Alright, let’s talk about Kailua Beach (Oʻahu). The next couple weeks? Honestly, it’s a tough stretch. The trade winds are locked in and blowin’ strong, and the swell is all short-period, wind-affected slop. We’re lookin’ at a long run of poor conditions right through till mid-month.
Startin’ on Saturday the 4th, we got a 1.7m ENE swell with a short 8-second period and a combined energy of 354. The problem is the wind is howlin’ from the ENE at 19 mph straight onshore. It’s gonna be blown-out and messy. No quality for the paddle crowd. Water temp’s about 79°, which is average for this time of year.
Sunday the 5th and into Monday the 6th, the wind actually picks up to 22 mph and the swell bumps to 2.0m, but it’s cross-onshore and lumpy (energy 437 and 454). Just poor conditions. Tuesday the 7th stays onshore and rough with 2–2.1m swell and energy hittin’ 539 on Monday afternoon, but with no clean wind, it’s a total mess.
From Wednesday the 8th through the end of the first week and deep into the second, it’s the same story: solid ENE trades at 16–22 mph, mostly onshore or cross-onshore, and swell heights stayin’ between 1.7m and 2.1m with periods of only 7–8 seconds. The combined energy is moderate (between 280 and 539), but the wind wrecks any chance of a rideable face. This setup is more suited to kite surfing than paddle surfing, especially with those steady winds.
There’s a drop in size around Saturday the 18th – swell down to 1.2m to 1.0m, period still 8 seconds, and energy fallin’ to 214–314. But the wind is still cross-onshore or onshore, so it’s still not worth paddlin’ out.
Bottom line: there’s no good surf options in this 16-day window. It’s a classic summer trade-wind grind for Kailua Beach. When there’s energy, the wind ruins it. When the wind eases a little, the swell disappears. A blank stretch like this ain’t unusual around here in July. Keep an eye out – forecasts can change.
