The Lowdown
Alright folks, it’s Rusty here. Let’s cut to the chase: we’re looking at a pretty grim run ahead for Kailua Beach. This is a classic case of the tradewinds ruining the party. We’ve got a solid 16-day window, but honestly, there’s not a single day in there that’s worth paddling out for a proper session.
The pattern is locked in: persistent onshore and cross-onshore winds cranking out of the ENE and E, blowing between 9 mph and 19 mph for the vast majority of the period. That’s going to chop up any wave that tries to form. The swell is there, bouncing between 3 ft and 6 ft, but it’s all short-period, weak windswell (periods of 6 to 8 seconds) with a combined energy that mostly sits in the low-to-mid 200s. That’s weak, messy energy. The water temperature is sitting at 79°, which is pretty average for this time of year, so nothing weird there.
There’s a real gap in quality here. It’s not until Monday, July 27th, that we see a glimmer of something different. That morning brings a long-period groundswell of 15 seconds, but it’s from the east at only 3 ft. The wind finally goes light and offshore from the NE. It’s a tease, really. The energy is moderate (611), but the size is just too small to get excited about. The afternoon of the 27th is even worse. Then Tuesday, July 28th, shows a bigger pulse of 6 ft from the east with a 12-second period and a strong energy reading of 1221, but the wind is back onshore and cross-onshore, so it’s going to be a bumpy, blown-out mess. Also, that long-period swell at a beach break like Kailua will likely close out and be hard to read.
The best bet? Don’t bother. The whole stretch is a write-off. It’s a blank run. For a point break, we need clean conditions, and we’re just not getting them. With the persistent onshore winds and the short-period, weak swell, this setup honestly looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing through the first week.
Rusty.
