Alright, grab your coffee. I'm lookin' at the next few weeks for Kailua Beach, and honestly, it's a bit of a tough stretch. We’ve got surf on the table, but the wind is gonna be our main issue from the get-go. The trade winds are pumpin' and right onshore for most of the period, which is gonna leave things choppy and bumpy. The water temp is sittin' at a nice 79°, pretty normal for this time of year, so you won't need a thick suit, at least.
The first week is a write-off for quality. Starting Friday morning July 3rd, we've got some clouds and a raw 16 mph ENE wind blowin' straight onto the shore. Swell is around 5 ft from the ENE with a short period of 8 seconds, but the energy is weak at just 271. It's gonna be a mess. That same pattern sticks around through the weekend and into the next week. The swell actually picks up to around 7 ft by Monday afternoon, with moderate energy levels climbing up there around 539, but that ENE wind stays locked in at 19-22 mph. That’s just not what you want for that exposed point. It's all onshore, lumpy, and just plain ugly.
Come Wednesday July 8th, the wind backs off just a hair to 19 mph, but it goes cross-onshore, which doesn't save it. The wave comment just says "poor surf conditions" over and over. It’s a solid week of nothin’ worth paddling out for.
After the 10th of July, we see the swell start to fade. By Monday July 13th, the swell drops under 3 ft, and the energy falls to 109. The wind is still cross-onshore but lighter, a gentle breeze at 9 mph, which makes it "fairly choppy." Not great, not terrible, just small and weak. Tuesday the 14th is the absolute low point, with the swell barely reaching 2 ft and energy at just 83. That’s barely a ripple.
Then, just when you think it's over, we get a bit of a pulse around Wednesday July 15th. The swell jumps back to 6 ft from the E, but the period is on the short side at 6 seconds, and the wind is cross-onshore at 12 mph, making it choppy.
The one real standout? It has to be Thursday July 16th. The swell picks up nicely to 7 ft from the ENE with moderate energy at 474. The wind is onshore again, so it's not glassy, but it's a solid 7 ft day. Now, 7 ft is gettin' a bit big for beginners, but for intermediate and above, there will be some push. The problem is that wind. It's onshore at 12 mph, so it's gonna be a battle, but if you're hungry and can handle a bumpy surface, that Thursday afternoon might be your best shot.
After that, it settles back into the same old story: 6 ft swell with onshore trades through the 17th and 18th. It's not gonna be a good run for paddle surfing. If you see that onshore wind and the bumpy conditions, you might be better off rigging up a kite than paddling out for most of these days.
So, overall? A long dry spell of onshore winds. July 16th is the best of a rough bunch, but it's not special. Gotta wait for a change in the pattern.
