and weak, and the onshore wind will chop it up. This is a classic case of a long-period swell that would be better at a point break or reef, not a beach setup like Kailua Beach. The next day, Wednesday the 22nd, is similar with a 3.9 ft swell from the east, 16-second period, and strong energy (821), but again, onshore wind ruins it.
The rest of the week into July 24th sees the swell drop to 2.3 ft and 4.9 ft, with periods getting shorter again. The wind stays onshore, and the rain showers return. It’s all poor.
So, the honest truth: there are zero good surf options in this 16-day window. Kailua Beach is a consistent spot, but this run is a total blank for quality waves. Forecasts can change, but right now, it’s a hard pass. Keep the board in the car and wait for a better day.
