The Lowdown
Alright, surfers, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you about the next couple of weeks. Right now, the ocean’s just not playing ball for us at Kailua Beach. We've got a stretch of poor surf conditions stretching through the entire first week, and honestly, it’s a bit of a bummer. The winds are mostly onshore or cross-onshore, chopping everything up, and the swell is weak and short-period. It’s going to be a fight, not a glide.
The first real chance of something decent doesn't arrive until the first of September. Before that, it's a long grind of onshore winds. We're looking at a solid gap of about a week with zero surf on offer. Kailua Beach is usually more consistent than this, so a blank run like this stands out.
Now, for that one bright spot. On Tuesday, the 1st of September, things start to change in a big way. The swell builds through the day, and the energy in the water jumps dramatically, from moderate readings of around 257 to a strong 1391 by morning. That’s a massive difference. It’s a long-period swell too, with the period stretching to 11-13 seconds.
This is where Kailua Beach (Big Island) shines. This spot is a point break, and a long-period groundswell is exactly what it wants. It loves the direction from the E, which is also the optimum direction for it. However, the wind is a real letdown. It's still howling onshore or cross-onshore at 15-22 mph, which will keep things messy.
This promising pulse grows even stronger on the 2nd of September, with that combined energy hitting a huge 2489. The swell is going to push up to 8ft. That size is getting big, and with the onshore wind, it'll be a heavy, lumpy mess. We're in the realm where it's for experts only. For the rest of us, it might be more interesting to watch than to paddle out. The period is also over 15 seconds at times, which, while powerful, can make a point break like this a bit too straight. It might not be the perfect glassy day we all dream of, but it's the only real pulse in the window.
The energy is promised, but the conditions will likely keep it from being pristine. We’ll have to take what we can get. Don't expect perfection, but keep an eye on that first week of September. It's a long way out and forecasts change, but at least there's something to hope for.
Stay stoked,
Rusty
