The Lowdown
Alright, let me have a look at what’s shaping up for Kailua Beach over this extended period. Straight up, I gotta be honest with you—this forecast is a real struggle. We’re looking at a solid two-week stretch where the conditions just aren’t coming together for a proper paddle. The trade winds are going to be a persistent pain, and the swell direction is mostly coming from the wrong angle for this point break.
Starting off this Sunday the 23rd of August and running right through the rest of the month, it’s pretty grim. Monday the 24th through to Monday the 31st, you’re looking at chest to head high swell, around the 4ft to 7ft mark, but it’s coming from the ENE and E. That’s a cross-on or onshore wind situation, with the wind blowing at a solid 16 to 19 mph. The swell period is short and weak, mostly 6 to 7 seconds, making for lumpy, choppy, and generally messy waves. The wave energy is bouncing around between 144 and 393 (moderate). Honestly, it’s not worth paddling out for a proper surf; the setup with the wind and the short-period swell makes it look way more interesting for the kite surfers than for us.
There is one tiny glimmer, but it’s a long way off. On Tuesday the 1st of September, things try to clean up. The wind backs off to a gentle breeze from the NNE at 9 mph and goes straight offshore. The swell jumps up a bit to 6ft to 7ft from the ENE, with a period of 9 seconds. The energy climbs into the strong range at 601 to 615. The call is only a “marginal” one, with a score that’s slightly better than the rest, so it’s not a full standout. The water temp is going to be feeling about normal for this time of year. It’s the only day where the wind might actually let you have a clean wave, but the swell direction still isn't the optimum NE that Kailua prefers.
After that, it’s back to the same old story. Wednesday the 2nd through Friday the 4th of September, the trades return with a vengeance at 12 to 22 mph, keeping it choppy and poor. By Sunday the 6th of September, we get a cross-off wind from the S and SSE, which cleans things up a bit, with 5ft to 6ft of ENE swell at 8 seconds. It’s another marginal day, but the energy is weaker at around 292 to 302 (moderate), and that short period won't give you much push. The final Monday the 7th is more of the same—poor conditions with cross-on winds.
So, what’s the call? If you’re desperate, keep an eye on Tuesday the 1st of September. It’s the only time in this whole 16-day window where you might find a clean, offshore wave, but the swell direction isn’t ideal. The rest of it is a write-off for surfing. Stick to the kites or just take a break.
