The Lowdown
Alright mate, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for Kailua Beach.
Honestly, the next week and a half is pretty grim. From Thursday the 20th of August right through to the end of the month, we’re looking at a real flat spell with poor surf conditions. The wind is mostly onshore or cross-onshore from the ENE, blowing anywhere from 6 to 22 mph, and the swell is weak, short-period stuff around 3 ft to 7 ft and only 6 to 7 seconds. The combined wave energy is low to moderate, topping out around 389 (moderate) on the 25th, but it’s all wind-affected and messy. Kailua Beach is a point break, but it’s exposed to the ENE and the optimum swell direction is from the NE, so the direction is off. The water temperature is 80° with a normal anomaly of 0.2°, so it’s about average for this time of year. Crowds are sometimes a thing here, but with conditions this poor, it won’t be an issue.
There’s a gap of a few days of nothing worthwhile, then things get a bit more interesting. By the 30th of August, the swell starts to build, and on Sunday the 30th of August, we see a jump to 7 ft from the ENE with a period of 13 seconds and a massive combined energy of 1468 (strong). The wind is still onshore from the NE at 19 mph, so it’s lumpy, but that’s a lot of energy. This builds into Monday the 31st of August with 8 ft swell from the ENE at 12 seconds and energy readings of 1900 and 1966 (very strong). Still onshore wind, so it’s not clean, but it’s big.
The standout window is the 1st of September. On Tuesday morning, we’ve got an 12 ft swell from the ENE at 10 seconds, with a combined energy of 2611 (very strong). The wind drops to a light 6 mph from the NE, making it offshore. That’s the best call in the whole outlook. The wave comment says “marginal” but with that size and offshore wind, the break might be holding. It’s big – over 8 ft – so this is for experts only. Tuesday afternoon sees the wind go near-calm at 3 mph from the NE, with the same 12 ft swell and energy of 1967. That’s a solid session if you’re experienced.
After that, it drops off quickly. Wednesday the 2nd of September has 8 ft from the ENE but cross-onshore wind, and then it’s back to poor conditions through to the 4th of September with 6 ft to 7 ft and onshore wind.
So, the only real standout is the 1st of September – big swell, light offshore wind, and a lot of energy. It’s a long-range call, so keep an eye on it, but it’s the only thing worth paddling out for.
Rusty.
